I have my 1723 Monitor S and 1723 Surround S on order following the review by Spare Change. I’m in the UK and saw very little else about these speakers before Shane’s review. I was looking to upgrade my speakers to the Bowers & Wilkins CT 7.4 series, however, the Arendal’s really caught my attention. Sadly, due to delays in China, they won’t be with me until late August (ordered back in June).
I just ordered them as well. I was torn between the B&WCT 7.3 front stage and 7.5 rear stage but I decided to go with the arendal 1723s monitor theater package. I’m waiting as well for them. Right now I’m trying out the SVS ultra theater package.
@@darrelltchir284 I’m still waiting on the towers. I got the Ultra center, surrounds, height and rear speakers, and PC2000 and 1 PB3000. As of now, I’m not too happy with the center, the surrounds are really good and fill up the space. The towers were shipped separately and were lost during the first shipment. As i keep reading more abs more about the Arendals, I think I’ll end up with the Arendal 1723s package. It arrive on the 18th. I was expecting more from the center channel. It’s better than my B&W HTM-62-S2, but not by a lot. The B&W Ct 7.3 is what I really wanted but they’re a bit more than I want to spend and SpareChange did a review on the 7.4s and said the Arendals have a bit more depth to them.
Im in the UK looking to move from Klipsch 500c and R-625FA towers, to 3 Arendal 1723s for the front soundstage, (I have a couple of SVS PB1000's subs that's more than enough bass for me) and currently own Emotiva BasX A3 and A4 power amps to suppliment my Denon X6700H. But I cannot seem to get the Arendal site to open to view, I plan on getting the 3 Arendel's next year 2023. Could anyone give me a price guide on the 1723s.
@@johnbancroft5242 hi John. I’ve just tried and their site appears to be working (for me, anyway). The 1723 Monitor S are currently showing at £1659/pair GBP. :-)
They seem real nice, I’m really digging the chart standard you guys are using with the dispersion, and acoustic power curves at the bottom. I’m always curious about this style of 2 way design and if any mid-performance is lost in transitioning from a tweeter to a 8” driver. Or if a 3” mid would bring an advantage. Maybe a power compromise between hitting midrange THX level output, and preserving crossover fidelity. Maybe none
You're exactly right, good observation... a key potential weak point to such a two-way is the upper end of the LF driver, and lower end of the HF driver. The big waveguide helps the lowest range of the tweeter... but it establishes a sizable c-t-c distance creating lobing nulls. That said, the upper range of the LF drive unit is likely key to quality playback. It really needs to be clean... ie., clean and minimal ringing noise seen via CSD measurement. Another challenge jumping from a big cone to a 1" dome is beamwidth discontinuities. Again, the waveguide for the win, but the cone is fighting physics with directivity. The addition of a dedicated midband driver, making it a three way can certainly help, but it also adds an another layer of complexity to the crossover. There's so many newer drivers typically offering great performance and control of the cone misbehavior.
@@FOH3663 awesome! I also wonder about how important it is for the mass of the driver to be proportional to the wavelengths of it’s operating band. I’ve recently been feeling that I may be more satisfied with something light and responsive, rather than slow and powerful. But I feel that thinking may be a misconception, and that overall sensitivity supersedes concerns over the driver mass. Speaker A could be lighter than speaker B but also be larger. Or if a coil adds weight, but the magnet adds responsiveness, then the big one could outshine the small one, and provide more cone area at the same time. But I haven’t been hands on with enough speakers to observe any trends relative to size or type. So I’m reluctant to embrace theoretical rules of thumb, even those that make sense to me. In the system I’m building now, I have 7 tower speakers, each with dual bass drivers, most of them are dual 8” but 2 of them are dual 6.5” they go down to 45hz and the 8’s to 35hz but if I cross them all over at 80hz which set would sound better the 8” or the 6.5” They also have identical mids and tweeters. The infinity Beta series.
@@SwirlingDragonMist All I know about mass relative to performance is sensitivity. Read Eric Alexander's work on the subject, I believe he's applied for a patent... regardless of it's veracity. Your question hits at the heart of loudspeaker design; everything matters, and the designer must balance the attributes they're striving for. There are few pursuits as all encompassing as loudspeaker design. Physics, materials science, acoustics, fluid dynamics, electrical/electronics engineering, auditory perception and psychology, pyscho-acoustics, mechanical engineering, etc, etc.... Chineese philosopher Confucius say;... "in transduction of electric energy into enjoyable sound, the craftsman wears many hats" Yep, speaker design, that's his most widely known quote of wisdom. His rarely known quotes include; Before embarking on a journey of revenge, first dig two graves.
Would have loved these to be measured as a center aligned horizontally as people would use without AT screens, to see what kind of lobing issues they have.
Hello from Finland! I would really appreciate opinion/video about small brother of these 1723 speakers. And specially some comparison between 1723 monitor, and 1723 S tower. Thank you for the ultimate content you guys produce.
I really would love to give these speakers a new place in my system. The biggest issue for me and perhaps many others is the "60 day" trial. IF, for some reason they need to be returned, it will cost $360.00 (15% x $2499.00) out of pocket to return these. It's just to much of a hit to give them a try. Arendal needs to set up a distributor in the USA. I really believe their sales would be boosted and more people would try and buy them. So far they have not responded to me. That's a large chunk of money to loose. Arendal, if your reading this, expand you distribution area. This is the only reason I'm holding back on my purchase.
If you're serious,$360.00 for two months of trial time seems fair to me. Even if you have a local supplier you're going to need to put them into your room to insure they'll perform to your expectations.
I'm just teetering on the fence about ordering these! Ah, frustrating.... I want to purchase them for my 2 channel system, that I also use for TV/movies, but mostly music. Bass heavy music like old school hip-hop. I have dual SVS SB3000's, too. I sold my Revel F208's about a year ago and I'm using Emotiva T2's right now. Great speakers for the money, just not very pretty and the tweeter is just a little hot for me. The 1723 Monitor's look like they could really excel with my music and look good doing it! I don't know though, prying my wallet open isn't always easy! Anyone have these in a 2 channel system and can chime in? James Larson, should I go for it?!? Beautiful review as always James! You're a rock star!
It's hard to say how much of an upgrade it would be over your Emotiva speakers, since there is no real information about the T2s anywhere. If it were me, I would go for the Arendal speakers simply because they are a known quantity whereas the Emotivas are an unknown. The Arendal build quality will certainly be a huge step above that of the Emotivas at the very least.
I was getting ready to purchase these, but the center channel is huge and won't fit cabinet in family room. I settled with Monitor Audio Silver 100 and C350, because needed a 3 way center. Hopefully, it sounds good.
@@BOER1717 The MA Silver 100, C350 paired with the SVS SB-3000 sounds amazing in family room. I have SVS Prime Pinnacles, Ultra Center, Prime Elevations, Ultra Bookshelf and Dual SB3000 in main room upstairs. Just running MA Silver 3.1 sounds better then the SVS system. @@BOER1717 A31 is powering LCR and the room is semi treated, carpeted, drapes and a few panels. The upstairs is completely treated and fully carpeted. It might be due to the fact main room above the garage has sloped ceilings and the family room is almost a prefect square.
I've been intrigued by these since Sparechange originally covered them as he owned them in his dedicated setup for awhile. I wonder how these compare to the Monolith series by Monoprice, that are also quite large, THX certified, and are value priced. I'm sure there's a difference in build quality and finish, but I wonder how they stack up in terms of measurements and performance.
I have Arendal and Monolith THX in walls. I use the monolith in ceiling for heights as I thought they’d be a good match for the Arendals, and a nice step up from regular in ceiling. I was impressed with the monolith build quality, and I’ve been very curious what the towers sound like. I think you’d be content either way
@@danielwander605 I have the Monolith 465T towers are I'm totally satisfied. They are smooth sounding and very dynamic and extend low (29hz). I too was impressed by the build quality. I'm sure Arendal put more money into the cabinet finish but that also comes at a cost. I'd be VERY interested to see (hear) how the Monolith 365T compare to the 1723 S (model with 6.5' drivers). At $2k/pair (double the cost), I would expect the 1723's to outperform the Monolith 365's, but by how much? As stand alone speakers, the Arendals can extend much lower when sealed, but add in a sub and crossover at 80hz (recommneded by THX) and I wonder how much of a difference one would see... if any
@@marcusmcmurray77 I agree about the low end. It’s nice to have a speaker that can dig a bit but in a home theater application it probably doesn’t matter that much. Besides build quality and look the only difference is probably the wave guide in the arendal. Not sure if that makes a huge difference or not. I just loved the look of the arendals and like the obscurity of the brand and went with them. However, I’m huge monolith fan: I have the processor, a 7 channel amp, the 4 in wall speakers, and a DAC for a small 2 channel setup. I have no doubt that those towers are performers close to par with the Arendal and other more expensive brands.
How would you rate these and the arendal towers compared to the svs ultra bookshelves and towers? I realize these probably have better performance but I have the svs and was wondering if these were worth the upgrade? The SVS ultras struggle to play reference with clarity. Using my 200 W per front stage xpa 7 amp from Emotiva they can only play up to -14 DB clearly. Would these Arendals play reference with clarity using my xpa 7?
I have a Arendal 1723 2S subwoofer that I added to my system a couple of weeks ago for LFE. I also have a pair of B&W DB1D's which is a similar design. The Arendal sub is as good or better than the B&W's. Very happy!
Really intriguing speaker for my living room in white ( non HT) and my wife’s living room is in white. Only thing is rear port, really messes up bookshelf mounting, and/or n Ed’s to come out into room more from wall, to properly get port away from wall/corner. I wish more speakers/subs would do front porting …unless you have other suggestions Gene . Love the channel. Curtis.
I will have to check out these speakers. I bought my membership to find good quality, but moderately priced speakers! Would you recommend two separates or an AVR with an amp with two tower and two bookshelf speakers, plus a centre, one or two subs, and possibly two height speakers?

Based on the list you have the Arendale by a mile. Klipsch will be bright and non-linear (I know I have had 2 gens of Klipsch) the Focal will lack bottom end, but awesome high end and if pushed hard will sound hollow, likely due to cabinet resonance. The only other speakers close to the Arandale in linearity at this price point are Revel F206 and Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G that I have found.

Do you think 1723 THX monitors + subwoofer is better than 1691 towers + subwoofer? I have an issue with 1961 towers being too short for a bedroom where the bed absorbs half of the sound, so I wonder if I should upgrade the towers with 1723 monitors and what would be the difference?
Wouldn’t towers with lower bass response be pointless because thanks to Gene, we all know that positioning is likely wrong resulting in peaks and dips in all the wrong places?

@@raymondayala5355 how's the SVS sound
Definitely considering them when i save up some.. In the meantime i got sweet polk reserve r200 bookshelves
I think you can't go wrong with the R200's either.
@@SwirlingDragonMist
All I know about mass relative to performance is sensitivity.
"in transduction of electric energy into enjoyable sound, the craftsman wears many hats"
Yep, speaker design, that's his most widely known quote of wisdom.
His rarely known quotes include;
Before embarking on a journey of revenge, first dig two graves.
Would have loved these to be measured as a center aligned horizontally as people would use without AT screens, to see what kind of lobing issues they have.
I'd say they are. Just look at the lateral dispersion as vertical and vice versa, pretty much covers it.
I am considering running three of these vertically behind a acoustically transparent screen. Not a good idea?
@@davemccague222 Vertical alignment is best, so its an absolutely good idea. Unlike horizontal alignment, that always causes many issues.
Thank you sir
Curious how the center channel measures off axis and if there’s significant lobing effects ?
I have the 1723 1 V sub it's phenomenal for music and movies.
Hello from Finland! I would really appreciate opinion/video about small brother of these 1723 speakers. And specially some comparison between 1723 monitor, and 1723 S tower. Thank you for the ultimate content you guys produce.
Do you think theses would pair well with the Denon 110th amp for a 2-channel system? Thanks
I really would love to give these speakers a new place in my system. The biggest issue for me and perhaps many others is the "60 day" trial. IF, for some reason they need to be returned, it will cost $360.00 (15% x $2499.00)
out of pocket to return these. It's just to much of a hit to give them a try. Arendal needs to set up a distributor in the USA. I really believe their sales would be boosted and more people would try and buy them. So far they have not responded to me. That's a large chunk of money to loose. Arendal, if your reading this, expand you distribution area. This is the only reason I'm holding back on my purchase.
dude nobody is gonna return those, if you ordered them you are keeping them :D
I ordered them and have about 50 hours on them. In the first 5 minutes I knew they were NOT going back. Excellent speakers.
Thanks for the review, I’m sure spare change has had these speakers in the past as well. Love your work keep it up!
I have always been a fan of MTM speakers , Thanks Gene !
But would of loved to seen you measured the lsim 703s

How are they compared to Canton vento ?
What is the latest budget bookshelf speaker champ used for surrounds with a nice balanced sound ?
I was getting ready to purchase these, but the center channel is huge and won't fit cabinet in family room. I settled with Monitor Audio Silver 100 and C350, because needed a 3 way center. Hopefully, it sounds good.
How do you like your Silvers?
@@BOER1717 The MA Silver 100, C350 paired with the SVS SB-3000 sounds amazing in family room. I have SVS Prime Pinnacles, Ultra Center, Prime Elevations, Ultra Bookshelf and Dual SB3000 in main room upstairs. Just running MA Silver 3.1 sounds better then the SVS system. I'm hearing things in music I haven't heard before. The wife and I watched The Greatest Showman again and OMG did it sound spectacular.
@@pooter4e552 awesome to hear! What is powering the speakers? And is your family room acoustically treated at all?
@@BOER1717 A31 is powering LCR and the room is semi treated, carpeted, drapes and a few panels. The upstairs is completely treated and fully carpeted. REW's measurements of the family is better then the main room above the garage, which is strange, and has less treatments.
Build quality of the Monoprice would not come close.
And the 10 year warranty on the Arendal that monoprice doesnt give you.
How are the Bookshelves for nearfield use?

Curtis.
They come with port plugs. Arendal shows both ported and plugged measurements on their website.

Wouldn’t towers with lower bass response be pointless because thanks to Gene, we all know that positioning is likely wrong resulting in peaks and dips in all the wrong places?
