I'd forgotten just how bloody good Leeds were back then ....of course it took a ex Blackpool player as manager to bring the best out of them in Europe !!....respect
Highlights how under rated and unsung Paul Reaney was in that great Leeds side.My guess is that he was first on the team sheet before Bremner Clarke Lorimer Giles et al. Should have been an England regular.
Watch Cruyff try his trademark turn at 7:31 and how Gordon McQueen sticks to him like glue. Cruyff was the greatest of the great, but Gordon McQueen as something special, too.
yes indeed, i was lucky enough to be a regular during the glory years, he took a while to settle in, but in due course became just as effective as Jackie Charlton;.
I totally agree , if Bobby Moore or Beckenbauer [ cheat ] had made that tackle the referee and linesman would have given them a round of applause and asked them for autographs !!
Joe Jordan (10:34) practising his "heading" technique for that infamous penalty awarded to Scotland against Wales in the World Cup qualifying match in 1977!
I wonder why English clubs filled with British players and managed by an English manager was good enough to beat Barcelona and reach a European Cup final back then, but isn't anymore. The best English clubs now have 2 or 3 British players in their side at best and are always managed by a foreigner.
Do you want 50 000 words. Our good guys were poor people all they had was the ball and the dream. Then came video games/ social media and stranger danger. Not allowed and don't want to go out. Got to learn to love the ball.
Reaney was the first non-white player to play for England. History states that it was Viv Anderson, but Reaney was the first. He was of mixed heritage.

What a great Team we had back then we got Robbed in the final should of been Leeds United European champions in 1975 bent Ref cost us big time . Marching on together 🤍💛💙🇮🇨👊🦚
In today's refs eyes there's around 5 red card tackles just in the first 5 minutes between the battling midfielders. How I miss this version of the beautiful game, a tough man's game. And not a single female commentator or lineswoman to see nor heard.
Along with Borussia Mönchengladbach, who were five times Germans champions in the 1970s, reaching five European finals as well, which was more than Leeds on both counts.
@@lyndoncmp5751 Perhaps more than Leeds, but perhaps they didn't suffer some of the travesties of justice Leeds did? 73 ECWC final, 75 EC final, 72 league. I'd also say Bundesliga wasn't as tough as English div 1, fewer games & less competitive. If you were to look at how many high profile games Leeds had to play in EC semi's, Fa cup semi's, sometimes playing 2 games in 2 days you might see how Leeds were treated unfairly. Interestingly Moenchengladbach only reached 1 EC final in 5 attempts, 20% success rate...Leeds 50% success rate. Naturally you are entitled to your opinion, as I am & I stand by my original statement.
Ahh the great days of the European Cup, far more Entertaining than the ugly Bloated Champions league, when teams couldn’t slip up, you had to play your best 11 because the opposition were so good, teams from Eastern Europe were as good as the Germans, Spanish or Italians and English , real football .........
Actually they could sign 5 foreigners. However, 2 or 3 could only be allowed to play. This must have been before that aforementioned rule was in place. This also was after the Spanish League lifted the ban on foreigners. And with Barca, they really capitalised when they signed Cruyff.
This is a very representative game of Cruyff at Barcelona in the period 1975 to 1978: absolutely irrelevant. He was the best player of the world since 1969 to 1974, but he lost all his motivation and love for football after beein defeated by Germany in the World Cup. Just one league and one Spanish Cup as player of Barcelona (73/74-77/78).
I agree. As good as any I've seen between the years you describe. And the German defeat probably had a lot to do with his motivation falling. Also, maybe the years of chain smoking did catch up with him. However, I think Cruyff, when compared with other great players, should be from his Ajax days and the Dutch national team up to end of world cup 74. In that time he was an absolute electric presence on a football field, and he had some fine players, at their peak, around him. The Barcalona team he played in was I think a very ordinary side. These days, they can go around the world hand picking who they want to play for them. Mind you, he did wipe the floor with England in a friendly game in 77.
Abolutely agree with you, Michael. His best time was with Ajax and Dutch team since 1968 to 1974. But when he was playing for Barcelona not Real Madrid nor Atlético de Madrid had great teams, neither. And it was just one league for a player of his level. After the 0-5 defeat at Bernabeu, many madridistas thought that Barcelona had another Di Stefano, but time proved to be a mistake. Cruyff was one of the five greatest, but it is Messi who has emerged as the Di Stefano of Barcelona: his best player ever. Saludos desde España
Well, I will repeat, Cruyff in those 5-6 years was as good as 'Anyone', in the history of the game. But the players Messi has had around him in all of his playing career at Barcelona, has helped Messi a great deal. Let's face it, if Cruyff had stayed at Ajax, they, not B Munich, would in all probability won the Euro cup 3 more times. If Messi moved from Barcelona and went say to an English team such as let's say, Everton, made them in his first season the champions, at the same time as defeating say Manchester United 0-5 on their own ground, and then in the following season take them to a very closely contested semi final defeat in the Euro Champions cup, then I might regard him as being up there with Cruyff. The bold risk Cruyff took to move from strongest team in world football in 73 to a mediocre Spanish team, nobody these days would contemplate such a move. Messi might move to England, but it'll be to Manchester City millionaires not Everton. He hasn't got the guts. And one other thing people forget besides being much more fitness aware these days, is some of the slogging pitches the likes of Cruyff had to play on. They play on snooker tables by comparison these days.
Now I dissagree. If you think that Barcelona in the 70s was a mediocre team, then also were mediocre Real Madrid and Atlético in those days. Not the best decade in spanish football at all, but not an irrelevant one: remember that Real Madrid played the semifinals of Champions League in 1973 & 1976, Atlético played the final in 1974 against Bayern, and Barça the semifinal against Leeds in 1975. And I am not talking about Cup of winners cup and UEFA cup.... It would have been almost a miracle to win the European Cup with Barça in 1975 or 1977, as it would have been for Real at the same period, when german and english teams dominated european football. Nevertheless, Barcelona was not Everton or something like that, but a club that was great in the past (50s) and have a terrible sporting crisis for 15 years (since the defeat against Benfica in Berna final, 1961). That Barcelona in 1973-1977 was not the Napoli in which played Maradona since 1984 to 1987, by the way, but a much better club with some great players (Rexach, Neeskens and Sotil, for instance) as teammates for Johan. And one more thing: Di Stéfano arrived to Spain in 1953 to a club that, comparatevely, was much worst than Barça in 1973, and after 11 years that club won 5 champions leagues and 8 ligas, changing forever the history of football. He did that competing with Barça, Bilbao and Atlético, which were a much stronger oposition for Real in those days that it was for Cruyff Real and Atletico in the 70s. Cruyff is a legend, but he lost his motivation and passion for football after the defeat against Germany in 1974. Sorry for my bad english. Saludos
I know the comment is very old here, but it's interesting and if somebody could solve this it would be good: Heredia, born argentinian, was nationalised spanish... so, there you got 3 foreigners, Cruyff and Neeskens, dutch, and Marinho brazilian. Maybe it were 3 foreigners allowed and not 2 Someone knows?
Gotta love Dave Coleman's commentary..The master of emphasis, one-liners and at key moments total silence..A real one-off!

There is a them football pitches in Apperley Lane at the bottom of my old school in the grounds were Bradford City sometimes train.
That stayed at what was The Baron of Beef, Highfield Road in Bradford. We waited outside and Neeskens came out and chatted to us for fifteen minutes or so.
I'd forgotten just how bloody good Leeds were back then ....of course it took a ex Blackpool player as manager to bring the best out of them in Europe !!....respect
Very very good manager ❤
Highlights how under rated and unsung Paul Reaney was in that great Leeds side.My guess is that he was first on the team sheet before Bremner Clarke Lorimer Giles et al. Should have been an England regular.
British players playing for a great British club..... whats happened to British clubs since those great days. Some childhood heroes on that pitch.
More brilliant commentary from the master David Coleman.
That was football, rugby, & boxing all in one…. Great game
excellent observation!
That was a great tackle by Reaney that lead to the 1-1 free kick. Terrible refereeing even back then
I totally agree , if Bobby Moore or Beckenbauer [ cheat ] had made that tackle the referee and linesman would have given them a round of applause and asked them for autographs !!
Can you imagine if Eddie Gray wasn't so injury prone?
He would have been a world beater.
Joe Jordan (10:34) practising his "heading" technique for that infamous penalty awarded to Scotland against Wales in the World Cup qualifying match in 1977!
Before Liverpool claimed it as their own after Heysel/Hillsborough - every team ( inc Man United ) used to sing it !
Great team back then Leeds as a villa fan cruyff the best player I ever saw live.
Alan Partdge's commentary is excellent.
Thanks Guillermos! Didn't think he'd have turned out for Barca somehow :)
I wonder why English clubs filled with British players and managed by an English manager was good enough to beat Barcelona and reach a European Cup final back then, but isn't anymore. The best English clubs now have 2 or 3 British players in their side at best and are always managed by a foreigner.
England doesn't even have a lot of quality players, and every big European club nowadays is mostly foreigners.
Because Barca then were nowhere near as good as Barca now. Nationality has nothing to do with skill.
Do you want 50 000 words. Our good guys were poor people all they had was the ball and the dream. Then came video games/ social media and stranger danger. Not allowed and don't want to go out. Got to learn to love the ball.
its not about the sport anymore. football is used for business and propaganda these days. sad but true
One of the best British/Irish sides ever. Would give any team a really good game. Just a freak coming together.
Leeds were great that night. Was stood in the corner of Lowfields Road and Elland road.
I was at this match, stood in the Lowfields Road stand, think it was a monday evening.
At Elland Road " Cattenatcio" is what we saw, the mighty came the mighty fell ,including Charlton, Best and Law. (Nothing To ADD)
the trio of manchester united
DCs commentary; poetry with a nutmeg🕺
Nutmeg? wtf?
Reaney was the first non-white player to play for England. History states that it was Viv Anderson, but Reaney was the first. He was of mixed heritage.
I had forgotten that Revie had already gone. Great leadership shown by Jimmy Armfield
Has anyone ever noticed that no one...but no one in any of these old clips from the 70's could sew on the number 11 straight?. It is wonky every time..lol..
Wasn't a patch on Billy that night! Superb memories!
Thanks-much appreciated :)
THERES ONLY 1 TEAM IN THIS WORLD 2 SUPPORT AND THATS THE MIGHTY LEEDS UNITED WE ALL LOVE LEEDS WE ALL L;OVE LEEDS
Michels, Cruyff, Neeskens made a football machine of Ajax, but could not do that to Barca in 1975-1978. That happened 15 years later.
13:30 The way Bremner confronts the Barcelona Goalie ! :)
43 years ago today, my Dad was there. Leeds the best team never to win the European cup.
I think it was Tony Book, Man City captain, that said Leeds were the best team in Europe during the 70s, for some 5 years!
leeds got robbed and cheated by the ref in the final against bayern munich in paris
Along with Borussia Mönchengladbach, who were five times Germans champions in the 1970s, reaching five European finals as well, which was more than Leeds on both counts.
Peter Day,
They were not better than Liverpool, Ajax, Bayern and Monchengladbach.
Naturally you are entitled to your opinion, as I am & I stand by my original statement.
what he said was Leeds was the best team back then but got cheated out of many cups because of the referees.
Imagine today's bunch of prima donnas facing some of this tackling. Marinho able to give it with the Leeds lads.
All of Leeds goals in both legs were made by the renowned and feared aerial power of Joe Jordan!
Ahh the great days of the European Cup, far more Entertaining than the ugly Bloated Champions league, when teams couldn’t slip up, you had to play your best 11 because the opposition were so good, teams from Eastern Europe were as good as the Germans, Spanish or Italians and English , real football .........
European Cup for CHAMPIONS ONLY !
1 nil!! classic Coleman
Rexach actually managed Barca for a bit and was at the helm when Barcelona beat Liverpool 3-1 at Anfield in 2001
At 23.42, the LEEDS fans signing my teams National Anthem YNWA vs BARCELONA is amazing. ..... brings back good memories |
Marinho---Mario Peres Ulibarri is his name. Was in the World Cup the previous year captaining Brasil.
Actually they could sign 5 foreigners. However, 2 or 3 could only be allowed to play. This must have been before that aforementioned rule was in place. This also was after the Spanish League lifted the ban on foreigners. And with Barca, they really capitalised when they signed Cruyff.
Leeds united,of the U K, verses the current best club team on the planet, but back then, Leeds were robbed blind.
50/50 ball,nearly took keeper's head off.😂😂😂.
Saludos
Carlos Simancas also 1 european cup in 1978 I think 🤔 ⚽️, Cruyff was better as a coach than as a player for Barcelona ⚽️
Pull in Kenny from Liverpool and you've got most of the Scottish International team (excluding Alan Rough the trainee goalie)
my first game i watched on tv aged 7 .ref was a cheat been paid off by barcelona///still back in prem next year give man utd a good kicking boys
LEEDS UNITED ETAIT UNE DES MEILLEURS EQUIPES AU MONDE A CETTE EPOQUE ET ILS ONT MANQUE DE CHANCE ET SURTOUT VOLE PAR LES ARBITRES
Shame no replays of certain moments or goals.
Would be interesting to know when TV replays first happened in football
My home town club against the greatest of all time and all time favourite player Johan Cruyff
Barca have 2 Dutchmen, 1 Brazilian and 1 Argentinian in this line-up. I thought back in those days teams were only allowed 2 foreigners.
I know the comment is very old here, but it's interesting and if somebody could solve this it would be good:
Heredia, born argentinian, was nationalised spanish... so, there you got 3 foreigners, Cruyff and Neeskens, dutch, and Marinho brazilian. Maybe it were 3 foreigners allowed and not 2
Someone knows?
Wow, Barca's home kits from the 70s look really blue. Not much red at all on that kit, thought it was a Chelsea kit from the thumbnail!
Ah yes tackling..........I remember that!
