I'm a DOD Aircraft Maintainer Crew Chief on a military base. This is by far one of the coolest jobs I've seen the USAF have. My biggest question, if anyone knows, these guys have Flight Engineer duties. How often do Special Mission Aviators do maintenance on the platform they're working? Do they learn all of the systems on the specific platform and if something goes wrong in the air, try and help keep it flying until they can land safely and brief maintenance or do they actually do aircraft maintenance as well as everything else they do? I know long question, but was wondering how much actual maintenance do they perform.
They are not maintainers, however SMA's can perform basic troubleshooting whenever a malfunction arises (I.E. pulling a circuit breaker or resetting a system). Apart from an emergency scenario, they aren't qualified to perform repairs. These guys are in charge of operating aircraft systems along side pilots, though, so they're very knowledgeable.

For any pilot career in the Air Force, First step, applicants must be qualified to join the Air Force and apply for Officer Training School. OTS applicant must have any baccalaureate degree or be a senior at a college or university to apply. You must have earned a minimum GPA of 2.5 or better to be eligible to apply. OTS applicants will contact an Air Force Line recruiter to schedule an appointment. During the initial appointment qualifications are confirmed to include education, height & weight, medical history, law violations, etc. Second step, the recruiter will schedule the OTS applicant to take the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT). Third step, after taking the Air Force Officer Qualification Test (AFOQT) and receiving the results (may take 2-3 weeks). You and the Line Officer recruiter will work together on putting your OTS package together and submitting it to the OTS selection board. OTS is very competitive. Last step, IF selected you will receive one of the careers that YOU requested, qualified for, and serve in. You will then take your physical exam to confirm that you are medically qualified to join the Air Force and for that career. You will then attend OTS when your class date comes up. Officer Training School (OTS) is 9.5 weeks in duration at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. The entire process depending on which OTS selection board you apply for it may take anywhere from 6 months to over a year. Don Air Force and Space Force Recruiting Service

No gotta have perfect color vision
fr0styfx Thats dumb
Aidan McWhirter seems to me like being color blind when you may need to work with color coded electronics is a bad idea, nothing dumb about it.
Jonathon Lang I have color corrective lenses that totally fixes that problem. But even still I didn’t think about the electronics part of this. I forgot these guys do everything on the aircraft.
@@aidanmcwhirter2612 How is that dumb? What happens if you're ij the mix and your glasses vreak or fall off?
I have a quick question, can Special Missions Aviators cross train to become medics?
I do not believe that any type of medicine is in that career job description however, you can probably take Basic Life Support classes and become certified

Would you say a crew chief would fit this role
What are the requirements and ways I can become a gunner in a UH-60 or AH-64?
Falke, those are Army helicopters please contact the Army for their requirements. This is an Air Force page.

@@USAirForceRecruiting what about an A-10
For any pilot career in the Air Force,
First step, applicants must be qualified to join the Air Force and apply for Officer Training School.

@@OFWROL when he meant very competitive, he means VERY VERY VERY competitive. Like as in OTS has ZERO open spots now
@@forrestgumball this was a last resort plan, I’m probably never gonna go into service where I am right now.
How can I do this in guard? I would rather do this on a HH-60 than 15T crew chief in the army!
You will want to reach out to your area Guard recruiter to see if this field is available. If it is not in your area, you may also reach out to your area Reserve recruiter. What is your zip code?

I’ve been in contact with a recruiter. I’m a little hesitant to say this is the job I want, as I know getting the job wanted is slim. Is there a possibility that I could request a job and ship off with said job?
You may list this job on your listing if you qualify for it. You will provide a date you are available to leave after for basic training. The recruiter you have been in contact with can provide you with further information on the process.

I just started tech school as a 1A9, my advice is to be ready to ship. I went to meps on a Thursday and shipped out the next Tuesday.
Do I become a helicopter pilot in this job?
if i want to become AC-130 aircrew loader, need to become special mission aviator.
How hard is it to get this mos?
I got this mos, I ship in July. You just need around a 75 on your ASVAB and be healthy
Rey Jara I got a 72 should I retake it?
Evan Monast 72 should be fine depending on what you scored on the individual sections, you should be able to find the exact score you need on military.com
So I’m looking to be in this job. Is it popular in which there’s not a lot of openings.
Wendy, your Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test scores, physical exam, citizenship and moral standards determine your job/career qualifications.
- Ray
Very popular and the career field, less then 1200 people in it
I'm a 5'1 female, am I too short for this MOS?
yes, the minimum height is 64 inches, which is 5’3
Isabella, the Air Force does not use MOS as that is for other branches. For Air Force careers we have Air Force Specialty Code (AFSCs).
The minimum height for Enlisted flight careers is 5'4.
