I just started hunting with a Browning xbolt long range max hells canyon in 300wm. My preference is a little more weight. It feels like I have more aiming stability. I still carry it all day with no issue. 1/8 twist works great with 200gr and up bullets.
I would have liked to have heard what scopes you both choose for your rifles as well. The scope, Rifle and Bullet per caliber make up the whole system. I assume that will be in another video.
I love Tikkas. I hate loud brakes! I have built T3s with carbon fiber barrels and stocks. I'm a rifle nut and can find something wrong with every rifle out there. Again Tikkas are very good. Some things I favor in big game rifles are.... Stainless. Not just for the outside, but for the inside of barrel. Lightweight to a point, but accurate, and a stock design which helps absorb recoil. (I once owned a Remington 700 375 H&H in a Brown Precision stock. It was a pussycat to shoot! No brake- the stock worked wonders, and something these newer stiff carbon stocks fail at) I now favor carbon fiber barrels. I do not like the look of whippy barrels. I like my bolt to lock with a 3 position safety. I like smooth bolt with reliable feeding. I favor a field strippable bolt. I now lean towards shorter barrels and a great trigger. I do not like plastic stocks, but can appreciate their utility. I do not like slippery stocks, or long detachable mags sticking way out below rifle. The Tikka is OK though. I do prefer shorter bolt lifts, low mounted scopes, and one way or another correct comb height. I'm torn between utility and custom/semi-custom rifles. With no rifle will I get it all, but can try to come close. I like custom Tikka builds. I like the Christensen Arms Ridgeline FFT and the Fierce Carbon Fury. Oddly I like the Savage 110 Ultralight in 28 Nosler I own, but have not shot yet. It's a confusing rifle. Light, utilitarian, plastic, but with a blueprinted action and carbon barrel. Crazy! I've not sold it yet! So that must say something? For some funny reason I also have and like a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in 300 Weatherby. 24-inch barrel, plastic stock. Dull black finish, which almost looks coated? Good 2 stage trigger, 3 position safety which locks bolt closed, hand strippable bolt and it feeds rounds like butter! I'm trying to talk myself out of buying a Stocky's lightweight stock for it, but if I did would end up with a 6&3/4lb 300. What couldn't I hunt with that inexpensive rifle??? Tempting for sure, but not in the same league as the new higher end production guns. Lastly, you'll think I'm nuts... I have a cheap Remington 770 in 7 REM mag. I got it working smooth and like it for some reason???? What's scary is, one could sucessfully hunt most Western big game with that $250 rifle!!!
@joshuadaniels6024 well I don't know that I will be. I don't know I won't be... I do know I will be getting a bergara crest carbon in 6.5PRC sometime this year.
🤷♂️ Whether Or Not We Agree On Our Favorite Cartridge, Hopefully We Can Agree That Their Is No Reason Why We Can't Own More Than One Gun In Multiple Calibers? The 30 Caliber Is A Fine All Around Choice And Is Why I Also Own A 30-06! 🤑
Browning x bolt speed or western hunter. Light, smooth/super reliable action, very accurate, good stock, muzzle brake included, good metal finish. Perfect western hunting rifle! I also have a Weatherby vanguard talon which also checks all the boxes and comes in even lighter! Love em both!
Im looking forward to next week's video. I hope you will share ballistic comparisons of the 30-06, 270, and 300WM. My 270 is nothing fancy just a 20 year old Remington bolt action 270 with an even older Weaver scope. She does not miss and everything ends up in the freezer. I am enjoying your show.
I Hope That You Saw The Vortex Nations Podcast, Comparing Calibers In Penetration Tests With Copper Bullets? The 270 Winchester Penetrated Farther Into Gel Blocks Than the 300 WM, 7 Rem Mag, 7mm prc, 30-06, 308 Win., 6.5 Creedmore, etc....😎
🕵️♂️ My Sako Rifle Meets ALL Your Requirements (Accurate, Smooth Action, Light Weight, and a "Handier" 22 1/2" barrel)! At 7 1/4 pounds "fully equipped" (Scope, Rings/Bases, Sling/Swivles, etc...) it does the job! Your Friend (Dave) is Smart! 👨🎓 My rifle is Chambered in the 270 Winchester and with the 165 Nosler ABLR Bullets (using the Temperature Stable H4831SC powder) will maintain 2,000 ft/s and 1,500 ft lbs (what is Needed to kill an elk, having a muzzle velocity of 2,800+ ft/s) out to Over 1/2 Mile at the elevations that I hunt at (9,000 ft to 12,000 ft)! Yes, the 1 in 10 inch Twist Will Stabilize That Bullet! The light recoil doesn't require a muzzle break, even though the gun is made to use one, and I can put the Bullet exactly where it needs to go (easier than a magnum cartridge can, because of the lighter recoil)! 🎯
With that ignorance speak for yourself. This is coming from the western side of the Pacific NW where we don't have any choice than to hunt from logging roads that fallow massive canyons where we shoot extreme distances because we can't get to the animals any other way, so we have to shoot over these canyons. Here using an East coast white tail deer gun like the 270 win or deer gun 30-06 you would be looking at Elk over the canyon and just out of luck to take one down.
One of many of my rifles is the Tikka T3 ultra-light fluted barrel in 7 mm Rem mag bought in 2009. I want everyone to know do not drop a Tikka in its bolt handle or the bolt handle breaks the dove tailed slots in the bolt then Berretta the importer is going to charge for a new bolt $670 !! It nearly happened to me dealing with the asshole Berretta warranty person Rick Gimp who I gave the ultimatum if you don't warranty this gun, I go to my trade shows to sell my Alaska hunts and show the public what you just told me is a Tikka rifle failed bolt design - boy that ended that, and I got the new bolt no charge. The next I want to comment on you have zero experiences in hunting Roosevelt elk and Black tail deer from the massive canyons of the North Oregon coast so please stop with the videos that you think you know everything to be had about western hunting because you truly don't. Here we hunt the massive Pacific NW canyons and at times we are at an elevation to see the Pacific Ocean from where we are hunting and the canyons are massive in miles long and deep so using deer guns on the 30-06 is just a bad idea that you will see Elk or Black tail deer across the canyons that a deer gun 30-06 would be just worthless shooting a whole box of ammo to see you can hit the elk or deer and if hit you have a wounded animal to go looking for. Truthfully the smallest to be used here should be is the 7 mm magnums and then moving up to 300 magnums or 338 magnums. I used rifles from 7 mm Rem mag - 300 WBY mag // 8 mm Remington magnum that is fantastic! and a 338 win mag . I am about to re-barrel a Weatherby mark 5 in 8 mm RUM that is a 300 RUM necked up to 8mm
Great content! Love listening to anything western hunting. Looking to get a 300WM myself, so I will definitely check this one out. I I've hunted with the tikka chambered in 6.5 and it's been fantastic
🕵️♂️ Did You Know That Your 300 WM has 40% + More Recoil Than My 270 Winchester, Depending Upon the Load? Not Helpful For Accuracy, Now Is It? I Don't Need a Muzzle Break or a 26" Barrel and a Heavier Rifle To Get The Job Done Either! 😜
270 is a fantastic caliber. In the past I hardly ever went above 270 or 308 but now with muzzle breaks and suppression it's great to shoot extra juice without the extra recoil.
These guys crack me up🤔😳😂 60+ year gun collector hunter and reloader and I have never heard so much BS on hunting rifles! Most hunting rifles if they are sighted in properly and using the right bullet and you have practiced enough will take any game needed in the lower 48 states! I have hunted with just about every brand and you don’t need an 4k dollar rifle to hunt but you do need to practice and know your game and how they survive and live!
True, but what about pride of ownership, which builds shooting confidence? I, too, own/ shot/ have owned most, including cheap to custom. Custom is better.
Just found y'all and really digging the content so far. Can't wait to see what y'all do with the channel in the future!
Got a 6.5 creed bergara for small game and 6.5-300 Weatherby for big game.
That 6.5 - 300 is a wicked fast set up! Thanks for your feedback!

300 win mag is a great cartridge another old western favorite is the 7mm remington magnum!
7mm rem mag here. 160gr nosler partitions. Those tikkas look beautiful
7 rem mag is a great cartridge! Thanks for you help on our chanel!

Browning x bolt western hunter long range. Amazing rifles
That browning makes good guns. Especially in that x-bolt series. Have you been able to harvest animals with it yet?
Also, what caliber did you choose?
HNT26 with pierce engineering 17 oz SA 6.5 PRC
Bergara carbon wilderness ridge in 7PRC would make an awesome western rifle
How did you guess what I wanted next!!! That would be killer sweet! When are you getting one?

Thanks Dave! We will be comparing 300 wm to several other calibers. Hoping to do a dedicated vid on 30-06 and 270 in the near future.
Excellent
You May Also Want to Include the 280 AI Too?
🤭 Heck, What About the 35 Whelen, 300 wsm, and 7mm prc while your at it?

I did see those! That 270 is a fantastic round! I just got one in this Tikka t3x looking forward to testing it on elk sometime. Thanks for watching!!

Sounds like an amazing set up! I love how light that sounds. I have a 270 as well in Tikka t3x. It's an amazing round.
Most hunters take game within 200-300 yards, even in open country. With practicality, availability and cost 30-06 is the way to go
With that ignorance speak for yourself.
