Just finished this as my first blanket project! (Typically I do amigurumi) I’ve attempted blankets before but never finished them. I got this one finished in about 3 weeks and made it a 40x40ish square. I did 7 thicker sections with 6 rows and did a thinner section between each thick sections with 3 rows. And added 13 chains in the beginning. It’s lovely and I can’t wait to gift it at a baby shower in February with a matching amigurumi dinosaur!

Very good tutorial. This is the first time I'm doing a ripple. I do Irish knitting and crochet but this simple pattern was stumping me on the decreases. You made it easy to understand. I'm using brick red and gold and making a Winnie the Pooh color car seat cover.

This is so beautiful. I am making this blanket. It’s my first blanket. All cream. After many rows I went back and watch the tutorial again and I hadn’t been putting the two double crochets at the end of the row so my was wavy so I removed some rows. Is that why it was wider and wavy ? I’m an advanced beginner.
Thank you! Yes, chevrons can be tricky at first. It’s super important to make sure your stitches are in the proper places, otherwise your blanket will come out wavy. It’s possible you were adding extra stitches or maybe your tension was lose in some spots and tighter in others. This will even out over time. Keep at it! 😊
My advice. I used markers at every 12 stitches. I used the same color markers. On the last section, I use a different color marker. So I know where I am when I am working along. I also used a different color for the marker on the last plus 3. So i where to start the rows. I know it seems like alot to do. But it doesn't take long. And if there is a mis-count, I can count the sections. Instead of hundreds of stitches.
@@AmandaCrochets I am doing crochet a few years. I have marked my stitches after I kept loosing stitches. But with this pattern the count is so important! I do the same for my corner to corner too. I'm glad this tip will help others.

I’m glad you loved this pattern! I’m pretty simple when it comes to borders. I usually just make a single crochet border around my projects. I also like the picot border. I have several patterns showing both of these 😊🧶

To finish the blanket, you will weave in your ends with a tapestry needle. I usually go back and forth a few times to really secure it. Then I cut off the the yarn and you’re good to go.
I really like this pattern but not a fan of the ch3 method , i prefer the alt turning chain to avoid gaps. So instead of ch3, I just do the alt in that first stitch and the 1st DC, so it still works and gives me my no gap edge!
Such a great tutorial! I’ve finished crocheting my baby blanket (which is my first finished project!). What do you do with the little strands of yarn left on the sides after adding in a new color? I hope this question makes sense. This is all I have left to finish off my project

It's hard to say, but you can try making the same amount of chains I did in this tutorial or add a few extra if needed. If you make the first row, that will be a good indicator if your blanket is the right size or needs to be a little bigger/smaller. I hope that helps!
Does ut make a difference on the turns if you chain 3 and turn OR turn and then chain 3? I fo bd it hard to see where my last stitch of the row is supposed to be and sometimes end up doing it I the chain 🙁
I don’t think it matters. I’ve seen it done both ways. I like to chain before I turn my work. You can put stitch markers in the very first and very last stitch of each row to help keep your ends straight and know where to insert your hook.
Amanda, I love your tutorials , but have a wish. When I watch all the tutorials on chevron or ripple , i would love for some one to mention how much space the chevrons take. If I measure my chain , I definitely can’t say that’s how wide my blanket will be. Hopefully you understand my meager explanation.
I understand what you’re saying. When making chevrons, your initial chain will look a little smaller as you have to remember the peaks and valleys of the chevron stitch. It’s best to make a chain a little longer than normal to get the width you like. For this particular blanket, each chevron measured from one peak to the next is 4 inches wide. Hope that helps!
I have finished the first six rows and notice the blanket so far does not lay quite flat. It has a slight ripple. Do you think this could be from the starting chain stitches being somewhat tighter than the following rows? Or something else? This is such a good tutorial - thank you!
Yes, it’s possible that your tension is a little tighter. For the starting chain, you can always go up a hook size to make it a little more loose. Hopefully that does the trick 😉
Thank you so much, it looks like a great pattern! I’m only on row 4 or so right now, but I have a pretty important question: if we’re increasing each row, won’t it be shaped like a cone in the end? At first, I only had 4 stitches from end to the first 2x dc into one st, but on row 4 I’ve got 8 stitches between the end and the first 2xdc. Help!
It seems like you’re increasing too many stitches. For each row you will be working the two decrease stitches on top of the decreases from the previous row. The same thing with the increases. They should stack on top of one another. You should only have 3 stitches in between your increases and decreases.
I have finished a blanket and absolutely love it!! But how do I close the ends where I have changed colors? First blanket I do and I don’t know enough to find the solution on my own :).
When you change colors, you want to weave in the ends. To do so, you will get a tapestry needle and go in between the stitches of the same color (white yarn with white, blue with blue, etc.). That way your yarn end doesn't show in your finished item. I usually go back and forth a few times to really secure the ends. I hope that helps!
OMG! I am feeling extremely frustrated ATM! I successfully completed a small throw using this pattern. It turned out BEAUTIFULLY!!! Now decided to make a baby blanket but this time using the back loop for the textured ridges effect. I have encountered some problems in the 15th row. I end up with only 2 stitches at the end of the row. I redid the row 4 times, still ending up with 2 stitches. I redid the 14th and 13th rows without any problems, but the 15th row STILL ended up with just 2 stitches!! Ironically, the 14th and 15th rows stitches aligned together well. The yarn is SO stretched out that I wonder if it is possible to continue. Please help me with this issue! If you have any tips or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you for your time and help!😊
I highly suggest using stitch markers in the very first and very last stitches of each row. That will help keep things straight. I also recommend counting your stitches after each row. You should have 3 stitches in between your peaks and valleys. It seems like you miscounted before your 13-14th rows. Hope that helps!

I love this pattern and very easy to understand...thank you very much... am going to make one with a much thinner yarn will I need to increase the 3 double crochet in each stitch to maybe 6 or 9 before the increase and decrease...or should I just follow yours with 3.
That sounds great! The pattern repeat is 12+3. This means you will multiple any number by 12 to get your width. Once satisfied, you will add 3 chains to the very end to keep things in balance. As long as you follow this, you can use any weight yarn you'd like!
I ended with the 2 decreases on row 1 instead of the 3 double crochet. For the last chain should I still increase? I'm using light 3 yarn and chained 123
It looks like you might have missed a stitch or two along the way. I would start over to make sure you get the count correct. Otherwise your blanket will be out of balance.
If your blanket is wavy, it’s possible your tension is too tight or you’re adding too many stitches. I would try going up a hook size to see if that helps. 😊
So I'm using a 4mm hook with Bernat softee baby yarn, what would you suggest I do to make the dimensions the same. I'm a beginner and not sure how this math works
You may need to double the amount of chains to get the same width as my blanket. You can always try it out by making a multiple of 12 (12 times any number) and add 3 chains to the very end. Hope that helps!
Hi! I’m following this to make a neutral coloured blanked for my friends baby due at the end of November. I was wondering how you ‘weave in’ the end strands from each row when beginning a new colour? I’ve left a decent length for weaving in but not quite sure on how to do so. Hope you can help! Thanks!
Hello! To weave in your ends, you will take your tapestry needle and work in between the stitches. I usually go back and forth a few times to make sure it’s secure and hidden. Then you will snip off the excess. Hope that helps! 🧶🧶
I’m sure this would look beautiful in Caron Simply Soft yarn! You may need 1 additional skein of the two colors to complete this and 1 skein of the white.

For the beginning of each row you will have a chain 3 and 1 double crochet. For the end, you will have 2 double crochets. It seems like you might be adding too many stitches. Hope that helps!
At the end of every row should I end with 3 dc in the 3 stitches and then the 2 dc in the last stitch of each row and then turn? If I don't have that I have screwed something up?
At the end of each row, you will have 4 stitches left (after your decrease stitch). You will work 1dc in each of the 3 stitches and work 2dcs in the final stitch. Then you will chain 3 (counts as a dc) and will make 1dc in the very first stitch of the row. Hope that helps!
I leave a long tail to weave in. You can double knot your work so it doesn’t come undone. When weaving in your yarn end, go in three different directions so it stays put. Hope that helps!
Why did the glacier have less chains. Is it thicker? I used the, I Love This Yarn, navy, dk country blue, & white. Was yours supposed to use a J hook. I did mine in the beginning with a J then switched to I, my favorite hook.
I used a J hook for the entire pattern and I Love This Yarn. It’s all the same thickness. I’m not sure what you mean by less chains. Each row will be the same amount of stitches.
@@6996katmom I understand now. I made the one with Red Heart Soft a little bigger because I had more yarn I wanted to use up. Otherwise both Red Heart Soft and I Love This Yarn are the same weight.

This is so beautiful. I am making this blanket. It’s my first blanket. All cream. After many rows I went back and watch the tutorial again and I hadn’t been putting the two double crochets at the end of the row so my was wavy so I removed some rows. Is that why it was wider and wavy ? I’m an advanced beginner.
Thank you! Yes, chevrons can be tricky at first. It’s super important to make sure your stitches are in the proper places, otherwise your blanket will come out wavy. It’s possible you were adding extra stitches or maybe your tension was lose in some spots and tighter in others. This will even out over time. Keep at it! 😊

My advice. I used markers at every 12 stitches. I used the same color markers. On the last section, I use a different color marker. So I know where I am when I am working along. I also used a different color for the marker on the last plus 3. So i where to start the rows. I know it seems like alot to do. But it doesn't take long. And if there is a mis-count, I can count the sections. Instead of hundreds of stitches.

Love this pattern but how is the best way to finish it? And then do you just tuck in the strings at the end?
To finish the blanket, you will weave in your ends with a tapestry needle. I usually go back and forth a few times to really secure it. Then I cut off the the yarn and you’re good to go.
Hi what if I used a 3 light yarn? What size hook would be good for that?
I would use the recommended hook size listed on the yarn label or go 1 hook size up.
I really like this pattern but not a fan of the ch3 method , i prefer the alt turning chain to avoid gaps. So instead of ch3, I just do the alt in that first stitch and the 1st DC, so it still works and gives me my no gap edge!
I’ve never heard of that before, but if it works out better for you, that’s great!

Hi Joanne, for my blanket I did 12x8=96 and added 3 more chains for a total of 99.

It's hard to say, but you can try making the same amount of chains I did in this tutorial or add a few extra if needed. If you make the first row, that will be a good indicator if your blanket is the right size or needs to be a little bigger/smaller. I hope that helps!

Does ut make a difference on the turns if you chain 3 and turn OR turn and then chain 3? I fo bd it hard to see where my last stitch of the row is supposed to be and sometimes end up doing it I the chain 🙁
I don’t think it matters. I’ve seen it done both ways. I like to chain before I turn my work. You can put stitch markers in the very first and very last stitch of each row to help keep your ends straight and know where to insert your hook.
Loved the colors you used. Did you use all 5 skiens of yarn or you were left with some ? And what is the weight of the yarn you used ?

Amanda, I love your tutorials , but have a wish. When I watch all the tutorials on chevron or ripple , i would love for some one to mention how much space the chevrons take. If I measure my chain , I definitely can’t say that’s how wide my blanket will be. Hopefully you understand my meager explanation.
I understand what you’re saying. When making chevrons, your initial chain will look a little smaller as you have to remember the peaks and valleys of the chevron stitch. It’s best to make a chain a little longer than normal to get the width you like. For this particular blanket, each chevron measured from one peak to the next is 4 inches wide. Hope that helps!
can I make throw blanket instead of baby blanket?

I have finished the first six rows and notice the blanket so far does not lay quite flat. It has a slight ripple. Do you think this could be from the starting chain stitches being somewhat tighter than the following rows? Or something else?

Yes, it’s possible that your tension is a little tighter. For the starting chain, you can always go up a hook size to make it a little more loose. Hopefully that does the trick 😉
Thank you so much, it looks like a great pattern! I’m only on row 4 or so right now, but I have a pretty important question: if we’re increasing each row, won’t it be shaped like a cone in the end? At first, I only had 4 stitches from end to the first 2x dc into one st, but on row 4 I’ve got 8 stitches between the end and the first 2xdc.

It seems like you’re increasing too many stitches. For each row you will be working the two decrease stitches on top of the decreases from the previous row. The same thing with the increases. They should stack on top of one another. You should only have 3 stitches in between your increases and decreases.
I had used a base 22 for some reason, rather than 24. After I fixed that, everything fell into place. I don’t know where I got 22! Lol

I have finished a blanket and absolutely love it!! But how do I close the ends where I have changed colors? First blanket I do and I don’t know enough to find the solution on my own :).
When you change colors, you want to weave in the ends. To do so, you will get a tapestry needle and go in between the stitches of the same color (white yarn with white, blue with blue, etc.). That way your yarn end doesn't show in your finished item. I usually go back and forth a few times to really secure the ends. I hope that helps!
Is it ALWAYS 2 dbl at the end of a row in the chain 3?
The chain 3 counts as your first dbl crochet, so you will only make 1 dbl crochet.

I am feeling extremely frustrated ATM!
I successfully completed a small throw using this pattern. It turned out BEAUTIFULLY!!!
Now decided to make a baby blanket but this time using the back loop for the textured ridges effect.
I have encountered some problems in the 15th row. I end up with only 2 stitches at the end of the row.
I redid the row 4 times, still ending up with 2 stitches.
I redid the 14th and 13th rows without any problems, but the 15th row STILL ended up with just 2 stitches!!
Ironically, the 14th and 15th rows stitches aligned together well.
The yarn is SO stretched out that I wonder if it is possible to continue.
Please help me with this issue!

I highly suggest using stitch markers in the very first and very last stitches of each row. That will help keep things straight. I also recommend counting your stitches after each row. You should have 3 stitches in between your peaks and valleys. It seems like you miscounted before your 13-14th rows. Hope that helps!

I love this pattern and very easy to understand...thank you very much... am going to make one with a much thinner yarn will I need to increase the 3 double crochet in each stitch to maybe 6 or 9 before the increase and decrease...or should I just follow yours with 3.
That sounds great! The pattern repeat is 12+3. This means you will multiple any number by 12 to get your width. Once satisfied, you will add 3 chains to the very end to keep things in balance. As long as you follow this, you can use any weight yarn you'd like!
I ended with the 2 decreases on row 1 instead of the 3 double crochet. For the last chain should I still increase? I'm using light 3 yarn and chained 123
It looks like you might have missed a stitch or two along the way. I would start over to make sure you get the count correct. Otherwise your blanket will be out of balance.
Is it okay for the early stages of the blanket to not sit flat but instead be kind of wavy?
If your blanket is wavy, it’s possible your tension is too tight or you’re adding too many stitches. I would try going up a hook size to see if that helps. 😊
So I'm using a 4mm hook with Bernat softee baby yarn, what would you suggest I do to make the dimensions the same. I'm a beginner and not sure how this math works
You may need to double the amount of chains to get the same width as my blanket. You can always try it out by making a multiple of 12 (12 times any number) and add 3 chains to the very end. Hope that helps!
Hi! I’m following this to make a neutral coloured blanked for my friends baby due at the end of November. I was wondering how you ‘weave in’ the end strands from each row when beginning a new colour? I’ve left a decent length for weaving in but not quite sure on how to do so. Hope you can help! Thanks!
Hello! To weave in your ends, you will take your tapestry needle and work in between the stitches. I usually go back and forth a few times to make sure it’s secure and hidden. Then you will snip off the excess. Hope that helps! 🧶🧶

For the beginning of each row you will have a chain 3 and 1 double crochet. For the end, you will have 2 double crochets. It seems like you might be adding too many stitches. Hope that helps!

At the end of every row should I end with 3 dc in the 3 stitches and then the 2 dc in the last stitch of each row and then turn? If I don't have that I have screwed something up?
At the end of each row, you will have 4 stitches left (after your decrease stitch). You will work 1dc in each of the 3 stitches and work 2dcs in the final stitch. Then you will chain 3 (counts as a dc) and will make 1dc in the very first stitch of the row. Hope that helps!

How you end, or knot the end of each color ? And how to make a secure knot.? Some of my work come undone after laundry.
I leave a long tail to weave in. You can double knot your work so it doesn’t come undone. When weaving in your yarn end, go in three different directions so it stays put. Hope that helps!

Why did the glacier have less chains. Is it thicker? I used the, I Love This Yarn, navy, dk country blue, & white. Was yours supposed to use a J hook. I did mine in the beginning with a J then switched to I, my favorite hook.
I used a J hook for the entire pattern and I Love This Yarn. It’s all the same thickness. I’m not sure what you mean by less chains. Each row will be the same amount of stitches.

@@6996katmom I understand now. I made the one with Red Heart Soft a little bigger because I had more yarn I wanted to use up. Otherwise both Red Heart Soft and I Love This Yarn are the same weight.
