    Rajah O'Hara was the last queen, at least on the regular US seasons, to have a two-dimension villain edit. After that not only the queens have become too cautious about how they come across on the show and the consequences that may come with it, but you can see that after season 11, there was a shift in editing where there was this caution of not turning any queen into a 2-D villain and to give some layering to the queens that come across as shadier in order not to make them too unlikeable. For example, Daya Betty started out season 14 with an apparent villain edit but as the season went on, the editing showed that there were more layers to how she was that ended up brushing away all the initial perceptions of her. Even with Plane Jane, arguably the post-season13 queen that ruffled the most feathers among the viewers during her run in the show, there was this concern.

    • @airtempest8945
      @airtempest8945 3 месяца назад +1

      I think that Ra'jah is the last villain edit and Daya is the last true villain of the show (Not in a bad way btw).
      Daya truly is the last bastion of reality TV show villains of old, since unlike someone like a Plane Jane, who I do think was kind of going for the "Redeemed villain" arc, you can tell Daya is legit just there to screw with the rest of the cast knowing that she has no shot of winning because of them booting her episode one, so she may as well have fun and get production to want her to make it far.
      That's what made me fall in love with her tbh (Though really the whole S14 cast is stacked beyond belief and is just hampered by the sheer length of the season).

    Rajah is one of, if not my favorite queen of all time. And I’ll be honest a large part of it is the ‘villain’ edit she got in S11. I felt like she was relatable. In a room full of queens who were cheered on the judges no matter how poorly or mediocre they were in moments, she was trying her absolute best and then having her peers poke at her for reactions. It felt more like a prototype for the Jan edit than a villain edit for me.

    There are a couple of reasons for this shift. Firstly, a true villain has to always be dehumanised, in the sense that we don’t see their true emotions or get a decent backstory. Production has been (rightfully) less willing to do this recently. Secondly, because of social media, queens have more personal contact with their fans, meaning that even if production decides to dehumanise them on screen, they still control to some extent how they’re received by the fans.

    I know some of Rajah's lines on S11 were out of order, but she was actually one of my favourites from the start because it seemed like most of her demeanour came from being under tons of pressure, as well as noticing the buffoonery in the production. I found her charismatic and hilarious, despite her jabs, so her redemption was even more satisfying, because I knew that a lot of people didn't share the same opinion about her. I feel like it’s kinda good in some ways not to have a pure villain anymore much as I miss it. Reality TV of the 2000s relied on that trope but also much of it (like Next Top Model or maybe even more like Survivor) didn’t really anticipate contestants having much of a public presence after the show or really cared about what happened to them at all (NTM was never actually interested in producing successful models) whereas Rupaul’s Drag Race I think does have more care for how the contestants do afterward, in part because they stay with the brand forever unless they get on bad graces and also because the success of the show does kinda hinge on the continued success of even the most filler queens, even if not all the gigs they do are affiliated. So because the villain story works to create an ignominious figure out of the contestant it doesn’t work as well when said contestant is a hugely visible figure within the industry the show is portraying. For better or worse Drag Race is the engine that runs Drag more broadly unlike something like Top Model which is a funhouse mirror of a more serious industry but had little influence

    I mean the difference is clear; it depends on what the "villain" actually says. Plane Jane only really got nasty with Amanda but Amanda always snapped back with an even better retort so Plane came clean out of it. Everything else she said was just trolling. Contrast this with Rajah's confessionals on Yvie that just felt so personal, PhiPhi's Jiggly drama that just looked so stupid (cause Jiggly was not a threat so what was that even about?) or even Luxx choosing that exact wording for Lucy in S15. I just think some queens made really poor choices with the materials they provided to the producers cause in no context is calling someone ugly and smelly OK so I cannot really give you the benefit of the doubt. There is a difference between shade and reading.
    That said for me, Ra'jah handled the situation very well in her S11 Reunion and I know some queens were calling her out during that reunion but for me her apology did feel genuine though very poorly phrased. And it helped that anyone who was even distantly unbiased knew that her elimination was bullshit when the bottom two at that episode felt completely random (with imo Silky having the worst look and Nina being barely less bad while Rajah was safe or even high and A'keria was low at worst)
    Also I think for a villain to really work in Drag Race, they need to be successful at the show itself.

  • @claudionosotti8812
    @claudionosotti8812 3 месяца назад

    To me the real difference between a "Villain" and a queen that comes across as just mean spirited is the fact that in the former case there's someone that plays the "Hero" and that actively clashes with them;
    Jaremi had "her" in S4 and Alyssa during AS2, Ra'Jah had Yvie which was always letting her have it and, on a lesser extent, Plastique and Scarlet shading her back, Plane Jane had Amanda always clapping back, they were creating drama bc everyone was involved in the drama, they always said to each other faces what they thought.
    Kandy had a full blown fight with Tamisha that wasn't going to let her behave like that.
    Brita too, in a way, had people confronting her behaviour, like Heidi lashing out and Aiden herself snapping back at one point.
    Roxxxy was absolutely a mean girl and a bully against Jinkx in S5, but even if Jinkx dind't clap back to her most of the time (I believe Alaska said she did, but the edit didn't show it as much), she defended herself in front of other ppl with things like the water off a duck's back line.
    The Kween and Kitty thing is that we never see Nehellenia defending herself or dishing it back or coming for them, what we're seeing is two queens downplaying her, shading her, saying mean things in confessional but almost never to her face, and then we see Nehellenia being sweet with them, congratulating their performances and acting like a friend - like in the makeover episode where we hear Nehellenia saying to Kitty that the judges didn't hate her look and called her beautiful and she shouldn't feel like a failure, and immediately Kween goes on the offensive and the confessional shows us Kitty backing her up. That's not "drama" and it's not enjoyable, it just reads as them acting like bullies to a person that's doing nothing wrong to even explain, let alone justifying, why they're behaving like that. They're creating a "Villain" narrative but without a real "Hero" to back it up and make it enjoyable. Nehellenia is just a victim - either bc she didn't actually respond to them or bc they're editing her to look like one.
    With that being said, ofc Kween and Kitty do not deserve the absolutely horrifying comments they're receiving and a lot of fans should really log off and go self reflect on their miserable life, but at the same time I can see why the general reaction to their behaviour on this season was so harsh and just a minority of the fans are on their side, expecially if you add the clear favouritism they're given by the production, which was never a thing for villains until Kandy Muse.

    I never hated rajah on s11. I tend not to hate any queens because 1. I think its ridiculous to put that negative energy from you onto someone. And 2. Its a pressure cooker in a competition when youre competiting for something you put all your hard work in.
    But on s11 i just saw a queen who spoke her mind and saw a person who didnt want to show emotions (that vulnerability) but on as6, oh my god i was mesmerized! It was a complete turn around and just a glow up of the actual person she is and she was beaming. And it all made sense in the finale when she said she came in s11 a premature diamond...she was rock but with enough pressure and time she turned into diamond and we saw who she really was. So i live for rajah and tend to give rugirls grace when seeing them on tv cause as tati famously said "what you see isnt always the truth"

    I had a little trouble watching some of her interactions with Scarlet Envy on season 11. However, by no means did she deserve any hate, I think she was just young and had some growing to do. Like we all do! It must be hard being in the public eye and being nearly nailed to a cross for every single one of your flaws, so I def wish she never suffered any of that bullying from the “fans.” NO one is perfect, and this queen obviously blossomed and learned from her younger self.

    I think the edit of the queens has changed just as much as the queens themselves. Here's the thing, there are plenty of queens that could be considered "villains" in the modern season, but they just get a more fleshed out storylines. You mentioned Plane and Mistress, which I agree with because they could've been edited to look a lot nastier in the final cut. I think another big example is Trinity K Bonet on AS6. They easily could've edited her to look like a petulant, ungrateful, annoying person, but instead they gave her a more well-rounded portrayal of her genuine human emotions. Even with season 12, there was that rumor that Gigi was the villain and originally had that storyline, which you can still see remnants of in the final season. I think production and the editors are also now wary of how a full-blown villain edit can destroy the careers of these queens and are trying to avoid it.
    My theory is that with Global All Stars, they're making Kween and Kitty look like the villains so it'll give them an excuse to crown Alyssa or Nehellenia. This theory is sorta backed up by the fact that the editing team is not the traditional US one, so they may not be as careful or knowledgeable about the power/consequences that come with an outright villain edit. I don't know, that whole season is weird so I could be completely off.
