I had the honor of training with these two men for 3 years, from 05-08. They taught me a lot about what it means to trains hard. Forever grateful for the time you two put into me. -Chewy
@@WestsideBarbellOfficial The one that comes to mind the most was my second or third workout their. I was 19 years old and squatting with Gritter on the red bar and he was killing me. He was a master with the bar because that was all he could use because of his arms not being able to bend. Right before one of my last sets he slapped me across the face and told me I better pick it up and not let an old man beat me if I wanted to stay there. Needless to say. He made his point and I learned a valuable lesson to take every set serious.
That’s for these podcasts and all the work you’re doing there Tom. These new podcasts with the old members are great. The old history is really fascinating.
This podcast shouldn’t of taken this long to come out. This is absolute gold and I fucking love that we got it regardless of time. Coe and gritter deserve the love Louie has
This podcast is outstanding. As someone who followed and competed against some Westside lifters of the 1990s, it is great to hear the behind the scenes information about that gym and its members. The reverence every one has for Louie is so genuine. I am glad I got to meet him once and thank him in person in York in 1999 at an IPA Worlds.
Thanks for producing this interview. I am very privileged to have the memories that I have from knowing Gritter. I've told people that being coached by him was like having Woody Hayes and Bobby Knight rolled into one! LOL! I wouldn't have had it any other way. He demanded effort. If you gave your best effort, he would have your back in any situation. But it wasn't only intensity that made Gritt a great coach- he has an eye for watching technique that sees what most coaches do not. And let's be honest - Gritt is a very humble man. He was a helluva lot better as a lifter than he gives himself credit for.
@@WestsideBarbellOfficial the things they said was a wake up call to me. I’ve just been coasting through training and ignoring stuff I should be getting better at. I had my best session in years today because of it
Thanks so much for this, it is so great to hear the history from "the horse's mouth" so to speak!!! Bob and Gritter have some incredible lifting stories, but the funny personal stuff is amazing as well.
Been reading Louie's book on history of Westside. Learning about all the lifters and now seeing them here is pretty awesome. His book Last Samurai is a can't put down book.
This is fascinating. Westside sounds like it was insane. You could do a Wolf of Wall Street type of insane movie about blue collar powerlifters at Westside. The night crew sounds more sane than the morning crew who sound like madmen who loved to lift weights, brawl, drink, and party.
I’m not sure if it’s hard for him to talk about at all, but I wish Bob would’ve talked a bit about the specific sacrifice of missing his son’s sporting events and other things due to his loyalty and consistency in training like he touched on in Westside vs the World. I have a young son and I really felt that when I saw the documentary. I question so many times what the right thing to do is when it comes to the dichotomy of family and your passions in life. There is so much history in these podcasts. The layman may see them as boring, but I almost get choked up hearing the stories and imagining what it was like. The privileged few will ever know what it’s like to be so dedicated to anything in their lives. I’m sure we all wish that would be different. Thanks for another good one.
@@WestsideBarbellOfficial I love the content, of course, but I truly appreciate that you’re approaching this as a sports historian and preservationist. Thanks again
About 30 minutes into this video you hit the nail on the head this guys did these guys are not nearly as strong as everybody thinks without that equipment most of these guys are not even 400 lb bench presses which by the way 400 lb roll is an absolutely great bench I had a 465 I've worked out with guys that can look like they could flip over a car that can't bench 405 these guys are full of crap without them bench shirts and squat suits most of these guys I mean just look at the way they're built they're not even built right that's because they only do certain stuff and those shirts just make it to where you don't develop certain muscles and know squat suits and everything
Can someone PLEASE do a collection of old school WSBB lifters doing "The Louie Voice" please.
Now that's a very funny idea
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I think Smelly does the best one
@@timandrews1028 you may be right
