I'm convinced they'll play Octavarium, the whole "the story ends where it began" theme is too fitting
Edit: I was right and it was glorious!

This is what I think: by the time the tour begins, they'll have a new song out and they'll start the tour with that new song. Then, they'll play one song for each album, celebrating the 40-year anniversary, ending with Metropolis. For the Mangini era they'll do a medley.

    • @Heluctis
      @Heluctis 8 месяцев назад +7

      Damn that seems highly likely

    • @benjaminsheehan7483
      @benjaminsheehan7483 8 месяцев назад +3

Hey that's not a bad idea, I could see a medley including one song from each album from DT12 to View, followed by Breaking All Illusions in full. Could be a good way to honour that era of the band without taking away tooo much time from the classics.

So for those who wanted to see how many they got right, the setlist was as follows:
    Act I
    Metropolis
    Overture 1928
    Strange Deja Vu
    The Mirror/Lie Outro solo
    Panic Attack
    Barstool Warrior
    Hollow Years
    Constant Motion
    As I Am
    Act II
    Night Terror (new song)
    This Is The Life
    Under A Glass Moon
    Vacant
    Stream Of Consciousness
    Octavarium
    Encore:
    Home
    Spirit Carries On
    Pull Me Under
They basically sandwiched the show with Images and Words, and Scenes.
So Dan was right about the intro being Metropolis

I like all your options but 3 hours for labrie will not be easy now. So I think there will be more instrumental songs. And there will be the Alien. I don't like it but they are playing it everytime...
Anyway, my DREAM list (in Paris possibly :D) would be:
    - The glass prison
    - 6:00
    - Solitary Shell (my fave of all times)
    - Gift of Music
    - Home/ Dance of Eternity/The spirits carry on
    - New Millennium
    - The count of Tuscany
    - Voices/Lie
    - Wither
    - Octavarium
    - A Change of Season
    - Pull me under

    No particular order:
    1) Pull me under
    2) The Glass Prison
    3) Panic Attack
    4) Dance of Eternity
    5) The Alien
    6) Breaking all Illusions
    7) Stream of Consciousness
    8) Forsaken
    9) Wither
    10) As I am
    11) Octavarium

I don't think they will play "The Alien" Portnoy has only just re-joined the band & that song is very technical from a drum point of view, also I do not think it sounds the greatest live.

I'd lvoe to see The Glass Prison as the opener. I like The Dark Eternal Night as a staple...it always gets the crowd going. Love to see Blind Faith or Misundertstood as a deep cuts. Breaking Illusions, The Enemy Inside, Illumination Theory, At Wit's End from the MM era. Pull Me Under or Metropolis Part 1 for the Encore. Whatever the choices are, this is going to be epic!!!

This is what I think /hope /wish the setlist will be if they are playing a 3-hour set, which is kinda unlikely. But we will see. Hope some of these songs make it to the final setlist. And if not we still get the chance of seeing one of the greatest bands with one of the greatest line-ups ever. Whatever they are going to play is gonna be an unforgetable experience.
    Set 1
    Metropolis Part 1
    A Fortune In Lies
    6:00
    A Change Of Seasons
    Peruvian Skies
    Dance Of Eternity
War Inside My Head/ The Test That Stumped Them All
    Honor Thy Father
    Panic Attack
    15 Minute Break

    Breaking All Illusions
    The Looking Glass
    The Gift Of Music
    Barstool Warrior
    Transending Time
    New Song
    Pull Me Under
*The tracking may be different but i think they will choose songs from all of their albums.

Great stuff guys, super fun and hard to do. I gave it some thought and this is what I came up with. I was originally trying to represent every album since it's an anniversary tour, but I couldn't fit them all in and gave up. I also think they could go chronological which is not represented here.
    SET 1:

    Ytse Jam
    Constant Motion
    Metropolis Pt 1

  • @irosansbox3844

    Here's a wild take. While I love the ideas you guys came up with and agree with a lot, i could see this;
Mike Mangini has been an amazing guy. He stepped in to take over impossible shoes. He did it better than anyone else could have. I really believe that. He never said one nasty thing, never complained, never shot back at angry or belligerent fans. He was a complete and total stud, even when he was forced to leave.
I could 100% see the band passing homage to him WAY MORE than 1 or 2 songs. I could see them playing the entire 1st set as homage and honor to what he did, as well as showing that Portnoy is up to the task and is accepting of playing those songs. Then the second set being all the encore songs to give the crowd what they really want, as well as welcoming Portnoy back, amping the room and making the show worth what people want. The encore then is the new song from the next album. If not the encore, the second to last song then one more that everyone knows and loves.
This idea kinda closes the last era and starts something completely new. That would be awesome. It would also facilitate getting people who won't listen to the mangini era to finally start listening to those songs. I know lots of people who just won't listen to them because they are not Portnoy. This idea is wild, but a possibility.

The setlist speculation game sure is fun, no doubt about it, but a vital question remains: how on earth will LaBrie keep up? More instrumental songs in the set and shorter sets over all, thus less strain? Remove sections of songs like they did in 2008/2009 with Take The Time (omitting the section starting with "the unbroken spirit, obscured and disquiet..." onwards) to support his voice? Tune down even FURTHER than a half-step, since a half-step never really worked in 2017?? I'm equal parts excited and curious to see how this tour pans out and what steps are taken to support LaBrie, because he's been getting worse by the year to the point where he simply cannot sing live. They're in their 60s now, give or take, so suitably sensible measures need to be taken to make this tour the best it can be. I'm praying.

Can't forget the new material that'll be out, that should have some place on the set list.
    From the Rolling Stones Interview:
"How will you know when the album is done?
Petrucci: There are different factors. A lot of times we’ll base it on how long we want this record to be.
Portnoy: Even though we have a very loose schedule, and we have control over that, we do have a tour in October. So you look at that and backtrack: If we’re starting the tour on October 20th, we need to be in rehearsals by the last week of September, which means that the album needs to be mixed and mastered, and delivered by X date. We need to have it tracked before we can mix it, so that kind of dictates it. Luckily, we’re not at the mercy of a studio that’s kicking us out or of a label that’s pulling the plug on the project. But scheduling a tour is something you need to be conscious of."

I’ve been a DT fan since the first album, WDADU. I saw the band live when they brought the late, great Charlie Dominici BACK into the fold to open for Marillion at The Ritz in NYC. I’m a half hour into the video and no one has addressed the elephant in the room: LaBrie’s voice. My thought is that they will pepper instrumentals THROUGHOUT the set, to give James some breaks. That, or have some extended instrumental intros to a lot of songs.
Another thing l haven’t heard discussed is if they’ll drop the keys for the bulk of the songs, or not. Personally, l love LaBrie, but he’s not thirty - or even forty - years old anymore. He’s in his early sixties and age affects us all, especially singers. The band also have to put a bunch of ballads, or mid paced tunes in the set for two reasons. Number one, pacing; number two, the instrumentalists aren’t in their twenties anymore! They just can’t do a two hour set without some tranquil moments. It’s definitely NOT going to be all bangers!
Finally! Kyle just mentioned some slower moments. Then he picked the Instrumedley? No way. My best guess is that a few instrumentals will be peppered throughout the set. That’s the logical way to preserve James’ voice for the show AND the tour.
    Interesting and intriguing show, lads.
Cheers 🍻 from The Big Apple. 🍎

I'm just interested to see how Portnoy plays the Mangini era songs. He's obviously one of my favorites drummers ever but there's no way he has the dexterity to play the Mangini parts exact, especially the super fast sixteenth note stuff with one hand.

I don't expect one song to be played that Portnoy wasn't on. Just like Ian Gillan doesn't sing Coverdale or Turner material. There is more than enough classic era material that will make most diehard fans happy. I also see them playing "Octavarium".

I bet they will invest on the chemistry between James and Mike...songs like Octavarium, Dark Eternal Night will probably be there. The first set will be based on hits, all the good stuff. I don't know, but Awake is making 30 years in 2024...maybe Awake played in full on the second set? Hard to believe but who knows it anyway? Or the second set could be 12 step suite + Encore (Octavarium? Best of times? ACOS????)

It is of course super exciting that Portnoy is back in the drum seat, but this is the 40th anniversary tour, and so I am very skeptical of the idea that they would only play 1 song from the Mangini era. I expect they would play at least 3. Perhaps the songs that they will alternate over nights will be Mangini era songs. That way, over the tour they could include a minimum of 1 song from every album, but not have to play a song from every Mangini era album every night. So Breaking All Illusions every night, and then alternating two from the other.4 albums each night?

I would go for Under A Glass Moon as an opener.....Also would be interesting to see if any songs from the Mangini era actually make the setlist - and hopefully there will be nothing from that disasterpiece The Astonishing.........I'd also ban any guitar / drum / keyboard / bass solo spots - just utterly ridiculous and completely outdated - the band members can show their musicianship within the songs rather than taking some self-indulgent solo spot

I asked chat gpt and I want this so bad now 🥹
"Creating a dream setlist for Dream Theater's 40th-anniversary tour in the style of "An Evening With" sounds like an exciting task! Here's a mix of some of their iconic tracks, deep cuts, and fan favorites that could make for an unforgettable evening:
    Act I:
    Pull Me Under
Metropolis Pt. 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper
    The Dance of Eternity
    The Spirit Carries On
Octavarium (Including "Razor's Edge" and "Full Circle")
    A Change of Seasons
    Intermission
    Act II:
In the Presence of Enemies Pt. 1 & 2
    Beyond This Life
    Home
    As I Am
    Breaking All Illusions
    The Count of Tuscany
    Encore:
    Learning to Live
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (Including all parts)
    Finally Free
This setlist aims to capture the essence of Dream Theater's journey over the past four decades, showcasing their musical prowess, diversity, and ability to craft intricate and emotive compositions. Of course, with such a vast discography and loyal fanbase, there are numerous other songs that could make the list as well!"
