I have a weird disease where I cannot throw away lumber. I always think, “well, that could be a shim” or “I can use this to stake up a plant in the garden” or “I can use this on a bird house” or whatever. It is hard to throw out wood. I always can think of a use, and I do use it sooner or later
Good way to show how to break down a large piece and the resulting cost per piece. Last weekend was the first trip of the season to our cabin in the high country. I grabbed a piece of aspen from the rack, brought home and cut into 1 in. It carved as nice as basswood. We have nearly 300 acres of aspen, my wood costs just dropped substantially.
Thats actually a really cheap chunk of wood compared to uk prices! I reckon about triple that cost for lime that size in my local UK sawmill (and getting thick blocks is near impossible too - thickest I can get is three inches). Maybe I should emigrate to Canada and cite ‘basswood accessibility’ as my reasons 😂😂😂 Great video as always Doug 👍
Yes Stu, as well as the cost, which in my mind is expensive here in the UK, we don’t have any choice regarding quality of the basswood as our Canadian friends do. From what I understand where the tree grows plays an important part of its hardness. Yes the sharpness of the tool is important of course but when I see carvers cutting into wood more easily than I can, using my Flexcut knives, I think it’s because it is a softer wood, just my opinion of course. Some wood even comes from China, apparently.
I concur!!! Ridiculously expensive here in the UK!
@@boblawrence5011 A bit of research shows American Basswood has an average weight of 27 pounds per cubic foot, European lime’s average weight is 34 pounds per cubic foot. So ours is a bit denser.
Agree - yes, move ASAP! ; )
Yep. Agree with all this. Am in the UK but was in Canada a couple of years ago for some weeks and was doing some carving in my downtime. The basswood there is something else - I too was able to do Doug-sized cuts out of it, which is impossible with the lime we get here. I was beginning to think he was superhuman! Ps there are 2 species - the European one Tilia Europea (lime/linden) is much harder than the US Tilia Americana (basswood)
Great DIY infomercial, thanks! That’s insane - 11¢ each!! I have a friend who has a second home in Michigan that apparently has “all the basswood I want” on it. I turned him down initially. About to make a call and change that order!! 😅
Loving the 1x1 series! I had a grain split on a project I was working on March 28 that cost me 10 stitches. Once I get the feeling back in my index finger I’ll have some catching up to do.
Thanks again for taking the time to get this content out to us.
I was extremely fortunate to score some, very rough, free basswood 1x7x36" planks at a recent woodcarving show in Wisconsin! Wow, buzzed up on the table saw creates soooo many 1x1 sticks! What a fun size to carve....and display around the house...
❤ Thank you Doug Linker !!!
:) :) :)
Loving your 1x1 series. Started watching you when I got sick and you’re right it’s a great hobby. Good way to keep your mind busy while healing, Much better now. I’ve whittled every piece you put out. Starting 1x1 series now. Thanks Doug
I love the 1x1 series 🤤
Love watching the 1x1 series.
Compared to pine lumber that block seems expensive, but it works out so cheap when you cut it up. Not to mention all the hours of enjoyment you get from it. You’re right that it really is a great, fun , rewarding, challenging and cheap hobby. I love it too ! Thanks for all your tutorials. I really appreciate it Doug.
Nice job Doug! You lead the pack of carvers on RUclips for sure. For those who collect/save their carving chips - or should be, here's an idea; I have purchased hand carved fish decoys and the carver 'packed' the fish with chips (aka 'dunnage') to protect it and to add to the hand carved experience. Great concept. The idea is to save the chips from our 'cheap material' hobby and when you sell one, use the chips to use as packing dunnage to help protect it and promote our hoppy/experience. This allows us to use the wood, chips, etc. and even drive costs lower!!!!! ; ) Cheers everyone.
Maybe it's just me because of the tune your playing but if you were really listening to it during cutting I'd say your having too much fun. Your tunes are perfect for each episode and most unusual for RUclips. 😅😅
That's an amazing reason to buy a second hand bandsaw.
Thanks Doug! 👍👍👍🤩🤩🤩💯💯💯
Doug, your videos were the first I started watching which got me into carving, so thanks to you. Because of your excellent way of explaining as you go along, you take the trouble to show your progress to camera.
Gooood evening from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great night!
Very nice education video, Doug. I would never have guessed the final cost for each piece...amazing.
The wood is so cheap, compared to my carving knife collection obsession !!! Great Vid.
Just another reason why carving is a great hobby! Thanks for the experiment Doug!
How many people spend half the video just looking at the tools in the background of Doug's shop?
I love how you carve woods
This is a big reason why I was excited when you announced the 1"x1" series. It hurts alot less when I screw up a 1"x1" x2" carving vs a 3"x3"x6" lol. Great Video Doug!!!
Not a carver myself but Bob's expression "happy accidents" comes to mind. Is that applicable?
Would love to get my hands on something like that in the UK. Many hours of carving.
Hey Doug - thanks for this video (and all your others - I've been binging all the informational ones and keeping the project ones in a list for later). I haven't got a bandsaw but I do have a 10-inch job site table saw (and a chop saw to cut lengths). I know the thickness of the blade will turn more of my big block to dust - but I'm now very excited to visit the mill near me and find out how much they're charging for basswood.
Thats wild, I need to find a place that sells basswood other than online. Keep up the good work brother!
How many people will learn or be inspired by .15 cents! Thats amazing Doug and that is priceless. Thanks for all you do Doug.
I just bought a bunch of 1x1 12 sticks just for your videos! Lol
Now this is a fun video. And you are so right, what can a person do for a couple hours for 10 or 15 cents?
Also a BIG fan of your 1x1 series... great stuff. Thx for puttin' it out there
I love the lighthearted music as you speed up the cutting of the pieces!
Nice buck back there on the wall!
Shipping for a lot of us is more than the wood itself
Oh I’m aware but doesn’t have to be Basswood only
Hysterically funny. You should have a guessing game beforehand 😂😂😂
When I started watching you a year and a half ago, I went out to find some Basswood at my local lumber shop. (No sawmill nearby, but a really good dedicated lumber store. Lots of unique pieces as well as the usual suspects). I found 2 six foot lengths of 2"x6" Basswood for $25 each. Both were poker straight with super straight long grain. I didn't count how many blocks it turned into, but it was a lot. So cheap.
Great job! You are such wonderful inspiration! Keep them coming, please!!
Doug, thanks for the entertainment...it is so worth the money even if you have to get your wood in smaller quantities!!! I've done lots of different craft/hobbies and this is the best!! 🪵🔪😅
As always…a fun and positive video.
You are one of the best out there on Utube!
Thanks so much for helping all of us.
Great content as always. Thanks, Doug!
Well now we can all looking forward to 252 small carving tutorials! 👍👍😀😀
Great video and great lesson on how, with a bit of labour, a person can make a hobby economical!
Thanks for continuing to educate & inspire
I just love your enthusiasm. 👍
Love the new look hair and beard cut.
Good one Doug, entertaining and original !! Hello from Canada
Great video as always. Thank you kindly.
I really love your "Prince Albert" box for drill bits 🤣
Thanks Doug. 👍😁
I get my Bass wood at Manards for $10 for a piece 1.5”x3x10”. Sometimes I cut it with my back blade hand saw. I should go cut down the Basswood tree in my backyard but from what I’ve read I don’t think I’m prepared to process that many blocks. The tree is huge tho , I’d never have to look for wood again .
Great video Doug! Many do not realize how many you can.
That was pretty cool. Thanks Doug.
Thank you , Mr Doug .
🐺
And I did get a kick out of it...Good on Ya for this series.
I am brand new to whittling with a Beaver Craft knife (which I struggle to get a good edge on) and find these clips helpful and fun to watch (love the dramatic pause and look at the camera when you are doing the math!) So, just good on ya buddy.
Thank You, Doug!
Thanks for that information 👍. That's a great bottom line!!!
Doug dang thats a big block of wood great content dude greetings from uk 👍🇬🇧🐾🦊😏
Brilliant Doug. I would almost bet on a year's worth of carving the blocks you make rather than buying blocks from a craft store you almost can buy a cheap band saw. Love this vid
Outstanding video Doug, what fun you had. Lol, keep up the great work my friend.
I'm glad you made this video. I was going to buy a piece of bass wood online that was 10" x 4" x5" and it costs 37 us dollars. I felt like that was a lot for such a small chunk of wood. I'm in California and I don't know if I can buy bass wood from a mill but now I'm going to check. Thanks
great vid - love the new look too.
You're sooo right!! And even if folks don't have the tools: I buy mine in 1x1x12, and then cut to length. I'm sure i paid a little more than 11 cents but still a very small price per piece. Thanks again for this series. Perfect size for my smaller hands, and when I mess up too much, I just start all over with another piece of cheap wood.
Thank you for sharing the video take care.
Thank you, Doug
Hey Doug, I appreciate the work you do. I've been watching a while and you're just a swell content creator.
Enjoyed this video, thats a lot of wood.
Going to the US and Canada next year think I will be filling the case with a block of basswood on the return. Duty free is so over rated🤣.
Basswood costs a fortune in the UK and quality is poor from the local craft shop. Thanks again for sharing. Love all your videos. 😍🏴
Now this is amazing.
Great video.. puts it into perspective
Love it. A no-brained idea and demonstration. This video is worth a double wow wow: WOW WOW!!🎉🎉
Awesome Doug.
That WAS fun! Thanks.
That is super cheap for having an amazing time doing your hobby. Thanks for the video Doug.
I recently cut up and sorted my wood into different sizes. Meantime I am still working on my 1x1 woodland gang! I think we need a skunk, hedgehog and a fox to the collection 💁🏼♀️
I can't wait for the video of what you're going to carve in the scrap! We all have offcuts like that floating around. The "mouse doors" were a good use of thin larger pieces, but these are thin sticks.
Look like little fish to me
Hey Doug, I'm lovin your 1x1 tutorials. I've hunted everywhere in New Zealand and unfortunately we simply don't have the option to buy Basswood in a larger slab type form.
Cheapest I've found is 6x peices" @ 50mm x 25 x 25mm (2×1x1") which cost me $36.00 NZ ($6.00 @ peice NZ) which comverts to around $58.16 / $9.70 a peice US that's insane!
Told my wife I'm going to start pruning our fruit trees haha.
Due to our importation laws were not allowed to purchase from overseas without a license due to our strict infestation risk to our export tree/food industry so I might even try pine cause I can buy a full 6meter length of that for less than the $36 I paid for 6x little peice. Crazy
Anyway thanks for posting awesome informative videos. Peace ✌️
Love it well done sir
That's pretty darn cute!
Fun video Doug!
That makes this an absolutely Crazy cheap hobby.
And a tonne of fun!!
Can I ask where you bought the block?
I've switched almost entirely to Aspen (aka quakie aspen) because it carves almost as well as bass. The only thing I have found is that hardness varies from bark to heart. The closer to the heart the harder. But it is free for the taking here in Utah where I live and according to the USDA Forest Service grows all over Canada. Give it a go and let me know.
My wife has this species of tree all over her native land. I plan on chopping down a few trees and letting them dry for whittling. It needs to be thinned out on her family's land anyway. Can't wait to venture out that way again.
Good tips I kinda have to stick to art/wood /tool budget so buying a big chunk with many carves in mind is a better buy. Thanks Doug.
Look at those stacks! I was curious many little guys were living in there too lol
Great visual Doug! I learned a couple years ago how to turn a .50 cent foam brush handle into $80! 😁 Ain't this a great hobby! 😄
Hey Doug, fun video. You should try buying a piece of wood that size in the Uk. You could double the price easy.
That's impressive! And I was happy with my eBay pieces!! Maybe next go I'll try this
The no beard nearly got me Doug. I though an impostor had stolen your channel mate.
couldn't help but laugh when you read the total price for each carving 😂 best hobby in the world.
Like you style. New subscriber. I am in Western Australia. No bass wood here so have to buy. If I keep my carving small it will be affordable. Thankyou.
Hi, I live in Vancouver island and love your videos, I have learned a lot with your tutorials. Thanks. I do have a question, where is a good place to buy basswood here in Canada? Thanks again.
Right on!
Hi Doug, I also live in Ontario. May I ask the name of the sawmill you acquired it from? your 1 x 1 series is what got me interested in wood carving. Thank You!
Thanks for the great lesson Doug .. Teaches us about savings and just think ? Suppose you decide to sell each piece for maybe $10 ..you make $2,500 on a $37.50 piece of wood ..Not bad
Cool video! I only recently got a bandsaw, before that I would have had to do that by hand. Still doable, but a good workout (yeah, I could need that).
Inspiring teacher 👌
Love it!
You got more out of there than i thought, great video
Very informative and absolutely true! Anybody know what band saw used?
Raising that thumbnail game! Fun demo!
If you use a longer stick, you can carve it's top and keep your hands safer, then keep going to the next carving on the same stick..
Hi Doug, I just love your videos, it is great to see someone out in the wilderness enjoying the beautiful Canadian countryside and lakes. Your carving has inspired me to get on with my work and enjoy the relaxing nature of a piece of wood. I have difficulty finding basswood that is easy to carve like yours, can you tell me where I could get something like you showed on this latest video. I live just east of Toronto and travel to Kitchener/Waterloo quite often. Any help would be much appreciated.
Hi Maurice you can try Hoffmeyer's planing mill in Seabringville Oliver
You are awesome!
Wish it was that cheap here in the UK
I still have a block of bass wood I bought from Woodcraft a couple years ago. It's 3x3 and 12 inches long. I paid 11.50 for it back then. So it looks like I'll get 54 1x2 blocks out of it that averages out near .21 cents each. The blocks will be a little smaller than 1x2 since my saw blade will take up about 1/8. Oh well, still a fun project.
Jack Price would approve! Cheers.
