    What to Expect on our Channel:
    Tiny Hilltop is the digital life-form of Nate and Evan's journey toward food self-sufficiency. Videos will include organic gardening, greenhouse gardening, and starting an orchard using permaculture concepts when possible. We hope that our videos can bring the peace and tranquility we feel when growing food amongst the trees. We would be honored if you chose to follow along on our journey!
    Tiny Hilltop Background:
    Nate has been dealing with chronic health issues for over a decade. The worst of it starting in 2011, taking me from 200lbs to 150lbs in a few months. He was mostly bedridden, requiring a wheelchair to leave the house for nearly three years. Liver and immune issues caused him to develop a sensitivity to chemicals. That started his journey towards living remotely, designing a non-toxic tiny house, growing his own food, and attempting to be as self sustainable as possible. Starting in 2020, Evan, will be doing most of the heavy lifting but Nate will still be involved with planning and production of videos.

    I absolutely love the presentation you've given on how you did it. You seem like you'd rather just either be listening to some lofi or the birds and working in the sun, but you've given us a tutorial instead. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but man, it's super refreshing to see someone who knows how to work take the time to share a bit of the information in his head.

    Yes, this is on my list to build I need something quick and easy. I mentor at-risk youth 7-18 and when I have them in the garden area it works wonders. We have been working on the Harbor Freight Green House and it's not that easy and I need something like this or bigger because of the summer camp program. Thanks, you made it look easier than the one we're doing.

    Well I just read some of your story. I also deal with chronic illness which is part of why I've been looking at doing some gardening and stuff. I would give anything to have my own little place. Currently renting I have good credit hopefully it happens soon LOL. I've also dealt with chronic health issues though that flare up and leave me unable to work any type of full-time job. I like to work on arts and crafts and I always found gardening soothing. I really appreciate your videos thank you for sharing!

    Looks awesome! I’m planning on making a greenhouse to start seeds in. Debating on if I want to build something like this or get a frame with double wall poly panels. How well does this retain heat/how insulted does is stay at night when the temp outside is low?

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  6 лет назад +3

      Thank you. Double wall poly panels would be really nice. Today was 55 and sunny and I put a fan in there to cool it down when it reached 80. I haven't checked at night. We are still getting down into the 20s so they go below freezing. I am going to use these to grow veggies that can handle some frost.

      Water & heat for a greenhouse are challenging. We had a very small greenhouse for growing seedlings. From January - April, we used electric heat on a thermostat to keep it around 45° at night. It never cost more than $25 a month. I filled milk jugs for watering purposes. It worked great. But the door has worn off, & we haven't replaced it.

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  4 года назад

      I had this plastic that is why it isn't seamless around the ends. But, this spring I am going to put 1 sheet on. It basically boils down to width, which is length of hoops pre bend plus around 5' for safety. Then length plus height of ends x 2 plus wiggle room. For this hoophouse I will use 25 x 35, it is 12 x 19' ish.

    For us that is thinking of building a green house, I have some questions. why did you cut many times in those boards. what were you doing at the end of the green house. I am new a this and I will doing this by myself. so I have been surfing the internet on how to build a green done by a woman. What would be the easiest and safest and have a sturdy way of building the green house. I have found some good idea. At least you should how to build a door. now I need to see how to build the rest like a window. it was a great show.

      He made all those cuts to make it easier to chisel out the wood for his lap joint on the door frame.

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  4 года назад

      The cuts were for a lap joint for the door, but you could build it another way. At the end I was using wiggle wire to attach the plastic to the hoops. The easiest way is probably buying a kit and putting it together. I have never done that. They usually tend to be a little more pricey and smaller.

      I did talk about it but it was during a wind gust. Still learning the ins and outs of filming outdoors. I am going to build another one shortly, and make that video more of a step by step. I was in a little hurry to get this one up. Thanks for watching!
      I used this for locks and wiggle wire.

      I attached the locks using 3/4" self tapping screws.

      ooops, link to plastic is actually a duplicate of the wiggle wire. I'm looking to use a hoop house for my chickens in the winter (a hoop coop). I like the idea of them being able to scratch around when it is freezing. The place where we are getting a LGD wants to sell us a greenhouse for $$$$. I am leaning towards a much smaller one, or multiple ones like you are building. I subscribed :)

      Sorry about that Brenda. Yes, I like the idea of them scratching in the winter where I will plant in the spring, too. Thanks for subscribing :)

      @@TinyHilltop thank you :-) I'm actually debating right now about whether I should build some basic raised boxes inside before i continue on with the structure. Someone suggested hilling up the beds inside but I feel that I will have a lot of soil migration when I start watering throughout the season so sides may be needed to hold the soil in place. Thoughts?

    • @TinyHilltop
      @TinyHilltop  4 года назад +1

      I am a fan of disrupting the soil as little as possible. I would build some beds and mulch them heavily then let the soil build up some organic matter.

      Hi Nate,.. So yesterday I decided to build some raised beds inside the structure before I finish building it as Im still waiting for some building supplies to arrive. I'm in zone 3b in sudbury & soil here is very rocky, sandy and clayey so it had to be amended with lots of triple mix. I will be adding in my own compost as well throughout the season. It's lots of work to grow here & its a short growing season but I still feel compelled to do this work all my life no matter where I live.
