I know Rusty misses his buddy. What a great race recap... Unforgettable on a bunch of levels.
the best repair work ever
It’s so weird to think at 4:37 that man was here then gone in the same day. Just crazy.
Honestly a part of me wishes Dale would have maybe got hooked I'm the big one that way maybe he wouldn't have crashed on that last lap. Lot of what ifs. Love Dale and love Rusty. Two of the greatest drivers ever in my opinion.
With you buddy.
ironically, Dale and Rusty cars were milimeters away, had Dale been hooked he would have survived
Safe to say that Rusty had one of the best cars, if not the best in the '01 Daytona 500. He'd been a lap down and he got damage from The Big One and he still finished 3rd.
One of the Top 10 Gutsiest Comebacks in NASCAR history?
@@tomdalfonzo9959 no, he's come from laps down and won races before, many drivers have, Elliott made up 2 laps once at Talladega without the aid of a caution and won
These new cars would never be able to bounce back like that. If they hit a flying grocery bag they're a lap down almost instantly! Lol
It would of been Dale if he didn’t crash and die!
This should have way more view's. How come I'm only seeing this now??
My all time favorite driver. Go Rusty !
This man who was not supposted to finish 3rd place.
4:36 There he is. There he was.
Rusty is my all time favorite driver. Just sorry he never won the Daytona 500.
Rusty was my fav 2, ... I lost interest in Nascar after he retired
At least he had a championship
He's lucky he won a championship! 🤣
Thank you Rusty for the memories, we miss you on the track bud! I rewatched this race not long ago and came to the realization there's only one active driver left from that race, Kurt Busch who had just started his Rookie Year. And a total of 4 of the 01 500 drivers are now deceased including Earnhardt; Jason Leffler, John Andretti, and Bobby Hamilton.
Kurt was the last person to get a finger from the man himself.
Pretty cool hearing him call his own pit stops. Nobody doing that anymore.
He should've won the Daytona 500 in 1999. Life's just not fair sometimes.
That is the harsh truth about the 2001 race too.
he was out raced in 1999
@@User-nu6km no he just didn't pit for tires when everyone else did and his handling went away before the end of the race, he had the best car that day but his pit strategy screwed him, that's not to say he would have won, but he definitely would have had a way better chance
@@sevendst19 and him letting off the gas to not kill Ricky Rudd like JG was going to played a bigger role. That was the incident that brought out the don't pass under the yellow line rule.
Rusty Wallace would end up finishing the spot Dale would have finished had he not crashed. Watching the race live, I thought it was Rusty Wallace not Dale that crashed on the final lap at first until I saw that it was the 3 car.
I thought it was too because both their cars were dark colored so at the edge of the screen you almost couldn't tell them apart, I was thrilled Rusty got third, and couldn't believe that Earnhardt died
that's a rather animated eyewitness account of Earnhardt's crash from Wallace at 11:12
3:57.....yup
Fucking prophetic considering Dale lost his life in turn 3
This is an awesome documentary.
When he said "getting in turn 3 that's where all hell's gonna break loose" that hits diffy now :/
Is it true while the red flag was out , Dale said on the radio " if they don't do something about the cars someone going to get hurt or killed? It's a very weird feeling seeing pictures and videos of sr before the race
He refused to wear the hans.
I bet if rusty didnt go a lap down and have to work his way back to the front he would have won
“All hell is gonna break lose in 3 and 4”.
For the people that have never raced. Rusty actually wrecked Dale. Sterling and schrader were racing clean. Rusty had this idea he was gonna shovel a bunch of air under the cars. After the race you see him bragging about running in the middle and “They were flying like pin balls”. Every race car has a wake or a bubble of air on the nose. Rusty shoved it under dales bumper which canceled the spoiler downforce and the centrifugal force washed dales ass out left to right. But i don’t mind racing that way I’ve done it myself. But what annoys me is when guys play dumb when it goes bad and they won’t own it.
I was about to say this! Glad I'm not the only one
Dale was the king of moving someone with air.
He didn’t wreck Dale and if Dale had wanted to he would have won the race
What was Dale's plan with the 15 and the 8?? He wanted them 1,2 at the end of the race and he was the blocker. Dale put himself on Rusty, Schrader, and Marlin's nose to let the 15 and 8 fight it out. I understand the air, the spoiler, and downforce. Last lap you stick your car wherever it gets you to the front. Dale made a conscious decision to block for his two drivers. I miss Dale as much as anyone and NASCAR hasn't been the same since, however, if you want to blame Rusty or Sterlin for the incident, make sure we remember what Dale was doing to protect his driver, that's all I'm saying.
@@klk1900 no he didn’t.Wrecking someone is like the time at talladega when Dale spun rusty on the last lap and Rusty’s car went air born flipped several times and barrel rolled on the infield.Dale could have won the race but was blocking the rest so Waltrip and Dale jr could finish first and second. If Rusty thought he wrecked Dale he couldn’t live with himself and retired immediately
Nice video.
It's not brave brave brave its brave
Where can we find the full version of this?
I bought the DVD through Amazon in 2016. Not sure if there are copies available.
I wish he had not pulled up behind earnhardt. he took the air off earnhardt when got him into marlin.
That's not really what caused Dale to lose control - Dale was trying to get back in front of Sterling and misjudged it - Rusty was just trying to help push
@@JJA1987 rusty taking the air off the back of dale cause him to be unstable and wiggle and caught marlin. it wasnt anyones fault. but if rusty wouldnt have been there, it wouldnt have happened. Just like if marlin hadnt been where he was. Or if scharder hadnt hit him he would have crashed differently and lived. it was a combination of all of those cars.
