  • Catnip is a really easy-to-grow herb. Growing catnip from seed is easy. Catnip is in the mint family and grows almost vigorously as mint. Catnip is a beautiful herb that is easy to incorporate into your diet as well.
Our cats don’t like catnip! However, I still grow it because it’s healthy and beautiful.
You can grow catnip in garden beds - beware it may spread quicker than you want - or grow catnip in containers.
Something you and your cat can both enjoy together - Grow Your Own Catnip!

I can't wait for warmer weather here in Australia as I got seeds for cat mint, cat grass and catnip. Taking the seeds out of the envelope they came in, my cat jumped from her sleeping position and checked out the packets of seed, even getting them back out now to write down here what I got, she is rolling around at my feet. So obviously she is already loving them as seeds.

Being from Canada - which so many people presume is always cold (it's not), I realize my own ignorance when you write that you're waiting for warmer weather in Australia. It seems I presumed 'it's always warm' :)
Sounds like your kitty is is ready to go.

My cat is uninterested in fresh catnip but goes nuts for dry catnip. I’ve actually been tearing any catnip out of the garden because it attracts other outside cats who then flop all over it flattening out garden plants. My own cat stays inside to provide safety to the birds of my native wildlife pollinator garden, so I didn’t think it was fair to grow something that attracts other cats. Alas. Yes catnip is very calming and relaxing, to humans. Had I a greenhouse I’d grow it there, great idea.

You can grow it in pots..
For the cat who doesn't like fresh, try gently crushing the leaves in your hand. This is what releases the scent of the chemicals that attracts cats. Maybe even include flower. I enjoy it for myself as well..either 🚬 or ☕️

I have been growing catnip indoors under a grow light for months and just snipping the leaves off and letting my cats have them that way. They love it. I'd like to try to harvest seeds from the plants but I'm not very familiar with that process as I'm not only new to gardening in general but this is my first year gardening catnip and my first time trying to harvest seeds for future use. I watched a video recently that said to let the flower basically die/fully dry out and then cut it off to harvest the seeds. I see that you cut off a fresh flowering head, I wasn't aware you could do that. Can you harvest the seeds like that or will you have to let that bit that you were holding dry out and then harvest the seeds? I'm a bit lost on the best way to do this and I don't want to lose out on the opportunity to collect seeds and have to buy more in the future. I'd greatly appreciate any advice you have. Thank you for the video and your time!

I have fresh catnip and im feeding them fresh leaves every nnow and then.
First off, i dont let them flower.
If i give the cats some fresh leaves, i take a leaf and mosh between my finger so that the smell goes through, they will eat if!
My best tips that you already know is to dry it :D

I raise oriental shorthair cats and it is about a 50/50 on who loves it and who doesn’t. Some are happy drunks and some get to be angry drunks. Most importantly, they love roasted pumpkin seeds. Such little weirdos.😂😂

A friend of mine is sending me a cutting from her catnip plant. I’ll get it this week. I live in Oklahoma. I have an unheated enclosed patio but I think it’ll be too cold in January for that cutting which I guess should be planted outside in spring. What type of soil would you suggest and should I grow it indoors this winter? Thanks. I have cats that like catnip but I’ve never grown it. They’ve only had it dried. I’m so excited to get this cutting. It’s coming from Washington state so it should do fine in Oklahoma winters when it gets rooted and adjusted.

    • @SustainableStace
      @SustainableStace  Год назад +1

Will it be showing up with roots or without roots?
You'll need root it (if it's not coming with roots) and to plant it pronto when you receive it. Potting soil should be great for it.
Indoors will likely be needed to make it thru the winter. Like mint, it will die off over winter if it's outdoors.
You're cats will love you even more !
