  • Robots move a step closer towards the human world as Roboticist Angelica Lim demonstrates the empathetic and emotional potential of our electronic partners.
    Angelica Lim
    Roboticist
For many of us, the word "robot" probably inspires our imaginations and brings back memories of science fiction stories or television shows, or perhaps cartoon characters from our childhoods. Up until now robots have been thought of as either fictional creations or disembodied factory mechanisms slated to performing rote tasks. Angelica Lim, however, sees robots, and their potential quite differently. When Angelica Lim thinks of the word "robot", she envisions a future filled with a panoply of useful, accessible and empathetic robots helping us along in our oh-so-human lives. Angelica, a computer scientist currently pursing her Ph.D. in Intelligence Science at Kyoto University, has added her passion and determination to numerous projects in robotics, ranging from an underwater autonomous vehicle to audio-visual emotion processing for humanoids to gesture recognition for human-robot interaction. Her most recent project has been her work on a music-playing robot which has been featured at international conferences, in magazines and on TV, and for which she won an IROS NTF Award in Entertainment Robots and Systems in 2010. So does our future include responsive, empathetic and humanoid robots? With inspired and passionate scientists such as Angelica Lim leading the way, there is only one answer: yes.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Really interesting talk - I am convinced that the acceptance of robots in society is far greater in Japan than anywhere else in the world right now, probably due to greater exposure. I would also add that as well as moving his head a believe it is essential that a robot has a common base with us. Something simple like random blinking rather than solid lite eyes.........

Thanks for the comment! Yes indeed, Hollywood had played a huge factor, I think. What do you mean by the impact of 3D printing? Useful robots that have different forms or will become more ubiquitous?

Do you think you'll be writing a book or something like that on this topic? It would be a very interesting read!

Angelica although the future that you propose with robotics is exciting it also doesn't breed a fairly large amount of fear because if robots do become self aware and emotional it also means that they have the ability at that point to make the wrong decision just like humans yeah the only difference is a robot being that far more durable body and in most cases far stronger than a human body and also at some point deciding that it's mental capacity is more superior would attempt to take leadership in the natural evolution of thought provoking science

Speaking of trust, she barely even got it to start, and she was like "c'moon!" - irony.

When they sell more personal robots then more people will buy them.
I am building my own robots because no one sells the robots I want.
Nao would be a very good robot, but they don't sell them to everyone and the price is very high.

As long as the robots making pre-programming movements or answers to standards commands , the domestic robot will be only a toy. An expensive toy that not all people can buy.

i want to see robots faking a personality, that can be configured via say 10-15 parameters.
and they should at least be able to pick up stuff i tell them to fetch for me.
they should not sound like a bundle of servo-motors too.

why would you say that it can translate or it will help you translate? ,This can be very misleading .I understand that you were trying to put a good show but people might have thought that it was translating in real-time and that's just wrong as you programmed it to speak that specific phrases before .
