I'm so glad you did a movie reaction to this. I relate to your roommate so much. I hesitated watching this when I first read about the plot because I can't bare to see a child get hurt but there were so many people raving about it that it peaked my curiosity. I still was so scared to watch it but I eventually did and yes, I was terrified for Finney the entire time and on the edge of my seat worrying if he'd make it out safely but by the end of the film I was so moved by the movie, I had tears in my eyes...happy tears, relieved tears...seeing that Finney got out ok and was reunited with his sister Gwen who never gave up looking for him. Rarely do you have a horror film with so much heart to it. The close bond between Finney and Gwen was so beautiful & so was the original idea of having the ghosts of the previous boys who were killed by The Grabber, helping Finney to get justice & be able to move on to heaven after The Grabber was finally defeated. I loved Finney's character arc as well. He started off a timid boy who would never stand up for himself or his sister and in the end he was the one that had the courage to put an end to The Grabber's terror. I was so glad I decided to watch it because now I know I would have missed out on such a well-made horror film with a great story and phenomenal acting from the two lead kids and Ethan Hawke. This movie left an impact on me that I still think about it long after I have watched it and I've watched it numerous times. I loved your roommate's reactions to it. She was so sweet worrying so much about Finney's safety. She tensed up so much during the scenes where it looked like Finney could be in danger. She's going to be a great mother in the future. Little to late but still wanna put in my opinion. Basically I'd like to say that the masks sort of represented a side to the Grabber. The smiling one was the charismatic and charming guy. This refers to real serial killers. They are often perceived as charismatic and charming, most serial killers like John Wayne Gacy or Ted Bundy weren't seen as monsters. The other side of the mask with the frown was the murderous and dark side to the Grabber. Like real serial killers they all had another side to them, that dark and murderous type. When the mask was torn off of the Grabber you can see he becomes physically distraught. It's his true form. He no longer is hiding behind the mask and that moment he is truly himself. The mask and his actions aren't separate now. I'd also like to say in the original short story the mask was actually a clown mask, all the more disturbing in my opinion. Great movie overall, I will say it does fledge out the meaning of the original piece. The original story though had bits that sank in more. Like then the Grabber calls Finney Johnny, it kind of just sits weird in the movie like a nickname but in the story his name was Johnny Finney. He knew his name long before he told him. You also got to get inside Finn's head and know what he was thinking. Great movie and story. 10/10.
The clown mask would have turned me off the movie. That trope is overused in horror movies. This mask style was new. It makes it more uniquely rememberable. But I like that symbolism you noted. The mask change was noticeable enough for people to think there was split personality involved.
That old movie "Diabolique something ". It's been remade a few times. They gave the woman a heart attack by scaring her to death when they knew she had a severe heart disease.
I have to fast forward the abuse scene every time it's so hard to watch poor Gwen. It's almost like Finn and Gwen were facing worse demons than this creep and it made them both work together. The seventies and eighties were so creepy for abductions and murders.
When I was a kid back in my old school, a bully keeps on pulling my hair all the time. I wish I could cut it, but it keeps on growing back. It took three years for my hair to grow back.
I hate when people use pits as the aggressive dog, I worked with dogs and some of the sweetest and best trained services dogs I ever meet where Pit or pit mixes also the sweetest dogs I pet sat where pits

That is definitely worth a reaction. Good old William Castle and his promotional gimmicks.
