- i needed control knobs on the globe amp,( • Video ) so i made them like this. it was so easy and gratifying, i made a separate instructional video on the knobs for y'all. join me in the knob revolution!
be good,
tim
posted a year ago and relevant today. lost both plastic knobs in the car stereo turned out great 👍 feels solid and adds a classy look
I’m trying this currently! A friend of mine gave me a squire strat and I’m tired of the plastic knobs on it with the stupid *numbers* and I saw this in my recommended and was like “why have I not thought of this* and off I went! Got a price of scrap mahogany and tried using a hole bit, didn’t work lol mahogany is some hard ass wood so I traced a circle on it and used a jigsaw and cut off the excess wood and I’m now using a sander to get the little amount left lol can’t wait to see the finished product knob 1 of 3 is almost done, my friend that i mentioned also gave me a fender kingsmen acoustic/ electric! I hope he like the custom knobs I made because if it wasnt for him I wouldn’t even be able to play smoke on the water 😂
I am going to buy an antique floor model radio this weekend. Doesnt have original knobs. I am going to make some wood ones. Plan to buy wood cabinet knobs from hardware store and modify them using a similar method you are using. Plus will stain them. I am not paying ebay prices!!!!!!
That's so weird! I was literally thinking to myself the same process before I watched this video! As far as using a holesaw with the bit, make a starter cut and pulling the bit out so that way there isn't a hole in the center! Great video man!
I used a similar process to make knobs but I laminated a thin layer of wenge on top of walnut then planed the board down to the thickness I needed. I then clamped the board onto the drill press and drilled the hole for the pot shaft then I used a forstner bit to recess the center of knob down so that it would slide down on the shaft enough to cover the nut on the pot. Then I used the hole saw with the pilot bit removed to cut the knob free from the board. Worked great and the two tone knobs give my hand built bass guitar a little extra custom touch.
Rudy Candia sounds like you went the extra mile. Nice!
nice! I like how you told us the steps. I always learn when watching your vids. thanks for posting!
+YoGeeFamily cheers man. most vids are just for inspiring more than learning. i don't expect hundreds of people to turn globes into amplifiers! ha! but maybe you'll do something similar. y'know? but these knobs i thought a lot of people might want to make so i did a "how-to" style vid.
"You don't need numbers!" hahaha
Great tip on how to make the knobs. They are cool and look really nice. Douglas
+RetroWeld thanks douglas. i've made a bunch this way but finally started to get them to look good.
you did it again. I have been looking for guitar knobs that are 'different' without looking 'different'. This is just what I need to do is make my own (vertically since I have no lathe)
Glad to help!
I feel you man the struggle is real I am latheless as well
So simple, yet so beautiful! It's amazing what a nice looking knob can do to class things up.
details, right? I'm trying to get better at them. thanks man.
thanks, great idea
I made a bunch of guitar knobs out of cocobolo with the same technique a few months ago! I need to chuck them up on the lathe and finish them like you did. Nice work Tim as always. Cheers, Chris
right on. I made some when I made the guitars, but didn't do the finishing. that's what makes them pop!
Great quick tips! They turned out great. No pun intended.
+Marc Schaefermeyer i'm ok with the pun. thanks man.
😃
That death star globe is the shit
If I had any open space in my lab, I would have to make one of those.
Ryan Chappell thanks man. there's a video about the globe, too :)
Nice tip.
QOTD: "You don't really own it until you've taken a drill press to it."
+Barry's Workshop ha! that quote goes waaayyyy back. it's an inside joke. i said that to a fellow musician like 8 years ago who was asking me advice on repairing his guitar. i have like a dozen short videos of me taking drill presses to guitars on facebook. every time i do it, i send him a vid ;-)
I am on my way to electrifying my ukulele, and was a little worried about ugly knobs would ruin the look of my beautyful instrument. Not gonna be a problem this way.
Cheers man
Viktor Speiser cheers!!
Great video bud!
Right on man. This is going in the bag of tricks.
+Greg's Garage "people who buy things are suckers." - ron swanson ;-)
and i should add you could do all this with a cordless drill, too, a'la izzy swan!
Great minds think alike :-)
This is weird, the timing, the execution, the jeenyus ofmit all !
Always good stuff coming from the brainmind of Sway ....
+William Lutes knobaliscious!
Nice. I was looking for how to do this. Your video should be the first result.
glad to help! if you don't have a lathe, use a drill press. If you don't have a drill press, use a drill clamped in a vice ;)
tim sway Yeah, I have a drill press, but I really want a lathe. Give me an excuse to start looking for one on Craigslist.
:) of course! They are fun.
Great video! I might try this tomorrow and stain the knob ebony. Would look great on my guitar. I need to make it really low profile one. Any low profile one online is outrageously expensive
yes! go for it!
Nice! Thanks for sharing tim
thanks moy.
"You don't really own it until you've taken a drill press to it" Love it. Should be on a t-shirt
+mexiculture ha ha! that's an old quote and a long-running joke between i and some musician friends when i was "encouraging" him to make his own guitar repairs.
outstanding lil tip.
+John Wilcox glad you like it. thanks!
+tim sway Always love your videos. Thanks for making em.
Thank YOU for taking the time to watch them :)
Lucky for you have a lathe
Nice dude!! Good thoughts
+David Waelder thank you, sir.
Nice set of knobs........ Whoa, did I just say that out loud? Tim I am holding you personally responsible!
keep your hands off my knobs. :)
+tim sway Fourth grade humor....you got to love it!
I never really noticed the badness of the plastic knobs, but now i just cant see them as i used to, so this knob thing is in my future list...
right?? you have some beautifully crafted instrument and they stick the same type of knobs on it that are on children's toys and am radios... tsk tsk :)
good tip
SO what stops the knob falling off the pot? Or it it just friction against the knurled shaft?
Friction fit!
For guitar knobs they usually have some sort of insert or set screw. Would this type be ok to grip the pots properly and not be so tight that you risk splitting the wood while attaching them? I have some materials I plan to do this with using a drill press. Thanks for the demo vid :)
Some knobs have the threaded inset screw, some are pressure fit. Typically the pressure-fit pot shafts are split so the knob squeezes it a little as it goes on. they sell those little hex-key screws at box stores. you could absolutely drill a small hole and put one in. it'll thread itself if you carefully screw it in. I've done it on aluminum.
Thanks for the reply. I have split shaft pots and prefer without the set screw but they're push pull so I'm hoping to make something that won't pull off every other time I pull the knob up :) I want to knurl them for grip too but haven't thought of how I can do it yet.
they make a knurling tool for the lathe.
I don't have a lathe so I guess I need to find someone in my city!
Groosome128 i don't know how expensive the tool is if it's even viable, but you could use it vertically on your drill. It's just two wheels with bumps, almost like a can opener
I made some fake Shaker knobs (Faker knobs?) with my drill press after watching a Fine Woodworking vid. This is much easier.
+mexiculture shaker-style knobs on a drill press is pretty impressive! i'd love to see them. i'm usually a "less is more" kinda guy when it comes to design, so i kept mine simple. ok, i'm just lazy ;-)
+tim sway Not sure how to imbed photos, but I have several in my Instagram feed (@mexiculture) about 5 weeks ago. Here's one: instagram.com/p/6OGrExovyG/?taken-by=mexiculture
I found it really hard to get them all identical. I haven't done any turning in 20+ years and this was the first time I did it vertically, which I found awkward. Here you can see the variations instagram.com/p/6OWV3gov8m/?taken-by=mexiculture
they look great. i find it really hard to make anything identical on any tool! ha! nice work.
Nice tips again Mr Sway. I bought a load of carnauba wax flakes a few years back and for the life of me, I can't remember why. something to do with epoxy I think, but any chance you'd share your recipe?
I honestly don't remember! I think melted it down with some orange extract (oil?). you're better off searching instructables or something like that over asking me. that's what I'm gonna do this fall for a recipe to use with beeswax.
simple but nice
+Franko Radja the best kind of projects ;-)
Very cool
+McGinn's WoodShop thanks man.
Beautiful, sorry for bothering but what size of hole saw did you use?
I THINK I used 1 1/4", because that's the outside diameter, making the knob about 1"
yup, gonna use it
+My Garage Woodshop cool! yes, the wires twist up - especially when you let a 5-year-old play with it. i left the wires like 3 feet long so they have room to tangle and just try to spin it the other direction every once in a while ;-)
oops. I was referring to the globe. ha! no, the knobs are easy!
what drill bit size did you use to make the shaft hole?
oh geez, I don't remember. 9/32"?? i measured the pot with digital calipers and went just slightly smaller. if you don't have calipers, eyeball it then drill holes in scrap to find the best fit first. or shoot me a reminder tweet or something next week when I'm at the shop and I'l measure one.
+tim sway I've tried doing this before on scrap wood. The hole I drilled was just too big as to fit the shaft but loosely so that it didn't serve it's purpose
+Jack J denser wood, like oak or cherry, will hold better. soft woods like pine tends to stretch real easy.
+tim sway The problem I've had is that I can't make the "teeth" or whatever the machine lines are on the knob shafts
Jack J I hear you. you could also put a set screw in to the side of the knob, like some metal guitar knobs have. I've bought those little allen-key screws at the box store.
Came our great
+Xyienced thank you. it's that extra couple minutes of sanding that really makes a difference - and i'm trying to apply it to all my work.
You should go to Woodprix if you'd like to make it yourself guys.
