In this video I show how I build some neat cabinet handles. I use an easy to cut, yet super duper strong joint called the bridle joint. These are fairly easy to make and will spice up any project needing cabinet hardware.

Is it just me or does anyone else give his videos a thumbs up before it's over?... Like as soon as it starts. Huge fan thanks!
I agree. But I usually wait until it’s almost over though, just in case analytics picks up stuff like that. His videos are always great! That’s for sure.
Thank you very much. Thats a pretty big compliment.
I don’t even watch them, just thumbs up and move on. Quantity over quality just like a Chinese sweat shop
Yes, I do like them. They complement the grey finish and natural top really well, as well as saving precious resources used in manufactured ones. I'd like to see a build video too.
Thank you.
Compliments the top beautifully and really gives it that custom look.
Thank you.
What I especially like about your videos is that you seem extremly in control of what you are doing!
Thank you.
So glad to see someone use up wood that most would throw away, just takes a little effort and some imagination. Cheers
Thank you.
looks awesome. The natural wood contrast against the grey is perfect.
Thank you! Cheers!
Another awesome video Mike, you never disappoint. Great craftsmanship behind the wit and humor. I hope the RUclips platform stays relevant for you because so many people love your work.
Thank you. Me too, my videos have been in a slump. Hopefully I can get back on track.
Always happy to see your Videos. Usually I am up very early looking for peace & to a much needed WA recharge. You provide that. Love the drawer pulls. Welcome to Colorado.
Thank you very much.
Wow, those came out amazing. Your work with hand tools is so amazingly precise. I'm always in awe of your work.
Thank you very much!
Great to see you back again after long absence. Hope you all been keeping safe.
Good to see the detail & intricate accuracy in drawer pulls rather than off the shelf, big box stuff.
Thank you.
Great use of scrap Mike and agree on the contrast between the end grain and face grain. Always enjoy your videos!
Thank you Mike.
Very neat idea for handles! I had just this evening been pondering something similar for some drawers I need to make -- similar overall size and shape, squared, with long grain in all 3 parts. But alas, having no band saw, your bridle joint idea might be a bit of a challenge for me. Instead, I thought of joining 3 boards about 10" long like a trough, wide bottom, short sides, with the sides butted so as to cover the wide board's edge. The grain orientation would be running across the trough and up the sides, instead of the length of it. Then another trough with the sides not covering the wide board's edge, but sitting on top of it. Oh, and both troughs ending up the same exact overall dimensions (so the first one has a narrower wide piece and wider side pieces, and _vice versa_ for the other one). Glue up the two troughs using no brads or mechanical fasteners.
Now put each trough on the table saw sled, and slice off U-shaped handle pieces that are half the thickness of the boards used in the troughs, like slicing up a loaf of bread. Finally, take a slice from each trough, sand the sawed surfaces flat without rounding the edges (I very much like your adhesive sandpaper stuck on the flat workbench idea), and glue them together, so that the corners have the appearance of half laps. These laminated half lap handles seem like they would be pretty quick to batch out, and with some good sanding before laminating them to erase the saw marks, I bet the glue line would be nearly invisible (depending on how it aligns with the wood grain).
And come to think of it, a bridle joint handle would be possible with this method as well -- just cut slices that are 1/3 the thickness of the boards, and laminate 3 pieces (would have to start with one of the troughs twice the length of the other one, to avoid running out of parts).
Well thought out for sure. Building things requires a careful examination of the tools and methods at your disposal, then selecting the best way forward. I say give it a try.
I wholeheartedly agree, handles are perfect for opening doors and drawers! Nice design Mike, I’ll probably steal this and my wife will think I’m a genius… if she ever stumbles across your channel I’m screwed!
Ha! Thank you, those are some kind words.
Also love that you're a "belt and suspenders kinda gal"
Ha!
Wow. Seeing you cut those tenons with the bandsaw looks so obvious when you see it, but it has never occurred to me to do it that way. I can see a change in my methodology going forward.
Thank you.
Your precision on this build reminded me of your kumiko panels, top notch! 💖🌞🌵😷
Thank you Suzi.
Cmon realese the build video!
Great one
Thank you. I'm working on it.
My personal fav, Pulp Fiction!
"Check out the big brain on Brad!"
Lol
Ha! Great line.
Fine work Mike! Looking forward to the desk build video.
Thank you. Its on the way.
I love your videos and always learn something. Thanks!
Thank you Kim.
Handles look great. I reckon a brass dowel through the joint would look cool or a contrasting material of some sort.
Thank you. Thats a neat idea.
I'm a laces and Velcro kinda pal. Great work Mike
Ha! Thank you very much Cory.
The shirt is Pulp fiction! Loved watching your process yet again. I was contemplating doing this very thing in the near future and wondering about how I was going to do it. Thanks for sharing
Thank you very much. You nailed it.
I really would have gone with off the shelf metal handles, but seeing how they tie in with the countertop I get it now. It is a subtle, but important design aesthetic you achieved here. Well done.
Thank you very much.
I wouldn’t of
Thanks for posting Mike, Just came across your channel and every video is not only full of great jokes, but has some valuable woodworking tips in there as well!
I appreciate that!
Excited to see the desk build👍
Thank you. I am busy editing that video as we speak.
I picked up that sanding disc thinking it would be "kinda cool". I was very wrong. It is really, really cool. I would say more useful to face frame success than a pocket hole jig!
That is very cool to hear Eric. Thank you.
Mike, as always, I appreciate your videos. Humor, great workmanship and movie/music references in every one. Love that Big Kahuna Burger!
Everyone else - get the tapered sanding disk. It is a game changer. I love mine.
Thank you very much Dan. I could use some tasty beverage to wash down my burger.
Liked the look of that furniture, waiting on that video.😊
Thank you. I am busy editing that video as we speak.
Can't wait for the full build video!
Thank you. Its on the way.
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very helpful! Thanks for sharing!
Glad it was helpful!
Looks great!
Thank you.
Great job Mike. Love all your work!!!
Thanks a bunch!
elegant and well executed as always!
Thank you! Cheers!
Great finale to the project. The choice of material and the sizing are spot on. I was surprised how relatively simple the construction was, with the heavy lifting done by the band saw. Whouda thunk it? I can even picture a laminated variant (three plies) of these, perhaps, with two types of wood, say maple and cherry.
Thank you. I like the idea of laminating a few strips, that would be an efficient way to make these.
looking forward to the build video
Thank you. It'll be out soon.
Those are good looking handles.
Thank you.
Always great to watch a Mike Farrington comedy session disguised as wood working 😂
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm sure a lot of us wish we had to traipse between the band saw and table saw...mine is more like a studio bathroom, sitting on the throne you can open and close the door, wash your hands and run a tub of water...lol
Ha! I like the analogy.
Beautiful work, thank you 👍🏼
Thank you! Cheers!
come for the woodworkery, stay for the voiceover

Been a fan of all your videos and your craftsmanship for quite some time now. Wondering if you'd be willing to make a set of cornhole boards with all of your experience?!?
Thank you. You mean as a video, or you want me to build you some corn hole boards?
That (desk and pulls) look very nice.
Thank you.
Kreg has a nice cheap jig like that for lining up the handles
Yup. I think this one is a little better quality. I bought this one before the Kreg one came out.
PSA: Everyone needs one of those sanding discs. I thought about it for months before pulling the trigger and finally caved and got one. This thing is a game changer! It will literally pay for itself on your first job with it. Guaranteed.
Thank you very much. Great feedback.
I'm 3 days late but Pulp Fiction... What a classic.
Also I want that desk in my office. Ship it abroad?😂
Great movie for sure. Ha! Shipping would not be cheap, that's for sure.
Love them! Great little, but precise, project. And who says shaker is out? Love the desk.
Thank you. Desk video will be out soon.
A Tarantino classic - Pulp Fiction, of course. Also - I feel that you would be a great audio book narrator.
Nailed it. Thank you. I have looked into it, I think its one of those things where you need to know the right person to get your foot in the door.
The shirt is a reference to Pulp Fiction.
Nailed it.
Salubrious!
Thank you.
The movie is obviously Space Jam.
Yes, nailed it.
I'd like them even if they didn't open the doors and drawers. Pulp Fiction - not just one of the better films of 1994, one of the best films of all time. (IMO),
Thank you. It is a really neat movie, for sure.
Yay!!
Thank you.
I’ve actually never seen “Pulp Fiction.” To be honest, I’ve only seen maybe twenty movies my entire life. I don’t have the attention span to sit through an entire movie. I find it difficult to complete almost anything I start. You could say I have a black belt in partial arts.
Ha!
Toootooday junior... finally.
Thank you.
Love them handles, what colour are the doors?...love it
Thank you. Its Classic French Grey from Sherwin Williams. It looks a little less blue in person.
Speed! The movie was Speed... What do i win?
Hmm.
very nice, Mike. very nice.
"that is a tasty burger"
Ha! Thank you.
Pulp Fiction!

WTH, your still here? was missing that sweat voice of your's! and your magic skill too.
I'm here, just slow.
Great video, that movie you speak of is free on youtube movies just a fyi...
Great tip. Thank you.
Where do you get those internal square wood scews?
Do a search for square drive screws, you should get some good results.
love your work as always. The cloud shots between scenes are nice. How long do you record to get those 2 second clips?
Thank you. Normally 30 minutes or so.
What! No music recommendation? Unsubscribe! But I do like the pulls and your explanation of making them. Thanks for the video.
Thank you. I'll have a music recommendation in the next one.
@@MikeFarrington There are dozens of us who enjoy the recommendations Mike. Dozens!!!
@@Conan_Obrien Ha! I would not bet on more than a dozen.
Hi. Is that a PEC 'double square' at 8:20 ? I just bought one in NZ - horrific price, but made in USA so it's worth every cent.
What other things do you carry in your tool belt to help your work?
Yes, it is. Good eye. They are pretty darn nice tools.
Personally I prefer a minimum of 4" for handles because the width of all four of my fingers is just slightly wider than 3"
Thats a good tip. Build stuff to fit you.
Eye and ear protection--new look?
Thank you. I always wear ear protection, but the eye protection is needed these days.
Band or jig or table w sled .
Both have their uses.
@@MikeFarrington For sure. A sled has made me feel completely safe doing certain cuts on a table saw that I would only use a band or jig for otherwise. (good look on handles !)
@@hj8607 I agree, a sled can take something from sketchy to as safe as possible.
Karate Kid (redux), Pulp Fiction, Princess Bride. So this was a 3 day build for drawer pulls .... a Not For Profit venture. :)
Good eye. With filming it was a couple hours on a Friday afternoon, a couple on Saturday morning, and a couple more on Monday. I really tried to slow this one down and take better shots. Making videos is a huge waste of time and money. Thats why the spot for my sanding disc.
Your bandsaw cuts look like they came off the table saw. What blade do you use?
Thank you. I use a Lenox Carbide tipped blade. Its not cheap, but its stayed sharp a long time already, and cuts super clean.
Mike's bandsaw game is on point
@@akirch9 Thanks.
Thinking outside the box? I need to have handrails for my mother to get out of the shower. Could these pulls work, in a larger size, as handrails, outside of the shower area, so it will not be subjected to water from the shower. Of course steam moisture would be present. Bathroom handrails are so ugly, be cool to have something nice, like these pulls.
You could make that work using teak.
How wide should table legs be?
I have tried and tried getting the paint finish that you do but never seem to. Whats your secret
Thank you. Being a professional woodworker, the finish is what the customer sees and interacts with. Its the most important part of the project. As such I have really focused on getting good at finishing. I have been wanting to do a finishing video, but my channel just doesn't do well enough to justify the time and costs involved with making the video. Hopefully that will turn around.
You know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in Paris?
Ha! Metric system.
6:55 Pulp Fiction

Serious Question > can you ever justify the price of all the tools necessary for woodworking as an amateur? I'm looking at the tools here, thinking there is a full 25k worth of gear. Unless you do it professionally, it's just another expensive hobby. Am I wrong?
I am a professional cabinet maker. Check out my website for more information.
3:25 No need to brag dude.
Ha! You're probably right.
So infrequent these days
Yeah, I would love to change that, but kiddos come first. When the school year starts I'll have more time for video production.
Why is it called “ripping” for bigger jobs and “cutting” for smaller jobs, when what you’re doing is “sawing”?
A rip-cut goes along the grain, and a cross-cut across the grain, it's just easier to go with saying ripping and cutting I suppose :)
So it’s not really about the size of the job, but rather in what direction the rip/cut goes?
Ripping is with the grain, cross cutting is across the gain. I normally don't say ripping in my day to day conversation, but on video I try to be more accurate with my words.
Thank you Snoot and Mike for clarifying.
@@MikeFarrington Or this: Rip cut: A rip that is so clean it looks like a cut. Cross cut: Cutting out a ✝ shape.
No matter how much of a professional I KNOW you are, I still cringe every time I see fingers near a bandsaw blade... :/
I'll say this, pro motorcycle racers rarely cover the rear brake when they are doing wheelies on the cool down lap. I also cringe every time I see that. Hope that makes sense.
@@MikeFarrington Absolutely!
DO THEY SPEAK ENGLISH IN WHAT?!
Not sure I follow.
Glad you’re still uploading. Love the channel bro.
More to come!
@@MikeFarrington I really disappointed you didn’t say “Glad you’re still DOWNloading!”
@@jeremyspecce Maybe next time!
Hey Mike I remember you saying you would like to have a large CNC machine instead of a table saw. Which model(s) are you currently salivating over?
Thank you. I have since purchased a 5/9 Avid CNC. Its a great machine for the money and my small time use.
Pulp Fiction. Terrific movie. Who can forget Travolta's death by pop tart -- and other memorable moments?
Its a neat movie for sure.
Excellent design and execution Mike! I can see myself using these on some cabinets in the future!
Thank you Matt.
B-E-A-UTIFUL JOB, yet again. Never disappointed
