You can skip the boss if you want to during exploring the third level, but it wants you to still beat it to get to the final level, the same with the crystal caves boss and the castle boss.
My sister and I had a tough time on this one, because of the last part... But we eventually got it. The dragon and the fake K Rool boss had us mad for days though. >_> I eventually beat the latter by myself, but then DK64 showed us the lovely "YOU NEED TO BEAT THE ORIGINAL DONKEY KOND TO PASS" thing...
This guy was definitely a big step up in difficulty from the first two bosses, I think I had more trouble with this one than any others in the game lol.
quaz450 Must Agree, Puffer fish thing and Mad Jack were the hardest bosses I faces "AS A KID", now They both are a joke of course, but still, the memory remains.... and Oh, damn you jack... DAMN YOU
Hydroxoid As a kid, this one was easy. Tedious, but I didn't have too much of a problem beating him. Actually, he's one of my favorites. The one that I had serious trouble with was the Dogodon in the Fungi Forest boss rom. He made me his bitch for over a year before I figured out how to beat him (throwing Chunky's Heavy bunch a million times? How come I didn't think of that sooner?). After that the rest of the bosses were easy (puffer fish aside, but at least I didn't have a time limit like the Fungi Forest).

This boss and Bowser's laugh from Mario 64 when you tried to open a locked door were basically the two most terrifying things I experienced in my entire childhood.

The biggest thing i can think of is the terrible banana collecting system. having to revisist the same place multiple times for absolutely no good reason made the game tedious. The lighthouse level was also shite.
