Is it Okay to NOT like the SLO30?
Sure it's okay, because tone is subjective, if it sounds good, it is good... but why would anyone NOT like the SLO30?!?!

Where is the Suhr PT15 Amp!?!? Pete Thorn Signature 15W

so 3 or 4 years ago Mr Thorn made the rounds, demoing his amp like a mad man, but sales since have been flat - can someone tell me why? When I do come across a rare forum comment, it's heralded as "one hell of a great amp!" so why then aren't they more popular?

Super easy mod, and very worth while. Will it turn your EL34 amp into a EVH Stealth? No... but still a very good mod.

Old Guy's Secret for the BEST Ol' Fashion
I used to run Dean markley blue steel medium acoustics on my metal rig. They sounded and played amazing for c standard.
COOL \m/
I think the main reason was price and that Suhr wasn't available in most stores. Sweetwater and Guitar Center just started carrying Suhr amps a few months ago so I expect they will see a little bump although unlike many of the brands on Sweetwater you don't see 48 month or 36 month financing which is also an issue for a lot of people. 99% of the musicians I know will wait until a 48 months no interest deal and then buy from Sweetwater. I've had a PT15IR for a couple years now. I got lucky and picked mine up used for around $1700. The matching 1x12 cab cost me another $600 though so it's definitely an investment, especially at full price although I've blown way more on amps in my life. In short for a review after my time with it, is it perfect and everything I could ever want? No, but I haven't found anything better to cover as much ground with as many features as well as the size and weight factor. I have a back issues so a head that is under 25lbs and a cab that is 30lbs allows me to keep the weight down when every pound matters. Size also makes it very easy to transport. I can hook straight to PA if needed with the IR which really does sound amazing. I am able to cover Pop, Funk, Jazz, Blues and Rock with the 3 channels easily. I usually include a tubescreamer on my board for a little lighter grit or if I need extra sustain goosing channel 3 but the more I've played and gotten the feel of the amp the more I've found I really don't need it unless I'm using a single coil guitar. The clean channel I can make sound 90% like the old Fenders I've had or more neutral like a good pedal platform clean amp (Laney Lionheart was one of my favorites). Channel 2 with gain at 4 with Humbuckers is every 70's Marshally rhythm classic rock sound for the most part. With a single coil strat it sounds like SRV (Tubescreamer/Fender combo). Channel 3 I have set to be louder with the gain around between 6 or 7 and adding a delay pedal it covers all of my leads. Another big thing for me, all the mini amps I have played (and I've played A LOT) sounded "smaller". They don't have the depth, girth and roaring sound of my larger 50-100w heads. This is the only smaller amp (under 20watts) that I have played that has that big amp sound and feel. So, what would I change? A nice built in Reverb would first because I need it for what I do and it's one less pedal needed. I actually prefer a footswtichable effects loop, but again that's something probably more specific to me and it's not a dealbreaker, or if the effects loop and channels could all be done by a standard midi cable I would take that option as well. Lastly I do wish the 3rd channel had a little different character where the harmonics just lept off the fretboard with a more liquid sustain that doesn't sound compressed or muddy, then it would probably be the end all perfect amp for me. My original Peavey 5150 amp was like that with the volume and gain at 6 on the lead channel. If it had that kind of feel and sound for leads it would probably be perfect for me personally. I have had a laundry list of probably over a hundred tube amps over the last two decades, most all of them the higher end stuff and vintage stuff. This amp is the most practical without compromising tone that I have found where I don't need a bunch of OD or Boost pedals. I did a bunch of direct comparisions when I bought it and have pretty much sold off everything else. For what I do, at this point in my life it's the best thing that I have been able to find.
Thanks for the informative post. I’ve been playing one now for about two weeks and am favoring the SLO30 - it’s just so simple. I can see why a person would really like the PT but for my style it’s the SLO. Maybe someday when I have an extra $1600 lying around, lol
My chassis doesn't want to pull out of the frame. Is it just the two screws on top?
I read that the single greatest improvement of the DSL series is a tweak that removes the fx loop, digital reverb and emulated output (ie all the digital shit). It involves just snipping two resistors and adding about 1" of cable. I'll report back when I've tried it (it may take time as I'm going to try using a switch so I can flick in reverb etc when I feel like it).
That’s be awesome, strange I’ve never run into this mod cause I’m always pouring over the net for such stuff. Can you provide the link? And YES, a switch would be great - I can’t live without an FX loop. Good luck \m/
@@oldguyjammin9732Huh. 1) I've posted the link several times but RUclips strips it back out... 2) Can't do the mod because I can't get the chassis out! I can't see any screws other than the four around the handle, but it seems well and truly jammed in. What is your technique/trick?
@@digitalchris6681 - there is a strip of double sided sticky tape between the top of the chassi (front) and the cabinet. I would invert the amp, so the chassi is resting in place and then, with a very fine tipped screw drive or knife blade, gently work the front of the amp free. Those four screws around the handle are the only one to remov.
@@oldguyjammin9732 done it! Thanks for the tip. And I've figured out how to disconnect the digital board without any messing with the pcb. I replied to you but again youtube stripped it out. If this post survives I'll send more info. Do you have the schematic? Mine is for the dsl15mkii but exactly the same as dsl20cr.
@@digitalchris6681 no, I have no schematics.

Thanks, "old guy" (you're a spring chicken compared to me though). After seeing your upload I bought a used DSL20 combo, swapped V1 for an AY7 (off ebay) and the speaker for the G12M (also used, so run in). Great. I then swapped V2 for a 5751 (70% of AX7 gain if I remember) I had lying around, and ... joy, all for £345 (approx $450).
Dang man, keep your eyes open for the cops rolling up cause you stole all that stuff \m/ thanks for sharing!
i got the 117 it's way too loose on C standard 😐 it's perfect for C# standard imo. But I play hard
Drop B works for me \m/
Hey! Been debating between these two! What it’s coming down to is volume. Is the engl any louder for jamming ????? Please help! lol thanks! I’m also playing 7 string lower tunings. Lots of chuggs but also fast leads. I have a 5150 iii 50 watt but it’s a bit too big and doesn’t have a built in noise gate
Amazing that both the Beatbuddy and SDrum are still the major drum pedals in 2024. Just want to add that I use the Solo XT with Jamsync connected to SDrum and the Solo XT has a display showing Tempo or BPM. You sold me on the SDrum in this video 😊 and saved me some money. I was considering selling the SDrum to try the Beatbuddy, but with the drawback that I would have a sync problem with my Solo XT looper which would mean buying more gear and Midi cables. Thank you great video 🙌
Right on \m/ to be honest, I’ve hung on to both. The BB is pretty awesome for mindless rhythms, the SDRUm for writing.
put 1 dv77 and 1 v30 in a 2x12 cab and it sounds great. 16 ohm speakers are brighter thats why i like 8ohm speakers better. Great video!
That’s at great mix \m/
You are a LEGEND for posting this video! Helped me fix my toilet for 6 bucks instead of the 1,500 some plumbing company wanted to charge me for installing a new toilet!
lol, glad it helped \m/ I had to replace that seal twice about 3 months apart but since then (a few years) it’s been good. The one in our bathroom has never needed a replacement seal…?
Very informative video, super helpful! I'm new to tube amps, and say if i wanted to use a different brand of 6L6GC tubes, does the 2.1-2.5V still apply? Or would I need bias probes and a multimeter to set the bias trim instead?
Welcome to the family! That’s a really nice beginning for your journey \m/ Brand of tube won’t change anything regarding the bias. I usually pay the extra dollar or two for a matched pair of tubes, but other than that, bias is as much feel and what you like than anything else. Petrucci from Dream Theatre biases cold and gets a whole tour out of his amps, Angus on the other hand biased his amps really hot and they would swap tubes every other show :-) I find that going a little cool just makes me feel good mentally, lol. I think it’s mostly noticeable in Marshall amps, hot bias more sizzle (fizz), cooler bias equals less fizz, more crunch!
@@oldguyjammin9732 gotcha, thank you so much for the informative reply! I really appreciate it! \m/
I think your finger is rubbing against the camera mic.
Yep, wasn’t that terrible? Live and learn \m/ easy and worthwhile mod though.

You really can’t go wrong with the DSL5, awesome little combo and no need for an extra cab. I outfitted my DSL5CR with a 12” speaker :-) love that amp.
@@oldguyjammin9732 muchas gracias por ese dato.
I had the Spark... naw, same thing - no character.
At least the Spark has some really cool features, this Mini 30 is just terrible. I bet the Spark version of the Soldano sounds way better \m/
It's a BOOST, not a different Voice. They're using VOICE in place of the work BOOST!!!!
But as we all know “voicing” implies a different circuit, not just added gain or volume \m/ who do they think they’re fooling? Laney is guilty of the same, their ‘dirty’ channel is just the crunch channel with more gain ~ same voicing.
@@oldguyjammin9732 That's all it is, a BOOST with MORE GAIN! NOT a different Voice which you would think being a VOICE Switch. It's just MORE GAIN!! And being that it's already EQ'd as an Vox AC sound your limited on wht EQ is left!
Nice Demo and Review!! I bought the EL34 Combo and EVERY TIME I switched Channels I had to RE-EQ the Amp!!! It would be great for Studio Work but as a LIVE Amp it was terrible!!! I returned it and the Sales Engineer thought I was making a Big Mistake. Well I'm NOT paying that kind of money for something that doesn't work as stated!! If it has two Channels then I expect it to be two usable Channels! I Called Blackstar and their Tech told me I was using it wrong, Pick a Channel and use a Pedal Board!!! WHAT???? If I wanted Pedals for my Gain I wouldn't have bought a two Channel Amp!! The problem is Blackstars because they've already EQ'd each Channel!!!! The EL34 is supposed to be a Twin Clean Channel and the Gain is supposed to be a Vox AC30 EQ. So now you're screwed!!! There's not enough EQ adjustment left to find a Happy Medium between BOTH Channels!!!
I feel your pain, I’ve tried again and again with Blackstar but just never had. They might take one pedal well but if you add another the tone goes south. My other amps will allow stacking 2, 3 even 4 pedals and still sounds good. Shared EQs are just something you have to deal with unless you get the big box :-)
how does a footswitch control both channel and a boost from just one lead and a mono plug, that's what i don't get
that’s a good question, most two button switches that I’ve seen have had stereo plugs, but my EVH amp has a 4 button foot switch and works with either a mono or stereo cable!?!?!
Thank you it’s so easy to take the simplicity of pickups for granted, jk, well I run mine right next to the strings so my harmonics are louder and my amp sounds like it is alive breathing like Darth Vader 😂 and I also have my drummer upset with me too which is cool man cas now I’m covering him up with pick scratching keeping the beat you think he would thank me because I was a drummer first / note to self don’t play a drummer time and cover up the snare by chopping on the snare time you’re not the drummer if you are playing a guitar if you have a drummer that is 😂 awe the good old days, nice video. Many of us are scratching are heads saying I think I’ve had my head to close to the pickups too.
This is a fantastic review and comparison. Thank you so very much.
You got it! I have to tell you that I have kept both and move back and forth between the two. The beat buddy can very inspiring as you move between genres and styles.
@@oldguyjammin9732 , after reading a lot of reviews, watching many videos of real users and their diverse opinions/experiences with both units, I ended up ordering an SDRUM about an hour ago. Your review was one of the most honest and objective ones I saw and again I thank you for that. I can't wait to get my hands on this thing and start creating. I'm sure it'll be an amazing tool.
Nice video. With the two gains knobs do you need an attenuater for bedroom levels? Thank you
One of the best tones is to turn the clean channel up til it starts to get crunchy, but as you do it does start getting a bit loud. 3 or 4 and it starts o break up, but stuff in the room will start to rattle as well. The dirty side can be turned down regardless of gain.
nice vid~~ im kinda late for the party, but maybe its never too late~~ one question, i know its not the purpose of the speaker changing, but does it get louder from 10' to 12' ??? if it does, is the difference significant ?
That’s a good question, and while I did not take any volume measurements I will say that the 12” will move more air, that can sometimes equate to more volume. Like a 1x12 cab vs 2x12… same speakers just more air. Speaker volume is determined by the efficiency value. A more efficient speaker of similar type will be louder than the less efficient one. WGS is kind of known for having more efficient (louder) speakers than say Celestion.
I bought my SS22 in 2012 & it’s been an amazing amp right out of the box . This amp is is so versatile & you can play just about any genre of music without using many effects . The clean channel sounds like Twin ,maybe even better IMHO & the overdrive is is just wow & you do not need a peddle for more overdrive for this 😮🙂 I have 3 guitars that I play through , a G&L Fullerton Deluxe Comanche , a Fullerton Classic Bluesboy Deluxe & a Fender Big Apple Strat & they all sound incredible 🙂👍
Yep, it’s bitchin’ \m/ and play out ready.
Bias should be close to 35.0 for each EL34 Valve.
I prefer mine a bit cooler with Marshall amps, but to each his own.
*** Regarding the LBX-S *** I see lots of questions about the bias adjuster and it's location given the stealth has rear accessible bias ports. The adjuster screw is underneath the tube cage by V5 preamp tube... no need to remove bottom panel to PCB
We’ll just PIN that there bit of helpful info \m/ much appreciated.
I did the C137 snip. Much better but still something lacking. So I added a 1uF 200V cap to the empty C28 position (which the 6L6 has from factory) .. Much better, with slightly more gain in the upper mods.
That’s some awesome info right there - let’s Pin It \m/ and thanks!
I love Rainy days 🌧️. Also love my mono price 15 Watt amp
Haha, way to go bluesman, this is our time of year, eh? Play on…
Ceriatone just came out with their SLO clones. 100 and 50 watt versions, point-to-point wired. Comes stock in snakeskin.
Oh nice, have to check that out \m/
Point to point is just a nice way of saying you're not gonna get two ampd which sound consistent. Your SLO might sound great whilst someone else's will be crap.
@BrunodeSouzaLino It's easier for an amateur to wire up less-than spec components (or for a greedy company to cut costs on individual components), for sure. From a serviceability angle, P2P will always be superior to PCB.
@@eyeofamon if anything, P2P makes it harder to service because you're opening your circuits to mechanical vibrations which can knock components and connections loose, since none of those amps have any form of vibration dampening on connections. Or you end up with intermittent issues because the solder joint on one leg or wire cracked and it moves ever so slightly under certain conditions.
@@BrunodeSouzaLino Every service tech I've spoken to in the past 40 years has said they much prefer working on P2P, with some even going so far as to say they refuse to work on amps that are all-PCB.
I hope anyone who is watching this knows not to touch anything inside the tube amp chassis without first draining the capacitors first.
Guess I should open with that, eh? Good idea… I used to, hmmm…
Do you have a reverb page that you’ll be selling your gear? If not, where do you sell it? Thanks
I usually use Craig’s List. Just sold my EL34 5150iii and JVM205. Currently have my Friedman Little Sister for $795 and an Orange Brent Hinds for $425 on the block.
I’ve always wanted a Soldano after playing one once a long time ago…sold me on the 30 Stellar playing by the way 😎🎸
Thanks man, it’s all subjective… would I have loved it 10 years ago? Probably not cause I was into a different style of low tuned, chugging tightness, lol. But it’s tight enough for me these days and I really love it all the way around. I know I can rely on it, get it repaired if need be, and… embarrassingly, love that it says Soldano across the front \m/
Click bait title, ya I fell for it😂 Pepsi shirt really dad😂 learn how to use a EQ and learn how to gain stage, your clipping like 🤪
Sounds good, thanks
Caught that. Tight tight yuh. Just keep bring me this blue stuff. Lmao.
NICE - great show, good catch!
Sounds good to me old guy! Hey, do you still have that Stage Right tube 15? If so, what is your opinion of it now, a couple of years later?
I don’t have it anymore… kept upgrading. I’d still say it’s worth every penny of its price. Not sure what it’s going for these days but if you can swing the DSL5 I’d go that route. I really like that little amp.
Is it worth just going for the SLO-100?
Probably, bigger amps usually have more thump and fullness, but not having played the 100 can’t say for sure.
Sounds great as slo's always do! What cabs and speakers have you run it through, and what's become your favorites?
I’ve run it through Heritage 30 closed back, a DV-77 closed back and a G12M-65 open back. The G12 open is my favorite, lets it breath a bit.
fuk%/_ koolllll man 👍🏽🎸🎸🎸👍🏽
Absolutely \m/
So red wire to end of C137 cap. Which leg does that red wire attach to the mini toggle though ?
since it’s either ON or OFF it won’t matter which pin on the toggle switch you connect to, either pin will work.
I,d liked you to have shown the low wattage option from the marshall. Big selling point. But to me the marshall sounded too raspy, probably due to the 10 speaker.
I fitted mine with a 12” Greenback without too much trouble. For even more “Low wattage” the DSL1 thru a cab is just as good and for whatever reason, the reverb is better. The Marshall does have a little more top end sizzle (fizz) than the Blackstar, but imo it takes pedals way better.
@@oldguyjammin9732 thanks a lot for the extra info. I finally decided on a 5150 iconic 15w combo, wich can be set down to 3w. Hopefully it won't be too loud for the livingroom.
@@oldguyjammin9732Hello (old geezer here too 😅). Can you recommend a cab for DSL-1 I got the combo but am looking for either another combo or cab?
@@Michel-r6m - I’d stay with an open back cab and look for an oversized (larger) one like the Peavey, Friedman or Solano… however those cabs are gonna cost you plenty. How about making your own and spending your dough on a Celestion G12M-65 speaker? If you want to have your stuff match, which is really nice (I like it too) the Marshall 1x12 cab is fine but the speaker leaves a lot to be desired. You’ll have to stick with a 16 ohm cab. If you have space you can sometimes find Marshall 4x12 cabs for almost the same price as a single cab - maybe that?
@@oldguyjammin9732 Thank you for your quick reply 🤠 Well a 1x12 would do since I live in an appartment 😅 The MX112 seems ok but nothing to rave about yet goes for about $299... Open back yes I totally understand your point. Just looking for either a cab (16ohms) or another combo and sell the DSL-1. Two suspects are a Roland JC-22 (ch/rev/serial & parallel fx loop, stereo 🤫) as the bigger DSL-5 (2ch with gain control, fx loop, pedal included, reverb, 10" Celestion, power att. 5/ 0.5 Watts). The cab $299, DSL-5 $369 and JC-22 $499 the DSL and JC sound totally different yet I like both.
These amps are junk!
Oh c’mon man, this line of Marshall’s is a budget friendly entry into that hugely massive and popular “Marshall tone” \m/ they’re great and any beginner would be lucky to have one. Do they compare to my SLO30 or JVM410, no, but my little DSL5 gets more hours on it than anything else - love it!
@@oldguyjammin9732 well, I am an amp tech, and have seen plenty of these things on the bench. I would never recommend one. Built very cheaply, and terrible solder joints throughout. Just be very careful when changing those preamp tubes!
@@searing7549 - lol, now I get you and ‘yes’ for longevity and ease of repair I would not go the Marshall route. I always pull my amps apart and I’d never be able to trouble shoot a Marshall unlike an Engl, Egnater or Soldano which use larger, discreet components. Still, “junk” may be a bit strong, lol. Thanks for all you do for us weekend warriors \m/ Much appreciation for you and yours.
Thank you sir first time encountering this your video was very helpful
You’re welcome, I’ve only had to replace seals this one time.
I like it better with the mod and perfer the the marshall tone too.
Right on :-)
I know it's an old post... But I am wondering if you figured out how to deal with the "fx loop insert muting the preamp signal" issue... Can't just simply use a delay or chorus padel in the loop because it will cut all the preamp signal out...
Sorry, not aware of the issue. I’ve since sold several amps and recently picked up a SLO30. Can you use use a patch cable?
@@oldguyjammin9732 Thank you for your kindly reply! Today I figured out that I made a mistake setting my fx unit send and return level to 0....
honestly out of the 20ish Amps Ive owned ovver the years, All of them seem to take pedals well. I honestly dont know of any current amps that dont take pedals well. Most have an effects loop & even if they dont have an effects loop you can simply run the pedal into the front usually. Just sayin so many people mention an amp takes pedals well , but imo thats the norm, taking pedals well. Its expected on any even mediocre amp. Finding an amp that DOESNT take pedals well is the challenge lol.
I get what you’re saying, perhaps it’s the range of pedals an amp takes well? For example, I have a Mythical Overdrive that sounds amazing through my SLO30 but over compresses terribly through my Invective mh. My SLO30 and EVH Stealth seam to take ‘everything’ while the Invective and Friedman Little Sister are a little more picky. It really comes down to matching amp to pedals for your ultimate rig \m/
My reverb quit working. I have the Rectoverb 25 head & I got it new about a yr ago 😪
Did you remove the hot mod? And why are you adding a new bright cap switch instead of changing the value of the original bright cap? It would be nice to have a presence or a tone cut knob instead of a switch.
I’ve had the hot mod in and out, it does really change the gain but doesn’t change the voicing of the amp, even with the tight/cut switch engaged the amp still has a ‘woof’ to it. The cap mod is really worthwhile imo. The amp is best suited for classic rock, blues, even jazz rather than harder rock, i.e. 80’s Hagar. Re a knob vs switch, variable capacitors are much different than variable resistors.
I’ve gone back and forth on the bright cap thing. Currently mine is back in and will probably stay there. It is all personal preference. Similarly, I have changed the cold clipper resistor a bunch of times and it is back to the original value. Go figure.
Why I always make the bright caps switchable, best of both worlds. I’ve learned it’s usually best to leave things the way ‘really smart engineers’ made them :-) I’ve ‘ruined’ more stuff trying to make it better, lol
I was wrong money can definitely buy more stuff.
