  • Welcome to the latest installment of Chad's Sports Talk.
I know that this is coming a little late since the news of UMass will return to the MAC in 2025 for all sports. They were once a football-only member between 2012-15. This will give the conference 13 members. That got me thinking, who else could MAC target for expansion to even the conference at 14, or even 16 members or more. Could it be UConn as a football-only member, and if so which non-football program would join? Does North Dakota State & South Dakota State make the move up to FBS? Do you agree with my choices? Who else should be considered?

MAC getting to 16 members Austin Peay Murray State Southern Illinois or Illinois State (either or) and Northern Iowa but they'll probably have to upgrade the 🏈 dome

I actually think Austin peay works in the MAC it would get the conference in Nashville basically members are leaving the United Athletics conference anyways for FBS Jax State Sam Houston State and Kennesaw State for C-USA previously so why couldn't the Governors jump ship as well bringing Southern favor to the Midwest

I think northern MAC schools athletes from Kent State Ohio etc would love to get out of the cold weather going down south to Austin peay and Murray State in one single trip

They would be an FCS football school and I see no way they upgrade to FBS football - but another school that is clearly in the MAC footprint and would give you another in-state rivalry pair would to invite Indiana State to pair with Ball State. The Sycamores have a really good baseball team, good track and were just in the National Final of the NIT tournament in Men's Basketball Tournament.

I think Indiana State could also work, but if the MAC were going to raid Missouri Valley, it could be Illinois State. This gives Northern Illinois an in-state rival. Ball State has Miami relatively close to them. Southern Illinois could work just as well. Who can tell with the current conference realignment circus?

@@chadssportstalk7171 The other piece, I would add is that some of the same ones you mentioned as potential MAC additions could just as easily and with some maybe easier adds to the Missouri Valley to replace Missouri State. A couple of those were from the Horizon - Northern Kentucky, Oakland, Youngstown State or Wright State.
The Missouri Valley just feels so different from when I went to Indiana State - 3 schools that were apart of the conference when I was there are now in other conferences. (Creighton, Wichita State and now Missouri State). That doesn't even include Illinois Chicago who was in for a few years after my time in Terre Haute.

You're picking great schools; however, the MAC doesn't bring in schools that aren't all-in with their programs. With that being said, UConn basketball would be bent-over backwards to go backwards to the MAC. They're never leaving the Big East. lol
Go after Albany, 'Nova, & EKU...😊
    NKU & Binghamton doesn't have football programs, so that's a no-go.
YSU can't afford to move up to d-1. Them to the MAC has been a topic of conversation for many years. If they really wanted to join the Ohio-heavy MAC, they would've done it by now.
Here's ine school you haven't mentioned: Wayne State. Whatcha' think?

I am from Iowa, And you didn't say anything about us. ( I don't think) i graduated from Northern Iowa, so did KURT Warner. I don't think Iowa Has enough people for a third fbs team, but uni gets a lot of players out of Wisconsin and Minnesota, who don't have a second FBS team. Could we at least be a bridge for the dakotas to the mac.

What about Austin peay near the Nashville , TN area and Murray State 🐎 which is good in 🏀 gets the MAC into the South to accomplish what they wanted to with. WKU/ MTSU

That could work too and with the crazy world of conference realignment anything is possible

@@chadssportstalk7171 Now I think Delaware might have jumped the gun going to C-USA just imagine if UMass and Army for 🏈 only joined the MAC as independent schools then you could have added Delaware and Villanova for 🏈 only as a package deal to finish out the MAC to 16 members then you would replace Army/ Villanova for Olympic sports with whomever

If i am Austin peay i probably would knock on the Mac door 🚪 myself to get out from under the Asun 🏈 situation we might have to play home games at the NFL stadium 🏟️ in nearby Nashville sharing it with Tennessee State 🐯 and Tennessee Titans 🗡️ for the time being until we upgrade our on campus stadium 🏟️

Who do you think the MAC will add they need another school by 2025 to come in with UMass I don't think it would be ND State 🦬 or SD State 🐇 they would be a package deal UConn think they are a bigger brand so I think they will stay independent in 🏈 like Notre Dame 🍀 BiG East for Olympic sports I think WKU was the closest to joining the Mac but C-USA has expanded to 12 schools now and they would give up 100 miles of hate with MTSU, No to Youngstown State that would be overkill with Ohio schools

I really think UConn would be the first target. They are not that big in football and need a conference to stabilize their program much like when Temple did it. Then whom do you add for non-football and I lean more Binghamton but Hofstra, Northeastern, or someone else in that region would do. Additionally, I like the idea of ND State and SD State joining the MAC. It would give the conference more bang for their buck. I am also partial to Illinois State and Southern Illinois joining as well, and some love for Indiana State.
