Number of years back I had a CH-47 fly over my shop a week before Christmas. Went out to see what all the racket was knowing it was a Chinook only to see him circle around and make an approach to land. Grabbed my DLSR and got some great pics of the landing, handshakes, hugs and then watched them leave. I think the pilot's dad was a bailiff of the courts and this would be the only time they could see each other before heading east. They were heading to Hunter Airfield to load up for Afghanistan and made this pitstop.
God bless the SF guys taking care of business. I got to meet Al Mack a few years ago and got a signed copy of "Razor 03". This is the same guy that brought ODA 595 into the Hindu Kush back in October 2001. Legends.
This man - **right here** - is who we wish EVERY member of our military service could be. Honorable, honest, hard working, empathetic, steadfast, humble - if you aspire to be a leader, THIS man is who you should emulate. Well done sir - you have my thanks for your service.
Its how most of us were in the Armed Forces. Problem is you have people in society who never did shit who trying to jump on prior service members over anything they can when they themselves didn't have the guts to get down in Afghanistan with those of us who did
@@rl4416 I read his book Razor 03 earlier this year and he came across as a badass Night Stalker, absolutely the best of the best - CW5s are extremely rare. Then I watched a clip of an interview with him and was so surprised to find him to be such a soft spoken person.
This man is a coward. And I hope that our military is not like him. Do some actual research. Marcus ran, and he was found with all of his magazines.. they even found his first Magazine in the gun with only a couple of shots fired.
This man Is as Honorable and True as a FellowVeteran that I served with that was Also a 160th pilot. My Brother. CW-3 Shamp. Co-Pilot of Super 67 in the Mog.
Intense, What a guy. The stresses of war wore heavy on him but thank god he got the help he needed when he needed it.recounting his ordeals with his psychologist helped countless other service men. I’m in awe of his humility and humanity. Thanks
When I was in the Stan, 160th hardly ever flew support for our missions. Mostly came from 18th Aviation. The "nightstalkers " denied the missions multiple times partly because they were night missions. Lol. Not even kidding.
I was at Jalalabad PRT when this happened. I watch 2/3 Marines load up in Chinooks and get ready to go with Apache escorts, and then they suddenly cut the engines. I think Devil 6 (82nd Airborne Commander) made the call because they couldn't see any survivors on the ground and they didn't want to lose another Chinook. It was a sad moment I will never forget.
Shawn. I know you probably won't see this but just in case you do. Thank you. For giving the public a first hand look of how you and so many heroes kept us safe and fought for us to have the freedom we do today. I know u will say u just doing your Job. But to ME. YOU ARE ALL HEROES. TO ME. THANKS JOE
Well sir. Thank You so much for overcoming the pressure you were under during this period. Thank You for bringing our Lost Home. I hate I could not stand with you. But know I for one appreciate you , Shawn and our Fallen
Men…when he discusses breaking down between the two bee-hits… I had that happen to me after we did the recovery for extortion 17.. weeks just returned from going back into Tangi, we loaded all of the remains onto the CH47s and I just walked into the shower connex, full kit…stood in the shower and stared at my feet for about 20 minutes while the floor was covered in blood. I was just in a daze…I didn’t breakdown and cry about it until I was out of the service in a ptsd psych session. But god damn these moments….
Our military is loaded with amazing people, thank you for giving them a platform so the rest of us can appreciate and support them. Some of these people are super human! God bless all who serve, and Merry Christmas!
Thanks for telling the story. There are always "accounts" that somehow don't ring true so someone undeserving can make themselves out to be the hero. Your account rings true about this whole rescue. Thank you. Thank you for your service. I believe my brother-in-law was living at Bagram over the time this happened. Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jeff Peterson
From the deep perspective that only a veteran can bring, we need more of you in Congress running the country so we don't waste any more soldiers than is absolutely necessary.
160th is the shit. They pulled me out of some nasty situations as a Ranger. They made me know I could count on them. 1st and 3rd Ranger Btn here, for the record.
I never cease to be amazed at the military men who are so matter of fact about their roles; and are unafraid to admit to being scared but masking or using it to do their dangerous jobs anyhow. Brotherhood for strangers who stand beside them... epitomises the military spirit. I take my hat off in salute sir. Thank you for your service.
Lots of moving parts in this mish. USAF (Reserve) HH-60G Pavehawk #90-26227 picked up Luttrell. She'll be saved from the Boneyard and retired to the Pima Air & Space Museum. 227 was my bird and I had rotated home a week earlier. Two buddies of mine got the job to hack the mish.
Shawn - thank you ! Your show allows us to see the bravery of the soldier and then the human behind him. So damn proud of these guys that us back home never hears of !!
The next time you see a veteran or someone in uniform, please stop what you're doing and go talk to them, make sure you say thank you. The things they have seen and been through, your mind cannot fathom it, unless you been there. It was all so you can watch videos like this in the comfort of your home. They come back not the same people they were. Show respect. One thing I know is mankind won't see another world war. The ones doing what they are now in other Countries will soon be stopped. We have to start being who we are supposed to be, respectful and caring to one another, we have to be human. I have faith that we will. Thank you gentlemen, for sharing your life experiences. Thank you to everyone who has served, and to their families who stand by them.
We’ve worked with the nightstalkers many times (afsoc) infiltration of OIF from the west, absolutely the BEST pilots/crew on planet earth. - so much respect , NSDQ
Great job Al! It’s obvious to all that you’re a man that to this day stays true to the Army Values. You make us proud with the way you conduct yourself! Great job Al and thank you! Loyalty Duty Respect Selflessness Honor Integrity Personal Courage
as cool as the operator stories are, it's always great to hear the perspective of support elements, especially the pilots and aviation assets. gotta make time for this one
This fella is awesome. Its great to see the humanity in studs and know they've accomplished shlt most people couldn't even dream about. Top notch guy there; he's got a really good demeanor.
Hi Shawn, thanks for all your amazing content. It would be great if you could interview one of the old Recces from South Africa. They did recon during the Angola border war and was a superb special ops unit.
for anyone who doesnt know what BAT 21 is look it up, the story its nuts. It shows just how far the military would go to make sure someone with important info doesnt fall into enemy hands. The man responsible for getting Iceal Hambleton the downed aircrewman back to safety was a navy SEAL named Tommy Norris and a vietnamese SEAL equivalent named Nguyễn Văn Kiệt. They dressed up like vietnamese fisherman and took a small boat down a river past enemy lines to where hambleton and another pilot who was shot down trying to rescue hambleton were hiding and got them the hell outta there. Norris was awarded the medal of honor for this. On Halloween 1972 Norris was shot in the head by an AK round but managed to survive thanks to his teammate Michael E Thornton who was awarded the MoH for saving basically the entire team and swimming miles dragging Tommy and a vietnamese teammate after fighting for hours and taking large amounts of shrapnel to the back and legs. Its funny seeing them in interviews together because Thornton is a giant of a man and Norris is tiny in comparison, its like looking at spike and tyke from the old tom and jerry cartoons
One of those memories you NEVER forget is the first time flying with these guys, and the question posed right when you take off: "Okay, who here's been in a helicopter crash?" First thought is are you planning on one?? Sadly, there were about 6 of us on that flight that had to raise our hands. Another thing you just can't really get out of your head, your first helicopter crash . . .
My father was in 7th group back in the early 90s and said he enjoyed his time in service but he told me if he had the chance to do it over again he’d become a pilot for the 160th. That’s how much respect SF guys have for their pilots. They’re the best of the best.
I listened to the whole show, Macks story with his wife, hit hard because I went through the same thing. Lost my wife to opioid overdose in 2008. Deployments make it hard to deal with when you cant be at home.
As a pilot, you have to learn to put on that 'face' he talks about at the end in situations like that. Fear is contagious and a scared passenger asking a million questions, crying, etc is a dangerous distraction. As I learned how to put on that 'face' I came to respect at a much higher level those who have to keep that 'face' on in situations like this gentleman faced. The key is after the event where you had to put that on is to find a place to remove that 'face' and release (in a healthy way) as soon as you can the emotions that 'face' held back.
Wow Alan. Thank you. An important story and piece of history well told. My son wants to join up and fly for the 160th. He's getting Razor 03 for Christmas. Thanks again.
It sounds to me like Mr. Luttrell's fight or flight response kicked in and saved his life that day. I wish that the whole team had run. They come up against a enemy force that was 100% larger (8 vs 4), had a fortified, high ground position, and had superior firepower. (belt feds and rpgs) What was the value of making a last stand in this scenerio? It seems to me to be a literal case of, "Is this the hill you want to die on?"
Unbelievable. But, having lived through the Rhodesian Bush War and seen what our guys did with out of date Alouette IIIs I have zero doubts about the 160th SOAR. Salute, gentlemen!
There was a fourth option. Since the op was already cancelled by Murphy, Walk the hands tied goat herders up the mountain to an alternate extract site. Call a chopper. Release captives prior to extraction. I’m not a veteran. Forgive me for speaking. Just wondering why it wasn’t considered.

Same guy + a million support people and everybody on the crew
What a wonderful group of men. Thank God for men like these.
Amen!
This man - **right here** - is who we wish EVERY member of our military service could be. Honorable, honest, hard working, empathetic, steadfast, humble - if you aspire to be a leader, THIS man is who you should emulate. Well done sir - you have my thanks for your service.
I love the fact that alot of dangerous men can also be humble and soft spoken.
Its how most of us were in the Armed Forces. Problem is you have people in society who never did shit who trying to jump on prior service members over anything they can when they themselves didn't have the guts to get down in Afghanistan with those of us who did

Thanks!
A pilot that knows about shifting fires and lifting fires is deadly badass! 🇺🇸
What a fantastic story. Thank you both for your service!!🇺🇸
Sierra Hotel Al. I was honored to work with the 160th many times in some not so friendly skies. Awesome!
Absolutely thank you for your service. I know that gets said a lot, but it comes from my heart.
Thank GOD we have men like this on our side 🇺🇸✝️🙏🏽
Intense, What a guy. The stresses of war wore heavy on him but thank god he got the help he needed when he needed it.recounting his ordeals with his psychologist helped countless other service men. I’m in awe of his humility and humanity. Thanks
These frickin pilots are some amazingly skilled and have incredible intestinal fortitude and guts especially these 160th soars night stalkers.
They are no joke! I worked with them at JBLM
When I was in the Stan, 160th hardly ever flew support for our missions. Mostly came from 18th Aviation. The "nightstalkers " denied the missions multiple times partly because they were night missions. Lol. Not even kidding.
"The SF guys kinda took care of business" I felt that 🙂🔥
🙌🏼 💯 🇺🇸
Stay Alert Stay Alive…Airborne!
Slight understatement
That’s what SF does. They just don’t write books about it.
Not marcus 😂
What a leader, grateful to hear his perspective.
Thanks Shawn!
Yay J-bad!!! I was there later, there nonetheless.
Was at A-bad ‘12-‘14 as well
BULL SHIT !
YOUR TALKING OUT YOUR ASS

HUGE RESPECT from UK
The men who should be Generals. This is the leadership we need
100%
Agreed. But listening to the podcast, I think this man was exactly who he was meant to be in this life. Mad respect.
A good talk by a Respectable Man.
160th is the shit. They pulled me out of some nasty situations as a Ranger. They made me know I could count on them. 1st and 3rd Ranger Btn here, for the record.
Real of the real the Rangers! Thank you for your service 🇺🇸
4th BN 47G Nightstalker Pilot here, glad the boys took good care of you, I may have flown you around a few times.
Seems like 160th SOAR attracts lead more than any other...like the little pint-size Marine in weapons company...true shit-magnets!!!
Ooh Rah Al!!
LOVE our Rangers!!!

The real truth comes out which already knew. Well Done, Chief. Impressive story and proof legends have feelings and they exist among us.
It was truly an honor to meet this man.

Wow what a testimonial… That’s an intense and masterful story.
My kingdom for s flightline drivers badge. Great ground truth Al. Was an honor to work with you as a young pilot.
Damn. That was the best, Shawn. Tears flowing here in Jacksonville Florida.
Gville too ❤

These SOAR pilots are some BAD mfers. Ive heard a lot of SF guys talk with such admiration about SOAR
Nothing else like them.
Great job Al! It’s obvious to all that you’re a man that to this day stays true to the Army Values. You make us proud with the way you conduct yourself! Great job Al and thank you!

that was a badass story, and I even knew what a couple of those words were!
Did my time in the N2KL region of RC East. Nothing but love to all my brother and sisters in arms that did what we had to do.
Thanks dude
Listed to every minute, just wow!
Rest In Peace to the men whose last moments were spent on that mountain. May God have mercy on their souls. 🇺🇸
Great interview. Thank you.
Hell of a day. Heck of an encounter. ❤
Unreal good story. Our nations best. We love our military here in GA
My BIL is a veteran BH pilot of the 160th SOAR of the days immediately before the Blackhawk Down period. Hell of a man. As is Mack. Big brass ones. .
Amazing warriors. 160th is truly under appreciated. NSDQ

I'm currently at Joint Firepowers Course and this hit like a training tool
Great interview.
Great interview
Thanks guys....

OUTSTANDING !!!! Sir. You and others like you is why no body will screw with the United Sates.
What an absolute warrior
One of these shows need to get a korean vet on here not alot stories out there
I'd much rather listen to that. They seem to be the last era of characteristics in People I like in how they presented and carry themselves.
Amazing Story
Damn Shawn, I still cry when I hear shit like that!
Unbelievable. But, having lived through the Rhodesian Bush War and seen what our guys did with out of date Alouette IIIs I have zero doubts about the 160th SOAR. Salute, gentlemen!
God Bless you.
*"The Cowardly Survivor"* Fixed it for ya...
Wow...that was an insane story. Thank you!
What a story he has to tell. Truly amazing.
What an amazing man! What a leader!!
GOD Bless our Veterans

Excellent episode. Thanks
Man, these are fantastic stories by incredible Men.
