A painter (artist) first, she taught herself to play baritone ukulele in her late teens for fun, didn't start performing music until she was in art school sort of by accident. She'd had about a year of piano lessons as a young child (age 7 or 8 maybe) but didn't touch piano again after that until her early 20's. She became a very accomplished and creative guitar player, mountain dulcimer player, piano player, as well as vocalist, and her songwriting (music and lyrics) were amazing! She painted the covers of several of her albums, she produced her own music/albums starting with her 2nd album, and was always willing to try different things even if it meant a huge loss in popularity/album sales, as she was always about the artistry/creativity of the music, NOT about "creating hits". BTW, she was stricken with polio as a child and was hospitalized and not expected to walk again, but she didn't give up, and shocked everyone by learning to walk again! In her youth, she developed a huge love of dancing.. the popular dances of the time, which helped her develop a great sense and feel for rhythm. In 2015 she was stricken with a brain aneurysm and wasn't expected to survive. She DID survive, but she had to re-learn to do everything. She taught herself to sing again, and even taught herself to play a bit of guitar again over the past couple of years. At age 80, she finally had the opportunity to perform at the Grammys in 2024. What she's lost in vocal range over the years, and lingering affects from the brain aneurysm and brain surgery, she's made up for with creative arrangements and expressiveness in her singing.
Such a gorgeous sad song. Joni Mitchell is Canadian and this song is about her breakup with Graham Nash of Crosby Stills Nash and Young. Laurel Canyon, California was a hot spot for music talent to go to back in the 60's. This is where she was at the time. A case of you is another beautiful song by her.
Joni is super gifted. I just love her beautiful, unique voice. "Help Me" is a favorite of mine!!!!
