    Learn how to play the one finger mandolin chord. I learned this technique from Wayne Benson. It´s the open A5 chord that I use all the time. So do other modern players like Chris Thile, Sam Bush, Mike Marshall etc. Here I will show you the secret trick!

    I fret the A and E notes on the G and D strings. It might be confusing how I try to explain it in words.

    Thank you! I was following a lesson from someone else and all they said was "bar down" for A chord. This secret was very helpful.

    Thanks for this video. I was not aware of this technique. I've been playing that A chord with two fingers. That can result in some fret buzz on the G strings if the first finger isn't placed just right on my standard mandolin and is a real problem on my octave mandolin. The one finger method takes care of that problem, as well as freeing up a finger. Good stuff.

    I like this lesson and will use this. I have played the A chord before but worried that I was not getting all four strings of the two fingers. Now I am not worried. Also, I didn't realize the versatility of muting with the other fingers. Finally, I found out I could use the open top two strings, then the A chord with one finger and then the C chord on fifth fret, the B on fourth, the Bb on third, the A on 2nd. It sounded like I was playing a Black Sabbath song I just discovered is easy on Mandolin by learning this lesson of yours. I think the song is War Pigs.

    Thanks! This really helped me. My fingers aren't wide enough to fret both string pairs successfully, but they are too large to use two fingers (one per string). This will take some getting used to, but it is very helpful. I am glad I found this tutorial. Thanks so much!

    Sent some $$ to your donation about a week ago....Your lessons are really good..Down to earth..great tips and tricks and just enough theory to make basic sense of it all. Yes the one finger chording and mute is something ALL mandolin players need to have in their bag of tricks. GREAT lessons..thanks Magnus!

    Magnus, I recently discovered (since February this year) the great instrument that the Mandolin is. I also just started listening to your videos. I am impressed with your precision and effort to communicate and teach properly. I really liked the strumming rhythm at the beginning of the above video. Do you actually have a dedicated video to teach these syncopated rhythms (slightly Funk style) for Mandolin/ Thanks again for your dedication. Giorgio

    • @MandolinSecrets
      @MandolinSecrets  6 лет назад +1

      Experiment with placement and angle. It might work if you give it some time.

    • @audreycoeckelberghs3855
      @audreycoeckelberghs3855 6 лет назад

      Thanks for your answer! I'll try some more. For now i can hardly press both inner strings at the same time, my fingers are really thin. :/ But i do manage just pressing my whole phalanx on both double strings. The effect is the same i think, but i guess it's not great for the articulation so i try not to do it too much.

    This is like a modified powerchord... You can play that all the way up the fretboard.
