I currently use a component cable and HDMI converter to connect my original Xbox to the receiver, this will save some clutter if it's just as good, if not better.
Also curious about how this compares to a converter (component to HDMI). I can use an Component->HDMI converter with my Wii, PS2, original XBOX, etc. so I feel like it would be a more flexible option for less money unless this HDMI cable or the Pound one is actually going to look better and have less lag. I like Metal Jesus but I do understand what you mean. He had a video about Monoprice component cables and he said it was great quality. @@DarylWiseJr I think it's weird how people think it's better than component even though the OG Xbox uses component. A component signal is still used even if converted, meaning you're still at the mercy of component. Like Adam said he wanted, all it has to do is be as good as component.
@@DarylWiseJr And they'd be right if they were talking about PS3/PS4 generations. HDMI usually outputs 1080p or higher so people think that's what these cables do. So they are wrong in this instance but think they're right because in the right context they would be right.

Disappointing, though in my opinion component is still currently the way to go over a passive HDMI adapter anyway due compatibility and also it's ability to be paired with a FrameMeister which does an amazing job handling with the 480i games and can also improve 480p and 720p games quite nicely too so long as you use a good custom profile. A good quality adapter that actually upscales 480i content to improve compatibility would be very interesting though.

8:17 and again, if you're using a PAL device, it's not worth modifying the console unless you have a game that can do 720p or 1080i. Because 576i is already a higher resolution than 480i and if your HDTV is good at deinterlacing then end result will be higher resolution than 480p anyway. I once had a softmod on my Xbox, and I disabled it soon after when it became clear it was a downgrade. The games I had could only do 480p and it looked much worse than they did at 576i. They looked compressed with much more pronounced aliasing.
I got this cable today and it works GREAT. I have a modded Xbox and I played both Xbox games and several emulators and it looks as good as my official Microsoft Xbox component cable. I didn't experience any issues with artifacts on the screen like the wavy lines. And I displayed in different resolutions from 480i to 720p. No noticeable input lag either. Played a few hours of Halo and it looked and played awesome. Adam, I think some of the issues with this (or the Pound Cable) might have to do with the brand of HDTV you have. I have a 1080p Sony. Sony's tend to work pretty well with a lot of these types of cables, from my experience. I've heard this cable has issues with some Samsung tv's. I don't know about other brands. Sorry yours didn't work that well.
I have the Hyperkin Wii HDMI cable and I'm surprised how good it actually is. Waaaay better video quality than those Chinese component to hdmi converters. No artifacts, or blurriness with the Hyperkin cable.. everything looks, sharp and no noticeable input lag. Hopefully, it holds up over the long term.
You can use upscalers to give you an artificial 480p just to hit a benchmark, but I REALLY would not recommend that. Mod the console, unlock the higher resolution modes.
There is a list out there somewhere that will tell you if a game supports 16:9 (Widescreen) modes. Some games support 480P or 720P and also have a widescreen option and some don't support widescreen at all. Also, I've read that most games can only do either 480p or Widescreen, so if you use 480P mode it will only work in 4:3, but if you run it in 480i you can use widescreen (where supported).
Plenty do, the original Xbox is amazing with 5.1 audio, and this is one reason why the official Microsoft cables along with the Monster (and its extremely rare proprietary adapter that was sold separately back in the day) and Psyclone go for $50-$100+ these days. If only Microsoft had built that connector onto the actual console, they never put that directly on an Xbox console until the Xbox 360 S.
Xbox OG had better digital audio than the PS2. PS2 had DD Pro Logic II (which is compressed 5.1), Xbox had straight Dolby Digital - better quality. on the HD AV Pack it is Toslink not SPDIF. some people have modded the xbox to have a digital audio port straight on the back.
It's possible to mod the system by bridging a couple jumpers and then soldering two points to an RCA female jack to get coax digital audio. I did it years ago, and have been very happy with the result.
Lucky me, the TV I just got actually supports 480i through HDMI. I plan to eventually use official HD AV Kit coupled with an OSSC or a Retrotink2X, but this or the Pound cable seems like a nice stopgap in the meantime just so I can actually play my OG Xbox, until I can afford such a solution.
If you are having issues with wavy screen using these types of cables. You will need to replace a set of caps that manage power on the XBOX as they are old. The pound cable can get around this if you USB power it.
5:10. Holding both triggers and thumbsticks didn't do anything on my original v1.0 xbox. Why don't I have any video settings other than just the screen size
@@Wilson_Racing Well, you have options. It depends on your set-up. I can't say I actually recommend this, it's just a lot better than what you're currently using.
I would still like a best possible video quality for the og Xbox video. I know the answer I just find them entertaining... The best video quality you can get is absolutely with composite cables. Sorry I couldn't even say that without projectile vomiting
Ithe HDMI cable that you are talking about now for the original Xbox I have had a problem the problem that I am having with it is that I lose picture when I am playing a game and then the picture comes back on what can I do so that It doesn't do that
Adam, Settings Widescreen isn't a pre-requsite to get any of these analog to digital HDMI cables working, is that correct? If I don't want to deal with the way Xbox handles things like anamorphic widescreen I can just turn on 480p and 720p and leave the Xbox screen setting as Normal instead of Widescreen and play everything (even widescreen) supported games in 4:3 is that correct? Thank you
I have to wonder why hyperkin just happens to release both a dreamcast and xbox cable out of the blue after pound releases the same product? I wonder if they just reverse engineered the v1 pound cables? Or perhaps they are the same company?
Is there any you would recommend for Europe/PAL? As long as 480i can run well from it i'd be happy due to the monitor i'm using. I have the offical Scart cables which is the best we have here in Europe but for future proofing it be nice to have a simple alternative. From reviews of such cables, depending on the version of xbox, later versions of the console in Europe do not work. I'm not sure why?
I get bad signal/signal lost with this cable alot. GTA III and VC has weird picture problem where I can only see half of the screen.. like wtf. Gonna surely get the original hd av pack and not these 3rd party cables which are not guaranteed to work 😢
Thank you for clarifying the option to get the dashboard to show up. However i have a question and that is have you ever had the cable just cut out for a few seconds and then come back ? It's happened twice now for me and idk if it's because i'm revision 1.6b
You mean brief black screen? If so, do you have the setup as follows: Xbox --> Hyperkin Cable --> TV Or... Xbox --> Hyperkin Cable --> Something like a switch or receiver --> TV
@@AdamKoralik thank you for getting back to me. It's the second one. Xbox--> Hyperkin --> Switcher --> Elgato. But i also have the mClassic hooked up to it though i don't think that caused anything. If that's the reason it's doing that what would you suggest to correct it ? Because i record and live stream and it did the brief black screen during one of my recordings.
@@MattsGeekCorner Yep, there's the problem. It's the HDMI switch. The signal strength isn't good enough for that. Annoying as this is, you either need to get rid of that or do this: Xbox --> Hyperkin --> mClassic --> Switch ---> El Gato. Or Xbox --> Hyperkin --> mClassic --> El Gato.
@@AdamKoralik I'll try plugging straight into the elgato through the second option because i think the setup i have now is the first one that you just listed. But if i eliminate the mClassic would it still work the same way as option two ? Honestly i only have the switcher because of my PS3 but it made everything convenient lol.
The mClassic includes an HDMI repeater, which enhances the signal strength. That's why placing it BEFORE the switch is good. But I see why that's annoying.
mcable should make PS2, dreamcast, and OG Xbox HDMI cables. I'll stick with my monster component cables until my TV dies and you can't get component input on new TVs.
About only half of the library is supported, and many games had technical issues, such as crashing, audio/video glitches, and slower framerates. It's a decent option, but not ideal. web.archive.org/web/20100107145453/www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitysupportissues.htm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360#List_of_compatible_Xbox_games
Depends on the game honestly, but generally speaking, no. Xbox 360 more or less emulates the OG Xbox so their are a whole slew of compatibility issues and glitches even on the games it does support backward compatibility for. There is a list on wikipedia I believe that should have detailed information about glitches and other problems for OG Xbox games running on a 360.
@@BigOnAnime94 Okay good to know, I don't have very many xbox games so I might just play them on the 360 since they do work just fine for what I can tell. I don't have a original xbox either so my only option right now is the 360 which the model I have is the slim.
I run my OG Xbox on an old 14" CRT, using a decent RGB Scart cable (TV doesn't have component). Realistically, would you say it's worth me grabbing one of these, modding my Xbox as I'm in a PAL region. Or just sticking with Scart?
I mean, personally yes. But that's really more your call. It would be a lot more work, especially because you have a PAL unit. Obviously you'd need an HDMI TV as well. Though between this or the Pound version, I'd go Pound. Ultimately, up to you.
@@AdamKoralik it's a tough choice, I'm not exactly getting a bad image with my Xbox, if anything it's in line with what I remember when I was playing it all them years ago. Might just flip a coin on this one, there's equal good and bad points for me. Fyi, loving the videos as always 👌
Can you use 480p and 720p without widescreen? I'd rather preserve the aspect ratio than crop in and lose some top and bottom information and make everything look skinny.
If a game supported 720p native, it also supported widescreen native. 480p, it was a mix. But yeah you can adjust it. Though an mClassic makes that way easier.
Does it depend on what type of tv u got because I got all the tool u said in this video and none of my game come out as crystal clear it still look blurry!!
Wow super bummed out to hear i have to mod my Xbox purely because i live me in Australia. Don't want to mod my Xbox as it's a Halo Edition and mint condition at that.. So that's game over for me and back to the drawing board. Thanks for the information mate.
I have a very good component cable with optical audio + a/c HDMI adapter + Mcable = great image quality on my LG 65 oled 4K. The only issue is the audio go away, is like mute mode, not all the time but this is annoying issue it takes about 30 mins to 40 mins to the audio returns or just turn off & turn on the XBOX until audio returns. This is the only issue that I have. Does the pound has that issue with the Mcable? Please let me know. Also great honest review, you deserve 🏆
8:12 576i! 576i! FIVE SEVEN SIX I!!!! How many times do I have to say that?! 480i is 720*480 pixels at 30fps interlaced. In PAL regions it's 720*576 pixels at 25 frames interlaced. So in PAL regions we get a somewhat higher resolution but a framerate more closer to that of conventional roll film.
@@AdamKoralik I know, I know. All I ask is try getting in the habit of remembering the PAL equivalents the next time you make one of these videos. For those of us in PAL regions, the 576i modes may actually be preferable than 480i or even 480p. Both are lower resolutions that what we use down here in Australia. The only advantage to using NTSC modes is higher frame rates. In my tests, Xbox 576i content over RGB SCART upscaled to 1080p actually looked better than 576i deinterlaced to 576p over the official Xbox component cables. ruclips.net/video/U_0QrN1ZCTQ/видео.html BTW, there's an easy way to get ALL Xbox games uploaded to 720p or 1080p over HDMI. You still have that old SCART to HDMI scaler? It has a HDMI input. If you plug the Pound or Hyperkin cable into the HDMI input, it upscales everything to 720p or 1080p. Even 240p and 288p content! It works for the Wii and PS2 HDMI adapters, it should do the trick with Xbox HDMI cables. ruclips.net/video/W9sNKqpOkaw/видео.html
So you need to have at least the component cables to switch the resolution first? Was thinking of getting the pound cable but currently only have the yellow, red and white cable.
@@AdamKoralik I think you are missing what I'm saying. My cable is currently rhe basic red, white and yellow. You can select widescreen but you have no options for resoultion. So my question was, if you needed at least the component cable to have the option?
Then yeah, you need at least the component cables to see the HD options. This cable would also allow you to see them. Only issue is again most HDTVs don't support 480i via an HDMI input. So you might need to configure it on a computer monitor or something first.
I’m currently have an issue with figuring out how to get the screen resolution option to pop up. When I go into video settings on my Xbox it only give the option to switch between normal, letterbox, and wide screen.
So although in the UK anything above 480i isn't supported by the Xbox without modding, will this cable still work and carry the 480i signal just cleaning it up?
It likely wouldn't work as most HDMI inputs don't support 480i. Though I don't remember off hand if this does some upscaling on its own to compensate for that issue.
Im in the uk and the hyperkin cable wouldn't work with my smart tv, however i plugged the hdmi into my psvr computer unit and i have a decent picture. Could anyone explain this? Is it to do with the hdmi version or is it reverting the picture?
I'm not a fan of interlaced resolutions. I personally think 720p is superior to 1080i. I disable interlaced whenever there's support for a progressive scan option.

You do the best comparison videos and would love to see your conclusions
do you have a component cable plugged in or just standard AV cable? If I'm not mistaken, the component cable has to be plugged in in order to be given an option to select a resolution.

Will ur knowledge on these systems have u ever ran across this problem and what can I do to fix it. I had it color matched,so idk? Oh mine is a version 1.6
How do you get to the other resolutions for the Original Xbox because for me I can only get the type of screen like letterbox, normal and widescreen. Do I need to get a type of cable to get the other resolutions or do I need to mod my Original Xbox.
I just got one of these for my OG Xbox and I think it looks good. But I have a problem...it loses signal for like a second once in a while...and I have no idea how to fix that. I heard if you use it on 4k TVs this might happen but I don’t know if that’s the reason.
@@AdamKoralik I tried both ways. Same result. But then I tried a 1080p tv as I saw some comments on amazon saying that it has issues with 4k displays. It's possible to mod the system by bridging a couple jumpers and then soldering two points to an RCA female jack to get coax digital audio. I did it years ago, and have been very happy with the result.
@@AdamKoralik How do you use the Mcable with original xbox?
Big Adam in the house
Lucky me, the TV I just got actually supports 480i through HDMI. I plan to eventually use official HD AV Kit coupled with an OSSC or a Retrotink2X, but this or the Pound cable seems like a nice stopgap in the meantime just so I can actually play my OG Xbox, until I can afford such a solution.
If you are having issues with wavy screen using these types of cables. You will need to replace a set of caps that manage power on the XBOX as they are old. The pound cable can get around this if you USB power it.
Tnx for the video. I've decided to go with the Pound cable + mCable and the reason is since I can't use the mCable on Hyperkin.
Great review Adam.
5:10. Holding both triggers and thumbsticks didn't do anything on my original v1.0 xbox. Why don't I have any video settings other than just the screen size
How do you have it connected?
@@AdamKoralik I have the stock RCA cables if thats what you mean
That's why. If you're using composite cables the HD options won't appear.
@@AdamKoralik so do I need to get the product you are reviewing?
@@Wilson_Racing Well, you have options. It depends on your set-up. I can't say I actually recommend this, it's just a lot better than what you're currently using.
Hyperkin should make a disc drive replacement for the OG Xbox... They should also make an SSD replacement kit too haha!
Maybe Hyperkin can just make a new OG Xbox Classic with native HDMI support and can still run disc games... I can only dream.
@@iamtheliquor809 I'm dreaming with you......................
I just bought an IDE to SATA for $10 and then plugged in my own SSD and it works great! Don't forget to swap out the 40-wire IDE to 80-wire.
The pound isn't the only competition tho, there's the Myriann cable from Aliexpress too. Hope you test it one day :)
I would still like a best possible video quality for the og Xbox video. I know the answer I just find them entertaining... The best video quality you can get is absolutely with composite cables.
Sorry I couldn't even say that without projectile vomiting
I kinda wished you used more games to display the differences in quality vs different cables. All I really saw was MX vs ATV with the same playback.
Uh, yeah, that's the whole point. So you can see the same thing through all the options.
@@AdamKoralik Yes, but other games with higher quality textures might be a better choice instead.
@@Siknik64As there's only five games that support all the resolutions, my options were rather limited.

Will it work with the mcable classic because I own the hyperlink but was wondering if the mclassic will improve it
I have a 1.6v Xbox 🤦🏽♂️I wonder if this will work
I bought this and tv goes black for a few seconds when playing. Doesn’t happen when I use original AV cables. Any help?
Did you connect it directly to a TV or through some kind of switch box or receiver or something?
Ithe HDMI cable that you are talking about now for the original Xbox I have had a problem the problem that I am having with it is that I lose picture when I am playing a game and then the picture comes back on what can I do so that It doesn't do that
From what I can tell by many people's consensus is that these extrnal converters are not that great.
Typically, yeah.
Honestly running 1080i content on a 1080p screen is a bad idea to begin with. Since that adds the much more complex issue of deinterlacing.
Agreed.
I've knowdest that the cable that you are talking about it was a tight fit to the tv but other than that it worked great
Adam,
Settings Widescreen isn't a pre-requsite to get any of these analog to digital HDMI cables working, is that correct?
If I don't want to deal with the way Xbox handles things like anamorphic widescreen I can just turn on 480p and 720p and leave the Xbox screen setting as Normal instead of Widescreen and play everything (even widescreen) supported games in 4:3 is that correct?
Thank you
It'll still display, but you won't get the most out of it.
love your vids man :)
Damn someone just gave me this for Xmas , my luck
I got the same cable and i get black screen. I dont have the settings to change it to 480 720 or 1080. i have the europe xbox pal
That's why. The European models need to be modded first.
@@AdamKoralik thx for your answer
I'd recommend modding the console to be honest.
If so, do you have the setup as follows:
Xbox --> Hyperkin Cable --> TV
Or...
Annoying as this is, you either need to get rid of that or do this:
Xbox --> Hyperkin --> mClassic --> Switch ---> El Gato.
Or
Xbox --> Hyperkin --> mClassic --> El Gato.
I'll stick with my monster component cables until my TV dies and you can't get component input on new TVs.
i have component on my new tv
Is it better to just play the original xbox games on the xbox 360?
About only half of the library is supported, and many games had technical issues, such as crashing, audio/video glitches, and slower framerates. It's a decent option, but not ideal.
web.archive.org/web/20100107145453/www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitysupportissues.htm
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Xbox_games_compatible_with_Xbox_360#List_of_compatible_Xbox_games

That would be the first time I've heard of that.
Don't have the ability to change the video in the middle of you watching it sir.
In my tests, Xbox 576i content over RGB SCART upscaled to 1080p actually looked better than 576i deinterlaced to 576p over the official Xbox component cables.
ruclips.net/video/U_0QrN1ZCTQ/видео.html
BTW, there's an easy way to get ALL Xbox games uploaded to 720p or 1080p over HDMI.

@@AdamKoralik I figured it out. I'm using rca cables loool
So you need to have at least the component cables to switch the resolution first? Was thinking of getting the pound cable but currently only have the yellow, red and white cable.
Not really, the problem is most HDMI inputs don't support 480i. But if yours does, then you wouldn't have that problem.
@@AdamKoralik I think you are missing what I'm saying. My cable is currently rhe basic red, white and yellow. You can select widescreen but you have no options for resoultion. So my question was, if you needed at least the component cable to have the option?
@@trenchtiger8599 Correct, unless you have a PAL Xbox. In which case, the console needs to be modified first.
@@AdamKoralik I doubt it is a PAL. I'm in the US.
Same
Yep same
So although in the UK anything above 480i isn't supported by the Xbox without modding, will this cable still work and carry the 480i signal just cleaning it up?
It likely wouldn't work as most HDMI inputs don't support 480i. Though I don't remember off hand if this does some upscaling on its own to compensate for that issue.
@@AdamKoralik ah crap, I guess I should go for a refund
Im in the uk and the hyperkin cable wouldn't work with my smart tv, however i plugged the hdmi into my psvr computer unit and i have a decent picture. Could anyone explain this? Is it to do with the hdmi version or is it reverting the picture?
Your TV doesn't support 480i input, apparently the PSVR does.
Planning to connect the original Xbox to the monitor. Since the monitor doesn't have speakers, is there any way I can get audio?
Uh, maybe not with this particular cable, no. :/
