I just watched the Season 5 finale, and it is brilliant to me how this series has changed over time. Each season has its own unique charm, but season 1 has it in almost every scene. I’m not going to claim season 5 is the best season, but it has something for everyone. Let’s look forward to the film.
Leofrichs death is realistic. The best marine I ever knew was killed by a stray bullet that wasn't even aimed. It happens that way sometimes. Not every hero gets a glorious death. It also pains Utred. This battle was hell for him in a lot of ways. Juxtaposed against Alfreds elation throughout the battle. Utreds loss is Alfred's gain.
i also loved how they utilised the shield walls on both sides instead of it just starting out as two sides just mindlessly charging each other and slaughtering each other they both used actual tactics and it only devolved into mindless hack in slash when the dane line was broken.
@@michaelkean5969 yeah, this episode had it all and solidified this show as one of my favorites. The show definitely takes liberties which is fine, but they do justice to our history. It's not about slaughter of Vikings or religious wars. It's just people on all sides doing their best for what they believe in.
@@blakec8549 that is another thing i love about the last kingdom over vikings is how it show cases a way more accurate history and shows that it was no where close to being as one sided as vikings depicted saxons vs vikings was. Vikings made Saxons a joke whereas the last kingdom actually respects both breeds of warrior yet at the same time pointing out the flaws of both sides. not to mention some of the shows best fighters aren't even danes. the show highlights how the Saxons utilised their home field advantage and knowledge of their territory and when the saxons do this the danes literally crumble and are close to defenceless against them while at the same time the Danes can gain the upper hand with their ships by constantly flanking around the saxons.
@@michaelkean5969 history likes to forget that Saxons and Danes are pretty much the same people, only really removed by about 400 years. Even though their language was different it was close enough that you could have a pretty good idea what was being said. Some of the Saxons also held on to their pagan traditions(even kid utred asked about wodan) so they wouldn't have seemed as wild and foreign to the Saxons as most media claims. After all, you can to read king Alfred's genealogy that he wrote for himself and he claims Odin as an ancestor to legitimize his reign over his pagan peasants. TV rarely respects history AND provides quality entertainment at the same time.
I absolutely love the way Aethalwald is portrayed. Harry McEntire does such a good job of painting him as this ambitious little weasel (in the best possible way!) that feels constantly slighted because the crown was passed over him. Can't help but find him hilarious. Chews up every scene.
Uhtred and Beocca have such a wonderful relationship. The novels that the show is based off of (The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell) is a very well-written series, which shines through in the show as well.
Beocca is very much THE father figure for Uhtred in both the shows and the books and he does take up somewhat of a grandfather figure role towards Uhtred's Son aswell even if it is brief.
Cornwell is most famous for another book series, the "Sharpe" novels about a soldier in the Napoleonic Wars. Those books were also adapted into an excellent TV series starring Sean Bean.
Leofric had everything you needed from a lieutenant. He was brave, clever, loyal, wasn't scared of telling the truth if needed, he had strenght, high combat skills, strategic knowledge, experience, a great sense of humor, and autority. He was Uthred's first and best saxon friend, alongside Beoca, he learnt a lot from him and we missed him for the rest of the show. He won't be forgotten, neither him or the characters that were his successors, but it's up to you to discover them by keep watching. Thank you both for this reaction in particular, hope you get through every season as passionned as I was when watching for the first time.
Leofrich dying in the shield wall is incredibly significant in the books Cornwell stresses how even the greatest warriors could easily die in the claustrophobic nightmare of a shield wall surrounded by thrusting blades Utred has to face absolute bowel loosening terror every time he goes into battle.
The relationship between Uhtred and Alfred is one my favorites in all of television. It's so complex and nuanced, and David Dawson's performance as Alfred is stunning throughout. It will infuriate you at times, inspire you at others, and break your heart in between.
Really trying not to commit spoiler - but I was fully invested in their relationship right up to date, especially their most recent scene. Just, incredible. David Dawson is a spectacular actor.
In this episode, we see the Battle of Edington or Egbert's stone. This was a real battle that took place according to scholar Bishop Asser. That is correct, Asser in this story was a real person. The author put Asser and other monks recording history for Alfred at odds with Uhtred to explain why his fictional character Uhtred is not mentioned in history. In the writings of Asser, Leofrich Uhtred's friend who died, sacrificed himself to break the shield wall of the Danes that lead to the Danes defeat. Leofrich also killed the sword Dane Skorpa before he was killed. That is correct, Skorpa was a real person too.
@@jostnaleman3738 I don't remember. I will have to read the Cornwell book about the battle again. I do remember it was Steapa who dueled Uhtred before the fall of Winchester and not Leofrich in the books. What I was writing about was the priest Asser's historical writings from the late 800's and not Cromwell's books the show is based on. Cromwell did massive research to write his books which he talks about at the end of everyone of his books. When this books series first came out about 17 years ago they used to have a website linking the research you could read for yourself. After the 6th or 7th book came out around 2014, I couldn't find the website anymore. Most of what I am talking about is what I can recall from my crappy memory.
The Battle of Edington ended the conquests of the Great Heathern Army. Though later my nation, England, would later be ruled by Danes, and remained that way until 1066. These men were Christians.
This was such a freaking fantastic season finale!! I was blown away! And yes, the storytelling is phenomenal. The acting, the music is so kick-ass, the casting- I have no words!
I seriously love rewatching this with you guys because you have a true appreciation for the time period and story. I have rewatched this show so many times, but it’s fun to see through fresh eyes ( first timers) I can’t wait for the next season.
Egbert’s stone is in fact named after the character you know from vikings. Both vikings and TLK have egbert (aka ecbert) being alfred’s grandfather as it was in real life (despite alfred in vikings being the son of athelstan)
One of the Top 10 most undertated shows ever.Thank you guys for recognising this gem guys loved your reaction. And yeah controvetsial opinion i think this show is more layered and better than vikings.
yeh, vikings had so much potential. the groundwork was all set. they wasted alot of time in s3 with wessex and i found athelstan incredibly irritating, then they added judith. torvi, yidu..and then they added margeret. lagertha became really weird. the never ending story of torvi. the dead iceland story. it became awful.
@@mijanhoque1740 yeah and unlike game of thrones it doesn't get bogged down by characters having a contrived lack of common sense to drive plot forward. every character in TLK is flawed like GOT sure but they are also way smarter than every character in GOT. this show did a far better job at making characters flawed yet smart. GOT and vikings utterly failed in this regard. vikings and GOT told us but it didn't show us. TLK both tells us and shows us that Uhtred is a battle hardened badass and Alfred is a genius who earned the title of "The Great".
In the books to save Edward Alfred's son from sickness, she had to sacrifice another child. She did not know until it happened, but the child that was randomly sacrificed was Uhtred's son. After the ritual was done, she knew Uhtred's son had died. That is why she is sad. According to the book, she could not tell Uhtred or the spell would be broken. And then Alfred's son would die too.
Fun fact: Father Beocca's actor also played Professor Quirrell (the guy who had Voldemort's face on the back of his head during the first Harry Potter movie).
I cried when Leofric died, I adored him... I have to say, I loved vikings, and while TLK doesnt have the episodes in compare, I find it to be right up there with Vikings, because of the storytelling, and the characters, it is just awesomeness. I cant choose one:) so much looking forward to the next episode...and the rest:) Love that you are enjoying it so much
This series mostly shows Alfred as a warrior king, but Alfred also had a reputation as a learned man who encouraged education, translated books himself, proposing that primary education be conducted in English, rather than Latin, and improving the legal system and military structure and his people's quality of life. 600 years after his death, the early Protestant Church in the 16th made him into a cultural hero, as the ideal Christian sovereign. He inspired many artistic and cultural works from the sixteenth century onwards, with a height in the Victorian Period 1000 years after his death when the cult of Alfred developed into a significant cultural force in literature, the visual arts, and national consciousness.
Best episode of Season 1. The final battle among the Vikings and Saxons is EPIC! What makes it more awesome is the haunting score by Eivør Pálsdóttir and John Lunn. It makes it even more EPIC than what it already is and Eivør's voice is just so mesmerizing. Can't wait for you guys to react to the rest of the show because it just gets better from here on.
You guys are the best - it would be great to hang but being in England that’s unlikely. You are in for such a treat with what is to come. I still cannot believe how this show has gone under the mainstream. I’m obviously biased, but there is so much in British history to explore. One to put on your radar is Taboo with Tom Hardy. Another under-appreciated glimpse into our history.
Steven is right about Egbert's Stone. Alfred's grandfather, King Egbert (the one you are familiar with from "Vikings") had established that land as the point where Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire met. It is indeed the same bloodline. Fascinating that Egbert's direct heir of 2 generations would happen to make that point the defining battle/turning point in defending England's future. Had the Anglo-Saxon's lost the Battle of Edington? We probably would all be speaking Danish or Norse, and refer to England as part of Denmark -- which funny enough, is where my ancestry stems. But I have to respect the way in which the English defeated my ancestors with such fervor and tactic, along with the vision of a unified country that Alfred never let die. It is why he is, to this day, the only English monarch to be accorded the honor of "the Great" after his name.
I remember when I first saw this episode and it showed Scorpa about to go after the girl I was thinking to myself, "Oh he's probably going use her as leverage against Uttred." and then when he showed her head I literally just was like "Wait what the fu-"
I looove this Alfred the most. His presence is commanding. I remember watching the show being irritated at times how he would treat Utred then I would be like "I really like this guy tho" even tho I was annoyed lol
It has been a delight to watch both of you during this first season! I never get tired of watching TLK reactions, I'll stick around waiting for more of you! There's so much more to come!!
The battle of Edington (Also known as Ethandun) is one of the most important battles in English history. If Alfred had been defeated here, England would not have existed. The battle site, on the hill, has never been excavated but is a popular place to walk. There is a nearby village, called Edington (named after the battle) as well as a chalk horse figure carved into the hill known as Westbury White Horse. It's a beautiful place. As much as I love many of the characters to come in this, I'll always miss Leofric. He was amazing and had such a huge impact on Uhtred. I loved Iseult as well. If you can have such a thing as a favourite death, young Oda's is mine in this entire series. It takes you by complete surprise because you don't expect his father to do the deed. I watched both this and the last episode together so just wanted to say something about Alfred's children. One thing I really like about this series is how they portray Alfred and Ealhswith's love for their children. It helps to make them more human rather than some dusty, historical figure.. We don't see all of them in this series but they did produce an impressive brood.
this one really got me deeper into the show. made me reminisce my vikings era, even tho i only finished the 6 seasons of vikings a few weeks before starting this lol. One particular weekend, sat on my couch all day from 12pm-4am watching The Last Kingdom while i was home alone. probably got through most of season 2-3. its so addicting, brilliant, and simply satisfying. you'll love it if you greatly admired vikings and game of thrones. Enjoy it!
Alfred suffered from Crohn’s disease, one of the symptoms of which is the body’s immune system attacks the lining of the intestines hence terribly painful stomach cramps. At least this is what experts think based on descriptions of his symptoms. It’s a progressive disease and we still can’t cure it today but symptoms are reduced & manageable with steroid treatments.
I truly enjoy watching you both react to this show and appreciate it. I am a fan of all period shows I have been watching these type of show since I was very young. My kids have asked me so many times why I watch these type of shows and now they too love these shows. I watched this show, Viking and GOT from the first day they aired and each time I would tell people that these shows are going to be awesome shows but no one believed me. Now I see so many going back to watch Got and now House of Dragons and now people are finally catching on to The last Kingdom. Now I can not wait for the Last Kingdom Movie to air. They have finished filming it so I’m like hurry up and air it but I know they still have work to do like editing. Once again I’m so glad you guys are enjoying this show because The Last Kingdom truly is epic beyond words..
Welcome to the violent and bloody Anglo Saxon England. The Anglo Saxon/Danish (Viking) wars stretched over centuries. It made the Hundred Year War look like a school yard fight. The vast majority of characters in this series did exist, and are recorded in the Anglo Saxons Chronicles. Even Uthred gets a mention, although he never left his power base of Nothumbria. The writer as used him to connect events and battles that did take place. This series is the best I have seen depicting Early Medieval England. Love your reactions, the best is yet to come.
I’m glad u guys loved season 1, a very good, down to the roots season. In my opinion every season gets better and better genuinly. I’m excited to see ur guyss further reactions to this
It only gets better from here. Character development is awesome. Season 5 has so much with twists and so much better ending than most of the shows in the last decade. Much better than GoT for sure.
This was the Battle of Edington, at which Alfred (without the fictional Ultread) defeated Guthrum. Alfred was not in good health in real history, it is thought he suffered from Crohn's Disease, an illness which forces the body's immune system to attack the linings of the intestines.
i started this show and now i'm so into it. im on season 3 episode 4 now. such an amazing show, but damn is he freaking handsome and with that long hair. i like young ragnar too so much.
This show was amazing. Each season had a particular plot, and each seasons finale wrapped up those plots. This show didn't waste time in any of the seasons. I can't think of any other great show that I can say the same thing about.
Yep this show is lean - not an ounce of fat (filler) but they do so much with the time they have (eg. Uhtred as a boy - we only got to know him through a few brief scenes in episode 1, but we learnt so much about him and his character in that time) - my 85 yr old Dad and I have a great bond through enjoyment of this show, (he has read all the books!)
Glad you like it! For us, this is our heritage. My part of England is situated in what was the Danelaw. Though l side with Alfred, l am most probably a decendant of Danish settlers.
🥹😭 Me listening to you guys in your opening comments about the baby knowing what was about to happen 😭 😁😁Also me listening to yall talk about Uda, knowing how he dies 🙌🏻🤣
I believe Isuelt doesn't choose the life she take but more she had the opportunity to help one of 2 child either Uthred son and or Alfred son. It so happens to be Alfred son that she helps because Uthred choose the path that would separate him from his Family.
So, what I failed to see during my 1st watch of the series and I’m curious to know if you guys see or even agree that some of Alfred’s most ‘intelligent maneuvering’ is ideas seeded in his mind by Uhtred?

alexander Dreymond would also be a great character in the game of thrones universe i actually think he'd be a great choice for Jon Snow.
too old
They got Uhtred's ass to play Cregan lmao
@@pakistancricfan1773 I know! And Baby Monk's gone psycho!!!!
This show has some of the best battle scenes.
Show is so good and we haven't even met uhtreds homies yet 😀
Oh those arselings 😆😆😆
Yes!! The band of brothers is so fun to watch ❤️
Uhtred's Pretty Boys 😂❤️
the show just gets soooo much better once Uhtred becomes a warlord and leads his warband of mercs
Quick fact They always yelled in battle to keep their adrenaline high.
Enjoy it!
I loved how goofy Nikki was acting with the spooky lights. oOoOO!
Uthred is riding with Hild and the “i have skill” guy☺️
Man, Charlie Murphy(Isult)is sooo damn beautiful. I thought she was beautiful in Peaky Blinders, but she looks amazing in TLK.
Not back then
i’m so happy you guys are reacting to this i knew you’d love it! was worth the wait
Yea the 2 “departures” in this episode gutted me for the rest of the series, which is not the last of that feeling… greattttttt show
This recap in the dark was awesome lol
I remember. this episode was so hard to watch. I mean come on man lost his child his wife and his bestfriend in 1 episodes.
Season 1 is great, but season 2 is where I got completely hooked.. Can't wait to watch!
Uhtred jumping that shield wall was beautiful! ⚔
Dude I love that you guys love this,!! Looking forward to the next seasons, good vibes from colorado.
34:23 it's a good look guys, you should watch TLK in candlelight anyway, you know, for authenticity 😉
Isn’t the real Uthred the ancestor of Bernard Cornwell?
Yes but Leofric dying in the ironic way he did....made sense. That's how easy u can die in a shield wall in that period
TLK is just GOAT! Told you you would become fellow arselings really fast. Now buckle up for season 2!
It wasn't blood on Skorpa's mouth, it was berry juice or resin, meant to look like blood.
It speaks to how good this show continues to be that my FAVORITE character by a long shot was Leofric, but I continue to enjoy the show.
Series just gets better and better from here
I’m glad u guys loved season 1, a very good, down to the roots season.
Nikki: “just like that uh… “
😂LOL
Yo! Give us season 2 already, lol it's tuesday
That's why he is Alfred the Great...no other monarch can boast the title
God, i love Beocca !!! ❤
The good thing about this series is that I can relate with the places it is set I live in Wessex and all the places exist.
🥹😭 Me listening to you guys in your opening comments about the baby knowing what was about to happen 😭
😁😁Also me listening to yall talk about Uda, knowing how he dies 🙌🏻🤣
Two Allicent kids appeared in last kingdom . Aemond and Helaena targaryen 😂
Show just keeps getting better
The child that died In Edwards stead was Uthreds
I can't believe you guys get too watch this and House of the Dragon at the same time. No shortage of suspense for you lol
Yes, I agree with some if the comments...every season gets better and better.
I love watching your reactions! Sons of Anarchy, Black Sails and this show are probably my top three dramas with GoT and HotD right behind!
I have to be honest, the lighting at the end was awesome for your reaction.
THIS IS OUR LAND!!
I’m super stoked for your reaction to season 2! The whole series is phenomenal, but season 2 maybe my favorite, with Utreds journey
Father Beocca has the best burns LOL
Lol of thumbnail of Nik squeezing Steven’s arm
And the series only gets better. Great stuff people..
That's not blood in Skorpa's mouth, that's berry juice. Vikings used to do that to look more intimidating.
Was really waiting for this episode, so much goes down...
When he said "this is OUR LAND" I thought that you guys need to watch and react to Hero (Jet Li movie, but much, much more).
Beacause of u guys
I started watch this show
And i think i found a gem 💯💯
This area where Alfred is hiding is where I live (somerset).. Hes our
greatest ever king..If not for Alfred there would have been no England.
That scene when Uhtred jumps over the shield wall is so badass, even if it is extremely unrealistic! 😂
No it wasn't, it was such a movie thing to do lmao.
Steven: King of The North.
Nikki: uhm slow down
Love you guys 😂
I believe Isuelt doesn't choose the life she take but more she had the opportunity to help one of 2 child either Uthred son and or Alfred son. It so happens to be Alfred son that she helps because Uthred choose the path that would separate him from his Family.
So, what I failed to see during my 1st watch of the series and I’m curious to know if you guys see or even agree that some of Alfred’s most ‘intelligent maneuvering’ is ideas seeded in his mind by Uhtred?
Been waiting all week for this!!!
