  • Here is part 1 of a 3-part video for the studio recording of GALLOWS POLE (Gallow's Pole) from Led Zeppelin III.
I don't mention in this video a particular accent he does earlier in the song in a big chorus **(@2:30ish Hangman, Hangman upon your face a smile *BOOM *BOOM on the bassdrum), it's there-he does it once I believe if you're playing the song throw it in there-it punctuates the song nicely! I was so keen to explain the rest of the song I neglected to put that part in.

You've put it in words, what I've been feeling about this song since I started listening 25 years ago (I am not that old). The complexity of it, the subtle shifts in stress, the ambiguity. Great demonstration!

I love your lessons man! It's helpful, but you're funny as hell too so that helps me learn. If I am able to laugh while I'm learning something, i usually got it because I was able to laugh. Thank you

At around 18:40-ish when you are trying to explain how the beat flows after the 3 crashes, what you do there is substitute a bass drum hit for the snare hit on the down beat at the 1. So the crashes are the little 1/2 bar and the count for the sequence (starting at the half bar) is 1,2 - 1,2,3,4. So the cymbal hits are 1,2 - 1. During that third cymbal crash (on the one) hit you also kick the bass drum (instead of the snare), and then again on the two. S-B S-B SB BSB C C B-B S-B SB BSB.

It ain't just you bud, happens often enough to me and its always a little freaky until your brain catches up to what song is actually playing. Similar IMHO, is when your driving, your mind wanders for a minute or so and suddenly your not sure where on the highway you are - even one you've driven daily. If it starts happenin' all the time, then maybe its time to start worryin' :-) Keep up the good work !!

Perhaps you can think of it as 16ths on the snare with accents on the downbeat of one and two then "mammy-daddy" on the three and four. "mama-daddy" being 16ths played between the hands and foot. Three-e-and-a, four-e-and-a. Three-e and four-e accents with the hands and the and-a's with the foot. Maybe that can help.

ditto papakeetee. not being a di•k here but these videos are difficult to follow-all that random jumping around and asides. I don't drum but I have given a lot of science presentations, and these habits are definitely one's to lose. just friendly advice, no flames here.
