I drive a Golf mk VI GTD with the DSG myself, and I can honestly not think of a better all-rounder. It gets out of the hole, it's nimble, it has tons of space, it's comfortable, it's really effcient and doesn't look to bad either. Very impressed with my GTD :)
Great point, Gene. I think VW would do their best to mitigate the price premium but cost is definitely a complicating factor. The "more money, better MPG" crowd is still pretty small here.
The colour is metallic carbon grey for those that are wondering... taking this out on a 2 year lease in a couple of weeks, carbon grey DSG - can't wait!!!!
I've been looking forward to the next generation TDI. I hear the GTI puts up great performance and handling in addition to its everyday livability. Looks like it's going to be a car for the ages.
it was probably wheel spin. He says after that, that the traction control and stability control have a hard time controlling the amount of low end torque that the diesel produces. Plus being FWD with lots of torque it's gonna be prone to wheel spin off the line anyway
The Brits get all the options as they pay dearly like we do in Canada for our cars. I thank God for the US but they do play a major part in what we get here in Canada. Cheers.
I love diesel cars, especially diesel engines made by VW/Audi. It's just a shame that here in Finland you have to pay diesel tax every year thats several hundreds of Euros, so unless you drive A LOT there is no point of having one instead of a petroil car.
Strange because diesels are actually more eco friendly. They emit less carbon dioxide, and thanks to new exhaust treatment technology the particulate emissions are greatly reduced. They are great fun to drive, and VW diesels will last a lifetime. Don't understand why they get so much hate from the motoring press; I'd much rather drive a diesel than a crummy petrol-electric hybrid with a CVT.
nigahiga6400 You're absolutely right and if they wouldn't tax Diesels so much here where i live, i would have definitely gone with a TDI engine instead of the TSI i have in my VW. Although the TSI engines are really good, fun to drive with and really good on fuel, it's just that the range you achieve with the TSI engines isn't as good as what you can achieve with a TDI.
***** Diesel engines got their drawbacks too. They are very loud, limited in RPM, they are more sensitive cause of the huge vibration and not fit for the city drive (you have to keep them a little higher on the rpm. I own a 1.9 tdi Audi A4 and I really enjoy the torque and the sound of the engine overall, but it's pretty noisy in here. Drove a Lexus is 300h and I can tell you that hybrid is much better if you want low noxes and nice fuel economy. The CVT can be something you like or hate, depends on what you want from your car. The Lexus is300h got a lot of torque because of the electric engine and 220hp, the performance will be the same as a diesel, but you get more confort. Engine is a big deal when you chose your car, but there are a lot more variables. GTD is a great car and I like it over the GTI. The S3 will be my chose if I would get a nice compact petrol engine car.
teknown That is true and Hybrids are a really great option for people who don't want diesel engines and only want the fuel efficiency they reach. The only thing that i hate about hybrids are the CVT gearboxes a lot of car manufacturers use, sure they are great in the city but when you put your foot down the revs hit the redline and stay there and it feels like the whole engine is going to break down. But i think it's a good thing that car manufacturers like Honda offers a manual with the CRZ and VW uses DSG gearboxes with their hybrid cars and both of those gearboxes are a lot more fun to drive with than with a CVT.
***** Amen. CVT's are awful. The DSG is as smooth as a CVT while preserving a sense of driving enjoyment and refinement. Some CVT's whine very loudly under hard acceleration.
His explanation for lack of steering feel " you turn the wheel, the car turns, turn it some more, the car turns more" ... In other words, there is none ya fan boy!
PLEEEEEEEEEEEEESE bring it to the states!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll trade in or sell my '10 TDi for this!!! I can't wait a year AFTER the MK7 Golf/GTI either.... :)
Bring it over dammit! I will soon be purchasing a 2nd hand Jetta TDI. If they bring the GTD over it will be the car that replaces the Jetta in my garage.
Mr. Micah, (Lucky Dog) wouldn't these cost more then the Petro (gasoline) GTI's if they did come here? And we now how Americans would react to that. More money and slower. Not, more money, better MPG, and longer lasting. Oh and remind me to come along on the next car review.
I wonder what that means indeed! www.vw.ca/en/corporate/press_room/press-room---golf-3dr.suffix.html/volkswagen-golf-gtd-2015---crossing-our-fingers---.html
GOLF looks boring and purposeful apart from that, this is simply worlds best car, nothing can touch it, even price is high u get a car thats more comfy than even a merc C class almost as comfy as Merc E class has gr8 mpg fun 2 drive unbeatable quality and unbeatable powertrains even the 1.4 TSI is much more powerful than some 2.0 NA engines, no wonder its world car of the year 2013
0:44 it's a picture of Golf VI, not Golf VII!

It’s Limestone grey
I like detailed reviews. So, please don't shy away. I think you do a good balance between being informative and being fun.
the golfs and GTIs were by far my favorite cars when i worked for volkswagen. theyre really better than i think a lot of people realize
My mom's old MK3 GTD ran 630.000 km. It is the most durable Golf engine.
Greetings from Deutschland.
Bring it!! I would trade my Tdi in a heartbeat.
I'm picking up my Pure White GTD up next week! Can't wait :)
This guy always makes good informative videos.
I've been looking forward to the next generation TDI. I hear the GTI puts up great performance and handling in addition to its everyday livability. Looks like it's going to be a car for the ages.
great review! One question though , was that a backup camera or a sticky badge at 4:02
The Golf gtd is great, I have had mine as a company car for while
it was probably wheel spin. He says after that, that the traction control and stability control have a hard time controlling the amount of low end torque that the diesel produces. Plus being FWD with lots of torque it's gonna be prone to wheel spin off the line anyway
Good review :) did you say the us won't be greeting it till 2014 dec??
The Brits get all the options as they pay dearly like we do in Canada for our cars. I thank God for the US but they do play a major part in what we get here in Canada. Cheers.
I hope they bring it here. It's cool and it runs on diesel. And it's fast, well it looks fast

His explanation for lack of steering feel " you turn the wheel, the car turns, turn it some more, the car turns more" ... In other words, there is none ya fan boy!

hope they bring it even with the diesel gates :S :(
It's the camera hidden under the badge :)

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEESE bring it to the states!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll trade in or sell my '10 TDi for this!!! I can't wait a year AFTER the MK7 Golf/GTI either.... :)
Why cars in the US are not as efficient? Why 10% 15% less?
Ahhhh perfect vehicle
Sebastian R, because 1 US Gallon = 0.83 Imperial gallons
I would buy in a heartbeat lol
That is beutiful ,I love it.

Oh and remind me to come along on the next car review.

skip to 0:42, watch for 3 seconds & exit... that's a reason enough to tell they know shit about Golfs!
