    David, thanks. I have spent hours watching your videos. You have a great way of explaining stuff, and go into all corners of cycling, not just high end carbon. I've been looking to move up from a 15 year old aluminium bike and have been doing a lot of riding in the past six months here in Barbados, but looking for something to make it easier for an older guy and in our temperatures. Your videos cover everything necessary for the journey of buying a bike - to the point where I've disappeared down the worm hole and come up thinking it's time to invest in "the final bike", which appears to be titanium! Your videos covered all of it and I think I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a UK-made titanium. Thanks for your great, informative videos that don't look down on us plebs

    Love your reviews Dave.
    They are so in-depth.
    That's a really nice build with some lovely detailing,with the big knobbly tyres you probably get loads of comfort and control off road.
    Not sure if I can get my head round riding a drop bar off road again!
    I tried it in 2006 failed miserably on the Ridgeway!
    Drop bar bikes have evolved since then.
    You haven't just got one option of a cyclo cross bike as your review has shown. 👍

    Hi David thanks for posting this. I think this is a very strong contender for my next bike. Currently riding a 2016 CAADX which will eventually give out and when that happens I'll be looking for a good steel frameset, endurance geometry and wide tire clearences. The annoying thing is they keep changing the disc brake mounting standards so my post-mount spyres will probably have to be kept for something else.

    Great review David. I completely agree with your comments about the fun and freedom of riding a machine like this just about anywhere you want! I have a blue Secan too with Ultegra RX! Am running the 48/32 Praxis chainset and have swapped to an 11-40 cassette. I now have two wheelsets: one with 700x40 Gravelking slick tyres for road and towpaths/bike trails and one with 650B x47 Teravail Rutlands for the mucky stuff! (Both plush tubeless). @@CaptainShiny5000 For decades, bike companies have not used shifter housing on the down tube. For good reason. Full housing makes shifting spongy. But exposed cables clog with mud. Bike companies do, of course, run full hydraulic brake housing. Perhaps you are confusing the two? The Fairlight Secan runs exposed gear cables on the downtube. Came into this review accidentally, and want to ask, how you will compare it to the 2021 Diverge you reviewed? (admittedly, the 'regular' carbon versions, e.g. 'Expert' - rather than the super S-Works build you've reviewed...) as a 'do it all' bike? (playing in the flowy trails in the forest with one wheelset, and playing sprinting games with friends on tarmacs..)
    The concept f a steel bike is so appealing, but I do wonder if some of the 'happiness' or 'puppy-ness' of the bike is lost due to the sturdier frame and the longer chainstays; then again - the steel is springy... maybe it's playful enough?
    Thanks for all these great reviews; it's a delight to watch!
    P.S.
    I recommend trying the Lauf Smoothie handlebar. Reasonable flare, and super comfortable.

    Be honest, when was the lasts time you rode in the drops offroad? Wouldn't a flat bar gravel bike make so much more sense? (Mainly for better braking experience - better grip with a flat bar, brakes are opporated with your fingertips/no wrist twisting like road hoods, and the brakes/bar are wide to provide stability on harsh decents).

    Hi David! Congratulations for a superb build and thank you for creating this wonderful content for us all to enjoy. Really value you sharing your experience from trying out all these bikes and all these components.
    Really clicked when i saw your series about the Fairlight! I was also looking for my next gravel / adventure bike.
    As you also tested the diverge (that i currently ride), i was very curious to hear your opinion about:
    - what’s the overall comfort like front/back compared to something like the Diverge?
    - the Diverge has the future shock and CGR seatpost, any way to build a fairlight to similar levels of comfort?
    - how do you compare the two geometry wise
    Cheers & Enjoy your bikes & rideing 😊

    • @davidarthur
      @davidarthur  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for the positive feedback it means a lot! I loved the Diverge and it definitely provides a smoother ride than the Secan, the Future Shock works so well in rough tracks providing both more comfort and more control. I actually used the CGR seatpost on my Secan for a while and it made a difference, but upset the aesthetics so I swapped it. I’m really tempted to try a Redshift suspension stem on my Fairlight

    • @alext4327
      @alext4327 4 года назад +1

      david arthur Thank you for the feedback! Really curious how that would work, as the Redshift and Futureshock seem to work in different movement planes, will closely follow-up your Fairlight series for info on that if you get to try it :-) In terms of geometry, how would you compare the two?

    • @alext4327
      @alext4327 4 года назад +1

      Also another thought... Would an aluminum build of the Diverge (with future shock and CGR) stand a chance comfort wise against the Secan and it’s wonderful steel frame? Sometimes carbon is not a choice, wondering how far these modern aluminum frames have made it...

    • @davidarthur
      @davidarthur  4 года назад +1

      That's a tricky comparison to talk about. I think the 20mm of suspension from the Future Shock would definitely add a lot of comfort and make it likely smoother than the Secan through the handlebars at least. Modern alloy frames are much better than they used to be and nowhere near as harsh as 10-20 years ago

  • @GerardCantor
    @GerardCantor 3 года назад

    You mention that it's a bike to get back to the essence of cycling and not about the KOM's or personal bests, but this bike looks like it would be more than capable of keeping up with its carbon-fiber counterpart, especially after a few hours of riding, where the rider on the carbon bike is likely more rattled and the one on the steel Fairlight is a bit more energetic since the steel would have absorbed a great deal of vibrations.

    Hi David, thanks for the great video! Your enthusiasm for this bike and the design touches by Dom at Fairlight are clear to see. You’ve really brought this company to my attention and if I can save enough a Fairlight would be nailed on as my bike of choice and your videos have helped with that given your praise of their bikes. I think that if a bike reviewer buys a bike with their own money that speaks volumes! Can I just ask a question (but you don’t have to answer if it’s too personal) but how tall are you and what frame size did you go for a did you go for the regular or tall frame geometry option? In my fantasy money no object world I’d have both a Strael (especially in the new orange colour) plus a Secan. But in the real world where even one of these bikes would be a dream I’d struggle to choose between the two. Most of my riding is on road but it’s on lots of county lanes. My heart says if I could I should go for an orange Strael just because most of my riding is on road. But my head says Secan because of the greater flexibility of tyre sizes, wheel sizes etc. even if my off road forays are rare. Anyway thanks for the video and keep up the great work!

    Most gravel bikes right now have toe overlap. I looked at the front to center on this bike. No different than others. All builders have to do is change the 72 degree head angle to 71 and you don’t get toe overlap on that switchback right when you are trying to put a power pedal stroke down. If you ride straight gravel roads it’s fine. In SoCal I don’t.

    Beautiful bike. When a bike reviewer puts his own money down on a review bike it's quite a statement. I"m considering getting a frame and doing a custom build. Question for you. Does this bike frame plane for you? By that I mean is there enough positive flex in the frame. I'm built like you 70 kg and 178 cm. Most mass produced frames are overbuilt for my weight and don't plane for me. I've been mostly riding carbon frames which are light and stiff. I'm hoping to experience the planing effect without having to do a customer frame. The Fairlight Secan seems like a good candidate. BTW how much does your overall build weigh without the pedals?

    Torn between this and the Cotic Escapade with 1x GRX and a couple of sets of wheels to cover all my riding. At just about 5'10 the Fairlight size guide suggests a 56R but that looks very long on the geo charts. And the 54R looks a bit small - how tall are you and what size did you go for? The Cotic splits the difference size-wise but think it still has a QR rear.

      Nothing to worry about with the hanger, steel is strong and bent hangers can easily be bent back. Replaceable hangers were developed for carbon frames which tend to snap in this area in a crash

      I just like the ride quality of steel, it’s difficult to put into words. Not too stiff and rides the bumps well. For sheer performance carbon is hard to beat and the Future Shock will deliver a smoother front end feel than the Fairlight

    You have tried many wheelsets, do you finds there to be a big difference between a carbon wheelset and let's say a very nice aluminium one, like the Hunt you have on now?
    Some people recommend pairing a steel frame with carbon wheels.

    • @davidarthur
      @davidarthur  4 года назад +1

      I don’t think the difference is as noticeable on this sort of bike with big low pressure tyres and riding off-road. I don’t feel the allot Hunt’s are struggling in any way, and I’m a light rider. Can see the stiffness benefits if you want a bit more directness in the handling

      You talk a lot about how great this frame is for gravel and adventure and I agree but with the small irritation of my flexible fork during some climbs/springs, this bike replaced my carbon endurance roadbike as well (I went with a 2x mechanical Ultegra with a RX rear derailleur and swap to a deepsection wheelset for road).
