I was supposed to go to this race, my first Daytona 500, but my grandparents and I left because of the postponement, and I stayed up till midnight with my grandfather watching this race, and it was worth it. I did see my first 500 the next year.
My dad and I were at this race. I'll never forget a fan to my right screaming "WOAH!" and pointing toward the backstretch when Montoya hit the jet dryer. Nobody around had noticed what happened except for him. I thought he was just another drunk idiot, but he totally witnessed history when most around us hadn't.
When Newman flipped at Dega in 09, it wasn't shown on the big screen and my brother was the only person to seen him upside down hitting the wall.. I thought he was having his moments and I ignored him until they showed it on the big screen

We were sitting on the Supertretch during this. I’ll never forget MRN over the speakers: “Trouble! Juan Pablo Montoya’s car has just blown apart!” We all look towards three and see that massive inferno. My younger brother who decided to skip that year said he could see the flames all the way from the beach. That’s how big of a fire one Juan started...
Oh boy, I remember that my grandmother tuned into fox for a show( it was 8 years ago dont remember what the show was) but she got upset that it wasn't on, on the bright side that was my first nascar race i have ever watched, and have been a fan since,. And watching Juan Pablo Montoya Slide into the jet dryer was just something i have never seen before.
Wow, I had no idea that they made a documentary out of this! I was so excited for the 500 that Sunday (I watched the entire Sunday telecast), and then I found out it was cancelled. I remember going to school the next day, finding out that I would watch the race that night, and then came everything else. I watched the *entire* race up until the jet dryer incident. That's when I realized that there no way the race wasn't going to be completed before midnight. So I went to bed and then found out who won the next morning. That was unequivocally the craziest 500 I've ever seen, and no other is going to even remotely top it.
Who remembers having school that Monday by coming home with excitement to watch the Daytona 500 that night and tried to watch the whole race but had to go to bed for school on Tuesday? I hope I’m not the only one that dealt with this...
I do i was in school and i was really disappointed that the race was in the afternoon but my teacher assiociate told me the daytona 500 was going to be on primetime i was like yeah baby i can gef my homework done at school so i dont have to do it i dont care i was so excited
I was 9 at the time and I was excited for the Daytona 500 at my young age, but due to the jet dryer fire, I missed the finish because I had to go to bed so I could be ready for school the next morning unfortunately.
This was the first Daytona 500 that I watched basically the whole race. I was in college sitting in an office watching the race. I closed up the office and got back to my apartment which was only a few yards away. Turned on the tv and saw the fire. I remember thinking "what the hell did I just miss?"
the 2012 speedweeks is probably my favorite speedweeks that I've ever watched, I remember being so hyped for the pack racing being back, and it was just wild overall
I remember it been there for all the races that whole week waiting out the rain and then a crazy race best Daytona 500 I've ever been to and the craziest was not there in 2001
I'm surprised there is a photo of Jaun's car in Dale Jrs. car graveyard. Because he has said many times that when he asked Chip Ganassi if he could put the car in the graveyard Chip said yes but only if no photos or videos were ever taken of it. So to see a photo of it in the graveyard is really surprising.
I'm glad that they ran this race in primetime instead of late morning to about lunch time because I was in school at that time and I was not gonna miss the Daytona 500 on my life. I was 9 at the time. Now I'm 19 and still a nascar fan today.
I remember that I was there. and i left one hour before the jet dryer thing (because my favorite driver wrecked) Then i remember going home turning on the tv and going WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED
I remember skipping Kub Scouts for this race and by god I was not disapointed. I hated when races were resceduled to Monday Afternoon because I coundn't watch it because of school, then the rain gave us this absolute banger of a race.
I'm from Dublin IRELAND and NASCAR was on TV over here till a few year's ago and not anymore just as I was loving it gone off TV now I only get to see little bit's on RUclips days later. I miss it
The weather also forced one personnel change; John Cena, who was supposed to be the honorary starter on suggestion by Carl Edwards, had to leave for a WWE commitment elsewhere
OMG!!!!! I NEVER SEEN A SINGLE DAYTONA 500 END LIKE AT 1 or 2 in the morning!!!!!!!! So Many hours Nascar had to go through to find out the Winner of that race!!!!!
I remember getting disappointed that the Daytona 500 got postponed from Sunday to Monday because I knew I was gonna be forced to go to school. But I got lucky because I got sick on Monday with a fever, cold, and sore throat. But then I got annoyed when the rains came back and wondered if they were gonna postpone it again to the next day. Until they made the announcement on the news that they were gonna run the race at night instead. I was so excited and thrilled about it, and enjoyed the race all the way up to the Juan Pablo Montoya incident. I remember my mom calling me up from her place asking me what happened, I said I didn't know from looking at the replay, and when the replay stopped, I saw the huge fire coming from the jet dryer, and even the track got lit on fire. It was incredibly weird. I remember staying up to watch the remainder of the race, and going to bed at around a quarter to 1 AM. It was crazy, but it was worth it.
@@glenbrown3011 it’s ok dude, you don’t have to simp anymore, she’s in a relationship now. The desal fuel was what they were worried about melting the track which desal fuel can melt the track but no the jet fuel cant melt it. I know I had spelling errors.
The Daytona "500" should be held on the third Sunday evening of February every year, perhaps with the green flag being waved at 6 P.M. Eastern time, so local Fox stations' local 10 P.M. newscasts on the East Coast would start on-schedule (barring a weather delay or an extended red flag period).
I remember this race so vividly. It was the day after my dads birthday. I remember going to school that day. I remember saying to one of my best friends that we may have a nighttime daytona 500. We had it indeed. It was absolutely insane. By midnight, i was getting tired and ready to fall asleep. But then the explosion heard round the world. So i was like okay.... will Dave Blaney win this?! Then by 1:45 in the morning i was like yep we're finishing this. Then sure enough i was up till 3:30. Up at 7am for school the next day. My dad had asked me he was like so did you listen to the Daytona 500? Im like howd you know? He was like, obviously i know you... your a nascar fan you wanted to see where your favorite driver was gonna finish. I was like you mad? He was like ill be mad if you can't stay awake for class. I was awake throughout the classes i had. Then by my last class i was ready to go to bed. My dad actually got me a mtn dew to stay awake until going to bed that night. A daytona 500 a 15 year old girl will never forget. Here I am almost 28 and I enjoyed it
This was Juan's fifteen minutes of fame in nascar. He finally wised up and realized if he wanted any hopes of being known as a good race driver that he had to go back to open wheel. Quote of the year: "Seriously, are we all kidding ourselves? We just around for 36 hours, and we wreck on lap 1. I mean, we've got to be the smartest people, ever."
I have been thinking about why Juan was out on the track when the dryers are out. Shouldnt the track be redglagged and the cars ordered to go to pitlane?
He went in for a pit stop because his car was experiencing a very bad shutter, which was from the mount that holds the rear trailing arm for the rear axle and it was cracking. So they sent him out after his pit stop and he was suppose to pass by the jet dryers to catch back up with the field of cars, but the mount broke before he could get there causing him to hit the jet dryer
I keep forgetting this is basically what brought NASCAR into the social media age.
Even when Brad Keslowski with his phone in his car
The NASCAR tweet heard around the world... (thanks to Brad Keslowski)
It brought ALL sports to social media.

Just Juan :)
It was a partial mess up, but also a near miracle (The race could've been called off and Blaney would've won)
How many people does it take to explode a jet engine. Just Juan

I think Kenseth will go untill the 2020 season....... Literally because he would want to
The only problem i would have with Dave Blaney winning is that Tony Raines would be 3rd, and he's one of my least favourite drivers EVER!

Maybe Danica will take a page out of his book and do the same so Stewart can put a competitive driver in that car. The only reason he is keeping her around is for the sponsorship money.
She’s gone 👍🏼

they couldn't even get sponsors that would pay up after GoDaddy left LMAOOOO
