  • This special segment is dedicated to the brief history of South Philadelphia's Mob Ties. All information discussed during this driving tour is public information and can be found on the world wide web. Toon takes you on an in depth tour in the American Italian community of South Philadelphia.
Wharton is a neighborhood in South Philadelphia. Its boundaries are difficult to ascertain; the City of Philadelphia states it is along Wharton Street, west of Pennsport, and east of Point Breeze.
Lower Moyamensing is a neighborhood in South Philadelphia. It is bounded by Snyder Avenue to north, Oregon Avenue to the south, South 7th Street to the east, and South Broad Street to the west. It is served by the 3rd Police District, located at 11th and Wharton Streets.
Passyunk Square is an up-and-coming neighborhood of brownstones and historic, narrow "trinity" houses. Affordable housing and diverse dining options attract hipsters and young professionals alike. East Passyunk Avenue is lined with vintage shops, gastropubs and Vietnamese pho soup spots, as well as cheesesteak rivals Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks. Outdoor street festivals are popular here during the warmer months.

Note: Philadelphia had earlier mobsters like “Roccobene” and “Sabella” However this video focus’s on the mobsters from the 1980’s forward. Specifically focusing on the area where “Bruno” was killed, and forward. Sorry if I did not discuss other chapters of Philadelphia’s MOB History. Thank you🙏🏼

Some of your information is incorrect. You must also understand that the Philadelphia mob was first associated with the Gambino family. Bruno was close with Carlos Gambino but after Carlos Gambino passed away Bruno Iost all of his power. And remember the turmoil in the Gambino family with Gotti killing Paul Castellano. Vincent the chin Gigante did not like that Gotti hit because Vincent Gigante was close with Paul Castellano. Gotti didn't have the okay to kill Castellano by the commission.
So Gigante tried to kill Gotti but it was unsuccessful. Therefore I believe Vincent the chin Gigante went after the Philly mob family to take it away from the Gambino family since Castellano was killed. Perhaps maybe the Gambino family and Genovese family made a deal that Vincent Gigante take over the Philly mob and place Nicky Scarfo as the Boss.
But it was Joey Merlino's father who was Scarfo's underboss and it was Joey Merlino's sister that Salvie was to marry.
John Stanfa was the driver of Bruno that night and was in in the Bruno hit. And remember later on Vincent Gigante made Stanfa the Boss of Philly.
I also believe after John Stanfa went to prison Vicente the chin Gigante made Joey Merlino the boss. It's the mob commission in NYC that puts those Philly bosses in power. Joey Merlino can't just make himself the boss. The commission have to approve him as the boss. You can't just take over the Philly mob and appoint yourself as the boss. The commission in NYC that Lucky Luciano created years ago appoints the boss in Philly.
New York always had control over the Philly mob. Only people who don't know mob history don't know the Philadelphia mob and the Chicago mob is apart of the NY commission.

One more thing bro, Brunos house was the first one next to the 7-11. You drove right past it. He was in a car outside of his house, not on the corner of 10th and Snyder. Pause the video at the 5:10 mark. It is the last house on the left and there is a red Nissan parked right outside of Brunos old house. Any questions about South Philly let me know. I grew up there my whole life.

I grew up in South Philly at 21st and Moore and graduated from Southern (Class of ‘76) at Broad and Snyder. I was always told that Bruno was hit because he was reluctant to go full force in drug trafficking. The underbosses hit him and it was supposedly not approved by the Gambino crime family, out of NYC. Chicken Man Testa was blown away when he opened his front door and a bomb ignited. I also attended McDaniel Elementary and Vare Jr. High. By the time Joey Merlino arrived on the scene, I’d left the city and enlisted in the military.

I remember Bruno's murder being all over the news. His dead body was infamously on the front page of the Inquirer. That murder unleashed a scramble for power and it seemed that every few months, a major mob killing was taking place. Finally, the psychopathic Nicky Scarfo took over as boss and almost ran the Philly mob into the ground. Scarfo was reckless, gratuitously violent, and paranoid. I used to see Scarfo being escorted back and forth to court in Center City. Once Scarfo was sent to prison, the Philly mob slowly began to stabilize. Recent boss Joe Ligambi is credited with bringing old school stability back to the Philly mob. It is unclear at the moment if Ligambi or Joey Merlino or George Borgesi is the current boss.

Caponigro's (the guy who sanctioned the killing of Bruno) story is one of the most interesting stories i've heard in organized crime history. He thought he had the okay from Benny Eggs Mangano (underboss of the Genovese under Vincent the chin) to take out Bruno. Once Bruno was killed Caponigro was sent for by the Chin to NYC. So Caponigro goes to the meeting under the impression that he's about to be crowned the next boss of Philadelphia from the Capo Di Tutti Capi himself. But at the meeting Mangano stated that he didn't give Caponigro permission to do anything, he had no idea what he was talking about. And that's when they started torturing him (and I believe another man). Apparently John Stanfa was waiting for Caponigro at a nearby bar where Caponigro was previously summoned from. For some reason he left before the Genovese could get to him.

Pretty sure Al Capone spent a night in 4th and Snyder where the firehouse is. Before it was a firehouse I think it was a police station or something and they held him there for a night during transfer. He ended up doing some time in Eastern State Pen which is on 22nd and Fairmount.

Very good with educating people on the Philly Mob! Not many can go into such detail! People think that the mob no longer exists but they do. They are just very very well hidden and don't let it be known who the players are like in the past. Joey was always a decent guy to me. He was always very nice and I remember many times how he helped the poor in the neighborhood during the Christmas season with food and stuff.

Note the neighbor hood is clean, well maintained buildings, newer cars.
My dad took me on a tour of the Italian, Polish, German ,Irish and Chinatown sections when I was a kid. I saw the women of these sections cleaning their windows, the steps, and sweeping the sidewalks. We visited the Italian fish market. We ate pizza slices and watched an Italian man tossing dough high up into the air.
We taste tested all of the bakeries of each section.I remember it still fondly.

Joey Merlno had a huge ego, as did John Gotti of the NY Gambino Crime family. Their downfall was their egos. You’re right, the method of the mafioso was to stay out of the limelight and keep a low profile. The Expressway shootout was insane. With the proper supervision, Merlino might’ve made a great mafia muscle man, but he wasn’t a good leader. He should’ve been a hit man or enforcer.

I've watched many documentaries on the Philly mob and the turmoil they went thru killing off each other. After Angelo Bruno which ran the Philly mob like a well oiled machine for decades was killed off they never recovered. Everyone after him was too paranoid too greedy and too bloodthirsty too properly operate a crime family. Great video man you know your local history.

Angelo Bruno was protected by Carlo Gambino, an ally on the mafia commission. Bruno was allowing Gambino's blood relatives from Sicily to move narcotics in Philadelphia, while disallowing his own people from engaging in large scale drug trafficking (which was the crux of his internal issues with Antonio Caponigro, Riccobene, etc). Atlantic City was also at the time Philly territory and the Genovese wanted Philly to open it up to the wider mafia scene, something Bruno was not willing to do.
When Carlo Gambino died the anti-Bruno faction pursued the greenlight to clip Angelo Bruno from the commission. Funzi Tieri, the Genovese front boss lead Caponigro to believe that he had permission to move on Bruno. Caponigro was summoned back to NYC after the Bruno hit under the belief that he was going to be recognized as boss of Philly, but was told that no such permission had been given and Caponigro was subsequently whacked. Tieri took over some of Capongiro's NJ based rackets and the incoming boss opened up AC to the Genovese.

Truth be told, “Protection dues” were said to be for protection against other gangs, but if an entrepreneur or merchant chose to not pay, they were often harmed or their properties were. Essentially, “protection dues” were for protection against the mob. Pay up and they didn’t bother you. Choose not to pay up and be on their hit list.
