The amazing Bog Dog has done it again! Odysseus’s motif may not be as ever present as the danger motif, but it’s definitely just as sneaky! 5/5 villain monologues for you Bog!
As someone who has trouble hearing the motifs sometimes, this is SUPER helpful! Not only the analysis of when /how the motif is used, but also showing the notes onscreen!
Jorge talks about this in his misheard lyrics videos, but Athena actually says "Well done, ENLIGHTEN me, what's your name". I love these kinds of videos when it comes to EPIC, and hands down this is the best, and most complete one I've seen. Well done!
i do know that it's "enlighten me, what's your name", but i just thought it would be funnier and more thematic to write "you've lied to me" lol. thank you for your support!
I absolutely love how in depth these explanations are for how the motif sounds and how it's used in scenes, it's absolutely incredible how you find all these and manage to pick them apart to find the meanings
I find Odysseus’ motif very interesting, because it can be very well hidden in songs, it’s very clever as it’s not right in your face and but you can still hear it if you listen very closely!
Found this after waking up, this is the most delicious breakfast I've ever had in my life. For someone who loves the application of motifs so much, I know next to nothing about them, so the way this was formatted and shown was EXTREMELY helpful and pleasant to go through. Thank you!
THIS IS AN AWESOME ANALYSIS I LOVE HOW YOUR MIND WORKS i hadn’t thought about any of this. i especially love the thing about his thought’s speeding up you can literally HEAR IT in the motif that’s so fucking cool
🥰 thank you! I will no longer be going "what part of the song are you talking about?" when ppl mention Odysseus' cunning motif, I can at least pretend to know what they are talking about. I rly appreciate this (:
Love how in "Puppeteer" when Odysseus melody is done there is also Hermes melody to say that he is watching him while he explain his plan; as tricjsyer listening to the trick of a mortal, quite funnt when you think😂
Whattt nah, I totally did not already watched the first video, and getting confused now. Nope, no sir hahahaha. Regardless, thanks for all your work! Love your videos highlighting these because personally I never would've noticed there's so many occurrences of the motifs. Thank you! Also it's fine to make a mistake here and there
Great job, I thoroughly enjoy music analysis videos, let alone it being from Epic! I believe though you should have included Odysseus's mother motif from the Underworld as Jorge confirmed it being, Odysseus's motif in a major key playing on piano!
i just re-listened to the troy saga and have an addition to make to this list: just a man. you can hear a softer version of odysseus' motif playing on a high-pitched acoustic guitar (most clearly heard at 0:11 and 0:36, although you can hear it playing in the background during other timestamps) in the song. it was super hard to catch seeing as it took me a literal year to notice, but if you listen really closely, you can hear it. i think that it's meant to represent a 'softer' version of odysseus thinking, if that makes sense. it's not quick and cunning battle strategy, but the careful consideration of what to do with the child's life now in his hands. his emotions/sense of empathy are even more involved here because he's reminded of telemachus. odysseus also has to grapple with the fact that whatever he does here decides both the fates of his kid and wife, whom he explicitly stated were his main motivation to keep going. anyways 10/10 video, thank you bog dog 🧎
thank you so much for your videos, i can't imagine how hard it must be to make them! I love music and I'm OBSESSED with this musical, so your videos analyzing little details are so interesting! Also, Jorge is soo good at hiding bits of foreshadowing and info in his songs!!
the fact that I was just listening to EPIC and tried to analyze the instrumentals myself (inspired by you btw :D) and the most I've noticed are odysseus' motifs !!!! then you uploaded this (ignoring that this is a reupload lmao), what a timing!
This is so good!! I love analysis videos like this because I find it hard to pick out the motifs myself but once I know it's there I can recognise it. This is so cool!
“now he’s home free” HM… i love how you switch between “this could represent ____” and “he didn’t think this through NEARLY enough” absolutely shitting on ody
oh man this is awesome, i always thought about where i could hear these motifs! i would really appreciate a video on athena's motif just to prove to myself that her motif is at the start of thunder bringer and i am not in fact going insane :)
I'm surprised that it doesn't play anywhere in Scylla, seeing as he tricks Eurylochus into giving out the torches and choosing which crew members to sacrifice to Scylla. Or during the second half of Mutiny, since he was secretly untying himself the whole time.
OMG, I love your videos. I love epic and I love these little Easter eggs (if you want to call them that) like this, but sadly I am not that good at hearing stuff like this out of the songs. thank you so much. I hope you keep making videos about the other sagas when they come out
01:34 "Lied" 😂 Oh how I love when humor is put into videos ☺ 01:50 Right when I mention I love humor🤣 "Never mind "Home free" I guess" I'm having so much fun watching this video!!! 😂😂😂 03:50 It was loud but I forgive you ❤ Btw. really well put together video you have made 👍 New format? Didn't notice? Whats new? Btw. I would like to note that I'm here (for this video, I saw the other one on my own accord) because Motius called you out! So congrats on that! Also... Why Bog Dog???
I just noticed that there’s also an Odysseus motif behind his mother in The Underworld in light piano. Incredible video, I wouldn’t have noticed it otherwise! ❤
I love to consume all epic so i throughly enjoy your videos! Love the disses to ody cause for one so cunning he can be such an idiot sometimes haha 😂 love this format and excited to see whats in store! ❤
I imagine the messy motif in No Longer You is actually present Odysseus trying and struggling to comprehend what he's being told. Prophecies are cryptic, and the poor man just wants to figure out a way home!
In the newly released Wisdom saga, Oys motif plays again, and I wouldn't mind an explanation as to why. Big Spoilers for Love in Paradise! In Love in Paradise, at the "Ledge" scene, odys motif plays softly on the nylon string guitar (with Danger motif being the "choir" in the background) In this scene, Ody plans to kill himself by throwing himself off a Ledge (hence danger making sense), but why does his cunning motif play? It's one of his softer moments since "becoming a monster" and later on he's not meant to have a Nylon String guitar in his arsenal anymore to symbolise his loss of humanity, so I'm assuming it's still played in the nylon guitar because he's still human at this point. But why does his motif play? He's not being cunning or a trickster. He's just giving up. What I'm asking is, are there other reasons his motif would play aside from being cunning?
In the new saga on the song "love in paradise" during the scene where odysseus is on the cliff i think i heard it but im not able to distinguish it enough to be certain its that or some other leitmotif
I think the reason that Ody's motif is scrambled in No Longer You is because even though it sounds like one of the suitors, the man that makes it home is still him
I like to think that the one at the start of Polyphemus is Odysseus coming inside the cave after shooting the sheep and was like "Hold on. Something ain't right."
What about the piano bit right before Anticlea starts singing in The Underworld? Is that meant to represent Ody's motif as well as to represent her connection/relation to Odysseus?
Hey, do you know what the motif that Penelope sings at the end is? You hear the crew sing it after Odysseus shouts his name at the Cyclops and other points in the musical; did Jay ever say what that one was?
_Technically,_ Jorge himself refers to it as “Odysseus’s mom’s melodic motif” and a variation of Odysseus’s motif, not actually Odysseus’s motif. It’s confusing, I know.
I believe you’re making the music sheets by hear, which-is-very-cool-and-I-wish-I-could-do-the-same-TwT Would you mind sharing them ? Even through patreon or other platforms 👉👈
@ScareFire thank you for the comment! unfortunately, there's multiple reasons I can't do this. 1. i don't make full sheet music transcriptions because they take too much time; meaning i basically just have 20 second clips of each song laying around rather than full sheet music for each. 2. i only transcribe the part of the music relevant to the video, so in this case ive ONLY transcribed odysseus' motif for many of these songs. 3. if I were to share full versions of the sheet music (which I don't even have in the first place) id be breaking copyright laws and id probably get sued by jorge's company, which i absolutely do not want! what im saying here is, thank you for the praise, but i really can't do that. im glad that you appreciate the effort!
"Now there's absolutely no way the cyclops can know his name" is CRAZY XD
The amazing Bog Dog has done it again! Odysseus’s motif may not be as ever present as the danger motif, but it’s definitely just as sneaky! 5/5 villain monologues for you Bog!
love the absolute vicious roasting of Odysseus in between in the insightful analysis XD
@sora9138 thank you, i try my best ✨️
"Well done, enlighten me"
I don’t know if this comes up but it’s super neat how Odysseus’s motif *alludes to* the Danger motif because Odysseus was the real danger all along.
Since the second half of the motif has the same notes as the danger motif it could show that Odysseus is dangerous with his plans
So you could say he's a bit *dangerous* , my friend?
@@LeahCantDraw had a mindset change for this?
@@Hotshot_Thomassince he cannot get away with playing safe for this
@@Dishitakuritisince he has to get home, he has to put it all on the line
@I_love_food101 he has to put his whole brain in this, remember every trick in his domain for this
As someone who has trouble hearing the motifs sometimes, this is SUPER helpful! Not only the analysis of when /how the motif is used, but also showing the notes onscreen!
If you saw the first version, no you didn't.
-- Bog and the other people behind this vid
first version? what first version? it's always been this lone version that was just uploaded, yup.
Shhhhh 🤫🤣
There is no reupload in Ba Sing Se
If you saw Bog doing a thumbs up no you didn’t

Wow it’s even better the second time!
shhhhhh you saw nothing........
God I love how you interpreted all the differant ways the motif is played, also shows Jorges genius in a way (yes I'm obsessed)
I absolutely love how in depth these explanations are for how the motif sounds and how it's used in scenes, it's absolutely incredible how you find all these and manage to pick them apart to find the meanings
This stuff is mind-bogglingly confusing to me as a non-musician but it's still so amazing
I find Odysseus’ motif very interesting, because it can be very well hidden in songs, it’s very clever as it’s not right in your face and but you can still hear it if you listen very closely!
I’m glad you pointed out that his motif has the notes of the danger motif cause I’ve heard that a few times but wasn’t quite sure what it was
Found this after waking up, this is the most delicious breakfast I've ever had in my life. For someone who loves the application of motifs so much, I know next to nothing about them, so the way this was formatted and shown was EXTREMELY helpful and pleasant to go through. Thank you!

I love that you point out the small variations in the motifs and the possible reasons for it! Great videos, I’ll be watching them on repeat lol
You epic mad lad!! You did it again! I've been following the progression of this one less closely, but its still been fun to see you working on it!
I'm surprised that it doesn't play anywhere in Scylla, seeing as he tricks Eurylochus into giving out the torches and choosing which crew members to sacrifice to Scylla. Or during the second half of Mutiny, since he was secretly untying himself the whole time.
It does, actually! Yk the drums that play his motif in Different Beast? They play the second half of it while she's attacking the crew!
yo this is so intresting and thank you so much for putting it out. see you on the other side of the wisdom saga!
OMG, I love your videos. I love epic and I love these little Easter eggs (if you want to call them that) like this, but sadly I am not that good at hearing stuff like this out of the songs. thank you so much. I hope you keep making videos about the other sagas when they come out

What I'm asking is, are there other reasons his motif would play aside from being cunning?
you missed one from monster when ody says "SO WHAT IF IM THE MONSTER" just like in remember them half of his motif is played
It's now in 600 Strike!
In the new saga on the song "love in paradise" during the scene where odysseus is on the cliff i think i heard it but im not able to distinguish it enough to be certain its that or some other leitmotif
The fact that Odysseus' motif and the Danger motif being similar is definitely gonna do something especially in like Song 38
I think the reason that Ody's motif is scrambled in No Longer You is because even though it sounds like one of the suitors, the man that makes it home is still him
I'd love to see a man-monster theme analysis from you!
I like to think that the one at the start of Polyphemus is Odysseus coming inside the cave after shooting the sheep and was like "Hold on. Something ain't right."
And at the beginning of that one cut calypso song!
WELL DONE YA LIED TO ME WHATS YOUR NAME
Wisdom saga when? 🙃🥲😔😞😄
Could ya do a "just a man" motif in every song?
I am in love with you Bogathus Dogathus 💘💘
Also: I think the Odysseus motif is in The Underworld during Odysseus' solo to Anticlea
It's "Well done, enlighten me" not "you've lied to me"
Odysseus' motif being so close to the danger motif is wild, though. I wonder if it was intentional.
What about the piano bit right before Anticlea starts singing in The Underworld? Is that meant to represent Ody's motif as well as to represent her connection/relation to Odysseus?
Could you do the "When does-" motif? Like the "When does a man become a monster" and the other lines with it?
Hey, do you know what the motif that Penelope sings at the end is? You hear the crew sing it after Odysseus shouts his name at the Cyclops and other points in the musical; did Jay ever say what that one was?
Isn't his sung in monster? "all I hear are screams..."
Has no one noticed Odysseus’ mom uses his motif???
_Technically,_ Jorge himself refers to it as “Odysseus’s mom’s melodic motif” and a variation of Odysseus’s motif, not actually Odysseus’s motif. It’s confusing, I know.
do u plan to do another for the newer sagas?

Moar motigs
Wait. Didn't the Odysseus melody play when his mom was singing?
Dang I found some of these but not all of them. How did you get the sheet music?
can I have the link to the discord?
It’s not “you lied to me,” it’s “enlighten me”
Just wanted to clarify
@Master-jo1hd im aware! that was just a joke for the sake of the video lmao
