I just revived my old steel road bike built in 1996, and there is no doubt, the feel is noticeably smoother both in terms of flex where you want it, and vibration damping. I hadn't ridden it for many years, and it was immediately clear how nice it felt.
Even with 25mm tires on stiff modern wheels, it feels smooth. I used to run 23's on it, and at the time you could still get 19's if you wanted.
Quality steel tubing in the hands of a frame builder who knows how to use it can be amazing.

Love steel. I still have my Trek 930 from 1991 that I adapted for touring. It is a beautiful lugged frame! I upgraded every component over time and it's been to Europe twice along with several long tours of the western US.

I ride a Breezer Inversion with some improvements. Joe Breeze was an early inventor of mountain bikes. His company is now in Northeast Philadelphia. Frame is Japanese cromaly steel with carbon fork. Components are Shimano 105 and GRX, some Integra. The Integra is about $2500.

Great video, Ty. thanks for promoting steel as a serious option. However, you neglected to mention a great company out of the SF Bay area, Soma. I've been riding a Soma Wolverine since 2017 and it's a great bike for gravel and bikepacking. It even has a split rear-stay if you want to use belt drive. Anyone looking into steel should consider looking up Soma.

Sorry, but I disagree. A Gorilla Monsoon frameset, right now, as of 7/10/2021, in a 49 cm can be had for $950. I did not see a Gunnar Cycles' frameset for that price. It's just hard from US manufacturers to compete Taiwanese manufacturers. I'd imagine that the steel tariffs also hurt.

They may be. I know Litespeed and Lynsey are made in Tennessee so maybe they supply Chumba? From my research, it made it sound like Chumba made all their bikes in Texas...I do my best to get facts right and pronounce things correctly but sometimes it's difficult with limited info...

Taiwan is great for steel bicycle production and, even though I am *very* pro “buy American”, I am fine with buying products designed in the US and manufactured in countries that 1) honor copyright and trademark rights, 2) pay good wages and offer good working conditions (Taiwan is one of the best in the world for this BTW), and 3) have quality labor that really doesn’t exist in the US.
