Hello I can reply to this, the podcast beauty brains has an episode on April 9th about bond builders. This podcast is by cosmetic chemists who break down skincare but actually specialize in hair care. Their summary was that it is doing something for the hair but possibly not what is claimed and possibly over claimed in their patent, as it doesn’t have to hold up to peer reviewed science. Essentially, it had to do with different types of bonds and olaplex claims to strengthen disulfide bonds which would be extremely hard to do, however their are other types of hydrogen and electrostatic bonds and of course there are conditioning agents, keratin, amino acids, or conditioners in these products. the acid used actually displaces water, which can be perceived as strengthening the hair and facilitate these other bonds. So strengthing hair yes.....but more extreme claims.....
It was 100 brush strokes...they did not wash very frequently, and only had harsh soaps in the olden days. They were using their own hair oil from the scalp to distribute through the hair shaft of usually long hair. ❤️
They used a boar bristle brush to distribute either natural oils or added oil. People still do this today. It's good for some people's hair... it doesn't work for me. They also detangled with a comb that would have been oiled.
I’ve been growing out my dyed and damaged hair, my regrowth is so much healthier and thicker. I’ve been using a small amount of hair conditioner with wet hands, to work through lengths of towel dried hair, to deranged and add extra softness to my very damaged hair.
Thank you for sharing all your dry/damaged hair suggestions. Here are things I do for my dry/color treated hair: use a conditioner in the shower, then also use a leave in conditioner on wet hair. I hold the dryer about 6inches away from my hair and focus on the roots, always moving the dryer back and forth. Let the rest air dry. Sometimes I use coconut oil on the ends and brush in. All this works well for me and it doesn't cost very much. Have a great day ❤👏❤
I grayed early, and I am super self-conscious about my gray roots, so I get my hair colored at a salon (I refuse to use box dyes). I know it still contributes to hair damage, but my hair looks so much better after it's been colored. I hate my gray roots :(

When I was growing up we didn’t have “conditioners” like today. The best we had was called “cream rinse” that you mixed with water & poured over your hair.
ミシェル black people back in the day had their own methods of caring for their hair. i’m not black myself but i’ve watched a lot of videos on that topic 😅
oh boy...that took me back. Creme Rinses, late 50s-60s There were some deep conditioners WAY back then! Wella & Clairol had deep conditioners that came in big tubs that you left on, preferably under a plastic cap, up to an hour before rinsing out. V05 also made little tubes of 'oil' that you heated up in a cup of hot water before applying . I remember those as really good. Some brand had a product called 'cholesterol' (?) in those big tubs & were very effective too. we would have been amazed at the assortment of available hair products on the shelves today. My mother washed my hair in that emerald green shampoo 'Prell'.
Thanks to an earlier video of yours, I wash gently, wrap my hair, then let it dry naturally, and don't comb or brush until the following morning. Wow! That alone has made my hair look and feel healthier (also just stopped heat styling too).Your hair is my inspiration. 😀 Thanks for all the tips and product suggestions today, and have a fantastic weekend!
Out of curiosity... I recently started to apply some CeraVe lotion on my scalp after my showers to help with the dryness and flakiness. I like the results so far. My scalp feels soothed and less itchy. And to me this a cheaper alternative to buying a fancy "hydrating shampoo." But that got me wondering, what would be the effects of such lotion on the actual hair strands? 🤔 Can skin moisturizers (hyaluronic acid) have any impact - whether it's good or bad- on the hair itself?
If you have to wash your hair more than once a week, your hair is "oily", and then the flakes are not from dry hair, but from oily hair and a yeast overgrowth, something called SD aka seborrheic dermatitis. I suffer from it, and all it takes is a medicated shampoo (Nizoral 2%). No need to rub cream on the scalp, possibly making it worse in the long run. What is so terrible about SD is that if you leave it too long you can lose hair over it! So be careful!
@Diana Moore We understand each other then. :D It can be annoying, but I have found that in between "bouts" of it, that if I cleanse well (sulfate shampoo), that it helps keep it at bay. It's been a year since I last had to use my medicated shampoo this way.
My hair is sooooo dry like sand paper no joke. They just brake off. No matter what products I use I can’t find nothing to make them hydrated. I don’t use any toxic products I try to use as clean as possible. I do color my hair 2x a year but that’s about it.
Paul Mitchell The Detangler is the only conditioner that detangle my fine wavy hair effortlessly, tried many many other ones and always goes back to PM.
Great information! It’s no fun when your hair begins to change as we get older! But I’ve quit flat ironing my hair so much and I’ve really seen the difference!!
I have a love/hate relationship with my curly hair..... mainly because if not controlled, it turns frizzy... cannot stand it. Thanks for the tips, but I have to tell you, the drying the hair with a T-shirt instead of a towel has been the most helpful tip for me, something so simple that makes a huge difference. THANKS! Also.. I love what you are wearing... and really beautiful color on you. Have a great weekend!
The bumble and bumble heat primer is amazing! My mom has recently went through menopause and her hair is dryer now I gave her a travel size bottle of it and she says it's MAGIC! lol
A hairdresser once suggested to me, that we should look after our hair like we would the most expensive cashmere sweater. A great way to look at it, but quite difficult with all the other stuff going on in our lives.
Ever since COVID started, I grew out my very short hair. Now, I love using the super-cheap Pantene rose leave-in silicon-free for my thin, straight, fine hair. I suspect there is a reason it is cheap, though… it helps me to put a bit of deep conditioner into my hair, when I lightly braid it for sleeping & keeping my hair off my face. With hot flashes, having it braided keeps me from getting a hot flash if the hair gets around my neck… ❓ QUESTION: Japanese hair & scalp clinics are hella into scalp exfoliation & serums. About once a month, I mix some baking soda into some CeraVe cleanser & give my scalp a light buff, since 8 don’t have dandruff, but I am prone to oily buildup, since I have thin hair, but enough oil production for a full head. (Copper damages hair 😳)
Hi Dr. Dray!! Yes, I wear a spring summer wide brim hat, with chin draw string and toggle. Just $19 from Amazon, with SPF. Can't recall the brand, but love it. Growing my hair hopefully, another 8-11 inches. Keep your hair growing!! Will look and feel beautiful😍😍😍 I am 53 and have just a little grey hair. Will not use dye. Prefer it natural, for sure!! Stay well and healthy!! Thank you for the advice.
In the 80's, I unfortunately basically ruined my hair with countless perms. I was left with very dry, brittle hair. My hair has never been the same since and as I've gotten older, I haven't been able to find any product that would make my hair soft and shiny. I don't use a curling iron or a flat iron but I do blow dry. I will take your tips and hopefully you can do for my hair what you've done for my skin! Thank you so much!! Happy Friday, Dr Dray!! Have a beautiful evening. 🐟🐝🐟
May I ask why do you blow dry? I cut out all the Heat. If you shampoo in the mornings, can you change that to night time so that your hair can dry overnight like dr. Dray's? If you are blow drying because you have curly hair and you don't want curly hair or don't want to wear your hair curly always, you can try stretching it in a different way. Would you mind a light oil to help with the shine such as jojoba oil at Trader Joe's? I tried that and I seem to notice more shine and it really only takes two or three drops rubbed between your palms depending on the thickness of your hair of course.
I know dry because I have shirt, fine hair and it helps give it volume. I need to shampoo and blow dry in the morning for that reason. Because my hair is so fine, a lot of the hair oils just weigh it down. I've tried many different products but not with the results in looking for including some higher end products recommended by my hair dresser. Thanks for your response. 😊
Would love to hear your take on Brazilian blowouts or keratin blowouts. Hard to find info on this from dermatologists. While they are chemical treatments, Brazilian/keratin blowouts are marketed as keratin treatments, and so am not sure they can be lumped under conventional straightening methods (which damage/strip off keratin structure).
Hair is complicated. The whole protein vs moisture issue is so hard to work out. There is a website that is useful called the sciencey hair blog. Though my hair is damaged (sun, sea, pool, sweat, dye) it hates protein and Olaplex.
Keratin treatments or Brazilian blowouts? Has helped my coarse, curly hair with manageability and frizz and reduces the need to straighten or heat style my hair. But does it have long term effects to the keratin proteins in your hair? Hard to find any information on this
In my personal experience, yes. It was good at first but months in my hair was just as fried as if I had relaxed it. It's been 4 months since you made this comment, do you agree or is your hair still doing well?
The thing with silicones, at least some, is that you need a harsher sulfate to wash them out of the hair properly. If you know that, that's fine, but some don't and use silicones in their conditioners and stylers and don't cleanse enough leading to clogging and product build-up. I clarify-wash every wash (every week), and use silicones in my products without any hiccups. I love the "slip" they give the hair and I need it or my hair will knot up! :)
Hi Dr 💛 i love your videos I have a water softening system. i think it helps my hair and skin a lot! It was one of the selling points in my house 🤷 i recently started using keto shampoo and i need tips! It fries my hair and doesnt seem to help the psoriasis... Please help idk what im doing wrong
Hi Dr. Dray. Excellent video and professional. I do not usually buy products for my hair but when I saw your video I decided to buy the Bumble and Bumble because it does offer good benefits, unfortunately, it does have Fragrances which can be toxic and for me the smell is pungent. I had to return it the day after.
Hi Dr Dray, do you know the reason behind sudden growth of thicker, wiry hair that twist kind of like a DNA strand? Makes me crazy because I just have the urge to rip them all out. Also, thanks for making these videos and have a wonderful weekend!
I don't have chemically treated or in any way heat styled hair (I haven't even been to a swimming pool in years) and I only use a tangle teaser and I don't go in roughly with a towel at all to dry my hair. And yet my hair most exposed to the sun looks the best, shiniest and is most supple. About 1/3 is crunchy, unsmooth and doesn't want to wave like the rest of my hair. (My profile picture was taken on a very good hair day.) Soooo, it's probably something else?
@Dr Dray I want to thank you for bringing this information forth because I have such a hard time finding products I can use. I have always been sensitive to strong perfumy scents which has gotten worse with age. I also have sensitive skin which was worse when I was younger so I have always had to be cautious with what I used. I remember being a teen & tried a trendy antiperspirant which caused a painful rash that took forever to heal. I never dealt with acne but would react to products I used on my face or skin. Believe it or not the product I use to wash my face would probably be on your list of things to avoid but it has worked for generations in my family, Noxema. I try to avoid fragrance in my skin care since the only scents which are very light are a cucumber or a pomegranate in the moisturizer. I wish people would start to put their efforts behind removing fragrances since it causes more issues than the additives they consider evil. I know they are trying to stay on trend but as you said they are not as much of a problem as they believe & are only replaced with something else which they know nothing about. Anyway thank you for your help, there are so many products out there & finding ones that do not cause issues is hard. I will add especially now when we are no longer allowed to even go to a store to smell a product. I think this may end up effecting the sales of higher end products since the ability to actually see, feel & smell them have been removed. That was one advantage to buying prestige brands prior to CV19.
My mom is fully gray, but it totally washes her out (doesn't suit her). She's 74 and she dyes it 3 to 4 times a year only (because she knows it is a damaging process), in a mid-tone blonde shade so you don't "much" see the gray come in. My hair is wavy/curly and over the bum length (classic length). I brush it out damp (after it's out of the microfiber towel) with a Wet Brush. These things are even better than a wide tooth comb (pull less, and less hair comes out). I would totally recommend, at least for my "loose" texture.
Thank you for the information and product recommendations, Dr. Dray! I'm to the point where I might as well get rid of almost all of my heat styling appliances, as I so rarely use them...now two homes later. 😊 How do you feel about Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, etc. as conditioners? If you've noted this in another video, please advise. Thanks!
Thank you 😊 for information 😊 could you suggest more affordable hair products for damaged hair and what might you recommend for hair I use Clairol for root touch up and I have terrible psoriasis on my head... could you suggest over the counter products for relief😊. Thank you very much. 😊
I wash only my scalp when shampooing and use the rinse of for the rest.. and just washing the hair less or with more gentle shampoo helps tremendously with breakage
I changed from salon color to Madison Reed which has no PPD and Resersinol? in it and my hair is much healthier. Their shampoo and conditioner are great. They have Argon oil in them and my hair is so shiny after using them. I also recommend L'anza hair products. They are very expensive but my hair was the healthiest using the shampoo and conditioner. They also have a product called Trauma Treatment that you can leave in your hair and it literally changes your hair back to being supple. It only takes a little bit on dry hair.
Dr Dray what is the UV protectant in the Bumble & bumble invisible oil heat & UV primer you recommend? I can’t find it in the ingredients. Is it the cinimates perhaps?
Oh how I needed this video. I’ve recently bleached my hair and it’s so fried and is breaking and falling out like crazy! 😢 I’ve lost at least half of my hair and it doesn’t seem to be growing back. It is so depressing!!! It’s been a few months (probably 6ish months) since I killed my hair and it’s still breaking and I lose so much hair in the shower and even after. I don’t brush it when it’s wet, I wait until it’s almost fully dry before brushing and I still lose a lot after the shower. It’s so heartbreaking. I want to cry everyday because of it.
Chelsea Sehon I also bleached my hair on Wednesday and it’s breaking I feel like cutting 6 inches but I kinda want to wait I still have length but half of my hair on one side is full like it didn’t get damage but the other half side did since I got impatient I apply a higher developer smh 40vol n that side is the one that I’m seeing breakage n damage it just melt out at the bottom so even if I cut it I will still have length but I don’t want to cut it 😣
LEGO Building I also used a 40vol because I was using Olaplex with it and they say that Olaplex dilutes the vol so I bumped the vol up to a 40 thinking it would be a 30 because that’s what the directions said. 😢 It’s insane how much hair I’ve lost. I almost don’t want to leave my house I know it sounds silly but it’s devastating.
LEGO Building I’m also going to have to cut a lot off. I’ve been wanting to avoid cutting it since I had just recently cut so much off before I started bleaching. 🤦🏼♀️ my hair use to be down to my butt and now it’s a little longer than shoulder length. Ever since I stared bleaching my hair 2 years ago it doesn’t grow nearly as fast as it use to. My hair use to grow like crazy and now I’m lucky to get a little growth. 😞 I really regret every bleaching my hair.
Same happend to me. It took my hair 2 and a half years to fully grow and repair. It is a process, but I learnt to care about what I put to my hair and to just appreciate my natural hair. I also felt so depressed in the beginning too, but you just have to be patient and learn from your mistakes. Good luck 🤞
Chelsea Sehon yes once you bleach it you pretty much never get it back I used to have so much hair that I couldn’t even hold it w one hand now is sad it’s probably 1/4 of what I used to have and ppl will still say I have a lot of hair but I know I don’t! Have you seen ellenbangs channel?
What are your recommendations for hard water? I've seen attachments for showers but what would you say is the most effective and easiest application to install by yourself (to a rental shower so it needs to be removable)?
Good information today! I have light, fine hair and try to keep it from turning green from our citys municipal water by using either purple types of shampoo or what is labelled swimmers shampoo. In the winter if I'm showering and then going outside,l pretty much have to blow dry my hair ,it's just too cold out!! In the warm temps, l let it dry naturally, my hair is very straight so it's good to go. Happy Friday Almost the weekend 😊🍁
@@jenniferannfox2316 do tell. Im using their root lift now. Not a whole lot of volume but my hair atleast is not sticky and gross. What is their heat protector called?
@@michelletidler1868 I've only used the original in the little blue bottle Its a Ten. Its supposed to do alot things. It adds alot of moisture without weighing the hair down for me.
Would you please do a review of flaxseed gel for hair? Curious to know about its effectiveness. And thank you for your informative content! Highlight of my day :)
All great advice if you have good hair. Unfortunately, I have crappy super fine, flat, do nothing hair that is the colour of blah together with a naturally high hairline. So no, I will not stop colouring my hair regularly nor blow drying. That being said, I stopped perming my hair back in the 80s, because in addition to being crappy, super fine hair is hopelessly fragile. It is the reason I use the low setting on my hair dryer. I have also worn a hat in the summer for over 30 years, which in addition to protecting my skin, caused one of my hairdressers to remark on how well my colour stayed (in other words, little if any oxidation). So two birds with one hat. 😉 I stay away from oils as it is a disaster for super fine hair unless you like a flat gooeyness as a hair style. I apply conditioner only to the ends because it will flatten it otherwise. I choose deep conditioners carefully for the same reason. The natural state of my hair means, despite girlhood dreams of hair like Jacqueline Smith's, short hair styles are best to maintain volume, so I get regular trims. Round brushes are my tool of choice and I am always looking for that miracle volumizing spray that doesn't cost a million dollars and actually works. I have found a few; however, they always seem to be discontinued by idiot companies. My hair is in good shape over all, though the joys of menopause have resulted in scalp dryness being more of an issue.
Hi Dr Dray could you talk more about heat and hair such as specific ingredients that protect hair from heat, what happens to our hair on a microscopic level when we use heat, etc.? I’m a hairstylist and I’m trying to learn as much as I can about the science of hair but I can’t find very many trustworthy sources. It’s important for me since we do a lot of heat styling in the salon and I also have a responsibility to coach clients on how to keep their hair the healthiest they can. I also don’t want to just blindly believe what I’ve been told in school.
Did I understand correctly? You recommend using a UV primer instead of a purple shampoo for graying hair? I have wavy/curly hair, and if I use a silicone conditioner my curls disappear, if I don't, my hair gets extremmely frizzy. Any suggestions?
Thank you Dr. Dray for this video! My hair is severely damaged and my scalp hurts!!😢 I'm going to try some of the products you mentioned. As always, love all your videos!!☕🥤🌊
Thank you Dr.Dray, I really needed this video I’m having a real problem with my hair I think part of the problem is medication.I don’t blow dry my hair and after your advice I’m using a wide tooth comb. Thank you again, Hi mom and Tybee .
Here's another question I hope Dr. Dray is able to answer. I use a heat protectant (oil) for hair every day. I like it cause it makes my hair shine and feel soft. But is heat protectant the same as spf for hair? Or is it possible that even though this oil protects it when blow-drying my hair, it still isn't doing anything against uv rays? Do I need to buy a product for hair that specifically reads spf on the label?
@@nikkix2896 I'm inclined to believe so as well. But tbh, finding products online that are labeled "spf for hair" isn't as easy as finding hair protectants. And the ones that actually are labeled that way, can be really expensive. On top of that, those either don't specify the factor or simply don't go above spf15. To me, this aspect is the least straight forward out there in terms of disclosure and actual benefits beyond marketing techniques. 🤷♂️ That's why I'd like to hear from Dr. Dray regarding this topic. 😉
Heat protectant are not spf and your best bet is to save your Money and just wear a scarf around your head or a hat with cloth on it, Dr dray has a video on full body sun protection
New comment on an old post...may have to try via Instagram but wondering about Dimethicone. It is in the Bumble and Bumble product that you recommend. My concern now that I know it’s not water-soluble is whether or not I need to cease using products that contain it. And you accurately point out that it’s abundant. I appreciate the lesson in the difference between silicones. It’s VERY helpful to someone with fine hair that tangles and breaks. As usual this one was a great lesson.
I don't consider my hair damaged it's just dry because it's naturally wavy/curly / thick and I always use good products but I think it's porous because the color has been "grabbing" darker in certain spots I'm just gonna go a shade lighter and concentrate on covering the gray roots and not coloring my whole head so much Thanks for these products /tips I'd def like to try the B&B spray to ward off brassiness Thanks☺💝
I love your videos. I've been binge watching them for about 4 days now. ..getting nothing else done. Lol I have learned a great deal from you and hope to learn even more. I was wondering how you feel about the Live Clean product line. I don't know if you even have it there ; I live In Canada. To the average consumer it seems like a great, safe alternative. Still, after watching your videos I have to wonder. I'm hoping you do a review on it someday. Keep up the good work. Oh and just an FYI we do have Cerave here as well.

With hot flashes, having it braided keeps me from getting a hot flash if the hair gets around my neck…
❓ QUESTION: Japanese hair & scalp clinics are hella into scalp exfoliation & serums. About once a month, I mix some baking soda into some CeraVe cleanser & give my scalp a light buff, since 8 don’t have dandruff, but I am prone to oily buildup, since I have thin hair, but enough oil production for a full head.
(Copper damages hair 😳)
Any suggestions for hard water? I feel like it makes my hair crunchy and flat looking :(
Suzy S I think you can buy a filter for your shower head on amazon! X
Apple cider vinegar
In the final rinse use vinagre mixed with water (to remove the minerais in the water to remain on the hair) you will see it shines more.
You have the BEST informational vids on RUclips regarding these issues!! Thank you!!
The Shea Moisture line offers some great products! They do have fragrance. But overall, high quality ingredients with nothing drying/damaging 😍
My hair hates that line...along with all coconut oil
I used devacurl. I basically had to regrow my hair and it’s still no good because my scalp is not healthy
Hi Dr.

You can try fermented rice on your hair. I spray mine every few days. Makes it so super soft
Flower Child
Haha. Yup! 😀
Or didya try it and not like it? I get jasmine rice and use that. :D
I've never heard of that. What exactly is it? Do you make it yourself? Thank you.
Yes. I would like to know the same 👆🏻
Hair is complicated. The whole protein vs moisture issue is so hard to work out. There is a website that is useful called the sciencey hair blog. Though my hair is damaged (sun, sea, pool, sweat, dye) it hates protein and Olaplex.
Thanks Dr.! What do you say about keratin treatment? Is it good?
What do you think about keratin treatment?
I have grays since my 20’s, plus I have thyroid issues, and curly hair that grows out instead of down 😞
Keratin treatments or Brazilian blowouts? Has helped my coarse, curly hair with manageability and frizz and reduces the need to straighten or heat style my hair. But does it have long term effects to the keratin proteins in your hair? Hard to find any information on this
In my personal experience, yes. It was good at first but months in my hair was just as fried as if I had relaxed it. It's been 4 months since you made this comment, do you agree or is your hair still doing well?
@Mineral I was thinking about getting a Brazilian blowout but then I read that they have a little bit of formaldehyde in it and that’s no good
The thing with silicones, at least some, is that you need a harsher sulfate to wash them out of the hair properly. :)
Is silicon really bad for hair please answer🙏🏻 ı am onlu trust you

I have a water softening system. i think it helps my hair and skin a lot!
Thank you so much for this! Dealing with postpartum hair shedding and breakage 😫
I’m surprised you did not talk about Olaplex

Can we use regular body sunscreen on the hair? I dn’t think a specific sunscreen for the hair is abundant here
Hi Dr Dray, do you know the reason behind sudden growth of thicker, wiry hair that twist kind of like a DNA strand? Makes me crazy because I just have the urge to rip them all out.
Also, thanks for making these videos and have a wonderful weekend!
Chrystal I pull them out. It’s almost a compulsion for me. I’m curious why they pop up too.
Me too - thought I was the only one!
It’s hormones and thyroid related mostly or even “grey” hairs that haven’t lost pigment yet:)
I HATE those hairs, they get tweezed right away. Head pubes, I call them 🙄
I think it’s hormones.

Hi, you talked about swimming pools and tap water. Can you talk about the effects of sea water on the hair?
Hi Dr Dray! I love ur videos! Can you give moisturizing/conditioning shampoo recommendation for dry scalp? Thank you, have a nice day 😊
Oh how I needed this video. I’ve recently bleached my hair and it’s so fried and is breaking and falling out like crazy! 😢
I’ve lost at least half of my hair and it doesn’t seem to be growing back.
It’s insane how much hair I’ve lost.
I really regret every bleaching my hair.
Function of Beauty does not list ingredients in its site. What are the ingredients in the mask?
Hello! Is it damaging to use hair products with keratin or biotin in them? I’ve heard they may cause breakage? Love your videos :)

Best SUPPLEMENTS for healthy hair growth?
str c I have several videos on hair supplements
Can you suggest something for my country as well? The products you mentioned aren't available on online in Bangladesh
Is Bentonite Clay good to deep cleanse the hair and scalp?
What do you think of olaplex products
Am I really the first to acknowledge the 300 lb sized Olaplex in the room?
Here's another question I hope Dr. Dray is able to answer.
I use a heat protectant (oil) for hair every day. I like it cause it makes my hair shine and feel soft.
But is heat protectant the same as spf for hair? Or is it possible that even though this oil protects it when blow-drying my hair, it still isn't doing anything against uv rays?
Do I need to buy a product for hair that specifically reads spf on the label?
I think SPF and heat protectant are separate things but I could be wrong. It should say on your bottle if it has spf in it. But I’m not certain
That's why I'd like to hear from Dr. Dray regarding this topic. 😉
Heat protectant are not spf and your best bet is to save your
Money and just wear a scarf around your head or a hat with cloth on it, Dr dray has a video on full body sun protection
Idk some of the benefit of hair is sun protection of the skin
Dr Dray, which deep conditioning product(s) do you recommend? I have wavy dark/brown hair :)
