It's that combination of garage rock energy with very catchy melodies, and chord progressions. It's a very appealing recipe. BTW, anyone who likes this kind of stuff, I'd recommend listening to songs like "German Song" and "Mercury Falling" by the band Come. It's garage rock with semi-prog type movements and scale, really well done.
In an interview the singer said he was inspired by the movie "Enemy at the gates" where two opposing snipers were waiting for each other to make the first move and open themselves to be "Taken out" and how it was like two people in a nightclub doing the same.
I had no idea about the interview until your post, but I sort of understood it to be a pun of sorts, like a double meaning and sort of commentary on that aggressive meaning of being taken out, or taken out of one's misery, combined and contrasted with the more literal meaning she cited in the video. You can kinda just hear it, no? It's not (only) a sweet comment on wanting to be taken out. I would sort of disagree with what she said toward the end (though I'm taking it out of context): there is pain in hoping and wishing. It's interesting to watch how she and others apprehend and appreciate a groove, too, because in this case (and some others, like NIN's Closer, which she seemed to hate) that winds up being the main point of the song. That's a big part of how I understood the sort of 'take me out' double meaning that the interview confirms. By definition, I think a groove (which exists in classical music too, it's just different in some lived cultural sense) is going to be repetitive and therefore boring, in a sense, so that there can be a pulse that you at least think about moving with it in a certain way. Anyway, something about the sort of reckless abandon of garage rock with the angular groove of it makes it clear there is a darker side to the whole thing.
One of my favorite things about this song is the double entendre of breaking the ice, of being vulnerable when “shooting one’s shot,” and knowing that failure is (a kind of) death. The sniper duel metaphor is so artfully done and beautifully articulated without seeming juvenile, Kapranos really did some of his best lyrical work on this track.
Fun Fact: The guitarist Nick McCarthy grew up out of Rosenheim in Bavaria and studied classical double-bass at the Richard-Strauss-Konservatorium in Munich.
Back when this song came out I thought it was two different songs. I didn't care for the first part, so I'd change the station. Then other times catch it at the second part and think it was great, not realizing it was the same song.
One of my favourite songs from 2004. I like how the tempo changes and this brings to mind, Wake Up by Arcade Fire, which I hope will be, or has been heard.
I remember performing this song when I was going to music college. The counterpoint melody lines between the two guitars make it sound very interesting and melodically wouldn’t work unless they are both playing their individual parts.
This was my tuna song. At the end of a day offshore, if I caught fish and when all lines were in, I'd jam this song as I made turns for home. Those were good years, so long ago now.
FF is great music for clubbing. That is why I have them on my shelf. At 60+ it is hard to convince yourself that you could go, so at least you can play clubbing music at home.😢🙂
@@tonyattardo9350 Thank you! I do go to concerts and jazz clubs and such, but I'm afraid that in dance clubs they play music that I would not like. I always loved this song. I feel like I never heard anything else quite like it on the radio. Listening to it does trigger my brain to recall another song that was on the radio around that time that I also loved and that I felt was also somewhat unique, though not quite as unique. I would love it if you could listen to The Middle by Jimmy Eat World someday. I love the story behind The Middle: the band was turned down for a record deal, wrote the song to cheer themselves up, and the song got them a record deal.
This song was HUGE in 2004-2005. I was a bit of a snob musically then (around high school), and didn't really like it. In retrospect, it's so much fun despite, as you say, the lyrics being about something not terrible, but not great. It's danceable, the structure of the song is more inventive than many rock songs of its era, and the electric guitars and melodic lines really pop.
Wow! I had to think of these guys' debut album while on the loo only yesterday (which 'Take Me Out' is from), and now here they are again! 😀 And I too had noticed a while ago that 'NME' sounds like 'enemy'. And I don't believe in coincidences! 😆
Seriously, though, the main beat is a "walking rock," kind of structure. Maybe more strutting than walking, or a walking in high heals pace. Something about you listing to this song makes me wonder how you'd enjoy the song, "60 feet tall," by The Dead weather. It has a similar walking pace but one more like that of a giant's. =)
This era was the last hurrah (but I hope I'm wrong) of great rock with chart success and wide appeal. It's best heard live, I reckon. Still, we have KGLW and Osees to enjoy...

We tend to look at the music of our youth through rose-tinted glasses but when I look back at the guitar music of the UK in the 90's I don't think I appreciated how creative it was. There was an optimism in British music that seemed to dissipate in later decades.
"Take me out" can mean either taking someone on a date or killing them, and both are possible because being a "crosshair" (shooting someone with a sniper rifle while looking through the crosshairs) and "a shot" (shooting someone, or drinking a shot with them) away both fit thematically. It's either about a date or an assassination. It's also a reference to taking someone out of their misery; as in, tell me one way or the other so I'm not just sitting here waiting.
References to crosshairs and shooting make you question the intended meaning of the refrain, 'Take me out'. In its raw state it refers to 'a date' [love], but adorned with the imagery of conflict it can take on a more deadly meaning [assassination]. They do say that all is fair in love and war... Very catchy song.
The way the song starts it's almost like his girlfriend/crush just walked out on him and he suddenly felt he had to run after her. Then he catches up with her and slows down to match her pace, then the actual song properly starts.
