  • Well... you tell me, lol. I wish the apparent 2 dB volume difference wasn't there but if you'll adjust your volume up when the Dv77 is playing it helps to decide which might be better. I'm leaning towards the V30 - am I crazy?

    I didn’t know there’d be a ~2dB volume drop, so that could be it, but I think I like where the mids are placed better with the V30. I’ll give it a few more days...?

    I like the DV77 better. It came across sounding tighter in the bass and smoother in the highs. However, it would be interesting to hear both in a mix. The harsher V30 might cut better.

      Right on, the DV77 has been getting so much attention as the “V30 Killer” that I thought I’d give it try. It ended up in a Marshall extension cab and really sounds good paired with the Creamback I have in the Marshall combo.

      Funny you should mention the Mesa V30 cause my Rectoverb came with a “mesa UK made V30” and I hated it - very spiky and harsh imo. I went through a few speakers and settled on the Chinese made V30 and liked it quite a bit better. The dv-77 is a great speaker but too terrible different from the V30... tends towards Swampthang. Some time I’d like to try a Texas Heat in my Marshall, had a SwampThang in it but lost too much of the top end sparkle. Didn’t like the V30 in the Marshall either, went with a G12M Creamback but you know how it goes, lots of great amps and speakers out there, finding the matching that soothes the soul is the trick ;-)

      Speaker swaps are “hit and miss” imo and because you can’t often return a speaker, it can get expensive. I’ve settled on G12M Creambacks for Marshall type amps, DV77 for drop tuned metal and Heritage Greenback for rock - that’s my top three.

    Great vid. I’ve just bought a Fireball 25 and am in the market for a new cab. I have an old JCM900 with a 2x12 fitted with Celestion G12T-75’s and to my ear it sounds pretty crappy. I was considering the Engl 2x12 but a colleague suggested 120w capacity on the V30’s won’t get enough of a work-out with the Fireball 25. Bottom line: I’m confused! What’s your thoughts on the best cab fit for the Fireball 25 now that you’ve had a chance to live with it?

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  Год назад +1

      I agree that G12-75s are a bit flat, sometimes that's what you want but probably not with a Marshall or Engl. Your colleague may like the sound of "speaker distortion" versus amp distortion.Those V30s will respond great with that Engl and WON'T distort, so you'll just hear what your amp is putting out. Low watt speakers naturally break up at lower volumes producing a farty, flarpy sound that some guys really like. I prefer tight and punchy. I'd go with your Engl 2x12 (matching will just be sick!) and if you feel up to it, swap one of those V30s out for a Eminence SwampThang - if you tend towards hard rock/metal. Also between the brit made V30 and china made V30 I prefer the china version, go figure!?!?

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  Год назад +1

      @@MrSleskus I wouldn't say 'better' but would depend on the application. playing out live with a band, I'd go 2x12. Playing at home or the occasional small gig I'd go 1x12. Bigger cabs tend to have more bass and are naturally a bit louder cause you're pushing more air. I sometimes really like the honesty of a single, pushed 1x12.
