    Doesn't matter that Leeds lost, what Leeds achieved in this era is quite remarkable and yet underappreciated. Just ten years before this match an anonymous, unknown club, and here just ten years later playing a european cup final, not as underdogs but dominating the reigning champions. There is no "rags to riches" story in football that can match what leeds did in this era

      I agree that Leeds had ten impressive years between 1965-1975, winning the league twice and finishing as runner-up five times and also reaching the Cup Winners Cup final in 1973 (losing to AC Milan). But in my opinion Nottingham Forest's journey from "rags to riches", winning The European Cup both 1979 and 1980 were more sensational. Today they are more "rags" than Leeds.even... 😌

      As a Revie-era Leeds fanatic I concede Clough's achievements at Forest were incredible - he was a football genius. But so too was the much maligned Revie. In 1962 he had a vision of an English Real Madrid and gathered together a group of teenagers together with Charlton, Giles and Collins to create the most EPIC footballing side in post war English history. In their first season back in the top flight they missed the double by a whisker. They were like David overthrowing Goliaths. Twice more they went within a whisker of the double (1970 and 72). Fixture congestion meant they fell short. This in the days when finance did not favour sides over each other and there were many top sides. But how extraordinarily audacious that side were. Ultimately football is not about the trophy count, it is about the courage and ambition of a team working together like a single organism. Football turns us on when we see human endeavour triumphing - how cold today's billionaire clubs are, no champions among them IMO. Watching that Leeds side play was a thrill that is hard to replicate. If you never saw them, you missed out.

      Agree with all the above comments, in varying degrees. I remember seeing this game live as a 12-year-old. Watching the replay, I still feel sick for Leeds. I'm not a fan, but they were a majestic team at their peak - every bit as good, and maybe better, than the later Liverpool teams that won serial European cups. Yes, it's about the courage and ambition. Nottingham Forest's achievements were greater, but they didn't play with the swagger of Leeds in their prime.

    No chances for Bayern in the first half. For Leeds Yorath, Clarke, Madeley and Lorimer all have chances - Leeds on top definitely. All the referee decisions going for Bayern - clear penalty on Clarke and also a hand ball. I've always believed this referee was in Bayern's pocket. Watching it again, still probable.

    • @charlesjohnson9249
      @charlesjohnson9249 6 лет назад +15

      Yorath should have been banned for the rest of his life for his brutal attack in the 4th minute after the ref´s whistle against Andersson and Gray ended Hoeneß´ career!
      So even if you would have been given the penalty, prior to that you should have gotten 2 reds and we still would have kicked your ass in the second half. What we did anyway so everything OK!!

    • @chickzidane
      @chickzidane 6 лет назад +3

      Charles Johnson they weren’t red card tackles in the 70s. You had to near enough kill somebody or abuse the ref to get a red. Granted, yoraths tackle was bad but it was a different sport. The ref was suspended after the game because your mob bribed him and it was covered up

    • @TheSm1thers
      @TheSm1thers 5 лет назад +2

      Since VAR didn't exist back then, refs didn't have any way of looking at an incident twice to confirm a decision. That's why so many wrong decisions and robberies have happened in football. People keep saying the ref was bought any time a decision goes against them but refs are always making mistakes. They're only human after all.

      a) the ref didn't call much (most refs didn't)
      b) you could see from the end angle that the trip was on our side of Beckenbauer's body, and the ref was on the far side. So he probably didn't see it, only saw Clarke going too deep then falling over. The linesman was on the far side so wouldn't have seen it either.
      c) even the announcer only noticed it should have been called a foul on the facing end view.

    I've only watched 8mins of this before the Munich player has gone down like he'd been shot, leeds united were too good for them, the German players behaved like they always do, when its not going their way they act up, and the ref should have been ashamed of himself too, this leeds team were way ahead of their time, I'm gutted i didn't get to see revie's team, i know he wasn't in charge in this game, but if it wasn't for him they wouldn't have been playing in this final
