For the last few years of his life, Matt Busby lived about three doors from my mother, she being in a small flat. Six months before his death, when I was visiting her from overseas, I stopped my car to let a little old silver haired gentleman shuffle across the junction of her exit. He gave me a cheery wave. I was stunned that it was Sir Matt. Having respect for the privacy of fellows like him, I just waved back. When I heard he had died, I wished I had got out of the car to shake his hand.
These men managed their teams during era when there was no television pundits throwing their tuppence in after every game, no ex players telling them what to do Football was football then and available to everyone not £50 a game to get in
McIlvanney was such a great writer. I watched this when first aired on TV and two times more here on RUclips and it is brilliant. Remarkable men during remarkable times - true working class heroes - absolutely incredible stories that dramatised films of, would never do justice, but this documentary does do the story justice. Documentaries today are nowhere nearly as well done.
I wonder what these men would be like with the bill big boots players of today with the money they get paid & pampered the way they do 3 of the most extraordinary men that ever graced the land of football when you think of these 3 clubs instantly you think big Jock/ Sir Matt and Shanks ,RIP each & every 1 of you
@@writerjames8284 Why would he need to of had success in England to of been a great manager? Alex Ferguson doesn't think that and I think he's more qualified than you!
Having the best managers doesn't guarantee trophies. If you put Sir Alex Ferguson in charge of Yeovil Town for instance he's not going to win European Cups, he's going to take them 1 or 2 leagues above what they're used to but the overwhelming power of the bigger, wealthier clubs will always prevail. Scotland has a population of just 5m, they're not winning World Cups even with the best managers
Bill Shankly built the modern day Liverpool. Our Liverpool Managers won FIVE European Cups. man u. has only won 3. and we Liverpool don't need sir this and sir that. Bill Shankly lived in a Terraced house. We'll Be BACK.
@@andisadler2897 Don't be silly. Premiership is just a name, we have 18 titles and do not forget it. Busby and Shanks were friends, neither would have said what you guys have said. Both teams will remain at the top. Liverpool will be at the top soon, it is the order of things, then united....
@@martygough lol i dont know were your getting your stupid comments. the premiership is the finest league compettition in the world. youve never won it. Huddersfield town won the old division 1 3 seasons running and yet noone talks about them do they. youve won nothing, until then grow up.
Winning the top division with Derby & Notts Forest, not to mention back to back European Cups. Preposterous claim that Clough was a charlatan. GET A GRIP!
As much as I admire this great Scottish men. Bill Struth. The Great Rangers manager had far better records than Shankly and Stein! Yet his achievements are always over looked. Walter smith has won more as a coach than stein also! Worth mentioning

Men with principles...where have they all gone
A truly great piece of sports and social historical journalism ... Not many subjects could compare!
An absolute pleasure to watch
Never see the likes again
Thank you for posting this, I'd not seen it before. It's a monument in sports journalism.
The best football documentary ever. And the king of football writers.
Stein, Busby, Shankly, Ferguson you got to credit these Scottish managers they built the English game❤

Real Men.
Jock stein the GREATEST of the lot , no disrespect to the other 2 , 2 giants in the game but stein was the 1 true GENIUS HH 💚🍀🍀
Young man , you've forgotten about ole big head !
If Stien was that good he would have had success in England. Sir Matt was the absolute best

Jock stein failed in the English league Fergie succeeded . Fergie the best
@@writerjames8284 Sorry forgot that unless you succeed in English football you're classed as a failure! Sorry about that.
Glenbuck. Great name for a horse.
Gavin MacNeish a heritage village now. It’s bare, but beautiful. The pitch of the famous cherry pickers still exists to this day. An incredible place.
6 minutes in, everybody got in the car and drove down to the Works Quarter to collect from restaurants that were owing.
Scotland had such magical men as these
Yet the National side has never climbed such heights
Scotland never wanted to win trophies
They only played to beat England once a year

I like Matt's brother Jimmy. Is he still living?
Not likely, these videos are over 20 years old.
Is this being narrated by Sean Connery?
No, Hugh McIlvanney

No, Stein, Shankly & Busby changed the game! The three of them changed the landscape of European football. Struth and smith only won domestically
Struth(whoever he was?) , should not be mentioned in the same breath as these managerial titans. Walter Smith, you're having a joke ,are you ? !
@@brianoreilly239 Bill Struth! The most successful Scottish manager in history. FACT
He was not in the same league as Stein , Shankly or Busby. That’s why nobody is interested in writing about him nor making a TV doc on him.
Yeah but Stein is tarnished with his support of peodophiles
