- The Rescue and ST communities need hitters of all types- and that's exactly what Special Mission Aviators, or SMA's, are. They are responsible for keeping the aircraft in the air, maintenance, and being an active crew member- and they have been known to save your ass on the ground with a .50 cal or a minigun.
TSgt Derrick "Snooki" Schwenk came on to talk all things aviation and being a special mission aviator- and we can't say thanks enough!!!

I'm currently a high school senior and becoming a SMA is my dream. I've researched it tons and I really hope that I'll be able to demand the job like TSgt Derrick Schwenk did when he went into the recruiters office. Also I forgot to add that this was a great video, glad I found it
We shall see! Snooki is very convincing. - A
Yes sir he is haha
That’s awesome bro I’m in tech school rn as a SMA and it’s the best decision I ever made. This is the best career field of all the flyers I can’t wait to actually start working when I’m done with my training stick with it bro I did the same thing with my recruiter and I got the job eventually
@@AbroadBean hell yea man I can’t wait to start, how hard was it for you to get the job like how long did you have to wait?
@@AbroadBeanAny updates? Are you an SMA yet?
Cool to see you guys interviewing SOF supporting aircrew. Make us proud “Snooki”
Absolutely- and more to follow! - A
@@OnesReady Physical requirement......be able to pull a 120lb soaked fast rope at night on NVGs from a 50 ft hover....and hang that rope up. Repeat. Also....If you don't know how to swim...you'd better learn.
this is exactly the job ive been looking for. I KNEW it had to exist somewhere, just couldn't find it. LOVE this episode, I have so many questions lol thanks guys
Glad he mentioned CEARF in Fort Rucker, not a lot of people know about that step in training
Thank you, I will help people get back home, I will give it my all. Thank you for making me see the bigger picture.
Awesome career for smart, hardworking multitaskers!
Great episode!! Thanks so much guys!!
Thank you for sharing
🤗🏆❤️🙏
First off great interview, never clicked so fast, keep up the good vids, but Washout rate would’ve been a great question for incoming recruits watching and what they should know coming in.
He’s definitely wearing a Michigan football jersey during this interview. Go Blue!
SNOOKI! Love you bro!
We had high school to flight school FEs when I went gunner in 2004. Maybe they changed it after Pavelow went away. Curious to know if there was a change
Hey guys I just got news that they switched my job to SMA and I’m pretty happy about it. just have a question what aircraft has more deployments
I feel like SMAs are like a Jack Of All Trades when you really look at it. I plan on joining the Air Force in the next 4-6 years and I'm debating between becoming an SMA or PJ.
Bro same
@@nobstompah4850I feel like it's cool that SMA's can cross train as Medics in case you failed to become a PJ. The hardest part of Pararescue training is easily Combat Dive School due to its high dropout rate.
Awesome, good luck. Although the Jack of All Trades moniker has already been taken 😎
@@ConnorTheDJ24 Where did you hear that SMAs can cross train as medics?
My guy ✊🏾
How come the only training mentioned on the Air Force website is basic training and 27 day technical school?
I don’t know, why? (Assuming this is the setup for a funny joke). Also- not 27 days, but 27 weeks.
@@OnesReady no it literally says 27 days for technical training
Ah, got you- so, no clue why it doesn’t list out the pipeline or the on the job training requirements (just to get cleared to fly), but you’re right, that’s what it says. Short answer- you got me, my dude. 🤷- A
Because the basic 3 level course is only 27 training days so about 6 weeks
That is only the first step before all those other places he listed
From what I’ve researched, it is a short time at AIT (27 days) but you have about a year or more of on-the-job training before you do it completely by yourself
Because It doesn’t get old….Never 😂 🍻
facts lol😂
Fastest I've clicked on a video in a long time!
Appreciate you!!
We had a few highschool-flightschool FE’s in Pavelow (the first actually) They were mostly all very good. When did the AF stop allowing highschool to flight school engineers?
That was my question? We had a whole grip of em at the 551st and 512th at KAFB in 04
If you wanna do a Pavelow Aerial Gunner turned HH60G SMA interview, let's chat
If you'd like a V-22 FE (SMA) to come on and give our perspective, hit me up. Some major differences in mission, training, accession, and duties.
That would be awesome. Hit us up at info@onesready.com and we will go from there!
How do you become the pilot for the helicopter though?
Snookdawg
How well versed with mechanics would you need to be in order to get this job, I’m planning on enlisting with either SMA or loadmaster in a few months, but I don’t know much about mechanics yet. ( would 2 months of studying be enough to know the information I need in order to get this job?)
Awesome video btw
Zero experience in any of those fields needed.
Can you do this as a reservist?
Yes... lots of reserve units for SMA
Is it possible to get a height waiver because I really wanna do this job and I’m willing to work hard for this job I’m 5’1.
Sadly, no
Did you check the website. Literally one of the first requirements it states is height. 57.5 - 80 inches.
@@Navs126 I mean the recruiter said you can get a waiver for anything…
@@squiddy5889Talk with your recruiter. If he denies you go to the next one man. I “had” asthma. Spoke with one recruiter and he shut me down quick, went to the second and he also shut me down, went to my 3rd and he told me I’d have to take some test, and get a waiver.
Speak with the right kinds of people and you can do it.
How can I try and secure this job? I know that the air force chooses the job but I want to know if possible if I can somewhat most likely get it I want this job horribly and even know that I qualify for it I still feel sad knowing I can’t for sure get it.
Can a Special Missions Aviator get a commission and become an F-16 pilot or would I be better off being a Crew Chief and then being a pilot?
… it would be most efficient to just become an F16 pilot. Why do the other jobs first?
@@OnesReady because I figured that since the Air Force pays for college it would be a good way to get my foot in the door and if pilot training doesn't work I have those jobs to fall back on and I have to get my eyes corrected too since I wear glass.
If you want to hear from a former AC-130 SMA hit me up.
Hey man! How was the transition back to civilian life? I want to do something badass in the mil and also transition to the civilian side with a leg up.
@@dylanmartinez2157 after 24 years I wound up taking a job as an Air Force civilian so I kinda stayed in the Air Force 😎
@@briangrady367 that’s awesome, thanks for getting back! If I just wanted to do a 4yr stint with this job, and idea how I could squeeze as much out as possible?
I know SERE is included in the pipeline, but what are the odds of getting HALO/Airborne also? Any ideas how to transition to a decent job with decent pay when someone gets out?
@@briangrady367did you get to travel a lot w this job? also what aircrafts do you usually fly on
@@papap-o4u SMAs fly on AC-130, CV-22, and HH-60. I did travel quite a bit but not as much as some guys.
Man I really need to know if special missions aviator is family friendly at all. 😂 I figured it’s probably not but I’m married and I really wanted to do this or load master I just feel like I’d be gone too much. Please anyone let me know if you know anything. I go to meps tomorrow to pick my job 😂
Snooki is married and most of the SMA and Loadies we know are married. Not sure if that helps.
@@OnesReady I appreciate the reply! The job ended up being taken but I’m going in with fire protection on March 28th and maybe later I plan on cross training into an air crew job or special warfare. You guys have helped me learn a lot about many jobs so thank you!
Can a SMA go to Air Assault school?
Would love to speak with your cast as a transitioned Airman (Loggie, HH-60G SMA, First Sergeant). I believe i can add value to your podcast and am looking to expand my reach. My book is Endless Transition. For your consideration.
The future is dark, get back on the gun. That's some Warhammer type of stuff. If I ever have to see this grim dark future I'm going to bring a black templar challenge coin. Suffer not the unclean to live, and accept whatever challenge no matter the odds. It's kind of sobering to think that if we go near peer some of the people who watch your content to prep will make it, but they will also not make it through the war. This isn't just cool guy fun times, this is the grim darkness of the far future and there is only war.
Is this an option for Air National Guard…?
