    This was recorded several years ago Jerry, and in 2024, it is still the best I have seen. You are an excellent teacher as well as a master luthier. I Enjoy watching and learning from your videos.

    Some really good information in this short video. When he was discussing 7th chords the camera angle prevented me from seeing exactly what Jerry was doing with his fretting hand. I had to watch the video again before I felt I understood what about switching to a 7th chord.

      It's more important to understand chord shapes, and not specific chord names with mandolin. That's because they're all movable, which is part of the theory Jerry is explaining. He is using the G chop chord shape, or the two finger G chord. www.mandolincafe.com/cgi-bin/chords/ch.pl?chord=G

    I'm looking at that G shape and if it is 3rd fret E string, 2nd fret A string 4th fret D string and 5fth fret G string then that doesn't work in standard tuning. It would have to be 5th fret D string and 4th fret on G string. What am I not seeing here? is the mandolin tuned differently or am I seeing the finger positions wrong?

    • @bkindglassworks
      @bkindglassworks 6 лет назад +1

      You want your ring finger on the 5th fret of the D strings (G note) and pinky on the 7th fret of the G (D note).

    • @markfreemantle7608
      @markfreemantle7608 6 лет назад

      This is a challenge for a lot of beginners; BIG stretch. The "Mel Bay Easy Chord" would be just fingers 1 & 2 (same place) and open G and D strings. Great for Folk songs; not so good for Blue Grass.

    Some good information in this video, but I disagree with his approach to learning chords. The 4-finger closed position bluegrass chop chord is a huge obstacle for people, especially people with small hands, and it may be impossible for many children. Plus, that chord is really a bluegrass convention. It's really not useful at all in any other style of music. I suppose if you're only interested in pure bluegrass and no other style of music, there might be some merit to it.

    • @lindaferster4848
      @lindaferster4848 5 лет назад +1

      I can't play a 4-finger chord, but I got a lot out of this lesson anyway. It's very useful for jam sessions.

    • @bobethington1238
      @bobethington1238 2 года назад

      Perhaps that is why he showed the easier 2 finger version also. He explained how difficult it is for a beginner to make a 4 finger G chord. He is a bluegrass mandolin player teaching some basic bluegrass method.

  • @dustinfields2055

    The mandolin is so much more than a bluegrass instrument. And you’ll never use the chop in anything other than bluegrass.

    Definitely not a good class for beginners. Trying to teach people a G chord (bluegrass) the difficulty will discourage people and most will give up. There are more ways of doing it than just one. Most will think I can not make that chord and just give up the instrument. I am sure there is a better method of teaching a beginning class than this.

  • @WildwoodvalleyBoy
    @WildwoodvalleyBoy 6 лет назад +3

    ...it is so ridiculous to see anyone teach the (G) closed- chord formation in that manner; many can't stretch their little finger to the 7th fret ! The simplest and best way is to place little finger on 5th fret D string, and ring finger on 4th fret (G) string ! Then, with 1st and 2nd fingers in their proper places, this closed-chord formation can be moved anywhere on finger board, i. e. , where space will permit !

      I fail to see where pointing out the obvious warrants the "need to learn manners". Perhaps the instructor needs to respect his audience/students/and the most successful music publisher in American history. I may not be a Mel Bay devotee but I would not slag him. This instructor is self absorbed. Were I a student in this group, I would have walked.
