Digging & Potting Giant Elephant Ears! Zygopetalum Orchid Update! Weekly Vlog

  • It's that time! Actually i'm a couple of weeks behind on this, but better late than never! In this weeks vlogs I am digging up and transplanting some of my tropical plants in the garden. Tropical plants like these elephant ears ( Alocasias ) need to be dug and stored during the winters where I live (zone 6b) because they are unlikely to survive the cold winters, and even when they do, they never grow into impressive plants the following year. I dig the elephant ears up from my garden, remove as much of the soil / clay as possible and get them going in a well-drained potting mix. After which I apply systemic insecticides to give those a few weeks to get into the plant's system before moving them indoors. Digging and storing them as dormant tubers is also an option but I've become attached to the small trunks they are growing and would like to keep that growth going if at all possible.

I know you made this video a long time ago, but I am pretty sure you have saved my elephant ears. I recently bought my house, and the elephant ears were already here. I had no idea what to do with them to get them through winter until your video. Some plants are well over 6ft tall, and I didn't want to see them go to waste. Thank You!

Hello. Are you going to film your garage grow space over the winter and are mums frost hardy? I saw some nice ones at the store yesterday but I'm just outside Toronto in Canada and I'm not sure if it too late to pick some up.

Hello! Oh yes, all late fall and winter I film from inside of the garage, surrounded by my plants and fish. 😊 garden mums are perennials into zone 5 and possibly zone 4 if situated in a warm spot. People are still planting them here, including myself, but we still hopefully have several weeks until frost arrives.

No I bring it in, thought with a ton of mulch can come back after our winters, just not worth the risk in my opinion to have it die when its grown so much for me over the years.
