I had a huge row with my mum who insisted it was Lulu's blaaady song!! 🤣🤣 She covered it in '74 and made it a hit. I had to go in the attic and dig out the vinyl 😆
David Bowie was and will always remain my number one. No one better. I'm sad that reactors don't seem to get into him at all, and happy that you seem to get the thrill of listening to him in this song. Still so many other great songs to go: Sorrow, Life on Mars, Heroes, Rebel Rebel, The Jean Genie, Modern Love, Let's Dance, Moonage Daydream, Ziggy Stardust, Suffragette City, Rock n Roll Suicide, to name just a few.
I feel reactors are usually started off in the wrong way. It's generally Space Oddity, Ashes to Ashes, Blackstar, Starman, and Life On Mars? and I don't think it's good because it gives the context that he does relatively slow tempo songs about space. Then Fame and Let's Dance come up and people can acknowledge he's sorta groovy. But there's 40 other sides to his music through different eras that people miss, and it's because the requests are usually either the biggest hits or straightforward songs. Some of his singles are amazing for expressing his diversity, like this one. Most people just tend to drop Bowie after 5 or 6 songs, though. Not enough of his epic, sprawling songs or his out of the box songs.
There will never be another artist like "our" David Bowie. How great was the chemistry with legendary guitarist Mick Ronson? Those were some days back then.
David Bowie went through many phases. You might want to try some of his big hits like Life on Mars, Changes, China Girl, Ashes to Ashes, Golden Years...those are just the tip of the iceberg, he was around a long time! He was also in the movie Labyrinth and did the soundtrack for that as well as being the lead character.
I loved David's music. I've got all of his albums. I saw him perform in Chicago in 1983. The best concert I've ever experienced. He was fantastic. Every album he put out was so different, hence it makes sense his first hit was "Changes." 💯❤

He always has been there for me.. As a nurse working every day with critical Covid patients as I cried before I went into the hospital Space Oddity weirdly came on the radio randomly and gave me the strength I needed to face death and destruction! I even filmed a few of the days in the parking lot because you can’t make that up.. Thanks for bringing this music to the young and not so young! I enjoy it immensely!
Ok, now you’re talking! Bowie was the best. React to Changes, Life on Mars, All the Young Dudes, Ashes to Ashes, Ziggy Stardust, Space Oddity and Starman! They’re all classics.

Also space oddity is the first song about Major Tom (a fictional character David made up) and then Ashes to Ashes finishes the story (which was done in the 80s) then an artist in 80s named Peter schilling did a song called Major Tom related to these songs but he was not partnered with david at all- that song is also very catchy. Hope this helps :-)

one of bowie's darkest song. very well crafted, esp considering how early this was..... ill give all bowie fans a great tip. check out his performance of this song on sat night live. it can be found on youtube. check out his dress very closely. its layered. notice the inner sleeves that come down to his wrists. its a crucial hint as to what and who this song is all about.... this song is singing to the ages. back to the garden & the 40 days in the desert. the man who was given realm of earthly temptation.
I saw the Bowie art show at Brooklyn Museum. It was all his costumes (which he designed), his fine art, his writings and videos. He's more than a brilliant pop artists.
Yeah, many of the songs off nirvanas unplugged album were actually covers. If you watch the actual show Kurt tells you which ones are and who they’re originally by. As good as the unplugged concerts were, I think nirvanas unplugged was the best.

David Bowie, this is a genius, you can't compare him with anyone, his different, and better then almost anyone. Every album is different, even his world of David Bowie, from 1968 is brilliant. His been part of my life from 1968. And this young man, knows greatness when he hears it.

@@kelvinkloud I'd say his most successful venture was Let's Dance, considering it sold more than a lot of his albums combined and helped him to sell out stadiums internationally while The Berlin Trilogy pretty much bombed in the US. I get what you're saying when it comes to artistic merit, but when it comes to pure exposure and appreciation, he was best at making music that sounded like his music. The new wave and disco artists copied what he developed from blending styles, and he then took that back and created one of the most successful records of all time. Before that, 1984 was a disco song. Before that, Hang on to Yourself was a punk song. Before that, the 1970 version of Memory of a Free Festival and All the Madmen had guitar harmonies that Queen would later use. Bowie was ahead of the curve in many ways. He was more successful in most ways later in his career, but early in his career he laid a ton of groundwork. He was great at copying, but he didn't just copy. You’re right that there will never be another artist like David Bowie. He is entirely unique, and his catalog is nothing short of staggering. What a performer, too! His 1987 Glass Spider Tour concert in Houston was one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen! I am so fortunate to have been there. Even though Bowie is one of the greatest songwriters ever, I think my favorite song of his is actually his cover of “Wild Is the Wind” (the 6 minute version). It makes me cry EVERY time. There are almost no reactions to it, and it’s such an incredible song!! (If you react to it, please do the long version!) About the meaning of The Man Who Sold the World - it’s intentionally enigmatic, but Bowie did once say that it’s about “the devils and angels within himself.”
Bowie has so many hits that few reactors get to even the most obvious “deep cuts.” like this one or.. Try The Bewlay Brothers. A beautiful song. Lyrics: “Out of the box” is an understatement

"His songs get stuck in your head" ....though out my childhood I grew up with a tune in my head "take a look at the law man beating up the wrong guy...". We didn't have money to buy records and mom/dad didn't really listen to music. In 1983 I started work and started buying Bowie albums....it was then that I happened across "life on mars" the tune I had in my head since 1972/3? I had been a Bowie fan long defore I even knew of him.
Jay... I'm finding Gold in your past reviews... being a big Bowie/Queen/Prince fan and all Inbetween ...your love for them to shows... keep up the great work bud, peace and love 🤟
According to Bowie's friend Mick Rock, this song is about Syd Barrett from the band Pink Floyd, who retired due to LSD-induced mental health problems. I think Bowie is imagining himself meeting Barrett, and recognising the influence Barrett had on his music. Bowie's older brother had similar mental health issues, and Bowie apparently lived in fear of going crazy himself.
It's fun to explore Bowie's funk/soul years when he collaborated with a bunch of American artists like Luther Vandross on the song **Right* from the Young Americans* album. I wish you would check that out! There's a video of that song on RUclips with studio footage of Bowie collaborating with Vandross and some fantastic back up vocalists. Vandross really was the genius behind a lot of that album.
Young Americans is such a gorgeous album, and for many David Bowie fans, extremely overlooked. It and Diamond Dogs. Both have exceptional songwriting and top tier vocals. Right is a brilliant song, as are Win, Can You Hear Me?, and Who Can I Be Now?. That era was wonderful.
I remember when this came out and this is the original, not a version Jayvee. David always seemed to me to so laid back and there is something about him that I just love. I agree with you that there is not another like him. I prefer his original version it was hauntingly beautiful. Your reactions are great and you give your all to the experience. God bless you all love and hugs Mary-Ellen UK
Nice Jay may he R.I.P. one of he lasts song was black star you really need to do that it's just so beautiful. He has so many to choose from. He did dancing in the street with mick jagger. Love it 😊😊💖💖
You seriously have to do more Bowie reactions...his last album, Blackstar, was incredible and he is my absolute hero and always will be. The album Heathen is also wonderful, check it out. I was fortunate to see him live and it is something I will never forget.
Part of the reason people think this is a Nirvana song and not a David Bowie song is because the video for their performance on MTV Unplugged cuts out the end after the song where he says "That was a David Bowie song".
Have to give an edge to David Bowie original, Nirvana ' s version is really good also. Rebel Rebel, Stay and Changes are just a few of many excellent songs that show how great of a musician he was.
To think that David's music teacher at school when he was little called his voice... adequate. HAHAHAHAHAA! He also had a movement class of some kind, and that teacher wrote that he was the most imaginative dancer she'd ever seen. Then again, it was London in the mid-1950s, so who knows what that could have meant! I hope you could react to "Life On Mars". Brilliant song.
He also did a version of this with a lady called lulu. I strongly recommend you give her a listen, primarily “ shout” which she performed as a 16year old or second choice “ to sir with love”. She has an unreal voice for such a tiny person.
This song is partially based on a poem called Antigonish. It's about the feeling that writing personal songs is a form of prostitution. He was trying to figure out his personality and who he is, but writing about himself felt uncomfortable. 2 years later, he created Ziggy Stardust so that he could write for characters, and he wore kimonos, frilly outfits, and makeup to express the music while completely removing himself. It helped him a lot to build his confidence.
Great pre-Ziggy, early 'Spiders from Mars' line-up Bowie song... hooky, melodic, superbly recorded by Tony Visconti & famed Bowie guitarist, Mick Ronson... in Bowie's canon of Lp's this one is surely an early hidden gem... obviously Kurt Cobain thought so too
In later years, Bowie was smooth and suave, but I'll always love him at the beginning of his career before the rough edges got polished. Young and raw and perfect. Every teen needs a Bowie like this to assure them it's really OK to be different. Rebel Rebel ruclips.net/video/Vy-rvsHsi1o/видео.html
It's great to see someone who appreciates good music...regardless of the genre. Your reactions are so genuine & entertaining (thank you!). Lady Grinning Soul is my favourite Bowie song...you might enjoy it!
A shame some people think it's Nirvana's song. Anyway, Life on Mars! Now that is talent.
I knew many were going to think that.
It's funny too, because right after Nirvana performed it, Cobain said, "That was a David Bowie song".
I must admit I like Kurt Cobain's acoustic version much better, but I always knew it was a cover. Kurt was very clear about it.

Tony Visconti on bass, Mick Ronson on lead guitar and Woody Woodmansey on drums. Visconti also produced most of the early Bowie Albums.
This is one of my favourite songs, keep up the great work dude!
Have you heard David’s song The Laughing Gnome, this will definitely make you smile and laugh very loudly. He was soooo stylish, very talented 👌🏻🙏🏻
Woody Woodmansey played drums on this, apparently. Later went on to be a Spider From Mars. Him and Trevor Balder were a brilliant rhythm section.
Loving the Alien Live from the Reality Tour. Make you cry. Glad I lived in his time.
Wonderful reaction and intelligent comments on the greatest creative force in pop music besides the Beatles.Love your videos man!
Love it 😊😊💖💖
Hi Jayvee, the first time I heard this song was back in the `70`s when it charted with Lulu, David was doing backing vocals for her.
You seriously have to do more Bowie reactions...his last album, Blackstar, was incredible and he is my absolute hero and always will be. The album Heathen is also wonderful, check it out. I was fortunate to see him live and it is something I will never forget.
Also a hit for British singer Lulu , I think Bowie did the backing vocals , well worth a listen
He also did Lulu
Bowie is so understated.
Exploring David Bowie is a trip. He was so unique. Such great music. I can’t even recommend a song because there are to many!
Part of the reason people think this is a Nirvana song and not a David Bowie song is because the video for their performance on MTV Unplugged cuts out the end after the song where he says "That was a David Bowie song".
During the grunge era a teenager said to Bowie " I love your cover of the Nirvana song"
and Bowie joked "Hey, I'm cutting edge"
‘He was special’- you got that right Jayvee ✌️
Have to give an edge to David Bowie original, Nirvana ' s version is really good also. Rebel Rebel, Stay and Changes are just a few of many excellent songs that show how great of a musician he was.
David wrote all the music for Labyrinth 🎬 Talk about unique. Fantastical movie. Music is utterly beautiful. Great flick.
The track just puts you in a trance.
Watch “The Man Who Fell To Earth.”
My favorite Bowie song--Cat People (Puttin out the Fire with Gasoline)! 🐆
I am so glad I’m here. Have you done Life on Mars yet? My fave. I love your stuff, but I’m a newbie. X👍💜
David Bowie was a special talent and he is missed.
I loved David Bowie. Please see his "Heroes". Thank you. Best Wishes from Scotland.
Bowie was a true artist...check out Changes & Heroes
"Golden years".
"Lazarus"...RIP Bowie 🖤
Magic dance- Labyrinth soundtrack 🥰 Great song that will get stuck in your head.
His albums usually had a theme and sometimes to get the best understanding listen to albums as a whole.
Great pre-Ziggy, early 'Spiders from Mars' line-up Bowie song... hooky, melodic, superbly recorded by Tony Visconti & famed Bowie guitarist, Mick Ronson... in Bowie's canon of Lp's this one is surely an early hidden gem... obviously Kurt Cobain thought so too
David Bowie always seemed to be able to reinvent his persona and his music kept up with times while still staying true to his self
You need to do David Bowie "Heroes" Live version it is Bowie at a different level of greatness 🤯
Modern Love! Golden Years! and many many more!!
John, I'm only Dancing - and the Top of the Pops live version of The Jean Genie
John I'm Only Dancing, Drive In Saturday, Rock n Roll Suicide, Quicksand, these are rarely suggested classics by Bowie
It's great to see someone who appreciates good music...regardless of the genre. Your reactions are so genuine & entertaining (thank you!). Lady Grinning Soul is my favourite Bowie song...you might enjoy it!
