Bryan wrote - Glade for your support. Just some more info on my knife. It is a design from Marv Kaisersatt's book Caricature Heads which is available from Chris Whillock in Faribault MN 507-339-0336 (mention my name if you order). The blade is made by Bob Dubanoski in Texas bobdubski@yahoo.com, the handle is made of oak and is shaped to the way I use the knife with notches in it for the way I make some cuts, the end of the handle is hollowed out to put in lead for weight and balance. I do not sell them. Have a great day, Bryan

I'll be. I received two cutouts just like this and it wasn't explained to me what they were. I assumed it was a miniature person w/ the larger part being the body and the smaller part being the head. Thus, I started hacking away at it and I carved Frank.

Hi there, I am a follower of Marv Kaisersatt. He is the best of the best when it comes to caricature carving. I recommend his book. 'Creating Caricature Heads' - it is a step-by-step guide to heads and faces. I use his design ideas and methods for the most part (with a few other carver's ideas as well). The book is available through Chris Whillock in Faribault MN. The wood size is 1.5 X 1.5 inches. Have fun...Bryan

Hello Cynthia, I teach in a class room setting and have made patterns from a book by Marv Kaisersatt - Caricature Heads Designing and Carving and is available from Chris Willock at 507-339-0336 or woodcarverwarehouse.com in Faribault MN. Mention my name to Chris (Bryan Middleton, just so he knows I am still on the green side - smile). Marv is a good friend of many years and his book is the very best I have ever seen for a carver. I use a several different manufacturers for my tools and I recommend that you buy the best tools you can afford. It is better to buy one good tool then five that you have to continually take the time to sharpen. Most of my tools are Stubai, Flexcut, and Swiss Made palm tools. All of these have beginner sets of 5-6 tools that will get you started on the right foot.
Welcome to the wonderful world of carving,
      Bryan

Good day, I teach mostly from patterns designed by the Caricature Carvers of America. The 'head' is by Marv Kaisersatt who has long since been my mentor. I suggest you buy his book CARICATURE HEADS in Wood and on Paper - Designing and Carving. It is available from Chris Willock a 507-339-0336. Marv and his book is the best of the best. Mention my name to Chris.
      Have fun carving...Bryan

Excellent! 67 and just getting started. Got knives and basswood. Expecting my carvers gloves today. What is the material on the thumb of yours? I've watched MANY tutorials where people freehand into the wood but can't get how they visualise the object inside the block to know the end proportions. The problem seems to me that we have to remove NEGATIVE wood shapes to reveal the positive shape of the subject inside which is counter intuitive! When drawing/painting etc you're adding material to form shapes. I can see this being a VERY long learning curve LOL. ATB from the UK.

Good day Pete...I have been out of commission due to a cancer operation and I am just getting back to my new normal (smile). The material on my glove thumb is a leather guard glued on - it saves my Kevlar glove as I push the tools with that finger. As far as 'seeing' the finished carving in the block of wood, one day I could not but the next day I could. I cannot teach this, but it does come with practice. Have a great day (from across the pond). Bryan

Wow, Sorry to hear of your troubles. Hope your on full steam soon. Thanks too for the reply. As you say, somethings cant be taught. I can see my newly acquired gloves being worth there salt as i bled twice while inspecting my new knives lol. Didn't have the glove on!!!!! Now i've been initiated its off we go. Made a guard for my knife hand thumb now too. ATB from the UK.

Hi Joan, I think I already answered this one. I make my own knives from scratch, but I can recommend a good knife made by Bob Dubanoski in Texas bobdubski@yahoo.com. His blades are the best I have found and he puts on a nice cigar shaped handle. Mention my name and he will send you the same shaped blade that I use. Bryan

Good evening Vaughn, I assume you were viewing the video on carving a caricature head. All the videos are taken during one of my teaching classes, so any handout for patterns are given out during the class. However all my videos are taken from books or patterns from well known carvers - I get their permission first. The 'head' one is from a good friend, Marv Kaisersatt. His book Caricature Heads Designing and Carving is available from Chris Willock at 507-339-0336 or woodcarverwarehouse.com in Faribault MN. It is the very best book I have ever seen for a carver.
