That's why she describes "velvet curtain drawn, flowers at your feet" (e.g. that's the description of a funeral). And when she says "When every detail is over the guardrail", it's probably because the car hit the guardrail. The "earthquake" is probably a metaphor for the experience of losing her father.

I feel that the song actually transports us to the experiences she had as a child, riding in the car with her father right after the actual earthquake hit. And the very beginning of the song vividly depicts that. But later on, the song fast-forwards several years to the events surrounding her father's death, and I think the earthquake and the events afterwards start to become a metaphor. There's this huge feeling of flashbacks and flash-forwards and things folding in around themselves in the song emotionally, and it feels like a very complex, yet also a very visceral punch-to-the-gut world that Molly navigates here so bravely. But it wouldn't be nearly as great without such a formidable band injecting that much life and passion to an already great song. The performance is excellent, and the only minor flaw really is that the guitars are mixed a bit too low, so they lack the bite of the studio version.
