    So for those concerned about the bass output. Arendal was designed as a THX Ultra speaker. Because of that design, lower bas output below 80hz is subdued. It's the design to pass the THX Ultra certification. It's not a shortcoming. Arendal is going for a speaker that is one of the best home theater speakers and still amazing at two channel.

    Arendal is a town in Norway, where the owner lives and has run his hi-fi business from long before becoming Arendal Sound.
    Arendal became a city in 1723, thus the second name.
    The S at the end is for Small, compared to the 1723 non S series.
    The S-series has 6.5 inch driver vs the 8 inch in the regular 1723 series.

      Wow, I would never have guessed that. What does the 1961 series for? The owner's birth year?
      I would love to see their speakers in a wood veneer with the whole scandinavian feel to them.
      Any relationship to the kingdom of Arendelle in the movie Frozen?

      @@techsamurai11 1961 is the year they built the bridge between Arendal and Tromøy, where he grew up. Pretty local references in other words.
      Yes, the name Arendal is the inspiration for Arendelle.
      Arendal was a great merchant city during the sail ship era and is built on 7 small islands. It used to have a lot more water and canals, but progress has closed those up.
      Just a word of advice, never talk to someone from Arendal about the canals or you might get a hot take for or against reopening 🤣

    Hi Thomas, really great review as usual, I recently received a pair of 1723 monitors and the only thing I can say about them is they are friggin awesome, I’ve been listening to them in stereo being driven by a Parasound halo integrated and they just keep getting better every day. The waveguide throws a huge soundstage with instruments being to the left and right of the left and right speakers, which is amazing as I’ve never heard this before. In my opinion no sub is needed as they dig down to 35 Hz but I am waiting for the matching centre to integrate into my Home Theater, I have a feeling I’ll be completely outfitting the rest of my theatre with Arendals.

    Jay Iyagi just reviewed the 1723 Towers and had nothing but positive things to say about them. I'd love you to do a review of the smaller 1723S Towers, as most people cannot accommodate massive towers with 8" woofers in their lounge. At least nobody in England, where the average house is the size of an Egg Box.

    Thomas, Well done review. Arendal seem to use model numbers that align with historical dates for their country. P.S. I can sympathize with dental issues and hope you get relief soon.
    So... I'm using the larger 1723 Monitor (not their tower model) for music and as L/C/R for movies (big brother to what you reviewed here)--very very enjoyable. The Monitor model is very heavy and sizable. Those have 2 ports in each but I use them plugged as factory-provided. I drive with Parasound A32+/P6 for music and then for movies I use an HTR6160 (I think same as RX-V663) Yamaha AVR--so old! My Arendal, new KLH Model 5, and vintage Yamaha NS-1000M have all been in the same room for a few weeks. Great fun but the others will leave this week (my friends are recalling them).
    Both the Yamaha and the Parasound have bass management so only 80Hz and below are going to the same sub in your review. The Parasound uses the XLR inputs in the sub and the Yam uses the RCA inputs in the sub.
    Not cheap but this is likely my final system.

    💯 % agree with what a good subwoofer can bring to the table and open up the hell out of your system if done correctly. I had a stubborn friend who only think he got he think a superb amplifiers 3 pieces chassis of Canary Audio mono-blocks ($25,000) big deal, pair with Gamut or Tannoy, keep repeating and think his system are best already and there’s no sub needed. OMG…Plus never do any speakers placement, and for 30 years he think he listen to the best…😂

    I prefer sealed/acoustic suspension speakers. I'm old school and my ear grew up in the late 70s-80s. Acoustic Research, Advent, KLH, etc. Ported speakers were sloppy booming bass boxes. Fine if that's what you're after with pop music. Sealed were much more accurate sounding and less fatiguing. Yes, as long as you have the current to drive them, they sound wonderful and more musical. I push sealed subwoofers in my car as well. Kickers driven by an old guard JBL car audio amp. For my near field, bookshelf setup, I have sealed KLH's driven by a high current Sonance amp. I literally have them in a bookshelf. :)

    Did your friend have to use a poweramp the puts out 300w in 8 ohms to get good bass from these?
    I'm a bit confused as I have the monitors 1723 that is rated at 400w in 4 ohms. And I am using an amp that puts out 200w into 8ohms. (Not sure what it puts out in 4ohms, but it works none the less).
    The point is that the bookshelves are rated at 200w in 4ohm and a poweramo of 100w in 8ohms should be sufficient.
    The point is that I am getting a ton of bass, so I don't understand. Is your room treated properly? I don't doubt that you have treatment, but this is just no making sise. I have also tested a lot of speakers, and found that the more treatment I put in the right places the more bass I get, and also I don't need as much volume cause the speakers start to sound louder and louder. (Not a technical expert, so cant explain why this happens), and this goes for other rooms I have tried my speakers in too. .

The Arendals are also very intriguing from what you describe here, however, I don't particularly have a powerful amplifier (A chinese tube Class AB 30w RMS @ 8ohms with 4ohm capability), which concerns me. Is there another option in this price bracket worth considering, primarily for soundstage and imaging?

Thinking it'd be around $10-$15, I said, sure and then I was sent 4 options for shipping ranging from $150- $250 for a $300 watch that I could buy with free shipping! Not my cup of tea. I don't get the appeal of inefficient speakers.
    The sound clip with the sub brought out a little more bottom end but the image was smeared. The no sub option sounded cleaner.
    To me better sub bass brings space and room clues. The sub actually seemed to bring less of that.

      For me, sealed speakers are more nuanced in general. There are many settings for the sub so just have to play with the parametic eq to get it perfectly integrated. I actually ran the sub a bit louder for the recording.

      sealed speakers have different box tuning by the way of internal volume, so for best results ported and sealed are made differently. smaller walls increases stiffness.
      also the internal dampening material or stuffing is different and in sealed you can use much more of it reducing internal reflections.
      so no plugging ports are not the same.

  • @djfirestormx
    @djfirestormx 2 года назад

    While I am currently working on my own line of speakers, I take great love for other companies and how they bring out their sound. It is part of loving audio. But -84 dB is just to low for a single driver. Granted sealed does lose a decent amount, but for me I would rather go back to the drawing board on the woofer than force the consumer to need a 300+ watt class AB to actually get the joy of it. Yes speakers will always sound better with better amplifiers, but driving power should be decent enough where those with really nice vintage amps can get fullness as well. I get it though because with things like Purifi it is becoming cheaper to get lots of power, but I always have the mentality that classics should be allowed to bring life to them too.

    • @sudd3660
      @sudd3660 2 года назад

      sealed dont matter towards sensitivity, it only affects the rolloff point.
      and i have tried and do run my arendal with purify amp(175w8ohm) with great results.
      and my arendal speakers has even smaller sealed cabinet but has higher sensitivity since its MTM design, at 87db

    • @djfirestormx
      @djfirestormx 2 года назад

      @@sudd3660 unfortunately that's not entirely true. I blame myself in my wording. electronic sensativity is measured open baffle or free to air. when you put a driver in an enclosure it will boost certain frequencies. this effect varies dramatically depending on the motor design of the woofer. your mixing the difference if sealed VS ported effects in the F3 of the measurement, nor the nominal listening sensativity. you are not wrong but also not right. welcome to physics lol. ported boxes allow designers to even boost the F3 where sealed (if made correctly) will roll it flat. however when using sealed cabinets, drivers with a weak motor structure are sometimes inhibited in their Xmas which in turn has a play on nominal sensativity. I have tested this as I also have proper measurement gear and sealed boxes are usually 1 or 2 db lower through the primary listening window of a woofer than a ported speaker that is not tuned really low, which should be left to a subwoofer anyways IMHO. I know the driver in this box and it is capable of 87 db. this is not a bad thing, they designed it this way in purpose. but from the availability of modern woofer motors, 84 is too low. if I were the designer I would go back to the drawing board. forcing consumers using pure class A to run really hot or not at all is also hurtful to sales, just saying.
      in a nutshell they choked the Xmas of the woofer to give a tighter bass response. it's a choice mainly but I still stand by my design philosophy on making products more accepting of amplifier choice. they could have done the same thing with a better engineered woofer

    • @djfirestormx
      @djfirestormx 2 года назад

      @@sudd3660 also your using a purifi amp, which supports what my first comment said. those are really powerful amplifiers compared to many others even now on the market. a user shouldn't be required to purchase a new amp to meet the sensativity requirements of a poorly designed woofer motor. the speakers job is not to set the bar for amplifier choices but rather allow users enjoy a vast variety if different amplifiers based on their personal listening taste. this speaker prohibits that aspect of audiophiles and almost forces amplifier conformity

    • @sudd3660
      @sudd3660 2 года назад

      @@djfirestormx sensitivity in general has always been the over volume at 1 watt. not howe loud a subwoofer can play at 100hz or below with aid of box design.
      and good subwoofers or speakers with ports or other fake bass implementation should extend the bass response not boost it higher up. that is spl design.

    • @djfirestormx
      @djfirestormx 2 года назад

      @@sudd3660 I don't agree with methodology of boosting bass at all. I'm just stating that it's physically possible to do that. I prefer sealed boxes myself. But the thing about sealed boxes you need to use higher grade woofers to satisfy a larger Market. Same with open baffle. The primary reason these speakers are not as sensitive as they should have been designed is because they used woofers that have a Q factor more intended for ported boxes. Obviously they chose them based on how they sound but personally I would have explored more options. Just so everyone is aware I'm not actually saying anything bad about how they sound, they obviously have a lot of good audio traits that people love. I just expect more at certain price points
