I can’t find the video that I made a comment a while back on the squat motion so here’s my update: it absolutely works! My mantra has been turn (into right hip), drop (squat), and pop (push up and through).
Wow. Just found this video and followed. I always tried to push down on the lead foot (after recentering). Always topped it. This move has been magic for me. Keeps my upper body delayed instead of flying open. I just pressure down a little, and the rotation just happens. A ton of speed, also. Thank you, Harry. I've never seen another instructor teach this move.
Hi @jeffsimeone2768 thanks for commenting. Very pleased to read this is the magic move for you in the downswing. I agree with both methods but this one has worked way more often with my students and myself also. Keep me posted with how you get on!
Hi thank you so much for the Super Thanks! Much appreciated, i'm really pleased you've found this video useful to help you improve your downswing with the lower body move!
Thank you, really pleased you found this video simple. The golf swing can be easy/ simple. But it’s also very easy to over complicate. Keep me posted with how you get on after trying this!
Excellent suggestion Harry on how to initiate the downswing with the lower body. I have been using your backswing recommendation and it has been working out quite well for me. Now, all I have to do is to implement this ground force move into my downswing. Well Done Harry!
Great Video... I found that as the club is going back start the downswing.... Being trying that move for a few rounds...getting better stike with my irons... Appreciate your Video... Thanks
Thats great to read @kcd2630 thanks for commenting with your experience combining this move with starting the downswing as the club continues on the upward motion.
Great lesson and explanations. However, I've been seeing people recommend starting to drop the arms during the forward shift, before starting the body rotation to help shallow the club/get the inside out path and keep the arms and hands in front and not lagging. What do you think about this thought/timing on starting the downswing before the "unrotation" of the body.
Forward shift early is great if you’re able to delay the body rotation enough. I see too many golfers and students of mine in particular that becuase there flexibility isn’t great, when they shift forward they early extend and fire the hips (rotation too early) too early. So I’d suggest trying both but would favour this one I’ve shown if you’re someone looking for a way to create more room through impact every time!
As your pushing back up from the squat the rotation and transition will happen naturally. These two things are things that will happen with you encourage this push off from the press down taking place. Hope this makes sense!
The backswing squat. Part of this video is great. However, I think the next move to the front leg and turning could use another video I think a lot of us get confused with the reaction force coming back up after the squat and is that the move that pulls our shoulders around on the plane or is it a timed combo of push off and turn.. It seems to be the part in a lot of videos that gets really missed about how to get around the corner from the top.. Great video!
Hi thanks for commenting with another video idea, yes for someone like myself who's done this move over and over again it's easy for me to say push up and through. But you're right, what does it mean? I shall take note of this when i look into another video based on this topic.
Hi Harry thanks for your prompt reply I'm going to keep the right arm flexed as a top in the backswing and rely on my rotation of the upper body in the backswing to keep the left arm straight any comment on keeping the hinge of the right hand through impact thanks for your help kindly advise Jack
HI Jack, pleased you've managed to watch this video after my recommendation. So for the correct wrist hinge i would advise staying tuned to this Fridays video and next weeks video as i'll cover this in more detail. My latest video will also help with controlling the wrists more through impact and prevent over release/ early release and hooking the ball. Hope this helps.
Hi Harry thanks for your prompt reply when you say push lower body off and through do you mean pushoff right foot transfer weight and rotate lower body thanks for your help kindly advise Jack
i would recmened feeling this more fro the right foot, so the pressure being maintained/ added into the trail side (the right foot) as you press down, so it needs to be pushed off fro this same foot, and you'll find when doing this that the hips rotates and fires anyway... this happens naturally!
I am on the right track with the squat, to me it feels as if it is happening about 75% of backswing. Have had wonderful ranges session with this technique but does not translate under pressure in match play. To many old habits come back I suppose but on the right track.
Hi Mason, great to read you've been practicing this movement. Would recommend finding a routine to help you handle the pressure on the golf course. Would you like me to see if i can get a mind coach specialist in golf to come on the channel, i've learnt a lot from him and i do believe he'll help you.
Hi thanks for commenting, it does'nt need to be tucked in to a point where it's too connected however we also don't want the trail arm to flare away too much from the body. As long as the right arm folds correctly you'll find this drill easy... but if you're struggling with this... the video that's coming out on Friday to do with the arms will be great for you to watch so stay tuned for that.
I think half my trouble is being too tense and solid in my stance so maybe this will loosen me up a bit. I've made improvements but biggest issue right now is throwing my right hip out, so I hit out right. Is this bump likely to help me with that?
Hi Harry great video at the top do you recommend straightening the right arm to keep the left arm straight or should I keep the right elbow pointing to the ground with full wedge of the right hand thanks for your help kindly advise Jack
Hi thanks for commenting, so i would recommend allow the right arm/ trail arm to flex as you would do with tow hands on the club during a normal backswing. So allow the arm to flex.
Which video are we looking at? Anything to do with the width increasing in the backswing is right… but some golfers have the tendency of doing the opposite.
No problem Jeff, my replies on here aren't the best either, pleased to read the improvements have been made, if you need help with anything else feel free to contact me via the link on my homepage.
@Jackm-r6f yes, i do have videos for this when using the driver also so i'd recommend taking a look at those if you're looking for any more tips with this movement using other clubs.
Harry, I noticed when I do squat to start the downswing, the arms naturally fall into the correct position. Is this what you have found for most of your students??? Thanks
@MB-ep2vt thats great to read, yes that is what i've found for my students some more than others. The ones who struggling with doing this a little will be because they have too much tension around their arms and shoulders... once this is sorted they feel is straight away!
So does it mean one has to stand slightly taller in backswing to execute the little squat move ? Just feels to rotate to top of swing , to then execute that move, it’s difficult in the sequence as it’s no time to do. For me anyway. But if standing slightly taller, it’s easy to perform it.
Yes you will find that standing slightly taller (legs slightly straighter at the top) but i would set up as you normally would to then be a little taller at the top of the backswing to really enourage more of a squat move to begin the downswing. Hope this makes sense.
What happens if you start to do the squat movement but you are now hitting behind the ball instead of where your previous angle of attack had you hitting the lowest point in front of the ball?
Hi thanks for commenting, this is a great indication that you’re really exaggerating the squat move to take place but you need to push back up & turn through faster.
No problem, keep me posed with how you're getting on and if you're looking for a second pair of eyes on your swing/ second opinion, take a look at my online coaching profile via Skillest skillest.app.link/profile?u=2dyZpwGMSMDiPJfPJ
@sieghart132 it genuinley depends on what you're tendencies are in your golf swing. If you'd like me to check your tendencies you can download Skillest, follow me and i can analyse your golf swing.
HI Raymond, i wouldn't recommend this because you can end up getting stuck and early extending, allow the swati to take place then push up and through onto the lead side.
Incorrect understanding of Newton's Third Law (you are not alone!). If you apply a force on the ground, the ground will apply a force back on you which is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. The object in question does not have to be stationary or at a constant velocity which is not like forces in equilibrium on the one body where there is no acceleration. Without acceleration, you cannot swing a golf club! Here endeth the lesson.
Thank you for asking Harry. Some would just accuse me of being a pompous git. I'm trying out your move - the squat move is a more difficult concept to execute for many golfers and feels counter-intutiative but I must admit this is simpler than starting the downswing with "rotate" which can lead to "over the top" (as you say) and when you squat, you end up rotating anyway to complete the swing. Always known the old adage of "keep your head still" is wrong - it has a compact U-shape motion.
Hi Simon, yes this concept helps and has helped a lot of my students produce a more reliable downswing move to make better contact and see better ball flights. If you have any further questions on this or would like a second pair of eyes on your golf swing. You can follow me on Skillest (an online coaching app) skillest.app.link/profile?u=2dyZpwGMSMDiPJfPJ
@HarryShaw, you are becoming my favorite golf coach. You're able to simply this squat move and clarify what Ben Hogan tried in his fundamentals book. Doing the squat move looks simple but it's so difficult. When I slow it down, I lose the rythm, when I speed it up, I would come over the top. But I will keep working on this. Thank you for all your teachings.
