And even songs like The Best of Times would be awesome to see live too! Also will be interesting to see how Portnoy plays Mangini’s parts in the newer stuff
My favourite band and my favourite drummer, the perfect marriage is back, thanks to mike mangini for all your hard work and great playing, last album is in my top 3 of all DT albums.
Can we give props to the wives? If you saw the Petrucci tour with the ladies opening, you could see how they all were having a great time. Gotta think that was a huge part of this. 💜💜🎶🎶 STOKED for what is to come!
I was at the Petrucci show in NYC one year ago and yes, the vibes were good. But this was a BUSINESS decision. Touring is super competitive now especially since the pandemic ended and DT was not the draw for concert promoters in 2022 and 23 the way they had been prior to the pandemic and not even close to the concert draw they were from 2000- 2010 time frame when MP was still in the band. Once again, this was a BUSINESS decision.

@@bosstime2010 the conclusion you reach with the decision to bring MP back is supported by nothing but hard facts. The show at the Beacon in March of 2022 was more than half-empty. Yes, I'm sure John Petruccis wife knew this and told her husband to wake up and hire MP back to the band if he wants to make any $$$ with the band moving forward.
Mangini can play Portnoy's drum parts no problem. I doubt Portnoy can play Mangini's parts. Mangini is technically on another level. Portnoy has the character.
Only a matter of time! Really excited for what’s coming out next year from them. Salute to Mangini, who did an excellent job for 13 years. Wish him all the best I guess my only concern is whether Portnoy is going to keep with all his projects and manage to dedicate his time to tour with DT as before
Flying Colors is most likely not continuing since Steve Morse has problems with his hand and looks after his sick wife. Sons of Apollo is done acording to Bumblefoot who said it in a recent interview and Jeff Scott Soto posted it on his Social Media today (he was surprisingly surprised when he wrote that), Neal Morse kinda worked very close with Virgil Donati lately and Eric Gilette started his own band... I'm sure he will be just that again. And that makes me more than happy!
Plus, the new album is guaranteed to be heavier than anything they’ve done since Portnoy left. It’s like losing your right arm and then growing it back 13 years later.

I agree completely with Kyle. All the pieces were falling into place, with the last major one being reconciling with Labrie. Once that happened, it seemed inevitable.
💯 too little people pointing out that DT has been stale since many years before MP left - mostly in terms of uninspired melody and formulaic songwriting. I hope I’m wrong but I’d be surprised if that is totally revived.

Not playing any Mangini-era songs would be like sh*tting on new fans who got to know DT after 2010. And I think it is a big chunk of fanbase. The Grammy brought many new fans who had no clue who the Portnoy was.
It's a shame but I too think the band won't play much of Mangini era songs, a lot of D/T and A View From the Top of the World would be amazing! But in the end, we gotta celebrate Mike's homecoming.
Any thoughts on, cares, opinions on from a business standpoint how things will be? Like creatively it’s great, but he was the main driving force pre leaving, do you think he will resume more or less his same standing as before?

I was suprised, but also it seemed like something was in the works... Obviously it's also coming up on 40 years for the OG guys, so that's a factor. I've been one of the fans who has been quite critical of the recent albums (although Petrucci says that means I'm not a fan): Although recent albums have mostly been good, I never felt like they had the same life and spark that the old albums had. I think this is especially true when it seems like I can predict what is coming next in a new song, which is just something I could never say about most of the Portnoy-era tracks. That being said, I did also feel that the last couple of Portnoy-era albums were not amazing, and their live shows had become a little stagnant and (again) lacking the sense of freedom and creativity that seemed to pervade much of their earlier performances. Something I've really disliked about recent live performances is the reliance on the click track to keep everything in sync... it just changes the whole feel of things and makes it all a bit less raw and emotional. I always used to think Portnoy was a bit of a control freak egomaniac, but I've come to value his creative input perhaps more than any other current band member.
Hi guys, you seem forget that the alchemy between members changes after an absence of 13 years. And do not forget that James it’s not the same James back in 2010! I’ll be curious to know what will happened when MP will hear how James Labrie perform these days 😢
So I'm a be one of the weirdos that isn't necessarily super excited about this. I guess the main reason is because I prefer transatlantic and the Neil Morris band and some of the other things Mike has been doing to dream theater. I do love dream theater, but I think Mike Mangini has been perfectly fine. I haven't really Mike. I saw him in July in the winery dogs. My fear is now that Mr portnoy will be so consumed with this touring and recording schedule that a lot of the other projects he's involved in will fall along the wayside and that would make me sad
I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm a bigger Neal Morse then I am a Dream Theater fan I wouldn't be surprised if the guys in Dream Theater told Mike that he has to be all in with no side projects.
No doubt that's going happen, but I'm not a fan of Mangini Era DT, not necessarily because of Mangini, i think he's a great drummer, but the music they created with him seemed so sterile and paint by numbers for me. I can't even get part way into their latest album, had to just put it down, walk away and acknowledge that this Era of the band is just not for me, so this potentially saves the band for me in terms of future listenability.
In all honesty I kinda wish they would’ve kept this under wraps longer and did the press release with and already pending album release like two months away. Now it’s like… we’re all chomping at the bit to hear something and how much will that fade by the time they release something?
Yes! I think they actually lost the most when KM left. Give Kev a call and get Ray Alder on lead vocals!! They should’ve put a fork in LaBrie years ago.
@@Ziri0615Nah, Mangini is easily the more technical drummer. I wouldn't be surprised if MP has been practicing the parts tirelessly, though. This is no knock on Portnoy as I much prefer DT with him in it.

They’ll co-produce it. These two guys are non-biological brothers, FFS. I’m sure all this was ironed out before the announcement. Does anyone really think Portnoy would return and have any less status than he did before he quit? Come on now. That’d be like Lennon hiring McCartney as a sideman in the 70s. Not even in the realm of possibility. I submit that a big part of the reason they want MP back is for the non-drum-related skills he brings. They aren’t going to mess with the chemistry that made them the kings of prog metal.
@@ProjectVastness- I used to say that, too, but I stopped because I like Symphony X better than Dream Theater. I’ve heard Jim Matheos doesn’t want to write any new Fates Warning material, so Petrucci and Portnoy should give Ray Alder a call. Imagine how great that would be!!
They toured super hard for the 2000s album tour cycle every two years he wanted to take a five year break the other members did not want to do that . Also there was some tension between him and James
That'll be cool as long as he doesn't try to sing on the new album. Hoping that was what Labrie made him agree to in order to take him back. Portnoy's awful voice dragged Systematic Chaos and Dark Clouds down into the mud on several songs. Unfortunate but true.

I can't even get part way into their latest album, had to just put it down, walk away and acknowledge that this Era of the band is just not for me, so this potentially saves the band for me in terms of future listenability.
I cant stand Neil Morse band and the preachy lyrics...i hope he can figure out a way to keep Winery Dogs alive the the rest can f off.
@@andrewsullivan3180- I’m with you 100%, Andrew!🤘🏼
In all honesty I kinda wish they would’ve kept this under wraps longer and did the press release with and already pending album release like two months away. Now it’s like… we’re all chomping at the bit to hear something and how much will that fade by the time they release something?
That Uber ride must have been very expensive
Kevin Moore next!
Yes! I think they actually lost the most when KM left. Give Kev a call and get Ray Alder on lead vocals!! They should’ve put a fork in LaBrie years ago.

Dig the move. Not sure MP can accurately pull off the MM drum work but he brings more than that. Pumped for new DT!!!!
Mike Portnoy can play Mangini's drum work with one hand
@@Ziri0615Nah, Mangini is easily the more technical drummer. I wouldn't be surprised if MP has been practicing the parts tirelessly, though. This is no knock on Portnoy as I much prefer DT with him in it.
@@segfault_000 Mike Mangini is a drum machine + dont care about technique, this is total masturbation
@@segfault_000 Mike Portnoy and practice in the same sentence, you hear yourself talking damn, the day Mangini writes a song as technical as Dance of eternity come back and talk to me about technique
I'm more than okay if dream theater doesn't play any MM Era songs going forward, just a personal opinion.
wayyyy bigger than Porcu Tree or anything else mentioned or anything else
Well another thing is that Mike Portnoy is a composer as well, and mangini no
I feel sorry for LaBrie , now he "has" to sing those old songs again.. I'll guess they have to tune down 1, 5 step now..
Rafa Barbosa looks like Andrew Tate.
Learning to live will be a top starting show...and on the end a big medley
Would think Petrucci will be the sole producer of this new album, in spite of Portnoy's presence, correct?
No at least portnoy will mix the drums. Clearly he did on jp solo album. His sound 100 percent
I don't think so, Portnoy will return to Producer chair.
@@crusheverything4449 I guess we'll see. I just hope the other four guys tell MP "PLEASE NO DEATH METAL VOCALS!"
You should be a fool to say that Mangini is OK with this. He lost his job man!!!
I'm sure he's got a big compensation package in order to step down.
SFAM Pt 3! im ready!!!!
Now if they will just replace LaBrie with someone that can sing live and my wish-list will be complete.
That'll never happen.
Yup.
Russel Allen from symphony X would be great xD
@@ProjectVastness- I used to say that, too, but I stopped because I like Symphony X better than Dream Theater. I’ve heard Jim Matheos doesn’t want to write any new Fates Warning material, so Petrucci and Portnoy should give Ray Alder a call. Imagine how great that would be!!
i"m sorry i misspell i mean mangini
What was Portnoy's Complaint? Why did Portnoy leave Dream Theater any ways?
They toured super hard for the 2000s album tour cycle every two years he wanted to take a five year break the other members did not want to do that . Also there was some tension between him and James
Stop with the Metropolis part 3 move on pls
...and will Portnoy play live the last 10 years tracks ?
He will
I hope they get rid of the live click tracks and bring a little looseness back to the band
Awesome if they get a new singer 🎉 James was untouchable in during images and awake but now he’s terrible
That would be even bigger/better news 😂 but never going to happen
Labrie should have left in 2010 and not Paotnoy
hopefully this means he'll leave NMB to make room for someone like Nick D'Virgilio. they've reached an impasse and Mike leaving would be great
That'll be cool as long as he doesn't try to sing on the new album. Hoping that was what Labrie made him agree to in order to take him back. Portnoy's awful voice dragged Systematic Chaos and Dark Clouds down into the mud on several songs. Unfortunate but true.
hey, guy you missing the big pictured the problem is not managing !!what they gonna do with james voice ?? managing is a class guy but he is not the issue here c"mon guy talk about it you guy have a voice i don't and please first and foremost i'm big fan os d.t. and keep up the good work
DT is stale. Last tour they were not good. John's solo tour was really good. The dream is over, wake up.
Im not happy, I prefer Mangini in the Band.
Mangini is way better than Portnoy and Mangini loves the band more than Portnoy. Portnoy decided to leave - he does not love DT
get a clue already ffs
Portnoy wanted to take a break, needed a break, the rest of the band was likeFU goodbye
get a clue
Mangini sucks! It's great to have Portnoy back!!!!
Nah, Mangini's fucking awesome. Still absolutely stoked about MP's return though🤘
Mangini sucks?!! You must’ve been born without ears. Bummer.
This is horrible news
