  • Nepeta racemosa ‘Walker’s Low’, commonly known as Catmint
Nepeta racemosa ‘Walker’s Low’ is a herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae).
It is native to the mountainous regions of Iran, Turkey, and the Caucasus.
The name “Walker’s Low” is somewhat misleading, as it doesn’t refer to its height but rather to the location where it was discovered (the garden of a Mrs. Walker in England).
The plant forms a compact mound of aromatic, gray-green foliage.
    Appearance:
    Flowers:
The most striking feature of ‘Walker’s Low’ is its lavender-blue blooms.
These flowers appear on short spikes in early summer.
If you deadhead (remove spent flowers), it can continue blooming sporadically through early fall.
    Foliage:
The leaves are gray-green and have a pleasant, minty fragrance when crushed.
They provide a nice contrast to the vibrant flowers.
Plant ‘Walker’s Low’ in full sun to part shade for optimal growth.
    Soil:
It prefers well-draining soil and can tolerate a range of soil types.
Avoid overly wet or waterlogged soil.
    Watering:
Once established, it is relatively drought-tolerant.
    Water moderately during dry spells.
    Maintenance:
Regularly deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
Cut back the entire plant after the first flush of flowers to promote fresh growth.
Divide the clumps every few years to maintain vigor.
‘Walker’s Low’ is widely used as an ornamental plant in gardens and landscapes.
It works well in borders, rock gardens, and cottage-style gardens.
    Attracts Pollinators:
The fragrant flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
    Deer-Resistant:
It is relatively deer-resistant, making it a good choice for areas with deer pressure.
    Fun Fact:
Despite the name, ‘Walker’s Low’ is not a low-growing plant. It typically reaches a height of around 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm).
Remember to consider your local climate and growing conditions when planting ‘Walker’s Low’. It’s a delightful addition to any garden, especially if you appreciate its lovely blooms and aromatic foliage! 🌿🌸
