  • Growing up in South Philly has shaped me into the person I am today. The vibrant culture, tight-knit community, and delicious food have all contributed to my upbringing. In this video, I will be sharing some valuable tips for those who are considering moving to this neighborhood, or for those who are simply curious about what life is like here.

Seeing Penrose Diner just gave me a flashback memory i've totally forgotten about. Years ago in the early 2000's I remember seeing that logo and eating in that diner with my grandparents. They still had a smoking section in there. I was born and raised in Delaware and we visited Philly allot since my family is from around there.

I was stationed at PNSY from 1974 to 1976. I remember coming out of the Broad Street Station with my seabag on my shoulder and seeing an Italian neighborhood. I guess servicemen were not too popular after Vietnam in that neighborhood, there I am in uniform lugging a seabag and a guy watering his shrubs sweeps the garden hose towards me, I feel some water on my cover and back, I turned around and said "ohhh", he just stared at me with a deadpan look....like "welcome to Philly". LOL...Just like the Bronx. I was right at home. I remember at least twice a day they would blast a horn when a shipyard worker died. I don't ever remember the accident sign displaying more than 0 or 1 days since the last accident. I always thought since the "Philadelphia Experiment" in WW2 that PNSY was jinxed or haunted. I remember the "Broad Street Bullies" knocking the crap out of the CCCP hockey team so bad they walked off the ice after like 5 minutes in the first period. I remember the Mummers in sub zero January and I remember seeing Joe Torre in an empty Veteran's Stadium. There was an awesome Hoagie shop, like a NYC newspaper stand at the entrance of PNSY called "Blind Man's". I flashed back, thanks

Nice video! I lived in the Philly-area on two separate occasions for a total of 6 yrs, and I had a friend in South Philly. I enjoyed going to Devil's Den for several years, and it sucks that it closed in 2022. I also liked going to shoot at Philadelphia Archery and Gun Club (now Philadelphia Training Academy). Penrose Diner was nice, too. Finally, Isgro Pastries, Santucci's Original Square Pizza and Dante and Luigi's all served up delicious food.

Lived their 1986-87 US Navy on a barge. Nearby Whole pizza Wednesday $3.50. First Rita's ice with real fruit . 100 year old bakery near Italian market fresh filled Cannoli never tasted a better one. Pat and Gino's cheese steak, one had better meat the other had better Italian bread. I knew Philly like the back of my hand. Deive and parked anywhere. Went to Philly ten years ago, looks like Africa. Not one student from T U knew where the oldest Zoo in America was, not even mile away. Traffic so bad, cancelled a trip to S Phil. in 1980's S Philly had a stagnate drug depressive feel about it compared to Greenpoint Brooklyn where I'm from Cuz.
