Racing 50 miles of our favorite trails (plus Escapod trailer tour!)

- In today's video we're heading to Glorieta, one of our favorite spots to ride in New Mexico, to race the GloriDays 50-mile Blaze of Glory. This is a new event and one to put on your bucket list because it has a little bit of everything -- a big climb up to 10,000 feet, a proper backcountry mountain bike descent and a good sampling of Glorieta's fast, fun flow trails.
But first, we're going to give you a tour of what might be our next adventure vehicle. After seven years of van life, 2 years of basic tent life...is it time for tear drop trailer life? When our friends Chris and Jen offered to lend us one of their Escapod trailers for a couple weeks, we couldn't say no. And it definitely came in handy for this race weekend.

Can I just say to whoever (I have always assumed Syd) does the editing, that I appreciate the extra work and effort being done to provide metric conversions. While I'm old enough to remember distance and elevation in miles and feet, it has been soooo long since using those constantly that I really appreciate the metric conversion figures always provided.
Yes. It's easy thing to do in the edit but many don't do it.
What an inspiring couple you two are. Thank you for taking us all along.
What I appreciate most about your channel is the sportsmanship and trail etiquette you show on this vlog
Thanks for putting the metric measurements, it’s makes it easy to relate 🤘🤘
Wow, double 1st places! OUTSTANDING! 😎
I've got to stop reading the comments before watching the vids... always ruin it for myself 😂
@@funiguy8779I totally agree.
What I get from these videos is just how good you both are on the technical stuff as well as being super fit, humbling to watch 😮
Y'all's bike handling skills are ON POINT. So inspirational!
That jump into that trench at 24:58 😮
I was shocked at that too! Even if he had ridden that before.
Those trails look soo good, the perfect balence of tech and flow!
Great video and congratulations on the results. Well done. As for the trailer...our first experience was with an early generation Escapod in Moab in 2018. We rented from Red Rock Base Camps, who delivered and set up the trailer at our campsite, and retrieved it at the end of our stay. We had a blast, and considered buying one (we live in Park City, so it was an easy drive to check out the options available), but ultimately decided that for a bit more $$$, we could have in indoor galley, bathroom, and be able to stand up inside, so we wound up with an Airstream Basecamp 16 for 4 years, then upgraded to the 20 foot off-road version of the same model. Have never looked back.
I've been digging the elevation/progress maps that you've been showing at the bottom of the screen. It's super helpful to get a general idea of how far you are into the race and see the overall picture! Great addition!!
20:45, casually doing gap jumps on a XC that most ppl would hesitate to do on 150+ trail/enduro. Nice!
wrong time stamp?
Yes, the cool part starts at 25:25. Thanks @dojyr3130.
I actually had more fun on this trail on my XC bike than on my bigger bikes because it rolled so well that it was easier to have the speed for the jumps.
Congrats on the wins! Playing live music (24:05) for the race was a lot of fun, but I might need to race GloriDays next year! This looked like a lot of fun - yes, even the climbs.
Thanks for the music!
Massive congrats guys!!!!!! Well done. Hope the escapod becomes a regular addition to your travels. You both deserve a bit of luxury before and after your races.
Very uplifting to see you two struggling and succeeding at the thing° ^-^ (finishing the race, and even with great results)
Should definitely get a camper. Greeat for taking a few days for out of area training rides. The exterior kitchen on a teardrop is an advantage if you are going to have a lot of people around to share the cooking like at a race. Might be able to write it off as a business expense if a sponsor won't give it.
Trailer RV tips - Eat a snack 30 minutes before arriving so you don't start arguing when backing it in because your hangry. And yeah, people love to watch you screw up backing it in, so don't give them the joy by getting on your phones and using them as walkie talkies to talk to each other quietly. Works great.
😂😂
Love the sound of rain on your pod.
Great to see you fully recovered from the hard work and mechanical challenges of Breck.
Woohoo! Congrats to you both on the First place finish!!
Now you went and did it. Headed to the trainer and then a big PT session tomorrow. One month until I can get on the bike for real. Thanks for the motivation. Take care, Al
congrats on the #1's. Trail looks like a lot of fun!
Geez Syd, you’re dominating that climb and even more after creating.
I remember when you had those physio issues and look at you now. Geez! Mackey is just strong riding a log and being Mackey
Great footage you guys, that section with the rollers looked great fun. Great job!
Macky decend that what's i'm waithing for, big rocks big trail fork!
Wow that coarse had everything! Great job 👏
Love teardrops. Great little camper
What a showing!! 🎉 Nice work!!
Jeez Macky makes that look easy.
Loved the trails & trailer! Congrats on the double win.
Great job, both of you! 😊🚲👍👍👍
While laying here for my ankle to heal, I am making plans watching your vids.
That course sooo fun. Great race you two. 👊💪👍
We no longer race mtb but we still travel and ride regular an our small camper is just what our old bones need after a day on the trail
As always a great video thanks
I enjoy watching everything y'all video. Thank you and keep up the good work
Enjoy your videos. Congratulations on two 1st place finishes. I raced the 24 hour races in the late 80, early 90's. Four person teams, duo and soloed a few 12 hour races. And a lot of XC. Early days I had hard tail, ridged fork. Talk about getting beat up. Your bikes are sweet.
Another great vid guys what pretty bush you have to ride in over there laughed when Macky said its a little slippery, Mackie everything is slippery on aspens haha . Must say the trailer dude looks pretty dawn fitt .
I love these videos. Just makes me wanna go riding
Fittest trailer trash west of the Mississippi! Nice little camper!
😂😂
Nice win for both of you !
Fun watching this a few weeks after Patreon camp. Brings back fond memories for sure. Nice review of the Escaped. Really nice job the on the race wins.
And they have gears, too! 😁Yeah, I've found myself watching plenty of Glorieta videos on the excuse of trying to show friends here what it was like. (Ian)
Congrats guys!
So rad you guys!
Man, y'all are making me want to go racing! I did a few races in AZ about 6 or 7 years ago but haven't done it since moving to Florida. I need to get back into shape!
You only live once, go for it
Congratulations to the both of you.
Go team blue and team yellow Bottle caps.
Well done.
Our family travels with a Micro Mini to races, it is great having a trailer to take. You will really enjoy and get used to a trailer quickly.
Congratulations
I’m loving the graphics with the same design as your jerseys! Could you guys a brief video explaining this tech and also the overview race maps. Not using trail forks anymore
Cool video. Thanks
Nice riding you two.
Those trailers looks great. Went to website, starting at $33k. Nope. That’s full size caravan money.
My 5th wheel is a lot bigger and was $50000.00. I can’t take it where you can take the tear drop
I always think trailers like that look awesome and then the price hits. I’m not saying that’s not what it takes to make something quality, just that I can’t afford it. 😂
Agreed. We just bought a used 24 foot Class A Camper for $10,000. But brand new it was only $23,000. And it has a shower and toilet INSIDE out of sight. A couch and table and room to walk around.
IMO, what I saw from the video I'd be willing to pay maybe $12,000 - $15,000 for that little thing.
Seriously. I have a 21’ TT with a bathroom, shower, table, kitchen with space to put a bike inside and paid $2k for it.
Everyone that makes comments like this about these smaller manufactured, not Indiana big brand mass produced, trailers don't understand the point of them. Yes, they are more expensive by size comparison but the good ones like this are significantly better built than the Indiana mass produced garbage and these are meant to go places those larger stick and skin Indiana trailers can't go regularly without vibrating to pieces. If someone can't or doesn't want to afford something like this then that is fine but it doesn't mean it is overpriced compared to your larger Forest River/Jayco/Palomino/Winnebago.
Appreciate showing these types of trailers. $34K for something with no shower or toilet is crazy and I can’t believe anyone buys them.
I would recommend you look at Scamp trailers. Maybe not as "cool" LOOking, but you don't have to be outside to cook or shower. All of the luxuries of home in a small comfy package. Indoor toilet is a winning argument on cold and rainy daze...
So... Suggestion. Scamp camper trailers. Multiple sizes, standup style, the Lite 13' is light enough to two with a small car. Also, you can mix/match interiors.
Being able to talk while climbing in first place is just insane to me lol
$1000 per winner...not too shabby!
Not enough to make a living out of full-time racing however.
@@bruce.KAY-bike-drifter thats what sponsors and donations are for :)
Thanks for the video. Hearing your breathing while climbing makes me feel Pros are also human. Our heavy breathing is normal.
It's nice your bike rack can fold out of the way like that! I was curious if you were going to have to remove it to get access to the kitchen area
leave it to Macky to give Rt66 tour guide mid race breathing like hes walking a dog nice send on tabletop too!
I have the odd fantasy about having a teardrop as an escape van, basically as a mobile tent, and you can just grab it and go, like, staying at a race overnight. But, my wife hates camping and I'm not quite that daft :)
Look at the Boreas XT just up the road from you in Pueblo, CO. Having the manufacture near you is a huge advantage. Nothing against Escapod. Another advantage of the Boreas XT is you can mount your bikes on the tongue or on top of the tongue box. Much better than on the rear of the trailer. A lot of racks actually unknowingly are not supposed to be mounted on the rear of a trailer.
Congrats to both of you on amazing races!! The banking around all of the big puddles was awesome. Are either one of you running custom valving in your forks or shocks?
We run the valving Fox sends us. Don't know if it's custom for their athletes or not...
Silly me...been wondering a couple of things over these past few videos I have been enjoying, since finding your channel.
1. How the heck can I tell which camera I am seeing, when it cuts between the two? Of course once the respective Rider talks on their GoPro, EzPZ differentiation.
2. Why does every video try and sell me Syd or Macky's (Stem) 'Bottle Cap?" Okay yes, I get it now! lol
Holy shit that cllimb is no joke. When you said 2500 feet in 3miles i was like WTF? Then you said 5 and i was like WTF?
E$capod $eem$ nice. I would be in at half the price.
Looking at your thumbs-over-bar relaxation position on smooth climbing sections, I wonder if you have ever tried SQlab Innerbarends. I find them to be a very comfortable, though I'm not a competitive racer and there may be factors I'm not considering for your usage profile.
If the schedule is the same next year, I really might have to try to make it a double weekend trip.
tebrikler...
Have you considered the Leadville 100
What suspension travel are your bikes please - they look very capable! Building a XC rig for the 2025 BCBR. Loved this video!
They're the Ari Signal Peak SL, 120 front, 115 rear. And they're currently on sale if you're in the market: bit.ly/3J2Iuab (use code "sydandmacky" at checkout for free tubeless, just make sure to add the tubeless upgrade to your cart)
Have you guys considered racing in the Shenandoah 100 in Virginia
Looks like a nice camper but for the same money or less can get a lot more camper with kitchen, bathroom, shower inside and can stand up in it. And could in case of a hard rain bring a bike inside and work on it?
What is that bike carrier?
competitivecyclist.g39l.net/zNZE5r
It's lonely at the top...
@21:30 Macky I really thought you'd jump that section. Looks like such a nice jump flow section where you could gain a lot of speed if you had the skills to jump.
For 33k of one of those campers cost, i will sleep out in the rain.
If you guys know a race is going to have a lot of hike a bike, do you consider wearing shoes that are a little better suited for that than typical xc race shoe?
Yup. We generally choose the Shimano XC7 (vs our usual XC9) of there's a lot of hiking
Is the XC7/9 the best MTB-shoes at the moment? I tried the XC7 after seeing you riding with them and I am not going back.
What's your decision tree for pushng the bike vs carrying it? I've never really thought about lifting the bike as mine is a weighty 33# dry, and I'm 150#.
Generally if I know it's going to be a long hike and/or there are lots of things that the bike won't roll up easily (large roots, steps, etc) then I'll carry it because it allows me to be in more of a standard walking/hiking position.
25:20 I really don't mind if you go inside.
Do you run tire liners?N?What p s I
Yup, Vittoria Air-Liner front and rear (M) and rear only (S).
www.sydandmacky.com/mtb-tire-pressure-calculator
$45K for that trailer holy god no.
trailers like that are so cringe
ARI is the dumbest name ever. Fezzari at least sounds fast.
Perception differences. I'd heard about Fezzari for quite awhile, but thought it just sounded like a cheap setup. Ari, that's something I could go with.
@@Zyzzyx42 Ari sounds like a Chinese bike lol.
