The Timbrel of Tension also appears in Dragon Quest Monsters Joker and Joker 2, though instead of being a infinite use item, it's instead a consumable item that can either be dropped from Monsters or randomly from Blue Chests in the lategame
Dude..this is probably the BEST challenge run of any video game on all of youtube. Your commentary had me howling at times, the edits were all brilliant. Im a new subscriber man, this is some good stuff on one of my favorite games
The fact that you can craft a second Timbrel in the post-game and have 2 party members attacking at 100 tension every other turn makes the 2nd run at Rhapthorne a mugging. I always used Jessica (highest dmg in the game using Twin Dragon Lash) and Yangus for attacks, Hero/Angelo speed boosted with Meteorite Bracers/Seeded up so they always go first using Timbrel (plus KaZing when needed)...busted right in half.
You could also fill the Hero's inventory with Highly Strung Cheese on top of that to effectively have 3 Timbrel uses per turn cycle. Fucking busted mechanic lol
You have impeccable taste, Yangus is the best dragon quest husband/wife. Man even tells you his ideal future is just living life in a cabin with the hero, he's too sweet.
You're a legend bro. Playing like that with just Fists or Solo Hero is truly epic. I just came back to this game and had forgotten how hard it was at certain points. I just forgot a few things and that was enough to screw me at the beginning of the gameplay. The good thing is that I feel like I'm playing DQ8 for the first time, and that feeling is just amazing. haha Thanks for the gameplay man!!
Honestly I would make an exception for Bounce because it's not you dealing damage to the enemy rather then the enemy damaging themselves and the main point of Bounce is not to inflict damage to the enemy but rather prevent damage on the party.
Fisticuffs has always been my favorite "weapon" in this game. Every playthrough I've ever done, I always have at least one character use fisticuffs. I've also done a few fisticuffs-only runs. Wish Angelo had a little more on the offensive skills, though.
I remember i got stuck on Dhoulmagus originally playing this as a kid, knowing there was an entire other phase to the fight past the part that'd kill me (on top of the fact it wasn't the final fight of the game) is crazy, I would've never been able to beat him lol This was a great video, you deserve a lot more views
Dhoulmagus is a huuuge difficulty jump. I ran into the exact same problem when I was younger. It requires you to do a lot of alchemizing to stand a chance, which a lot of first time players just don't do. Thank you, man. I appreciate it a lot :)
I beat first form Dhoulmagus but didnt realise there would be a 2nd form and used too much mp and resourses and lost to form 2. came back expecting to have to fight both again but only needed 2nd form. never beat the game thou, probably should work on that at some point.@@ffoozie
@@DLMoridin Yeah I was really relieved when that exact same thing happened to me. His second form is already tough enough, having to do his first form again would be wayy too rough for that point of the game. I think the game is still great fun, but the ps2 version has aged pretty badly (random battles just suck, metal slime farming is a pain), so I would recommend the 3ds one if you are still interested.
the 3ds version uses badly sampled midi tracks for its music, unlike the mp3 tracks in the ps2 version. the OG version of DQ11 did the same with bad midi sampling which just consistantly gave me a headache after 2 or 3 hours of playing.@@ffoozie
I spent a lot of time looking for the ingredients for Thorn Armor, since i love the concept. Fighting 2nd form,it was thorn counterdamage that defeated him, felt vindicated.
"How many times did he fail to psych up?" 15 "If you said 10" No way "You'd be wrong. It's actually 15!" I called it, screamed it, laughed my ass off. You get a like and a sub.
I really love the battle system for DQ8, and its always fun to beat Dhoulmagus before Angelo learns multi-heal, though its definitely up to RNG at that point. Learning which armor and spells can reduce the AOE spam spells and breaths of late game enemies helps a ton for lowering the HP needed to make the boss fights reliable. The late game alchemy gear like timbrel and sages stone is completely busted, especially post game when you can get a second timbrel (without grinding). As much as I love the power spikes you can get from it, unrestricted alchemy is just a little too OP for most challenge runs, but its super fun to optimize in the mid game when you have so really nice short term gains versus focusing on the bigger power spikes for some of the troublesome bosses. and if it directly flows into your endgame equipment setup. Its also nice that even though some equipment/skill trees obviously win out late game, they are surprisingly well balanced with decent power jumps at various points. For a normal playthrough its hard to ignore axes and spears since they let you get a few cheap metal slimes and are pretty good, but I remember learning thin air on Yangus my first playthrough and loved spamming it. A bit more streamlined to just alchemy a good boomerang for the mobs, and focus on the single target DPS of the other skill trees, but hard to call any setup useless (maybe fisticuffs with no skill points). I know a no skill points run in general makes a decent challenge run, its surprising just how much you lose out on (acceleratle locked behind 3 skill points feels so mean), but with alchemy you can get thru just fine. A little boring without alchemy, but maybe if you add in a no shopping rule as well it would be really fun to see what you can achieve. Was a little surprised you didn't seem to know about the heal right before the Trap Box boss. I always use that as a spot to grind a little more money off the goodie bags in the area since so much good stuff to buy in pickham, plus a couple levels before that boss never hurt (I also like to beat the trap box before getting angelo, which leads to some fun sequence break dialogs, but it can be rough getting there on the ps2 version. The 3ds version makes it a little too easy.)
Thank you for the extensive comment! Very interesting read! I'm sure RNG plays a large part in the Dhoulmagus fight before you get multi-heal, but I'm certain you can still get trough it better than I did by alchemizing some greater panaceas and giving them to your entire party. That combined with the bow should be enough to get you trough on your first shot, I was just to busy alchemizing other stuff to get them done. But I admit I did not pay as much attention to the armor as much as I should've. Yeah second timbrel goes CRAZY, I remember never even being able to beat the second dracovian trial, then learning about the timbrel, and destroying every trial from there on out. Sage's stone also super busted. I like feeling powerful in the end-game, but it's a shame all challenge is suddenly gone. Dragon Quest XI had this problem as well. In my first playthrough I did not know that acceleratle was locked behind staves. It's suprising how much harder that playthrough was just because bosses get to act first sometimes. A no skill point, no shopping run does seem kinda interesting... hmm... I'll keep that in mind, thanks for the suggestion! I just did 2 DQVIII runs in the past month so it'll be a while before I return, but I definitely wanna do that sometime. I was also thinking about doing a Yangus only run (but thinking about it sounds like it's gonna be complete torture, dunno how possible it'll be near the mid-game since he has no fullheal and can only bring a limited amount of panaceas. I'll have to super overlevel to even stand a chance against Empyrea). I genuinely did not know lol. I only found out about the heal before Dhoulmagus recently as well. Wait you can get to Trap Box before getting angelo?? How far can you go without angelo before the game stops you?
One other really crazy good gear you might not first consider is the life bracer. +50 hp is crazy good for boss fights, especially for Angelo and Jessica. It didn't look like you had any. Yangus only does sound pretty hard. Really any solo challenge in DQ8 sounds pretty difficult, since its kinda balanced around a full time healer. The 3ds version might be different since you can grind daily stat seeds from the bonuses, and leveling is much easier, but even then its rough. Also have to bend the rules for Rapthorne, which will require leveling up some people. You can't do the moon shadow stuff in Ascantha, but nothing stops you from walking to pickham. You can get the Venus tear, but can't visit Red or give it to her. You can't go to Trodain until you talk to Brains, which is locked behind Red, which is locked behind the first Brains visit, and thus Ascantha. Still quite fun to walk to pickham, buy the really good equipment, then steamroll the game until Trodain. With only 3 party members you are well within 1 round range of some of the nasty enemies though. Again, 3ds makes this many times easier, too bad its so hard to stream/record that version, I would really love a real console release of the updated version. I highly recommend getting the Venus tear before visiting Red at least once though... the cutscenes are quite funny.@@ffoozie
No can't say I used the bracer. But honestly, probably wasn't necessary until Dhoulmagus. But I admit I tend to undervalue HP bonuses, unless it's a lot. Don't know if you've seen it, but I recently uploaded a video using only Hero. So it certainly is possible to get around the full time healer thing, but I admit that it makes combat very sluggish and monotone. Everything after Empyrea becomes so frustrating and boring. Since I haven't played the 3ds version yet, I thought of doing a Yangus only run on there, and those daily stat seeds do sound they would come in useful for that. But might just do that no armor/stat point run you suggested instead. Dude I would love a switch version of DQVIII with the orchestral music and updated graphics, but let's let them focus on DQXII for now. Hope it's good. 🙏 Thanks for the heads up, I definitely will try and do that sometime! @simbu5882
I bought this game back in 2006 for PS2. I have the android version on my phone now and have been enjoying playing through it again. Just wish they didn't get rid of the voice acting for the mobile version. That was a big part of its charm but it's not enough to ruin the fun. I'm still really enjoying playing it again.
Thank you! I still recommend doing a fisticuffs run, it's a fun challenge. Especially if you're not really that familiar with the game's alchemy system.
I remember trying a fisticuffs/permadeath run a few years back in this game. I knew in advance that in some instances of the Story all Characters had to be alive to progress. What I hadn't known at that time is, if a party member is dead and shows up in a mandatory Cutscene, the game resurrects them with 1 hp automatically. Changed the rules to just banning Churches instead.😅
Man I love this game so much. I bought a secondhand PS2 a few years back just to play this game. I pretty much know it inside and out and when you go to the screen that shows your play stats King Trodain actually told me "Hey, you're moving a little fast there bud. You sure you're not cheating?" and I thought that was funny as hell.
I attempted this a long while back but ultimately dropped it around the point of reaching Argonia (I may attempt it again one day), I believe it's definitely possible but it's a VERY slow process in the early-game to accumulate enough skill points to hit your stride in terms of acquiring innate attack boosts and useful crowd control fisticuff skills and even with that it will still be fairly difficult to take down the more challenging and HP-heavy mid- and late-game bosses.
Hmmm, have to disagree a little. Yangus' skill points are very frontloaded, which means he gets his CC skill pretty fast, during this run it was not too long after Khalamari. He doesn't have a lot of MP so you do have to rest more than usual. Acquiring the skill points isn't a slower process than usual if you go get chests that are valuable (alchemizing ingredients, seeds, etc) and don't flee from fights. I didn't have to do any grinding this run. Late game bosses aren't that troublesome if you keep up with alchemizing armor. If your survivability is higher, it doesn't really matter that bosses have high HP. However, you're right that fisticuffs damage is lackluster. This is most visible during the dhoulmagus fight, because he is a little damage race-y.
I still remember the time i had a random encounter on the hill you can only reach flying, where the Conqueror Axe is, and faced 9 metal king slimes, managed to take 2 out while the others escaped. It gace me shivers to think that i encountered 90k exp
see the unfortunate thing here is, its impossible to encounter 9 metal king slimes. that encounter just doesnt exist in the game. you can face 2 metal king slimes together, or 6 liquid metals with 1 metal king in the center, but 9 metal kings is not possible. it literally doesnt exist in the code as a possible battle. no matter how much you search and hunt, youll never find a screenshot of this kind of encounter, or a youtube video of it, because it doesnt exist. your memory is incorrect.
Freaking Wave of Ice was the bane of my existence when I first played DQ8. It seemed as the though every boss that can use it, spammed it against me with impunity. It got so bad that I gave up buffing my party from the Dhoulmagus fight onwards except for the few bosses that didn’t have WOI or when I used Timbrel of Tension…….that beast is totally busted and easily spammed.
I still hold my Hero only run as one of the most fun times I ever had playing an RPG. Of course you need to use the full party for the last boss but the journey leading up to that point was perfect.
Ya think so? For me I really disliked my solo Hero run after Empyrea. Everything became fullheal, fullheal, fullheal (wait for moment to strike, which is once every 10 turns), do 100 damage, fullheal fullheal, fullheal, etc. Maybe if you were a higher level than I was it probably a more fun experience, but endgame felt like a chore to me.
@@ffoozie Pretty sure I did my fair share of slime farming. I was more than likely close to lvl 99 at that point. I seem to remember using Miracle Slash with the Uber Miracle Sword a lot in the late game even though most of my run was spear and fisticuff dependent.
as someone who's played over 1k hrs of this on the ps2 since its my favorite game of all time i already know the answer is yes since ive done it already
When i did no weapons i allowed magic and abilities, only time i allowed weapons was solely for grinding, i went through the post game and finished the dragovian trails
One thing I noticed, when you fought Geezer, was hero being at level 50 psyche, you can actually get to super high tension very early in the game, by hitting 50 about 6 or 7 times throughout all your battle, doing it with both Hero and Yangus, will speed up the process and will be unlocked for everyone to use, a little tip that might of affected the run a little bit
I am unsure as to what you mean? If you mean psyching up from 50 to 100, it has a 33% chance of going trough. It's like this for the entire game, and is not something that's 'unlocked', as far as I'm aware. Geezer really doesn't need it either, since 2 or 3 50 tensions are enough to knock him out. Plus he has a guarantee curse on Yangus, making him unable to reach 100 anyway.
@@ffoozie Sorry if I made that sound confusing, what I mean is, you can make the characters reach 100 before fighting Geyzer, I managed to it by level 3, just wanted to share this fact
@@ffoozie the first few times you get to 50 tension, you actually cant go higher, it gives you a different message than usual if you try to go for 100, and clearly indicates youre capped out. i think the trigger to unlock 100 tension is hitting 50 tension a few times, or reaching a certain level, or a certain point in the story. pick one of the three. i think most players who reach 100 tension dont even attempt it until they see an enemy get there first, at which point, they realize they couldve been doing this for a long while because every possible unlock has been triggered.
@@steveh1474 I looked it up on the wiki, and you're right. 100 tension gets unlocked after you psyched up to 50 10 times. I was not aware you had to unlock super high tension. Because going for 100 tension isn't really that viable for the geezer and khalamari I never tried it that early and by the time I need it I've already done it 10 times.
So you can increase the effects of buffs and debuffs with tension too... Having hero and jessica both psych for 3 turns then having her omph and him use a nice strong attack will end lots of bosses.
idk if you know this but knuckle sandwich doesnt remove tension but does get boosted by it. also it does let you have a single target attack without losing tension so you dont waste turns tensing up.
I am aware that knuckle sandwich doesn't remove tension yeah, although I'm pretty sure it doesn't get boosted by it. It does get boost by oomph, if that's what you mean.
If you have tension because your building for an attack but need to change plans to heal your tension boosts your healing spells so you can save mp by using cheaper spells.
Good video, I like your humor and the effort you put into this. But I would warmly recommend talking either slower or more clearly, while also slightly increasing your mic volume in the mix.
Yo, thanks for the feedback! I did lower music volume and used a compressor/equalizer on my newest video, so hearing what I say shouldn't pose as much of a problem anymore. As for the talking, yeah sorry. When I have to present something I just get a little nervous and start talking fast, hopefully this will lessen as I get more comfortable making videos.
I'm 10ish minutes in, and I see Jessica specing into fisticuffs, when you're not going to be attacking with her later because SEX APPEAL IS FUCKING OVERPOWERED IN SUPPORT.
I attempted this run a while back, though I did it slightly differently. I allowed myself to attack with magic, but my restriction was to only spend skill points on Fisticuffs. Nothing else
At start, going to do predictions first as many ask for :) -- I predict this is do-able, especially later on (think one of the characters is an unarmed specialist, but I might be thinking of 11 -- sad trombone), so think you'll be able to do it, question, of course, is at what level you'll be able to do it (I predict early game will require EXCESSIVE overleveling and hair pulling but that end game and bonus content -- should you attempt it -- will be done at normal or close to normal levels)
should've waited till rules (🥶), yeah, lack of magic will GREATLY increase the final level required so revising prediction to be: the regular game is completable at fairly high level, but bonus content is not.
@@roymerkel8008 Thank you for the prediction! Interesting read. Yeah sadly I underestimated the power of thin air, and made regular encounters a cakewalk. Currently doing a solo hero run and thin air is doing lots of work for me there as well.

Which zing/kazing makes pointless.
You damn king what a lad what a Chad and man of culture for doing this challenge on this 10/10 best dragon quest game
Just found your vids, they're pretty good. Keep it up brother
Thank u for ur sacrifice in making this video
I remember trying this back in the day it was such a grind lol
Nice vid, I enjoyed your banter! ^_^
ah, one of my favorite PS2 games. I remember this game had a demo disc for XII in it. I guess the RUclips algorithm is useful sometimes.
So no one wanted to comment on how he beat the whole game AND an extra post game boss UNDER LEVEL 40?! …FIST ONLY
damn you are the real OG!
commentary was hilarious
@@steveh1474 then would be the 6 bubbles and kings, was around 14 years at the time.
Still it was the biggest amount of xp I saw.
bro wtf I did that challenge on my own 1 year ago and I see this video just now
I'm subscribing
Freaking Wave of Ice was the bane of my existence when I first played DQ8. It seemed as the though every boss that can use it, spammed it against me with impunity. It got so bad that I gave up buffing my party from the Dhoulmagus fight onwards except for the few bosses that didn’t have WOI or when I used Timbrel of Tension…….that beast is totally busted and easily spammed.
I have been LOOKING for this!
Good video, solid execution
Thank you, lad. Much appreciated.
9:35 Tortured Soul was the biggest wall i faced ,even after Khalamari, after him ,the rest of bosses went down in 2 or 3 tries.
who needs magic or weapons when you got knuckle sandwiches
This game was a glorious treat in the West for fans of the Dragon Quest Series.
Good taste in music, subscribed
One of my favorite games ever ❤
as someone who's played over 1k hrs of this on the ps2 since its my favorite game of all time i already know the answer is yes since ive done it already
As the great pathagorians gf once said “yasss slay gurl”
Dies cry laughing
When i did no weapons i allowed magic and abilities, only time i allowed weapons was solely for grinding, i went through the post game and finished the dragovian trails
Simple answer....yes.
I have done it when it came out.
An amazing game overall.
Tension boosts the numbers across the board if what you do has numbers it gets boosted. Even buff spells buff more with tension.
Earned yourself a new sub with this content , also, you're dutch by any chance?
Mad funny good video bro
Good video, I like your humor and the effort you put into this. But I would warmly recommend talking either slower or more clearly, while also slightly increasing your mic volume in the mix.
Yo, thanks for the feedback! I did lower music volume and used a compressor/equalizer on my newest video, so hearing what I say shouldn't pose as much of a problem anymore. As for the talking, yeah sorry. When I have to present something I just get a little nervous and start talking fast, hopefully this will lessen as I get more comfortable making videos.
Psych up affects all of your battle actions, even buffing and debuffing 👌
It's a bow. It's another fuckin bow, dude. 21:25
There is a piller you can read in swordsmin labyrinth just before thé Boss and it fully heals your hp and mp
There's a full heal spot next to trap box for future runs
I'm 10ish minutes in, and I see Jessica specing into fisticuffs, when you're not going to be attacking with her later because SEX APPEAL IS FUCKING OVERPOWERED IN SUPPORT.
Nice run!
Banger vid'
I wish they would release this game on ps4/5 I would play it so much, I miss playing it
I attempted this run a while back, though I did it slightly differently. I allowed myself to attack with magic, but my restriction was to only spend skill points on Fisticuffs. Nothing else
19:03 Now you wrong for that 😂
You said "Dragon Quest but with the Fade Alone" lmaooooo
Fightman, Punch God of Evil
At start, going to do predictions first as many ask for :) -- I predict this is do-able, especially later on (think one of the characters is an unarmed specialist, but I might be thinking of 11 -- sad trombone), so think you'll be able to do it, question, of course, is at what level you'll be able to do it (I predict early game will require EXCESSIVE overleveling and hair pulling but that end game and bonus content -- should you attempt it -- will be done at normal or close to normal levels)
should've waited till rules (🥶), yeah, lack of magic will GREATLY increase the final level required so revising prediction to be: the regular game is completable at fairly high level, but bonus content is not.
after Jessica, ok, wan't crazy -- BOTH Yangus and Jessica learn. So maybe the "normal" levels for final boss theory is back on the table.
@@roymerkel8008 Thank you for the prediction! Interesting read. Yeah sadly I underestimated the power of thin air, and made regular encounters a cakewalk.
Currently doing a solo hero run and thin air is doing lots of work for me there as well.
nice win! And nice to know that I was right that your team becomes pretty overpowered (relatively speaking, of course) at the end!
Weird how I completed rpgs all the time when I was a kid, but now I can barely past the first act. Life was so simple. Wake up, game, eat poptarts, game, go to sleep.
19:02 I definetely did not see that coming
I gotta try this run!!!
I did this when i named the hero Gohan like 15 years ago
It's a shame a Cheese only run wouldn't be possible.
fun fact: you can't name yourself after any important in-game characters. i found this out cause my name is Angelo...
Weapons as items 👀
I love stuff like this 💀
Lmao subbed let's go bro
There was a healing wall right next to the treasure boss 😅
Damn u were underleveled fighting dhoulmagus 😅
LMS grinding will be hell
Good video. Sometimes your voice was quieter than the ingame sound and it was hard to understand what you were saying (especially noticable when you talked about your skill allocation at 11:30).
But the video was entertaining nonetheless
Thanks a lot for the feedback! I like to have music a little loud, but it does kinda make it more of struggle to hear me. I'll keep it in mind.
Yes u can actually I've done it many times. I had an all fist party and it was easier to beat the game than with weapons
Subbed
thanks for calling me beautiful
good video bro, just the music is a little loud sometimes!
Thank you for the feedback! I'll focus more on the audio next time.
DRAGON QUEEEEST LETS GOOOOO!!!!
Can You Beat Dragon Quest VIII Without MP?
Anyone ever did a Dhoulmagus 2 parter back to back
I knew fist are the worst weapon type but I didnt realize how bad they were. I assumed they were like.... 20% worse but the upside is you have a bit more money since you don't need to buy weapons so you will have slightly better armor usually but... man... these really are horrible
I wonder if Morrie and Red would make this easier.
Does a bear shit in the woods?
i did my first play threw with fist skill so i low key did this challange
So, having lv 99 is kinda overkill huh. No wonder leveling is kinda hard without metal slime
Oh man, no offensives spells, that's just masochism.
Magic Burst was banned as a damaging spell even though it's from the Fisticuffs tree ?
So sad DQ11 isn't like DQ8... little details, medium details and... well... overall all details
