So you got to test the new 50mm Apo Lenses from Voigtländer. As you may know the focal length 50mm are not me a Lens I normally like, BUT now I have bought the Voigtländer Nokton 50mm 1.0 Aspherical for Sony, because I wanted a Lens where I can take photos at night time, I have tried it now for some days and it is great, really nice to photograph at aperture 1.0 and no need to push the ISO.
I still use my favorite, a Leica Elmar-M 50mm f2.8 collapsible, on my MP film body. It’s got the character and feel of the old days which suits my old ways. If the Apo-Lanthar collapsed like the old ‘50s, the “Way-cool factor” would be a hook for me! I like your attention to details, Matt! Best wishes!
Great vid as usual! How spoiled are we these days with so many great choices… most are far too sharp for me, but I understand majority of buyers want razor sharpness corner to corner, which makes sense. Was looking at the 43mm q3 with APO and thought i can soften it with glimmerglass, then realised how insane that is. Spend a fortune for a sharp lens then try and mitigate sharpness to get a look i like.
I feel like the secret strength of the older Heliar f/3.5 was how good portraits looked with it. Arguably too sharp at times, but if you want a portrait to be crisp and have some bite, while still having a fairly smooth rendering, it worked well. Particularly in black and white. Maybe there’s some of that to the APO f/3.5.
Bloody hell! 0.35m is twice as close as 0.7m rangefinder standard! But, I think like you said in the end, Matt, the excitement ends there, it is is a f/2.5, that will be a lot more exciting. The Type I is just an odd conception, a non-collapsible collapsible lens that also have a longer minimal focus that the sister lens even though it is technically rigid. This is more niche that I might like it to.
Like always a very good review! I really like your very pragmatic reviews! In the last two years Voigtländer did a great job with their different lenses.
A fake collapsible? Certainly something unique ha! Probably not a lens for me but thankful for everyone that is going to use this on an M, those soft stops will save a lot of photos!
Thanks for another thoughtful, informed lens review. While I am not running out to buy any lenses right now I do file away what you report for future use. The "Osborne Reference Library". And I suspect that I am not alone in this. Cheers
Hi Matt, great review as always! Speaking of Voigtländer 50mm lenses, I was wondering if you’ve had a chance to try the new 50mm f/2.2 Color-Skopar. Thanks!
I recently got a Voigtländer nickel-plated Heliar-LTM 50 mm f/3.5 (truly) collapsible lens and an LTM to M adapter. The lens is a thing of beauty, and performs quite well (sharp, contrasty images). I’m a little concerned about the collapsed lens’ ability to hit a shutter or sensor on modern digital Leica cameras, so I’ll add a rubber band to it to stop it from completely collapsing.
Servus Matt✌✌ Thanks for showing and introducing both lenses, at least a small ray of hope as far as the focusing distance is concerned, at least with the newer models the Flektogon is one of my favourites, but 35mm and has a focusing distance of approx. 16cm which was already excellent at that time and paired with Leica probably even more so that you can use it that way and I am also happy about that although adapted from M42. and I wouldn't want to be without it. Maybe Leica will come up with such innovations in the future, great video as always but you know that yourself. I'm already looking forward to the next one. Lg Anderl
Hello Matt, thanks for sharing the knowledge. I have a canon 7 with a 50mm f1.4 lens, and I would like to know if there is a close focus adapter for it. I'm not interested in using an adapter to use on my M body & using a close focus. I just want closer focus utilizing the Canon 7 & the 50mm 1.4 lens. Thank you in advance, Floyd
A bit strange offering from Voigtlander. A ‘Collapsable’ design that doesn’t collapse, and a rigid version with a rotating focus mount (not mentioned?). I think the non-collapsible ‘Collapsable’ design was because they needed a stable mount for the APO quality. Reason for these maybe is to update the optical quality from the Heliar in a compact and light weight, slower, close-focus, and less expensive standard 50mm lens.
Now all we need is the M12 to have a hybrid EVF or full built in EVF. I know purists will cry bloody murder but I for one am all for Leica embracing new tech, or at least releasing an M body with built in EVF alongside the rangefinder for those who still want it and nothing else.
You can't use the rangefinder on an M below .7 of a metre anyway, so for film users you can't focus any closer, actually. Except with a tape measure or guesswork. Obviously, on a digital M or the SL you can use live view, but making M lenses that you can't actually use with the rangefinder 'experience', for which you pay a hefty premium, das Wesentliche, is a left-handed admission that a lot of M users don't give a damn about the rangefinder, let alone experiencing it. You've probably seen this in your workshops. By the way, the modern little 50mm f2.8 Elmar is a lovely lens, properly collapsible, comes in black and is, by Leica standards, not too expensive. Creamy and more forgiving than a Summicron.
Yes, this is a huge oversight by many Leica owners. I replaced some Leica lenses with Voigtlanders. See "Selling my Leica" video. Some other brands are great too so don't limit yourself.
Since you have Leica lenses I've never understood why you bother with lesser optics. A 50mm 3.5 APO collapsible that doesn't collapse and is optically inferior to their 50mm f2 staple? The selling point being?
That non-collapsible collapsible design is not attractive-maybe a little better looking than the cone they put on the older one, but why bother if it doesn’t collapse? Disappointed that the 50/2 beats this-does that hold throughout the range? How do these compare with the Thypoch?
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks!! I did order the Thypoch (limited brass version) so I’ll get to try it firsthand very soon, as it’s on its way. I love collapsible lenses on the M’s. Not because they look cool, but they’re very practical for walk-around!

That new and tiny Voigtlander 50mm f2.2 that was briefly shown in this video is really the one i'm most excited for at the moment.
I’ve got it, I just need to find time to make a video!

Thanks Jeff, nice! That’s why I use the Thypoch Eureka 50/2. See video. That is proper lens and great on my M3 etc.

Yes it always seems strange to buy a sharp lens then have to blur it. I now tend to use older lenses instead when I need a softer look.
Good to learn about the closer minimum focusing distances, and, that there is a soft stop at 0.7m. Well-done! Thanks!
Thanks Rex!
This time I bought the lens *before* the Matt Osbourne video! I’m really getting a hang of this leica owner thing.
Haha thanks, yes the video was a bit late coming out, sorry! (One more to come - new lens)
I actually like that it doesn’t collapse as it keeps less dust out of the sensor
sensible design
That's a nice way to look at it!

I know! Yes +1 for soft stops
You get to try out some pretty neat stuff! Love the look of the CV-50 that won’t collapse. I’ve got a Cron v5. It’s ok..
Thanks! Yes the Cron v5 is a great all rounder. I re-bought it a while ago.
Thanks for another thoughtful, informed lens review. While I am not running out to buy any lenses right now I do file away what you report for future use. The "Osborne Reference Library". And I suspect that I am not alone in this. Cheers
Thanks Sandy!
I really love Voigtlander. Not currently owning any but I had the Ultron 35mm 1.7 VM and wow what a lens. So much good stuff from this brand.
Yes the 35/1.7 is great!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom yours is one of the very few videos about that marvelous lens actually.
Wow, 0.35m ist really cool for creative portraits when you use it on an EVF or with live view.
Yes finally you M shooters can get close!
Hi Matt, great review as always! Speaking of Voigtländer 50mm lenses, I was wondering if you’ve had a chance to try the new 50mm f/2.2 Color-Skopar. Thanks!

Thanks, sorry none that I know of. You need to use dedicated close focus LTM lenses on Leica adapters.

Hybrid EVF? please not! The M12 should be a M not a Q camera. IBIS? why not, but please just an optical viewfinder.
+1 get rid of that primitive rangefinder in M12, EVF all the way
Ask Voigtlländer to build a rangefinder with an evf
@@stefanmelzer9943 Yes, I'll contact my executive contact in voigtlander right away
Ha yes, these new style CF lenses suit mirrorless users more than RF users so LV or EVF on current Ms.
The fake collapsible Voigtländer lens is a perfect match for the Leica M10-D with its fake film advance lever!
haha they both look the part, that's the main thing :)

Thanks, yes not for film. The DR and 2.8 you mention are the best options for film close focus
Hi Matt, does it make sense to bother about Voight if the budget is not tight and one can buy just a regular Leica lens?
Yes, this is a huge oversight by many Leica owners. I replaced some Leica lenses with Voigtlanders. See "Selling my Leica" video. Some other brands are great too so don't limit yourself.
Is the black paint version made from brass?
From memory I think so, the weights vary accordingly
Nuooo it doesn't collapse?!? Would have been really nice!
I know!!
Since you have Leica lenses I've never understood why you bother with lesser optics. A 50mm 3.5 APO collapsible that doesn't collapse and is optically inferior to their 50mm f2 staple? The selling point being?
I enjoy testing them all but equally Leica isn't always the best (well it depends what you want*)
WHAAAT!
That type 1 doesn't actually collapse? No, NO, NOOOOO!
Right!!

Disappointed that the 50/2 beats this-does that hold throughout the range?

Yes re. design. 50 f2 has always been great and is their sharpest 50 from my testing. Thypoch wins for other reasons. See that video.
